Continuation of the compilation of Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya book, today’s chapter entitled as:

Phalaśruti- The Result of Hearing About the Beḍā-kīrtana Pastimes of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.

 Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 11. 213

sandhyāya mandirāṅgane bhaktagaṇasaha kīrtanārambha:—
sabā lañā gelā prabhu jagannāthālaya
kīrtana ārambha tathā kaila mahāśaya

Translation: The great Personality of Godhead, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, then took all of them to the temple of Jagannātha and began the congregational chanting of the holy name there.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 11. 214

sakalake paḍichāra mālyacandana-dāna, caturddike catuḥ sampradāyera
mahā-kīrtanārambha:—
sandhyā-dhūpa dekhi’ ārambhilā saṅkīrtana
paḍichā āsi’ sabāre dila mālya-candana

Translation: After seeing the dhūpa-ārati of the Lord, they all began congregational chanting. Then the paḍichā, the superintendent of the temple, came and offered flower garlands and sandalwood pulp to everyone.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 11. 215

cāri-dike cāri sampradāya karena kīrtana
madhye nṛtya kare prabhu śacīra nandana

Translation: Four parties were then distributed in four directions to perform saṅkīrtana, and in the middle of them the Lord Himself, known as the son of mother Śacī, began to dance.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, the kīrtana was organized in a very geometric formation, four sides of the Lord, east, west north and south, four different parties and Śacīnandana, the Supreme Personality of Godhead Himself was in the center.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 11. 216

aṣṭa mṛdaṅga bāje, batriśa karatāla
hari-dhvani kare sabe, bale—bhāla, bhāla

Translation: In the four groups there were eight mṛdaṅgas and thirty-two cymbals. All together they began to vibrate the transcendental sound, and everyone said, “Very good! Very good!”

Jayapatākā Swami: So, each party had two mṛdaṅgas and eight karatāla so like this the kīrtana was very well organized and the sound was revibrating like symphonically.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 11. 217

kīrtanera dhvani mahā-maṅgala uṭhila
caturdaśa loka bhari’ brahmāṇḍa bhedila

Translation: When the tumultuous vibration of saṅkīrtana resounded, all good fortune immediately awakened, and the sound penetrated the whole universe through the fourteen planetary systems.

Jayapatākā Swami: Since this sound of the chanting of the kīrtana with Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Mahāprabhu is transcendental, the sound went through the whole universe, and in this way the transcendental sound increased the reverse echo.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 11. 218

kīrtana-śravaṇe bahu purīvāsīra āgamana o vismaya:—
kīrtana-ārambhe prema uthali’ calila
nīlācala-vāsī loka dhāñā āila

Translation: When the congregational chanting began, ecstatic love immediately overflooded everything, and all the residents of Jagannātha Purī came running.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, the kīrtana of Lord Caitanya was so attractive that it was attracting all the people of Jagannātha Purī and everyone came running. So, this transcendental sound penetrated the whole universe.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 11. 219

kīrtana dekhi’ sabāra mane haila camatkāra
kabhu nāhi dekhi aiche premera vikāra

Translation: Everyone was astonished to see such a performance of saṅkīrtana, and they all agreed that never before had kīrtana been so performed and ecstatic love of God so exhibited.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, when Lord Caitanya would chant, it would fill the love of Kṛṣṇa in all directions. So members of the International Society of Kṛṣṇa consciousness need to perform kīrtana like this and penetrate the whole universe with good fortune.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 11. 220

‘beḍā-nṛtya’ kīrtana vā mandira-pradakṣiṇa-pūrvaka kīrtana:—
tabe prabhu jagannāthera mandira beḍiyā
pradakṣiṇa kari’ bulena nartana kariyā

Translation: At this time Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu circumambulated the temple of Jagannātha and continuously danced about the whole area.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, the temple of Nīlācala, Jagannātha Purī is quite large. So, Lord Caitanya circumambulated the entire temple. Siṁha-dvāra is known as the eastern door and there also doors on the west, north and south. The Lord went around the whole temple chanting and dancing with His associates.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 11. 221

prabhura aṣṭa-sāttvika vikāra:—
āge-pāche gāna kare cāri sampradāya
āchāḍera kāle dhare nityānanda rāya

Translation: As the circumambulation was performed, the four kīrtana parties sang in front and in the rear. When Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu fell down to the ground, Śrī Nityānanda Rāya Prabhu lifted Him up.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 11. 222

aśru, pulaka, kampa, sveda, gambhīra huṅkāra
premera vikāra dekhi’ loke camatkāra

Translation: While kīrtana was going on, there was a transformation of ecstatic love and much tears, jubilation, trembling, perspiration and deep resounding in the body of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Upon seeing this transformation, all the people present became very much astonished.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Caitanya showed ecstatic symptoms astonishing everyone. People will be happy, but Lord Caitanya here revealed that the real happiness is kṛṣṇa-prema. His happiness was so ecstatic that everyone was astonished.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 11. 223

pickāri-dhārā jini’ aśru nayane
cāri-dikera loka saba karaye sināne

Translation: The tears from the eyes of the Lord came out with great force, like water from a syringe. Indeed, all the people who surrounded Him were moistened by His tears.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, this is not an ordinary crying. Here it explains that the tears that were flowing around, coming from Lord Caitanya's eyes was like water from a syringe. All the people who were watching, they became wet with tears of Lord Caitanya. This transcendental ecstasy of Lord Caitanya was something that no one has ever seen before.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 11. 224

‘beḍā-nṛtya’ mahāprabhu kari’ kata-kṣaṇa
mandirera pāche rahi’ karaye kīrtana

Translation: After circumambulating the temple, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu for some time remained at the rear of the temple and continued His saṅkīrtana.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, as I said there are doors on each side of temple, there is like a big square or rectangle in the middle. So in rear of the temple they continued to chant and dance.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 11. 225

catuḥsampradāya-madhye prabhura nartana:—
cāri-dike cāri sampradāya uccaiḥsvare gāya
madhye tāṇḍava-nṛtya kare gaurarāya

Translation: On all four sides the four saṅkīrtana groups chanted very loudly, and in the middle Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu danced, jumping high.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, the dancing of Lord Caitanya was described like tāṇḍava which means a very jubilant dancing, dancing spinning, jumping high. Devotees were chanting loudly and they were dancing on all sides and in the middle Lord Caitanya was jumping and dancing.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 11. 226

bahu-kṣaṇa nṛtya kari’ prabhu sthira hailā
cāri mahāntere tabe nācite ājñā dilā

Translation: After dancing for a long time, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu became still and ordered four great personalities to begin to dance.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 11. 227

cāri mahānta- (1) nityānanda, (2) advaita:—
eka sampradāye nāce nityānanda-rāye
advaita-ācārya nāce āra sampradāye

Translation: In one group Nityānanda Prabhu began to dance, and in another group Advaita Ācārya began to dance.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 11. 228

(3) vakreśvara, (4) śrīvāsa:—
āra sampradāye nāce paṇḍita-vakreśvara
śrīvāsa nāce āra sampradāya-bhitara

Translation: Vakreśvara Paṇḍita began to dance in another group, and in yet another group Śrīvāsa Ṭhākura began to dance.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, these four groups had Nityānanda Prabhu, Advaita Gosāñī in another group, Vakreśvara Paṇḍita in the third group and in the fourth group Śrīvāsa Ṭhākura. Lord Nityānanda is much like Lord Caitanya, His complexion was reddish gold and He was also tall like Lord Caitanya and he was dancing and Advaita Gosāñī was dancing, Vakreśvara Paṇḍita was famous to dance for seventy-two hours non-stop. Śrīvāsa Ṭhākura was in the fourth group chanting, so Lord Caitanya was watching with great bliss, how the four mahāntās were dancing.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 11. 229

kīrtana-madhye prabhura avasthāna o cārijanera nartana darśanārthe aiśvarya-prakāśa:—
madhye rahi’ mahāprabhu karena daraśana
tāhāṅ eka aiśvarya tāṅra ha-ila prakaṭana

Translation: While this dancing was going on, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu watched them and performed a miracle.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 11. 230

cāri-dike nṛtya-gīta kare yata jana
sabe dekhe,—prabhu kare āmāre daraśana

Translation: Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu stood in the middle of the dancers, and all the dancers in all directions perceived that Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu was looking at them.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, although logically a person can look, only see in one direction but Lord Caitanya, He is capable of everything. Each group dancing thought that the Lord was watching them. This was the miracle

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 11. 231

cāri janera nṛtya dekhite prabhura abhilāṣa
sei abhilāṣe kare aiśvarya prakāśa

Translation: Wanting to see the dancing of the four great personalities, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu exhibited this miracle of seeing everyone simultaneously.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, since Lord Caitanya wanted to watch all the great dancers at the same time, so He performed this miracle that He was simultaneously seeing all the dancers at the same time.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 11. 232

darśane āveśa tāṅra dekhi’ mātra jāne
kemane caudike dekhe,—ihā nāhi jāne

Translation: Everyone who saw Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu could understand that He was performing a miracle, but they did not know how it was that He could see on all four sides.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Kṛṣṇa expands Himself in various expansions when He is entering the 16,108 palaces in Dvārakā, He simultaneously enters into each palace. So, that He can see four kīrtana dancers, is not difficult for Him. Somehow or other people could sense that He was performing a miracle, but they did not understand what exactly was going on.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 11. 233

vraja-līlāya sakhāgaṇamadhye thākiyā kṛṣṇera pulina-bhojanera upamā:—
pulina-bhojane yena kṛṣṇa madhya-sthāne
caudikera sakhā kahe,—āmāre nehāne

Translation: In His own pastimes in Vṛndāvana, when Kṛṣṇa used to eat on the bank of the Yamunā and sit in the center of His friends, every one of the cowherd boys would perceive that Kṛṣṇa was looking at him. In the same way, when Caitanya Mahāprabhu observed the dancing, everyone saw that Caitanya Mahāprabhu was facing him.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 11. 234

sannihita nṛtyakārī bhaktake prabhura āliṅgana:—
nṛtya karite yei āise sannidhāne
mahāprabhu kare tāṅre dṛḍha āliṅgane

Translation: When someone came nearby while dancing, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu would tightly embrace him.

Jayapatākā Swami: This is the inconceivable mercy of the Lord, that while dancing He would embrace the dancers.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 11. 235

mahā-saṅkīrtana-nartana:—
mahā-nṛtya, mahā-prema, mahā-saṅkīrtana
dekhi’ premāveśe bhāse nīlācala-jana

Translation: Upon seeing the great dancing, great love and great saṅkīrtana, all the people of Jagannātha Purī floated in an ecstatic ocean of love.

Jayapatākā Swami: Hari Bol! Hari Bol! So, people of Jagannātha Purī they were surrounding the devotees, who were dancing and seeing the amazing dancing, hearing the kīrtana and the loving ecstasies all the people became overwhelmed. They never experienced such an ecstatic thing before.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 11. 236

pratāparudrera aṭṭālikopari kīrtana-darśana:—
gajapati rājā śuni’ kīrtana-mahattva
aṭṭālikā caḍi’ dekhe svagaṇa-sahita

Translation: Hearing the greatness of the saṅkīrtana, King Pratāparudra went up to the top of his palace and watched the performance with his personal associates.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 11. 237

rājāra vismaya o prabhupada-darśane utkaṇṭhā:—
kīrtana dekhiyā rājāra haila camatkāra
prabhuke milite utkaṇṭhā bāḍila apāra

Translation: The King was very much astonished to see Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu’s kīrtana, and the King’s anxiety to meet Him increased unlimitedly.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Rājā Pratāparudra, his desire to meet Lord Caitanya increased more and more as he watched this transcendental dancing of the Lord.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 11. 238

kīrtanānte puspāñjali-darśana-pūrvaka bhaktagaṇasaha gṛhe āgamana:—
kīrtana-samāptye prabhu dekhi’ puṣpāñjali
sarva vaiṣṇava lañā prabhu āilā vāsā cali’

Translation: After the saṅkīrtana ended, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu watched the offering of flowers to the Lord Jagannātha Deity. Then He and all the Vaiṣṇavas returned to His residence.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, apparently offering flowers to Lord Jagannātha, Baladeva and Subhadrā and Sudarśana cakra is one of the sevās. Lord Caitanya and His associates watched this seva and then they went to their residences

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 11. 239

sakalera prabhuhasta-vitarita prasāda-sammāna:—
paḍichā āniyā dila prasāda vistara
sabāre bāṅṭiyā tāhā dilena īśvara

Translation: The superintendent of the temple then brought large quantities of prasādam, which Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu personally distributed to all the devotees.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Mahāprabhu enjoys serving His devotees, so He personally distributed the māhā-prasāda. But the devotees they hanker to serve the Lord. So in this way this is a transcendental exchange between the devotees and the Lord.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 11. 240

bhaktagaṇake viśrāmārthe anumati-dāna:—
sabāre vidāya dila karite śayana
ei-mata līlā kare śacīra nandana

Translation: Finally, they all departed to rest in bed. In this way Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, the son of Śacīmātā, performed His pastimes.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, this is just one night in the day of Lord Caitanya and devotees participated in this ecstatic kīrtana and then they had the darśana of Lord Jagannātha. The Lord gave His devotees maha prasāda, and these devotees were filled with love of Kṛṣṇa.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 11. 241

prabhusaṅge avasthānakāle sakalera eirūpa kīrtanānanda-lābha:—
yāvat āchilā sabe mahāprabhu-saṅge
prati-dina ei-mata kare kīrtana-raṅge

Translation: As long as the devotees remained at Jagannātha Purī with Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, the pastime of saṅkīrtana was performed with great jubilation every day.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Kṛṣṇadāsa Kavirāja is just explaining one day, but every day was something like that. It was ecstatic kīrtana dancing and chanting every day.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 11. 1

nṛtyaśīla gaura-karttṛka viśvake premavanyāya nimajjana:—
aty-uddaṇḍaṁ tāṇḍavaṁ gauracandraḥ
kurvan bhaktaiḥ śrī-jagannātha-gehe
nānā-bhāvālaṅkṛtāṅgaḥ sva-dhāmnā
cakre viśvaṁ prema-vanyā-nimagnam

Translation: Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu merged the entire world into the ocean of ecstatic love by performing His beautiful dances within the temple of Jagannātha. He danced exquisitely and jumped high.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Kṛṣṇadāsa Kavirāja, he is trying to explain the situation. But actually we understand that Lord Caitanya’s dancing was indescribable and how fortunate were these devotees who were chanting and dancing with the Lord every night.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 11. 242

beḍānṛtya-kīrtana-śravaṇe cidvṛttisphūrtti:—
ei ta’ kahiluṅ prabhura kīrtana-vilāsa
yebā ihā śune, haya caitanyera dāsa

Translation: In this way I have explained the Lord’s pastime of saṅkīrtana, and I bless everyone with this benediction: By listening to this description, one will surely become a servant of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.

Jayapatākā Swami: Hari Bol! So, all the devotees who have heard this pastime of Lord Caitanya’s saṅkīrtana they will have the benediction of becoming a servant of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Hari Bol! Hari Bol!
