Mahāprabhu's First Manifestation
at the House of Śuklāmbara Brahmacārī (Part 2)
11th February 2020, Śrī Dhāma Māyāpur, India

mūkaṁ karoti vācālaṁ paṅguṁ laṅghayate girim
yat-kṛpā tam ahaṁ vande śrī-guruṁ dīna-tāraṇam
paramānandaṁ mādhavaṁ śrī caitanya iśvaram

Hariḥ oṁ tat sat!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.32

pulake pūrṇita haila sarva-kalevara
sthira nahe prabhu kampa-bhare thara-thara

Jayapatākā Swami: All over the Lord’s body, His hairs were standing on end. He was not able to remain still. His body began to intensely quiver or shiver.

So the Lord, He was experiencing great ecstatic love of Kṛṣṇa. All the aśta-bhāva symptoms He manifested and thus all the devotees were overwhelmed because they have not seen anyone having such ecstatic symptoms, so intensely. So, Lord Caitanya, He was manifesting this love of Kṛṣṇa in such a way that everybody was astonished.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.33

śrīmān paṇḍita-ādi yata bhakta-gaṇa
dekhena apūrva kṛṣṇa-premera krandana

Jayapatākā Swami: Śrīmān Paṇḍita and all the other devotees, they all watched the wonderful pastime of the Lord, crying in pure love of Kṛṣṇa!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.34

catur-dike nayane bahaye prema-dhāra
gaṅgā yena āsiyā karilā avatāra

Jayapatākā Swami: In all the four directions, the eyes of Lord Caitanya produced tears, which flew in all the directions, as if the Ganges had descended and appeared there.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.35

mane mane sabei cintena camatkāra
“e-mata ihāne kabhu nāhi dekhi āra

Jayapatākā Swami: So everybody was thinking and filled with wonder. They had never seen anyone like and never seen Him before manifesting these pastimes.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.36

śrī-kṛṣṇera anugraha haila ihāne
ki vaibhava pathe vā haila daraśane”

Jayapatākā Swami: Kṛṣṇa must be very pleased with Him and He received the mercy of Lord Kṛṣṇa, or maybe along the pathway He had seen something wonderful, on the way!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.37

bāhya-dṛṣṭi prabhura haila kata-kṣaṇe
śeṣe prabhu sambhāṣā karilā sabā sane

Jayapatākā Swami: After some time, the Lord regained His external consciousness, and He began to speak to everyone present there.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.38

prabhu kahe,—“bandhu saba! āji ghare yāha
kāli yathā bali’ tathā āsibāre cāha

Jayapatākā Swami: The Lord said, all of you friends, please go to your house today. Tomorrow, come where I tell you to.

So the Lord was displaying ecstacies which His associates had never seen before. But He told them, come to the place where I tell you and the indication was that He would reveal, why He was in such ecstasy!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.39

tomā sabā sahita nibhṛta eka sthāne
mora duḥkha sakala kariba nivedane

Jayapatākā Swami: So tomorrow, I will tell you all, in some solitary place. My sadness and the cause for this I will place before you.

So, the Lord, He would tell the devotees in a solitary place, the ecstasy He was feeling, the distress He was feeling, in separation in love for Lord Kṛṣṇa. He knew that materialistic people could not understand love of Kṛṣṇa and how one feels distressed in the separation of Kṛṣṇa. Because you are all devotees, I opened My heart, My wounded heart, and revealed the pain I feel due to separation from Kṛṣṇa to intimate devotees and friends like yourselves.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.40

kali sabe śuklāmbara-brahmacārī ghare
tumi āra sadāśiva āsiha satvare”

Jayapatākā Swami: Tomorrow, everyone come to the house of Śuklāmbara Brahmācārī and bring with you Sadāśiva and come early tomorrow.

Particularly, Lord Caitanya seemed to be talking to Śrīmān Paṇḍita the brother of Śrīvāsa Paṇḍita. Because, He said, tumi, in Bengali, He said, bring Sadāśiva also.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.41

sambhāṣa kariyā sabe karilā vidāya
yathā-kārye rahilena viśvambhara-rāya

Jayapatākā Swami: After talking to everyone, Viśvambhara bid them all farewell and then He was busy performing His household duties.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.42

niravadhi kṛṣṇāveśa prabhura śarīre
mahā-viraktera prāya vyavahāra kare

Jayapatākā Swami: In the body of Lord Caitanya, constantly Kṛṣṇa was manifested. He was in the mood of being most renounced because of love of Kṛṣṇa in His dealings. So the Lord, He was in the mood of knowledge, renunciation and devotion. He was eager to discuss and associate with the person who had the blackish complexion like a Tamāla tree. He was in intense separation of Kṛṣṇa. Thus, He revoked all desires for His personal enjoyment and He was totally absorbed in love of Kṛṣṇa.

Śrīmad Bhāgavatam (11.2.42):

bhaktiḥ pareśānubhavo viraktir
anyatra caiṣa trika eka-kālaḥ
prapadyamānasya yathāśnataḥ syus
tuṣṭiḥ puṣṭiḥ kṣud-apāyo ’nu-ghāsam

“Devotion, direct experience of the Supreme Lord, and detachment from other things—these three occur simultaneously for one who has taken shelter of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, in the same way that pleasure, nourishment, and relief from hunger come simultaneously and increasingly, with each bite, for a person engaged in eating.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.43

bujhite nā pāre āi putrera carita
tathāpiha putra dekhi’ mahā-ānandita

Jayapatākā Swami: Śacī Mātā was not able to understand the conduct of her son. Still, seeing her son, she was overjoyed.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.44

‘kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa bali’ prabhu karaye krandana
āi dekhe,—aśru-jale bharila aṅgana

Jayapatākā Swami: The Lord wept, He cried in ecstasy saying, Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa! Śacī Mātā saw that His tears of love had filled up the courtyard.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.45

“kothā kṛṣṇa! kothā kṛṣṇa!” balaye ṭhākura
balite balite prema bāḍaye pracura

Jayapatākā Swami: The Lord said, where is Kṛṣṇa? WHERE IS KṚṢṆA! While He was saying this repeatedly, His love of Kṛṣṇa greatly increased, unlimitedly increased.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.46

kichu nāhi bujhe āi kon vā kāraṇa
kara-yoḍe lailā āi govinda-śaraṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: Mother Śacī, His mother, could not understand anything, what was the cause of this. So with folded hands she took the shelter of Lord Govinda.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.47

harināmaprema-prakāśarūpa nija-avatāra-kāraṇa-rahasya-prakaṭanārambha—

ārambhilā mahāprabhu āpana-prakāśa
ananta brahmāṇda-maya haila ullāsa

Jayapatākā Swami: As Caitanya Mahāprabhu began to manifest His own self, the unlimited universes rejoiced.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.48

‘prema-vṛṣṭi karite prabhura śubhārambha’
dhvani śuni’ yāya yathā bhāgavata-vṛnda

Jayapatākā Swami: The showering of pure love of Kṛṣṇa which was begun by Lord Gaurāṅga. When the devotees heard this auspicious sound and the pure devotees ran there to see. So being very compassionate on the conditioned souls, Lord Caitanya began to shower love of Godhead on them at an auspicious moment. As soon as this news was circulated amongst the devotees, they immediately came to see Lord Gaurāṅga! Haribol! Gauuuuuurāṅga! Gauuuurāṅga! Gaurāṅga!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.49

ye-saba vaiṣṇava gelā prabhu-daraśane

Jayapatākā Swami: Those devotees, those Vaiṣṇavas who went to see the Lord, the Lord greeted them warmly.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.50

“kāli śuklāmbara-ghare milibā
āsiyāmora duḥkha nivedimu nibhṛte vasiyā”

Jayapatākā Swami: Tomorrow, at Śuklāmbara Brahmacārī’s house, I will meet with all of you! I will submit My sorrows to you in solitariness.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.51

hariṣe pūrṇita hailāśrīmān-paṇḍita

Jayapatākā Swami: Śrīmān Paṇḍita was filled with joy, he was delighted to see the wonderful manifestation of the Lord’s love of Kṛṣṇa!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.52

Jayapatākā Swami: After performing His morning duties, He went early the next day, He took a basket and happily collected flowers.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.53

eka kunda gācha āche śrīvāsa-mandire
kunda-rūpe kibā kalpa-taru avatare

Jayapatākā Swami: They were in the house of Śrīvāsa, there was a kunda flower tree, that appeared like an incarnation of a kalpa-vṛkṣa or desire tree, that gave flowers to everyone, unlimitedly!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.54

yateka vaiṣṇava tole tulite nā pare
akṣaya avyaya puṣpa sarva-kṣaṇa dhare

Jayapatākā Swami: The Vaiṣṇavas picked from that tree as many flowers as they liked, but the supply of flowers always remained inexhaustible and undiminished.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.55

ūṣaḥ-kāle uṭhiyā sakala bhakta-gaṇa
puṣpa tulibāre āsi’ hailā milana

Jayapatākā Swami: After rising in the morning, all the devotees would meet there regularly, to gather flowers.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.56

sabei tolena puṣpa kṛṣṇa-kathā rase
gadādhara, gopīnātha, rāmāñi, śrīvāse

Jayapatākā Swami: Everyone was picking flowers and they were absorbed in the mellow of discussing topics of Kṛṣṇa. There Gadādhara, Gopīnātha, Ramāi, and Śrīvāsa were all discussing topics of Kṛṣṇa as they picked flowers.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.57

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.58

sabei balena,—“āji baḍa dekhi hāsya?”
śrīmān kahena,—“āche kāraṇa avaśya”

Jayapatākā Swami: They all said, it seems you are very happy today? Śrīmān Paṇḍita replied, there is a cause, certainly there is a cause, a good reason!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.59

“kaha dekhi”balilena bhāgavata-gaṇa
śrīmān-paṇḍita bale,—“śunaha kāraṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: The devotees said, please explain, Śrīmān Paṇḍita replied, “listen to the reason.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.60

parama-adbhuta kathā, mahā asambhava
’nimāi-paṇḍita hailā parama vaiṣṇava’

Jayapatākā Swami: Ha! Ha! Ha! The most wonderful thing has occurred! Most impossible incident! Nimāi Paṇḍita has become the greatest Vaiṣṇava, parama-vaiṣṇava! So, the same Nimāi Paṇḍita who was the crest jewel of the logicians – He would debate and defeat everyone, now, this Nimāi Paṇḍita, previously, the logicians would laugh at and joke with the vaiṣṇavas, the same Nimāi Paṇḍita Himself has become a great vaiṣṇava, a pure devotee of the Lord!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.61

gayā haite āilena sakala kuśale
śuni’ āmi sambhāṣite gelāṅa vikāle

Jayapatākā Swami: Hearing that He came from Gayā, very happily, hearing that, I went to greet Him. I went yesterday afternoon.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.62

Jayapatākā Swami: Everything He said was in complete detachment from the world. I didn’t even see the slightest arrogance, even for a moment!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.63

ye sthāne dekhilena ye apūrva yathā

Jayapatākā Swami: In a secluded place, He began to discuss Kṛṣṇa-kathā. In different places, the wonderful things that He had seen, He discussed.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.64

pāda-padma-tīrthera laite mātra nāma

Jayapatākā Swami: With His whole body with great trembling and His hairs standing on end, He cried, Ha Kṛṣṇa! Ha Kṛṣṇa! HAAAA! KṚṢṆAAA! And then He fell to the ground! Haribol!

 Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.66

sarva aṅge dhātu nāhi, hailā mūrchita

Jayapatākā Swami: There was no sign of life in His body. He was completely unconscious. After some time, He got His external consciousness, and He was startled.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.67

Jayapatākā Swami: Finally, when He cried out calling, KṚṢṆAAA! KṚṢṆAAA! It appeared as if the Ganges had come herself and was flowing from His eyes!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.68

Jayapatākā Swami: But the devotees said I have seen Him with my eyes, I no longer consider Him an ordinary human being! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!

 Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.69

Jayapatākā Swami: He said this to everyone present, when He regained His external consciousness – meet Me tomorrow morning at Śuklāmbara Brahmacārī’s house.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.70

Jayapatākā Swami: The wonderful news I have said to you, you have every reason to believe it!

 Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 1.72

śrīmānera vacana śuniyā bhakta-gaṇe
’hari’ bali’ mahādhvani karilā takhane

Jayapatākā Swami: On hearing the news from Śrīmān Paṇḍita, the devotees chanted the name of Hari! Haribol! Ulu dhvani, Haridhvani! Hari! Hari! Hari! Hari!

So, we will end here. So He left Navadvīpa as Nimāi Paṇḍita, He came back from Gayā as Gaurahari. He started the saṅkīrtana movement. How fortunate were the people who saw the pastime of Śacīnandana in Navadvīpa dhāma? How exceedingly fortunate were those who were able to participate in His pastime of the saṅkīrtana movement!!! Just hearing about it is overwhelming! Think, to be present when the Lord was chanting!! Haribol! Hari Hari Hari Hari!

Is Jalangi here?

Question: Dear guru maharaj, Please accept my respectful obeisances, How does it serve and please Caitanya Mahāprabhu for us to hear about and share this intimate pastimes of His ecstacies. 2. In what mood should we try to hear these pastimes so that they have a deep effect on our heart?

—Vana vihārinā Campaka-latā devī dāsī .

Jayapatākā Swami: Vana vihārinā Campaka-latā devī dāsī. To hear about the pastimes of the Lord, it says this is the most direct and transcendental way to serve the Lord. When Lord Caitanya was talking with Rāmānanda Rāya, He said that all other services are external, when Rāmānanda Rāya said, hearing from the pure devotees, Lord Caitanya said, EI HA HOI! EI HA HOI! THIS IS IT! THIS IS IT! So you should not have any doubt while listening to Lord Caitanya’s pastimes. This is it! THIS IS IT! This is the way! And unfortunately our heart is so hard, that we are hearing these pastimes without developing love of Kṛṣṇa, that we can cry but we are crying for Kṛṣṇa. Ha! Ha! If you are not able to cry, that you are not crying for Kṛṣṇa, then Śrīla Prabhupāda said that cry that you are not crying that you are not cryong for Kṛṣṇa! If you are not able to do that, then cry that you are not crying that you are not crying, that you are not crying for Kṛṣṇa! Somehow or another we should be crying! Actually, Lord Caitanya, He was showing us that how by serving the Lord in separation, you actually please the Lord. In Kali yuga, we don’t have any direct access to Kṛṣṇa. Of course, if He wants He can reveal Himself. But usually we are not so fortunate. But by feeling separation, by hearing the pastimes of the Lord, and wanting to be with Him to experience those blissful moments of His pastimes, that is the real essence of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. If we want to serve Kṛṣṇa, if we want to hear about Kṛṣṇa, that is actual spiritual world. But usually we are just thinking, Kṛṣṇa, I need a new car, I need a husband, I need this, I need that. We are not thinking about Kṛṣṇa. But if we are thinking about Kṛṣṇa, if we want Kṛṣṇa, then that’s the perfection of life. Of course, it may take some time to awaken in our hearts. So in the meantime, we try to do our devotional service but maybe by hearing about Lord Caitanya’s mercy, about His ecstasy, maybe something will stir in our heart and actually we will be able to taste a drop of that pure love that He has oceans of! OCEANS! Ganges! How much water is in the Ganges! How many drops! Lord Caitanya has more love than that!! Do you accept? Ha! Ha!

Question: Please accept my respectful obeisances, I could not understand how the Lord’s transcendental ecstasy could be disturbed by the presence of Śrīvāsa Thakur’s mother-in-law who was not a devotee during His kīrtana? Why was the kirtan nocturnal and closed in the early days and later during the Ratha-yātrā in Purī, the Lord exhibited ecstacies in kīrtana, publicly? Please enlighten us.

—Lalitāngī Rādhā devī dāsī.

Jayapatākā Swami: When Lord Caitanya came back from Gayā, His ecstacies were criticized by the non-devotees and they couldn’t understand. They thought He was sick. He had disturbed airs and they criticized. So, He was invited by Śrīvāsa to have nocturnal kīrtanas in his garden house. So, in the presence of devotees, He would express His separation for Kṛṣṇa, He would express His transcendental ecstasy but when Śrīvāsa’s mother-in-law was hiding, then He said He didn’t feel ecstasy. He was just actually showing that how Śrīvāsa was so great, that in order to satisfy Lord Caitanya, Śrīvāsa mistreated his mother-in-law. Normally, mother-in-laws are treated with respect. But Śrīvāsa showed that he was more attached to Lord Caitanya than His family relations.

Hare Kṛṣṇa!
