Viśvambhara Eats Cooked Rice from Śuklāmbara Brahmacārī and Bestows Mercy on Vijaya (Part 2)

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.26

ki garbha-thoḍera svādu nā pāri kahite
ālagoche e-mata vā rāndhila kon-mate

Jayapatākā Swami: I cannot describe the wonderful taste of the banana stem; how did you cook without touching it?!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.27

tumi hena jana se āmāra bandhu-kula
tomā’-saba lāgi’ se āmāra ādi mūla”

Jayapatākā Swami: Persons like you are My friends! because of persons like you, I incarnate! The Lord says in Bhagavad-gītā, that He comes to protect the devotees and to annihilate the miscreants, paritrāṇāya sādhūnāṁ

vināśāya ca duṣkṛtām dharma-saṁsthāpanārthāya sambhavāmi yuge. So He comes because they are devotees, they are completely dependent on Him, and the devotees are usually disturbed by the non-devotee atheist type of people. The Lord protects the devotees, and annihilates the non-devotees, for disturbing the devotees for no reason.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.28

śuklāmbarera prati prabhu kṛpā darśane bhaktagaṇera premāśru varṣaṇa—

śuklāmbara-prati dekhi’ kṛpāra vaibhava
kāndite lāgila anyonye bhakta saba

Jayapatākā Swami: Seeing the great mercy, the Lord bestowed on His devotee, Śuklāmbara, the devotees amongst themselves began to cry.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.29

ei mata prabhu punaḥ punaḥāsvādiyā
karilena bhojana ānanda-yukta haiyā

Jayapatākā Swami: In this way the Lord again and again, He relished the meal and to His full satisfaction. ānanda-yukta – fully satisfied.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.30

bhaktihīna koṭīśvarao caitanya-kṛpāya vañcita; bhagavāna bhaktivaśa—

ye prasāda pāyena bhikṣuka śuklāmbara
dekhuka abhakta yata pāpī koṭīśvara

Jayapatākā Swami: So Lord Caitanya was accepting the prasāda from His devotee, Śuklāmbara. Although Śuklāmbara was a beggar. Let the non-devotee millionaires who are sinful by nature, let them see the mercy that the beggar, Śuklāmbara, received! Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura Prabhupāda said that it is not true that if one has hundreds and millions of dollars, they can see the Supreme Lord. Śuklāmbara was a beggar, he had nothing of his own. But the Lord was very satisfied to take his prasāda, because he was a pure devotee. So Śuklāmbara satisfied Lord Gaurasundara with the rice he collected from begging. Sinful non-devotees cannot understand this mystery, how the Lord is satisfied by the humble offering of His pure devotees!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.31

dhana-jane pāṇḍitye caitanya nāhi pāi
‘bhakti-rase vaśa prabhu’ sarva-śāstre gāi

Jayapatākā Swami: By wealth, prowess and learning, one cannot attain Lord Caitanya. He can only be controlled by the bhakti rasa, by the mellow of devotional service, this is what all the scriptures sing.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.32

vasilena prabhu preme bhojana kariyātām
būla khāyena prabhu hāsiyā hāsiyā

Jayapatākā Swami: The Lord, He sat down in love of Kṛṣṇa and after He finished His meal, with great satisfaction. He smiled again and again as He chewed betel nuts. The Lord was very satisfied by the offering of Śuklāmbara Brahmacārī, we should see that the Lord can only be satisfied by having pure devotion for Him.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.33

brahmādira vandya-prabhura prasāda-pātra bhaktagaṇera śire dhāraṇa—

pātra lai’ bhṛtya-gaṇa bhulilā ānande
brahmā, śiva, ananta ye pātra śire vande

Jayapatākā Swami: The devotees took the remnants and grabbed themselves in ecstasy, by having the remnants that Brahmā, Śiva, Anantadeva worship! so, they had the remnants of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.34

ki ānanda haila se bhikṣukera ghare
e-mata kautuka kare prabhu viśvambhare

Jayapatākā Swami: Who can describe the loving ecstasy which filled the house of that beggar, in the sets of these pastime, joyfully performed by Lord Viśvambhara?

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.35

prabhura kṛṣṇa-kathā prasaṅga o śuklāmbara-gṛhe viśrāma—

kṛṣṇa-kathā-prasaṅga kahiyā kata-kṣaṇa
seikhāne mahāprabhu karilāśayana

Jayapatākā Swami: After discussing the pastimes of Lord Kṛṣṇa for sometime, Lord Gaurāṅga Mahāprabhu at that place, took His rest and lied down there.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.36

vijayera aṅge prabhura hastasparśa o vijayera vaibhava-darśana—

bhakta-gaṇa karilena tathāi śayana
tathi madhye adbhuta dekhaye eka jana

Jayapatākā Swami: Then His devotees also lied down at the same place, they lied down there. Amongst them there was one person who saw something wonderful!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.37

ṭhākurera eka śiṣya śrī-vijaya-dāsa
se mahāpuruṣe kichu dekhilā prakāśa

Jayapatākā Swami: There was a disciple of the Lord, his name was Śrī Vijaya dāsa, and that great soul, he saw some divine vision.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.38

navadvīpe tāṅra mata nāhi āṅkhariyā
prabhure aneka puṅthi diyāche likhiyā

Jayapatākā Swami: In Navadvīpa, there was no writer as expert as him, he copied many books for the Lord! So, Śrī Vijaya dāsa was by profession, a copyist, he copied books for people. He was very fast, very expert! In those days there were no printing presses. So if you wanted a book, you had to have someone copy it and so that is what Vijaya dāsa did!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.39

‘āṅkhariyā-vijaya’ kariyā sabe ghoṣe’
marma nāhi jāne loka bhakti-hīna doṣe

Jayapatākā Swami: People called him as Copyist Vijaya, but they didn’t know, because they were devoid of devotion, they didn’t know of his actual glories!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.40

śayane ṭhākura tāna aṅge dilā hasta
vijaya dekhena ati apūrva samasta

Jayapatākā Swami: While the Lord was lying down, His hand was placed on the body of Vijaya, who then saw something most wonderful! You want to hear? We will stop here!! Who wants to hear?

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.41

hema-stambha-prāya hasta dīrgha subalana
paripūrṇa dekhe tathi ratna-ābharaṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: Like that, he saw, the Lord’s hand was long like a column, almost like a column, and it was covered with jeweled and various ornaments!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.42

śrī-ratna-mudrikā yata aṅgulīra mule
nā jāni ki koṭi sūrya-candra-maṇi jvale

Jayapatākā Swami: So on His fingers, were decorated with engraved jewel rings, It appeared that tens of millions of suns and moons and pearls were shining!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.43

ābrahma paryanta saba dekhe jyotirmaya
hasta dekhi’ parānanda hailā vijaya

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Vijaya saw that the effulgence on the Lord’s hands went up to the Brahmā-loka, and seeing the Lord’s hands became filled with transcendental ecstasy.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.44

vijayera cītkāropakrama o prabhura niṣedha—

vijaya udyoga mātra karilāḍhākite
śrī-hasta dilena prabhu tāṅhāra mukhete

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Vijaya was about to shout when the Lord immediately placed His lotus hand over Vijaya’s mouth!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.45

prabhu bale,—“yata dina muñi thākoṅ ethā
tāvat kāhāre pāche kaha e khathā”

Jayapatākā Swami: So the Lord said, as long as I stay in this world, you will not tell anyone about this incident!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.46

vijayera huṅkāra o mūrchā—

eta bali’ hāse prabhu vijaya cāhiyā
vijaya uṭhilā mahā-huṅkāra kariyā

Jayapatākā Swami: After saying this, Prabhu glanced at Vijaya and smiled, then Vijaya jumped up and loudly shouted, roared loudly!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.47

vijayera huṅkāre jāgilā bhakta-gaṇa
dharena vijaya tabu nā yāya dharaṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: Vijaya’s loud roaring woke up all the devotees, they tried to restrain Vijaya by holding him, but they were not able.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.48

kata-kṣaṇa unmāda kariyā mahāśaya
śeṣe hailā parānanda mūrcchita tanmaya

Jayapatākā Swami: For some time, he was jumping around like a mad man. Finally, Vijaya became absorbed in ecstasy and fell unconscious!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.49

vijayera avasthā-darśane bhaktagaṇera ānanda-krandana—

bhakta saba bujhilena—vaibhava-darśana
sarva-gaṇa lāgilena karite krandana

Jayapatākā Swami: The devotees all understood, they realized that Vijaya had seen the Lord’s opulences, all the devotees began to cry in ecstasy!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.50

prabhura bhaktagaṇa-sthāne vijayera viṣaya-vivṛti o vijayera gāesparśa-dvārā cetanatā-vidhāna—

sabāre jijñāse prabhu,—”ki bala ihāra?
ācambite vijayera baḍa ta’ huṅkāra”

Jayapatākā Swami: The Lord asked everyone, what happened to Vijaya! Why is Vijaya suddenly roaring loudly?!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.51

prabhu bale,—“jānilāṅa gaṅgāra prabhāva
vijayera viśeṣe gaṅgāya anurāga

Jayapatākā Swami: The Lord said, I think it is the influence of the Ganges!! poor Vijaya, he is very devoted to the Ganges!!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.52

nahe śuklāmbara-gṛhe deva-adhiṣṭāna
kibā dekhilena ihā kṛṣṇa se pramāṇa”

Jayapatākā Swami: Otherwise, in Śuklāmbara’s house, maybe Lord Kṛṣṇa is present, only He knows what Vijaya has seen!!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.53

eta bali’ vijayera aṅge diyā hasta
cetana karila, hāse vaiṣṇava-samasta

Jayapatākā Swami: So saying all that, He put his hand on the body of Vijaya and then he regained his consciousness and the Lord and all the vaiṣṇavas laughed!!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.54

vijayera saptāhakāla jaḍaprāya bhāva—

uṭhiyāo vijaya hailā jaḍa-prāya
sapta dina bhramilena sarva nadīyāya

Jayapatākā Swami: Although Vijaya got up, he remained stunned, practically inert, for seven days, he wandered around Navadvīpa in that state!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.55

nā āhāra, nā nidrā, rahita deha-dharma
bhramena vijaya, keha nāhi jāne marma

Jayapatākā Swami: No eating, no sleeping, no bodily activities, Vijaya wandered around and no one understood the mystery behind this!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.56

kata dine bāhya-ceṣṭā jānilā vijaya
śuklāmbara-gṛhe hena saba raṅga haya

Jayapatākā Swami: After some days, Vijaya regained his external consciousness, such pastimes took place at the house of Śuklāmbara Brahmacārī.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.57

śuklāmbarera bhāgya-praśaṁsā o upākhyānera phalaśruti—

śuklāmbara-bhāgya balibāre śakti kāra
gauracandra anna-parigraha kailā yāra

Jayapatākā Swami: Who has the power to describe the good fortune of Śuklāmbara?! His rice was eaten by Gauracandra!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.58

ei mata bhāgyavanta śuklāmbara ghare
goṣṭhīra sahita gaurasundara vihare

Jayapatākā Swami: So in this way, Gaurasundara enjoyed pastimes with His associates in the house of the fortunate Śuklāmbara.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.59

vijayere kṛpā,—śuklāmbarānna-bhojana
ihāra śravaṇe mātra mile bhakti-dhana

Jayapatākā Swami: By hearing about the mercy on Vijaya prabhu and the acceptance of Śuklāmbara’s rice, by hearing these pastimes, one achieves the treasure of pure devotional service!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.60

hena mate navadvīpe śrī-gaurasundara
sarva-veda-vandya līlā kare nirantara

Jayapatākā Swami: So in this way Śrī Gaurasundara constantly performed pastimes in Navadvīpa, that are glorified by all the Vedas.

So end the chapter, “Viśvambhara Eats Cooked Rice From Śuklāmbara Brahmacārī and Bestows Mercy on Vijaya”

Question: What should be one’s consciousness during Navadvīpa parikramā and what should one pray to Lord Gauracandra during the saṅkalpa?

Jayapatākā Swami: We should pray that we can complete the Navadvīpa parikramā, keep Kṛṣṇa consciousness in the parikramā and Gaurāṅga consciousness.

Question: Dear Gurudeva. Please accept my respectful obeisances. How can I put my full attention during rendering any sevā?

Jayapatākā Swami: If we think that we are doing the seva for the pleasure of Kṛṣṇa, then naturally we will be focused on Kṛṣṇa. Like if you are buying a gift for your loved one, on say Christmas or birthday, then naturally when you are thinking what that person likes, is it pleasing to him or her? So we should also do our services in such a way that Kṛṣṇa will be pleased.

Question: Guru Mahārāja, I saw dream a month ago that you were giving me brāhmaṇa-dīkṣā, what should I do now? – Prāṇatoṣa Subala dāsa

Jayapatākā Swami: For getting brāhmaṇa-dīkṣā, complete all the requirements – Bhakti-śāstri, reading the Bhāgavatam cantos, etc. Complete them. Hare Kṛṣṇa!

Anyone wants books, please get them.
