The following is a lecture given by His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami on September 30, 1980 in Los Angeles, California. The morning class begins with a reading from the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam Fourth Canto, Chapter Twenty-One, Text Twenty-Four.
ya uddharet karaṁ rājā
prajā dharmeṣv aśikṣayan
prajānāṁ śamalaṁ bhuṅkte
bhagaṁ ca svaṁ jahāti saḥ
Translation: Any king who does not teach his citizens about their respective duties in terms of varṇa and āśrama but who simply exacts tolls and taxes from them is liable to suffer for the impious activities which have been performed by the citizens. In addition to such degradation, the king also loses his own fortune.
Purport: A king, governor or president should not take the opportunity to occupy his post without also discharging his duty. He must teach the people within the state how to observe the divisions of varṇa and āśrama. If a king neglects to give such instructions and is simply satisfied with levying taxes, then those who share in the collection — namely, all the government servants and the head of the state — are liable to share in the impious activities of the general masses. The laws of nature are very subtle. For example, if one eats in a place which is very sinful, he shares in the resultant reaction of the sinful activities performed there. (It is a Vedic system, therefore, for a householder to call brāhmaṇas and Vaiṣṇavas to eat at ceremonial performances in his house because the brāhmaṇas and Vaiṣṇavas can immunize him from sinful activities. But it is not the duty of rigid brāhmaṇas and Vaiṣṇavas to accept invitations everywhere. There is, of course, no objection to taking part in feasts in which prasāda is distributed.) There are many subtle laws which are practically unknown to people in general, but the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is very scientifically distributing all this Vedic knowledge for the benefit of the people of the world.
* * *
Jayapatākā Swami: The science of accepting responsibility and reactions for different activities has been very nicely revealed by Śrīla Prabhupāda here in his Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. Śrīla Prabhupāda also was revealing these things in his preaching in India, when he would accept invitations outside with certain people who he did not think to be very pious, he would only but not very pious, but who are life members. He would only accept pakkā-anna, pakkā food, that means food fried in ghee. But he said that if something is fried in ghee, then it has less reaction than rice, dāl and other things.
And it was only a very rare occasion when he would accept a full prasāda. We heard that in his earlier preaching times he was very strict about where he would accept meals. So, actually Śrīla Prabhupāda is instructing us about the Vedic culture in so many ways. If one is very careful, then he can avoid all the difficulties. Of course, today the people are so sinful that one can very easily see how the governmental leaders, how the governmental administrators are going to suffer because of a lack of any hint at spiritually uplifting the citizens.
Just as an observable fact, if you took a before and after shot of the President of the United States before election and four years after, even two years after, it was astonishing that they age so many years, immediately look completely like they run through the washing machine because of course they are accepting so many reactions. They don’t know these laws. Śrīla Prabhupāda instructed that if one, even if one for instance, eats the food from someone who is not a proper Vaiṣṇava, that pollutes the mind, that pollutes one’s mind so that he becomes materialistic. To give an example, one-time Śrīla Prabhupāda was asked that how great exalted personalities like Bhīṣma and Droṇācārya stood silent while Draupadī was being embarrassed, was being offended in the assembly of great kings and emperors of the Kurus. She was being attempted to be stripped naked in their presence.
And they weren’t even protesting how this obscene and hideous act can be done in this exalted royal courtroom. Why did they not object? A mahājana and a great brāhmaṇa, Bhīṣma and Droṇācārya, why were they silent? Śrīla Prabhupāda replied, the reason they were silent is their brains had become polluted even though they were such exalted great souls. By eating the food from Droṇācārya, who was not a… who was of a low character, excuse me, Duryodhana and the sons of Dhṛtarāṣṭra, that by eating this contaminated foodstuff their minds had become polluted. On the other hand, Nārada Muni describes in the Bhāgavatam that just by taking the remnants of prasāda from the bhaktivedāntas that he had become completely transcendentally situated.
And Prabhupāda describes it works even like a subtle poison in a good sense that by taking the remnants of pure devotees one gets not only relieved from all reactions of his karma, but he gets imbibed with Kṛṣṇa consciousness, with pure devotional service. So, this is a great science about accepting invitations and what one eats. You are what you eat. Prabhupāda once quoted that part, that book that if you eat prasāda, then you become transcendental and you eat the other things and you become polluted. So, one should be very careful about the association one keeps and what one eats. Even not only the person who does something responsible, but the person who directs that person and the person who approves of that activity is also responsible. According to Pṛthu Mahārāja, he was encouraging the great demigods and everyone to bless these citizens because even by your approving of their actions, by your directing their spiritual advancement, you get the reaction, the favorable reaction.
So, in a similar way, if someone approves of some illegal activity because it brings money or other, some other kind of benefit, material benefit, and one approves of that illegal activity, even approves what to speak of, direct how to do it, then even though he is not performing that act, he is responsible for the reaction, equally responsive. Similarly, we can understand that actually one time one devotee wrote to Śrīla Prabhupāda that, “Śrīla Prabhupāda, I understand that the temple president, just like the king, has to accept one-sixth of the reactions of the subjects. So, the temple president, he also is one-sixth liable for the activities of the members in his temple?” And Prabhupāda said, “Why one-sixth? Hundred percent responsible! Hundred percent of the reaction.”
If the devotees in the temple are misbehaving, the temple president is hundred percent equal of their reaction. And if they are performing pious activities, much saṅkīrtana, much preaching, he is also getting hundred percent benefit, a great opportunity to make advancement or to go under. “I request all the pure hearted demigods, forefathers and saintly persons to support my proposal. For after death, the result of an action is equally shared by its doer, its director and its supporter”, Pṛthu Mahārāja’s advice. So, this movement is actually meant for benedicting the whole world. Actually, our previous ācāryas, they had worked to carry out Lord Caitanya’s order and written so many transcendental literatures.
Actually, the pastime how the literatures reached Bengal and how the King of Bengal acted gives us an insight into this idea of the responsibility of a ruler. Maybe I already told this last time I was here up to the books, going to Bengal, up to Vṛndāvana. Because what happened was that when Śrīnivāsa Ācārya was in Vṛndāvana with Narottama dāsa Ṭhākura and Śyāmānanda Paṇḍita, then one day they were taking darśana of Govindajī. And Govindajī said to Śrīnivāsa, “You must distribute books. You take the books to Bengal.” They were silent, everyone was astonished. Govindajī had suddenly spoken that, “Śrīnivāsa, take all the books and distribute them.” So, then some of the devotees came and they had also the previous night had dreams where the same order had been given by Lord Caitanya and Rūpa and Sanātana, different people. So, then they prepared. And once some big businessmen from Mathurā provided bullock carts and armed guards and they prepared all the books.
And then Śrīnivāsa, Narottama and Śyāmānanda went and visited all the Vaiṣṇavas because their hearts were breaking that they had to leave Vṛndāvana. They didn’t want to leave Vṛndāvana. In fact, they were completely petrified that if we leave Vṛndāvana we may not see these exalted Vaiṣṇavas. They went and saw Raghunātha dāsa Gosvāmī, Kṛṣṇadāsa Kavirāja Gosvāmī, Lokanātha Gosvāmī, Bhūgarbha Gosvāmī, Gopāla Bhaṭṭa Gosvāmī, Haridāsa Brahmacārī, and of course Jīva Gosvāmī and the other great souls like Śrī Rāghava Paṇḍita, who were all in Vṛndāvana. And so, when the time came, the auspicious time when they had to go, all the Vaiṣṇavas came. They came from Rādhā-kuṇḍa, they came from Govardhana. They all came because this was the first book distribution. And they all accompanied.
And when the... when the bullock carts were leaving, they walked for miles and miles with the book distributors to encourage Śrīnivāsa, Narottama and Śyāmānanda. They were out there with the most auspicious occasion. So even though they were very old, many of them, after several miles, they accepted the obeisances of Narottama and Śrīnivāsa and Śyāmānanda, they gave their blessing. But even the eldest, so old Kṛṣṇadāsa Kavirāja, along with Jīva Gosvāmī and a few others, they accompanied all the way to Mathurā on foot with the bullocks. On this great and momentous occasion, all the literatures of the Six Gosvāmīs, the Caitanya-caritāmṛta, they were all present in a very big, big trunk being taken. And these were being taken. So, from Mathurā then they headed on and they accompanied a party which was going to Jagannātha Purī of devotees. And finally, they reached the precincts of Bengal.
There, the King Vīra Haṁbhīra Mahārāja was the King of Bon-Viṣṇupura, what is now known as the Bankurā district. And he had his astrologer who told him whenever some very great wealth was entering the kingdom, and he had trained troops who would go, actually trained thieves and they would go and rob those people and bring back the money. This way he was maintaining his treasury in a very fat way. But there was a pious streak to this king that he liked to hear the Bhāgavatam. He would hear the Bhāgavatam. At the same time, he had this very bad habit of organizing some of his trained troops to rob the innocent wayfarers on his road. So his astrologer said, the greatest jewel is being brought by great, great mahājanas, by great exalted people. The greatest jewel of wealth is being brought some most valuable jewel.
And so, he told, he sent out his troops, his trained undercover agents, that, “You go there, but you don’t hurt anyone, you don’t kill anyone. You just take away the. By stealing, you take away the wealth and then you bring back to me.” So, Śrīnivāsa and Śyāmānanda and Narottama Ṭhākura were, they were accompanying and that night they were all resting and these people came and saw here is. The guards are all asleep. Here is the bullock cart and there is this big box on it, this big trunk, huge wooden trunk, all bound up. So, they took it in the middle of the night. No one was disturbed. They took it away and went back to Viṣṇupura. When they woke up in the morning. “The books, the books. Where are the books? Where are the books? No, no, the BOOKS!” They went insane here.
Here all the Vaiṣṇavas gave them all the books from Vṛndāvana and every… the Caitanya-caritāmṛta, the Hari-bhakti-vilāsa, the Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu, every single. And they are gone. They were just out of their bodies. They are smashing their head. They immediately wanted to commit suicide. They didn’t know what to do. They were completely destroyed. It took days just for Śrīnivāsa to convince them not to commit suicide. To the other two he said, “I will definitely, I will find it.” But someone came up and said, “You should go to Bon-Viṣṇupura.” There is a great King there that reads the Bhāgavatam. He will be able to help you, no doubt. And meanwhile all the news... the news was already carried back to Vṛndāvana and all the Vaiṣṇavas just completely in separation. All the books were gone. They are completely... no eating and sleep. Everything which is their minds are completely disturbed.
And you can imagine the responsibilities given by all these great Vaiṣṇavas. So how these three preachers felt so. So, Śrīnivāsa Ācārya he was determined to find those books, otherwise how could he live? So, he said, “This must be the Lord’s desire, else how this can happen?” This is inconceivable whole way, no difficulty, so suddenly… this must be some desire of the Lord. This is not an ordinary circumstance. So, he sent Narottama dāsa Ṭhākura and Śyāmānanda Paṇḍita to Kheturī, the Padmā River for preaching. And he said, “I will find the books and inform you. You don’t do anything rash.” So, then he went to this Bon-Viṣṇupura and there he went into King’s courtroom, and he found that they are reading the Bhāgavatam but they are giving some obscure interpretation. So, he got the opportunity to give the Bhāgavatam class by making a few challenges.
And when he was giving the class immediately King Vīra Haṁbhīra, “Could this person…?”, You see what happened was when he got the books. First, he rewarded his thieves, gave them money and he opened the box to see what was the books. He said, “Oh no, these books. These are the books of some great brāhmaṇa. Who can understand these books? What is it? Used to start? It is all about Kṛṣṇa. Now I have done it. Now all my pious activities have been finished. I have stolen the granthas, the sacred scriptures from some great saints.” And now finally all my thieving, everything, the reaction has all come to me because finally now I have done it. I have stolen from the brāhmaṇa these literatures instead of this, the ordinary materialistic karmī. Somehow, just by my, by my karma, somehow, I have stolen these books from such a great, must be a great who could own such books, who couldn’t even understand what they say.
So, he sent out his own ambassador and said, “You must find who these books belong to. I must find that person. Otherwise, I am finished. As a king, I will lose all, everything that I, whatever I have had this, my attachment to this wealth has finished me.” So, as soon as he saw Śrīnivāsa, he said, “This may be that person. What an extraordinary, beautiful person. Great, you know, had very beautiful features. Just by looking at him you could feel Kṛṣṇa conscious in his presence.” So, when Śrīnivāsa started giving the Bhāgavatam class and he was so astonished, immediately fell down at his feet and offered his obeisances, said, “You are a great spiritual master.”
And he took him into his private quarters and requested, “Who are you and what is your mission?” And he explained that, “The Supreme Lord Caitanya, Kṛṣṇa Himself has appeared in Navadvīpa with His associates, Nityānanda, Haridāsa and so many others and they have come down just to distribute pure love of Kṛṣṇa. And they has sent Rūpa and Sanātana who were the prime ministers of the Hussain Shah to Vṛndāvana and so many others. And they have written so many literatures on bhakti. And these literatures, I was entrusted with the task of bringing them to distribute to all of the devotees here and to preach. But on the way all the books were stolen away.”
And hearing the king fell down and said, “I used to criticize Rūpa and Sanātana, why they gave up their kingdom. I am such a sinful person.” He said, “Now this by your, by your instruction I can understand how fallen I am. I was the… I am the rascal who has stolen these books. This is my bad habit. So you please, you must, you must have your mercy on me. I have these books, I will return them. Please, you must have your mercy.” And so Śrīnivāsa Ācārya said, “I will initiate you in the Harināma. You must chant this Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra.” And when the King told his wife what happened the queen, she went and she was so eager she immediately begged Śrīnivāsa for initiation. And Śrīnivāsa, he got his books back and initiated the King Vīra Haṁbhīra Mahārāja. Later he also gave him Kṛṣṇa mantra. And the King made his whole kingdom Kṛṣṇa conscious. He made Śrīnivāsa Ācārya, the rāja-guru. And with the help of the king then he got the books copied. Because in those days they didn’t have multi-lift offset but they had single feather or whatever. (laughter)
So, it was a laborious task. And their literatures were copied and then distributed. So, when you have the support of the King or the Government then it is very easy to distribute Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Whenever ever Śrīnivāsa go, the king would send some. Of course, he would refuse because in those days no one bothered sādhus anyway. But, out of respect, the king would always send his armed guards. He would send messengers to the other kings and other rulers and open all the doors. Of course, Śrīnivāsa was transcendental, but anyway it was very helpful. So, working with government support not only purifies the king but it helps the preachers. We can see the importance of becoming, making the governments – Kṛṣṇa conscious because actually Śrīnivāsa he was able to distribute these books very rapidly.
And even that king, just although he was sinful, just because he had the Bhāgavatam. It is said actually that because he had the Bhāgavatam in his courtroom, even though it wasn’t properly explained that purified him. Which confirms in another way, what Prabhupāda has always told us that even the people take the book, and they just hold it in their hand. They just read one word, even if it is just in their house, they benefit. Then they can reach perfection. Actually, as soon as he took those books and he saw the books of the Gosvāmīs, he became completely purified just by the presence of the transcendental literatures. That is how powerful they are. No one can estimate the potency of these books just by association with them, one becomes purified.
So just if we can just even getting our books in the quarters of the presidents and administrators, that alone will help to purify them and help them to reach perfection. So of course, in one respect we can see that how difficult it is to distribute Kṛṣṇa consciousness all over the world. So many unfavorable governments that these governments, if they don’t become Kṛṣṇa conscious, they get so many reactions that very quickly they just get so much implicated that it will be very difficult, you can understand, to maintain the status quo. You can see that Kṛṣṇa either they have to become Kṛṣṇa conscious or they will destroy themselves. There is no alternative.
Because when the Government is not directing the citizens along the path of God consciousness and they are getting all the reactions of their sinful life, as the sinful life escalates and the karma accumulates, the burden becomes so great that they either have to surrender or crush under the weight. Where is the alternative? Actually, of course, Kṛṣṇa was the perfect king. He always engaged all of his citizens in Kṛṣṇa conscious activities automatically, just by His presence. Actually, the devotees of Kṛṣṇa, of course in Vṛndāvana, they felt great separation from Lord Kṛṣṇa. They were not too happy that He has become the Great King in Dvārakā. They wished that He was back in Vṛndāvana.
Sanātana Gosvāmī once explained how one devotee, after traveling through many different places, finally reached the holy transcendental land of Dvārakā. And there he was waiting outside with Ugrasena and others Uddhava, and they were all eager to see Kṛṣṇa. They said that, “Today Kṛṣṇa is very upset”, and “O Dvārakānātha! O Dvārakādhīśa!”, then he started to glorify Kṛṣṇa as the Yadunandana, as the... and then here are all Your... here are all. Here is Ugrasena. Here is Rukmiṇī. Here is everyone. Then you know, then Kṛṣṇa, He was brought back into this Dvārakā mood. Otherwise Kṛṣṇa, for a moment He had completely gone into Vṛndāvana pastime. And all the queens, they were looking, and they saw that actually Kṛṣṇa, how actually He was completely transcendentally, I mean that they were defeated by the devotees of Vṛndāvana. That He had become so overcome by love with the devotees of Vṛndāvana and Rukmiṇī, she accepted defeat that this is... they are so great but then they was Satyabhāmā, she was furious. How did they have this affection? More, you know, their right-side and left-side consorts, even the queens. So they have different moods.
Rukmiṇī, she was very tolerant. She was very. “Yes, they are so great devotees.” Satyabhāmā was envious like anything in a good way. Jealous, not envious. How they... Kṛṣṇa loves them so much. So then finally they brought Kṛṣṇa back to His Dvārakā mood. And then He became very angry that in this way He had been tricked. He could realize immediately everything and became very angry but then Balarāma wouldn’t let Him get out of the Dvārakā. He said, He wouldn’t let anyone speak about Vṛndāvana at that moment. And He just kept everything because He knew that if anything happened a moment, He did go back into His separation of Vṛndāvana. It did be all over. He did start crying again and thinking about... because He became. He fell down. When heard the devotees were suffering. He said, “I am so cruel. I want to go”, and then He just became completely absorbed in the transcendental mood.
So, no one can understand what are the pastimes of Kṛṣṇa. He comes down acting like an ordinary. It seemed ordinary. How is it ordinary? But He comes down in the human society and acts as a King and as a cowherd. But actually, He is completely transcendental. Completely transcendental. And His pastime is simply to expand the transcendental devotion of His devotees. So, if people in general could just hear about these pastimes of the Lord. Get the books glorifying the Lord, you see. Then everyone, from the king down to the garbage man. Everyone would be completely relieved from all this burden. So when Kṛṣṇa was present, of course He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The whole planet was completely transcendentally situated. It was every... all the seasons and all everything was just perfect, organized by Kṛṣṇa’s presence.
And the people were all thinking of Kṛṣṇa, even the demons. Of course they were thinking of Kṛṣṇa, but of course they did not have pure devotion. So, they were liberated in the brahma-jyoti. The brahma-jyoti liberation is fit for demons and impersonalists who are almost on the same category or are in the same category. But one way or another, everyone was being liberated by Kṛṣṇa’s presence, even though they are in this material world. So again, Kṛṣṇa has come in this Kali-yuga, he has come as nāma-avatāra, as the incarnation in the form of the holy name. So, by distributing the holy name, by this performance of saṅkīrtana, the whole world is purified. The whole world is elevated to the transcendental platform. And how effective is this transcendental as what Prabhupāda called poison in a good sense.
Because just by a little association, that is why in this Nāma-haṭṭa program, in the preaching program, the people even a little chanting in their home, a little reading in their home, a little practice in their home, even they are not able to follow everything. They do not realize that the transcendental, auspicious poison is acting. That within a very short time they will not have attachment for anything except Kṛṣṇa consciousness if they maintain this transcendental medicine of reading Prabhupāda’s books and chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa, taking prasāda, associating with pure devotees. So, if the kings, if the rulers, if the administrators, the government, even if the wealthy, respectful people would just support the distribution of books, distribution of prasāda, distribution of the Harināma, very quickly you would see a great change in the whole direction of society.
Śrīla Prabhupāda said yesterday. However, all these leaders, scientists, philosophers, he said, we reject them in a minute, immediately because they are all preaching complete nonsense. Not one of them is saying what is the nature of the soul? What is the nature of God? Simply how to increase ones eating, sleeping, mating and defending. Śrīla Prabhupāda said that the hogs and the dogs, they did not have to go to school and read Freud to learn how to have sex. They have that ability. So why spend so many millions and millions of dollars on big educational institutions when the whole goal of their life is simply sex, simply eating, simply sleeping and making war. What is the use of spending so much money? You didn’t spend so much on the hogs and dogs. They are pretty expert.
The purpose of human life is to become Kṛṣṇa consciousness, to hear and relish the pastimes of Kṛṣṇa and to work for the upliftment of the whole society. Unfortunately, the so-called leaders of society, they are the worst examples because they also... the previous leaders who trained them up were no better. So, everything they have, they have their intelligence, they have the power, they have the ability to speak. They just lack God consciousness. If they had Kṛṣṇa consciousness then everything would be nice. That is shown Vīra Haṁbhīra, although he was a thief, but just because he added Kṛṣṇa consciousness everything was perfect. He just needed a bona-fide guru, bona-fide Vaiṣṇava spiritual master and everything was perfect. So therefore, Pṛthu Mahārāja, he was very eager that the citizens should be taught their respective duties. This is the responsibility of the king of the administrator of the temple president. Everyone should know their responsibilities in Kṛṣṇa consciousness and perform them, then everything becomes auspicious and everyone chants,
Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare/
Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare
Thank you very much. Any questions?
Question: (inaudible)
Jayapatākā Swami: Śrīla Prabhupāda walked in one time and they had a… because in India, the brāhmaṇas from certain states are very strict vegetarians and under the guidance of initiating devotees cooking for the Deity. Śrīla Prabhupāda thought that was alright. But I remember one time using material intelligence they thought that the non-brāhmaṇa who used to roll the capātīs was a better cook because when he cooked the food, it tastes better. Śrīla Prabhupāda walked in the room and saw who was cooking because materially he was maybe appeared to be a better cook. And Śrīla Prabhupāda preferred the devotee, initiate devotees cook but agreed that you know brāhmaṇa, He said, “Brāhmaṇas could cook because in India, it took a while for the devotees to actually be able to prepare it nicely. So, these brāhmaṇa from Rajasthan, the Marwadi cooks proper. He liked their cooking. He thought it was all right. When he saw this non-brāhmaṇa cooking, he said, “You are eating the food of a fifth-class person. This is a food fit for ghosts. You are eating the food fit for ghosts.” Like Lord Indra’s thunderbolt appeared to be very insignificant compared to those words. And he instructed that at least we had to use a vegetarian pure brāhmaṇa cook. If not, an initiated person was not expert enough. So, it is very important that these brāhmaṇas in Calcutta, they still use a brāhmaṇa. They bow down to the Deities and they chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. So, in that way they are actually very good.
They are maybe at least kaniṣṭha-adhikārīs and the whole thing is supervised by the head pūjārī. But that is like the line we have understood from Śrīla Prabhupāda’s instructions that anything else is definitely out of the question. He said actually a non-brāhmaṇa should never touch the fire. He said they can roll a capātī or cut the vegetable, but they shouldn’t touch the fire. The fire has to be touched by the brāhmaṇa, the capātī. So, the actual cooking is done by someone initiated. That is other thing may be done by other people, but they should also be clean. But the actual fire touching the fire, that should be done by an initiated person. That was to be. Śrīla Prabhupāda explained it, otherwise you are eating it will pollute your brain. Any other question?
Question: (inaudible)
Jayapatākā Swami: Well, Śrīla Prabhupāda said that it actually says somewhere in the Manu-saṁhitā, that fishes, if you can eat fish, you can eat anything, that is the verse so smelly. The Śrīla Prabhupāda said that fish eaters, that actually fish causes one to become very materially intelligent, but it blocks one’s spiritual intelligence. It makes one very materialistic. Well, materialistic means atheistic, but intelligent. And actually, I think we are pointing out that in Japan they are very intelligent but they are atheistic, which exactly confirms the Śrīla Prabhupāda said, on the other hand, milk, which makes them very intelligent, but that intelligence is spiritual. Cow’s milk. When I was just in Brazil and they have A, B and C class milk. And the regional secretary told me that one day they gave him C milk and he took it and said, “Wow, this is so rich.” He said, “I never had such rich milk.”
And after he took it, he said I must have, you know, just left the cream in it. After he took the milk though, after about a half an hour his brain started to go and he was getting all cloudy and his head was achy. He said, what was that milk? And then they looked in the bottle and said, “Oh, it is C class milk.” And then on that day in the newspaper came out that the government had a new program, the C class milk. They were milking pigs, that one, swine[?], whatever. What do you call them? (laughter) One Swiney. These big, you know, they had the big Belgium, you know, whites, I don’t know what you call them, pinkies, you know, that they would produce 10 kilos of. They had special suction cuppers, you know, electric milking system and they would produce 10 kilos.
It was so rich, thick, you know, that they would dilute it with water and he would say for two days his brain was completely wrapped. And this is what they are giving in are the materialists. So, you can imagine what they are getting by taking milk is just like you are taking, right? The direct food milk immediately goes to the brain. If you take cow’s milk it goes immediately gives you intelligence. You can imagine what they are taking. They are giving the people pig’s milk. And Śrīla Prabhupāda said, “Don’t take buffalo-milk because it will make you dull-headed.” But I remember one time, Śrīla Prabhupāda someone suggested to him that pigs or dogs and he said, “Argh! That is not milk.” And now the humans are being fed that this is very healthy, rich. So this, you know, people are eating so much nonsense. They don’t realize what is happening to their brains.
This is the advancement thick pig’s milk. (laughter) So, this is where our society is heading. They have no simple thing. They don’t even have the slightest idea even what they are doing, what they are eating, how to be clean. They are just acting on their basis of their bewildered material intelligence. And therefore, they are ruining everything. Therefore, this Kṛṣṇa consciousness at least brings the people up to a basic level. Otherwise, you can see the society become more and more degraded. That everyone can be convinced just to chant even one round of Hare Kṛṣṇa. Just read the books, a little bit then becomes friends of Kṛṣṇa and maintain them by some program. Then at least you know that they won’t be eating pig’s milk. They will have that much intelligence. And it would be a hope that we can gradually, we can elevate them.
Devotee: Śrīla Ācārayapāda kī Jaya!
