Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Book Compilation by His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami Mahārāja on 12th July 2020 in Śrīdhāma Māyāpur, India

mūkaṁ karoti vācālaṁ paṅguṁ laṅghayate girim
yat-kṛpā tam ahaṁ vande śrī-guruṁ dīna-tāraṇam
paramānandaṁ mādhavaṁ śrī caitanya iśvaram
hariḥ oṁ tat sat

Introduction: We are continuing reading the drama at Candraśekhara’s house, and Śrī Kṛṣṇa is being played by Advaita, but He appears very young, He has no beard, He looks like Kṛṣṇa. So, there is some discussion that Lord Gaurāṅga, He was the combination of Kṛṣṇa and Rādhā, for this drama, He divided into two, as Kṛṣṇa and Rādhā. As Kṛṣṇa He empowered or expanded into Advaita Gosāñi, and as Rādhā, He played it himself.

We are in a state of suspense, waiting for the divine body of His Holiness Bhakti Cāru Swami Mahārāja. Tomorrow is supposed to be his samādhi ceremony. Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.161

śrī-kṛṣṇaḥ (vihasya): ārye, vṛndā khalu tava naptryāḥ parijana-rūpā |

Translation: Śrī Kṛṣṇa: (laughing) Noble lady, Is Vṛnda your granddaughter’s retinue?

jaratī: are kaṇhaḍa! ettha ko saṁdeho | sā cceba pucchīadu | [are kṛṣna! atra kaḥ sandehaḥ? saiva pṛcchyatām |

Jaratī: (interjection of addressing inferiors or of calling angrily) Kṛṣṇa, what is the doubt here? You ask Herself (Vṛnda).

“Are! (interjection of addressing inferiors or of calling angrily) Kṛṣṇa, what is the doubt here? You ask herself (Vṛndā).”

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.162

kusumāsavaḥ (karṇe lagitvā): bho baassa! sā kkhu edāṇaṁ jjeba paccha-bādiṇī | [bho vayasya! sā khalu etāsām eva pakṣa-pātinī |]

Translation: Kusumāsava: (in Kṛṣṇa’s ear) Friend, she is on their side. Don’t ask her for evidence.

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.163

subalaḥ: kusumāsava! mā bhetavyam | lalite mad-vayasyasya nāma mudraivātra pramāṇam, yā khalu pratidrumam eva virājate |

Subala: Kusumāsava! Don’t be afraid! Lalitā! the sign of my friend’s name (Kṛṣṇa) is His proof. His name (Kṛṣṇa) is on every tree.

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.164

lalitā: ja[i] ebbaṁ tahabi amhe ṇa abarajjamha, saalāo jjeba ladāo maha pia-sahīṇām akkharaṅkidā teṇa kkhu ladāsu ko ahiāro tuha baassassa? amhehiṁ labaṅga-ladiāṇaṁ jjeba kusumāiṁ āharīanti | [yady evaṁ tathāpi vayaṁ nāparādhyāmaḥ, sakalā eva latā mama priya-sakhīnām akṣarāṅkitās tena khalu latāsu ko’dhikāras tava vayasyasya? asmābhir lavaṅga-latikānām eva kusumāni āhriyante |]

Translation: Lalitā: Even if that is so, we have not done any offense. All the vines are stamped with the letters of my dear friend’s name. How is your friend adhikāri of the vines? We have picked flowers only from the lavaṅga vines.

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.165

jaratī: lalide! ṇimmañchaṇaṁ de jāmi, bhaddaṁ jjeba bhaṇidaṁ | kaṇhaḍa, kīsa kalahāesi attaṇo ahiāre ciṭṭhantīhiṁ edāhiṁ saddhaṁ, maggasi ja[i], tado magga, mae jjeba dādabbāṇi labaṅga-kusumāiṁ tumaṁ kassa ṇa pio hohi? [lalite! nirmañchanaṁ te yāmi, bhadraṁ eva bhaṇitaṁ | kṛṣna, kasmāt kalahāyase ātmano’dhikāre tiṣṭhantībhir etābhiḥ sārdhaṁ, mārgayasi yadi, tadā mārgaya, mayaiva dātavyāni lavaṅga-kusumāni tvaṁ kasya na priyo bhavasi?]

Translation: Jaratī: Lalitā, I perform āratī to you. You have spoken well. Kṛṣṇa, why do You quarrel with these girls who have established their proprietorship? If You want the flowers, ask for them. I will give the lavaṅga flowers to You. To whom are You not dear? (Who does not love You? i.e., everyone loves You)

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.166

śrī-rādhā (sa-spṛham ātma-gataṁ kṛṣṇam uddiśya saṁskṛtena):

śyāmīkaroti bhuvanaṁ vapuṣā dig-antān
pūrṇendu-maṇḍala-mayī kurute mukhena
vācā sudhā-rasa-bhṛto vidadhāti karṇān
dṛṣṭyā nabho’mbuja-mayī kurute kim etat

Translation: Śrī Rādhā: (eagerly says to Herself these words in Sanskrit about Kṛṣṇa) What is this thing, that makes the world black by the body, fills the directions with the rays of the full moon, fills the ears with nectar by the words, and fills the sky with lotuses by the glance?

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.167

jaratī: kaṇhaḍa! ṇehi kusumāiṁ | [kṛṣṇa! naya kusumāni |]

Translation: Jaratī: Kṛṣṇa, take these flowers.

(iti tāsām añcalataḥ kusumāny ādāya kṛṣṇopakaṇṭhaṁ vikirati |)

(She takes the flowers from the end of the girls’ saris and scatters them before Kṛṣṇa.)

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.168

śrī-rādhā (añcalena mukham āvṛtya kiñcit smitvā): ajjie kiṁ kidaṁ? dea-pūaṇa-kide abacidāsasa kusumassa īrisī abatthā kidā? [āryayā kiṁ kṛtaṁ? deva-pūjana-kṛte’vacitasya kusumasya īdṛśī avasthā kṛtā?]

Translation: Śrī Rādhā: (covering Her face with the edge of Her sari, She smiles slightly). Noble lady, what have you done? Such a state as this has been done to the flowers that were picked to worship the Lord.

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.169

śrī-kṛṣṇaḥ (rādhāṁ nirvarṇya sva-gataṁ): aho’tiramyatvaṁ vartate vasanāvṛta-mukhāyāḥ |

Translation: Śrī Kṛṣṇa: (while looking at Rādhā, says to Himself these words) Ah! She is very beautiful covering her face with the sari.

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.170

añjanī mṛga-dṛśo dṛg-añcalaḥ
pañjarastha iva bhāti khañjanaḥ
leśa eṣa hasitasya dṛśyate
vastra-pūta iva candramo dravaḥ

Translation: This doe-eyed girl’s mascara-decorated sidelong glance shines gloriously like a restless khañjana bird in a cage. The little-drop of her smile is seen like a stream of moon covered by a cloth.

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.171

lalitā: ajje! adibhaāulāsi tumaṁ | kiṁ tti cira-parissameṇa abacidaṁ kusumaṁ ṇaṭṭhīkidaṁ? ko eso imassa bundābaṇassa? [ārye! atibhayākulāsi tvaṁ | kim iti cira-pariśrameṇa avacitaṁ kusumaṁ naṣṭīkṛtaṁ? ka eṣo’sya vṛndāvanasya?]

Translation: Lalitā: (to Jaratī) Noble lady, you are greatly afraid. For what reason you have ruined the flowers we picked with great labor? What is He to Vṛndāvana forest?

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.172

jaratī: lalide, samatthāsi tumaṁ kalahaṁ kāduṁ | alīa-gabba-bhara-kaṇḍūlaṁ de hiaaṁ, tā kuṇha edehiṁ dhiṭṭhehiṁ saha kalahaṁ, ehi ṇattiṇi ehi | [lalite, samarthāsi tvaṁ kalahaṁ kartuṁ | alīka-garva-bhara-kaṇḍūlaṁ te hṛdayaṁ, tasmāt kuru etair dhṛṣṭaiḥ saha kalahaṁ, ehi naptri ehi |] (iti rādhām ādāya gantuṁ pravṛttaḥ |)

Translation: Jaratī: Lalitā, you are capable of quarrelling. You heart is filled with itching false pride. Therefore, you quarrel with the fraudulent and mischievous hero. Come, granddaughter. Come. (Taking Rādhā, she is about to leave).

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.173

śrī-rādhā: ajje! kahiṁ gantabbaṁ? gobīsaro ṇa accidabbo? [ārye! kva gantavyaṁ? gopīśvaro na arcitavyaḥ?]

Translation: Śrī Rādhā: Noble lady, where are we going? We have not yet worshipped Gopīśvara (Lord Śiva).

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.174

kusumāsavaḥ: ajje! ettha baassassa dāṇaṁ baṭṭadi | kusuma-coriaṁ tuha muhaṁ daṭṭhuṇa samatthidaṁ, dāṇaṁ dāuṇa sabbāo gacchantu | [ārye! atra vayasyasya dānaṁ vartate | kusuma-cauryaṁ tava mukhaṁ dṛṣṭā samarthitaṁ, dānaṁ dattvā sarvā gacchantu |]

Translation: Kusumāsava: Noble lady, there is a fine (toll tax) you must pay to my friend. Your prime role is ascertained in stealing the flowers. Pay your fine (toll tax) and you may all go.

Jayapatākā Swami: So here, the pastimes between Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa are being displayed. Kṛṣṇa is very much attracted to Rādhārāṇī, and Rādhā is very attracted to Kṛṣṇa. But Lalitā is defending her mistress Rādhā, by various tactics. And Jaratī, the grandmother, is making all the things very spicy, very wonderful. So somehow, the drama is unfolding, and now Kusumāsava is saying that they have to pay a fine. Previously Lalitā asked who is Kṛṣṇa? And Kusumāsava said, He is the adhikāri. Adhikāri means the authority. But Lalitā divided the word up, adhika and ari – great enemy! So, like this, she is saying Kṛṣṇa is the great enemy of the forest. So Kusumāsava, he is very smart. He said, to Lalitā, you are very smart, but you have committed aparādhā. She said no, it is aparādhā. We are not aparādhā, apa means no, no rādhā, we are sārādhā, we are with Rādhā, that is not aparādhā. Like this. Jaratī is saying that Lalitā, “You are very expert at arguing. So, like this, very interesting pastimes.”

Translation: The cowherd boy known as Kusumāsava in kṛṣṇa-līlā later became Kolaveca Śrīdhara during Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s līlā at Navadvipa.

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.175

jaratī: are bahmaṇa-baḍua! kiṁ re dāṇaṁ? [are brāhmaṇa-baṭuka! kiṁ re dānam?]

Translation: Jaratī: Are! Brāhmaṇa child, what is this “fine”(toll tax)?

kusumāsavaḥ: baassa suala, bhaṇīadu | [vayasya subala, bhaṇyatām |]

Kusumāsava: Friend Subala, tell her.

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.176

subalaḥ: ārye, śrūyatām—

yogyaṁ matvā smara-narapatiḥ paśya dattvā prasūnaṁ
vṛndāraṇye nava-kula-vadhū-vṛnda-ghaṭṭādhipatye
yatnād asthāpayad ayam imaṁ mad-vayasyaṁ yaśasāṁ
dattvā śulkaṁ vrajata sudṛśo māstu śulko vivādam ||

Translation: Subala: Noble lady, please hear. Look, thinking him a suitable person, King Kāmadeva gave the flowers in Vṛndāvana forest to my glorious friend and appointed him as the superintendent to collect customs duties from the pious girls here. O beautiful-eyed girls, pay the fine and go. Don’t do this dry arguing.

(give śulka (fine) not śuṣka (dry) vāda)

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.177

jaratī: hodu de baasso dāṇī, amhāṇaṁ kiṁ teṇa sumara-ṇaraba{i}ṇo basāo ṇa amhe | [bhavatu te vayasyo dānī, asmākaṁ kiṁ tena smara-narapater vaśā na vayam |]

Translation: Jaratī: So be it that Your friend is superintendent to collect taxes. What has it got to do with us? We are not subdued by King Kāmadeva.

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.178

kusumāsava: hoi, buḍḍhiāe tuha kahiṁ tassa ahīṇadā? [bhavati, vṛddhāyās tava kutra tasyādhīnatā?]

Translation: Kusumāsava: You being an old lady, how can you be subservient him?

jaratī (sa-krodhaṁ): are dāṇa-jogga-paattho ja{i} hoi tado saṅkā karīadi | [are dāna-yogya-padārtho yadi bhavati tataḥ śaṅkā kriyate |]

Jaratī: (angrily) Are! If there is a man fit to accept the tax, then there is fear?

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.179

subalaḥ: priya-vayasya! svayam asyottaraṁ dīyatām |

Translation: Subala: Dear friend, please give the answer Yourself.

śrī-kṛṣṇaḥ (sa-gāmbhīryaṁ):

hanta bho! śrūyatām—

Śrī Kṛṣṇa: (with gravity) Come on girls! Listen.

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.180

ratnādyaṁ vaḥ kuvalaya-dṛśām astu vā nāstu vastu
preṅkhole’smin bhuja-latikayor bhāga-dheyo vidheyaḥ
maryādeyaṁ mama nigaditā kintu kintu ratnāny apīmāny
ānīyante puraṭa-puṭikām antarā darśayadhvam

Translation: You lotus-eyed girls may or may not have many jewels and other valuables (to pay as tax). In this Vṛndāvana, the swinging vines of your arms that use to collect the flowers are the taxes. That is the fine ascertained (by Kāmadeva). But, show me the jewels and other valuables that are collected in these bags.

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.181

sakhyaḥ: pūobakaraṇassa pūḍiā iaṁ gobīsarassa | [pūjopakaraṇasya pūṭikeyaṁ gopīśvarasya |]

Her Friends: These bags hold articles for the worship of Gopīśvara (Lord Śiva).

kusumāsavaḥ: are, mukkhā aaṁ jjeba gobīsaro imaṁ jjeba puedha | [are, mūrkhāḥ! ayam eva gopīśvara imam eva pūjayadhvam |]

Translation: Kusumāsava: Are Foolish girls! He (Kṛṣṇa) indeed is Gopīśvara. Worship Him.

Jayapatākā Swami: So Kṛṣṇa is the source of all the devas. Gopīśvara is a form of Lord Siva in Vṛndāvana. In every dhāma, the dhāma is protected by Lord Śiva. In Vṛndāvana He is known as Gopīśvara, in Māyāpur He is known as Vṛddha Śiva, He is the protector of the dhāma.

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.182

sakhyaḥ: are mahāālo gobīsaro | [are mahā-kālo gopīśvaraḥ |]

Translation: Her Friends: Gopīśvara (Lord Śiva) is Mahākāla (densely dark).

kusumāsavaḥ: are mahāālo kiṁ ṇa hodi, jassa ruipaḍalehiṁ sabbaṁ jjeba baṇaṁ tamāla-baṇṇaṁ kidaṁ? | [ are mahā-kālo kiṁ ṇa bhavati, yasya ruci-paṭalaiḥ sarvam eva vanaṁ tamāla-varṇaṁ kṛtam? |]

Kusumāsava: Is He not Mahākāla (densely dark)? By His splendor the entire forest is made black as a tamāla tree?

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.183

sakhyaḥ: candāsaeharo jjeba accidabbo | [candraśekhara evārcitavyaḥ |]

Translation: Her friends: We worship the one who has the moon as decoration on his head.

kusumāsavaḥ: pekkha pekkha! esa candaaseharo ṇa hoi | [paśya paśya, eṣa candraśekharo na bhavati | ]

Kusumāsava: Look! Look! Is he not Candraśekhara?

(iti barhāvataṁsaṁ darśayati |)

(He points to Kṛṣṇa’s peacock feather, the moon in His crown).

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.184

sakhyaḥ: bāāla, gorīpatiṁ pua{i}ssamha | [ vācāla, gaurīpatiṁ pūjayiṣyāmaḥ |]

Translation: Her friends: Talkative boy, we worship Gauripatī (the husband of the fair goddess Gauri).

kusumāsavaḥ: tumhe gorīoṇa bhavadha? [ yūyaṁ gauryo na bhavatha? ]

Kusumāsava: Are all of you not gaurī (one with fair-complexion)?

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.185

jaratī: are baḍuā edāṇaṁ pa[i] tuha baasso tti tumaṁ jāṇesi | ciṭṭha ciṭṭha | gāma-majjhe tuha daṁsaṇaṁ ṇa lambhissaṁ? [are baṭuka, etāsāṁ patis tava vayasya iti tvaṁ jānāsi | tiṣṭha tiṣṭha, grāma-madhye tava darśanaṁ na lapsye?]

Translation: Jaratī: Child, you know your friend to be the husband of these girls? Wait! Wait! will I not see you in the village (If you happen to come to the village, I will give proper reply to you by punishing you)?

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.186

sakhyaḥ: are bāāla, pasuba[i] pūidabbo | [are vācāla, paśupatiḥ pūjayitavyaḥ |]

Translation: Her friends: Talkative fool, we worship Paśupati (Lord of the animals who protects them).

kusumāsavaḥ: hanta bho ettiāo dheṇuo jo pāledi, sa kiṁ pasuba{i} ṇa hoi? [hanta bho etā dhenūr yaḥ pālayati, sa kiṁ paśupatir na bhavati?]

Kusumāsava: He protects and maintains all of these cows. Is He not Paśupati?

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.187

sakhyaḥ: evvaṁ bhaṇadha, jassa ede amhe pasuo, so kiṁ pasuba{i} ṇa hoi? [evaṁ bhaṇata, yasya ete vayaṁ paśavaḥ, sa kiṁ paśupatir na bhavati?]

Translation: Her Friends: Rather you say, “Since we (the sakhas) are His paśus (animals), is He then not Paśupati?”

Jayapatākā Swami: Rādhārāṇī’s friends are calling the cowherd boys as animals. Therefore, Kṛṣṇa is Paśupati.

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.188

subalaḥ: bhavatu, vayaṁ sarve eva paśavaḥ | tena bhavan-mate ayam eva paśupatiḥ | tadāyam evārcyatām

Subala: So be it. We are all animals. Because, as per your opinion, He is Paśupati, then you should worship Him.

kiṁ ca, puṭikābhiḥ kṛtvā kiṁ nīyate | tad darśayitvā sukhaṁ gamyatām | kim anena śuṣka-kalahena?

Translation: Furthermore, after showing what you carry in these bags, you may go in happiness. What is the use of useless quarrel?

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.189

rādhikā: bho sakhīo! daṁsedha daṁsedha! [bhoḥ sakhyaḥ! darśayata darśayata |]

Rādhikā: Friends, show it.

(sakhyas tathā kurvanti |)

(Her friends do that.)

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.190

kusumāsavaḥ (vilokya): aaṁ miamao, edaṁ kuṅkumaṁ, edaṁ kālāguruaṁ, edaṁ candaṇaṁ, aaṁ kappuro, aaṁ mottāhāro sippakosaleṇa phaṇihāro bba kido | [ayaṁ mṛgamadaḥ, etat kuṅkumaṁ, etat kālāgurukaṁ, etat candanaṁ, ayaṁ karpūraḥ, ayaṁ muktāhāraḥ | śilpa-kauśalena phaṇihāra iva kṛtaḥ]

Translation: Kusumāsava: (looking) This is musk. This is kuṅkuma. This is black aguru. This is sandal paste. This is camphor. This is pearl necklace, artistically made in the shape of a snake.

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.191

jaratī: are, phaṇihārā imaṁ baḍuaṁ ḍaṁsedha | [ are, phaṇihārāḥ! imaṁ baṭukaṁ daṁśatha |]

Translation: Jaratī: Snake, bite this boy!

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.192

kusumāsavaḥ: ajjie kālia-maddaṇa-sahaarassa me kudo phaṇihārado bhaaṁ, tā edāṇaṁ karaṁ dāuṇa gacchadha | [ ārye kāliya-mardana-sahacarasya me kutaḥ phaṇi-hārato bhayaṁ, tasmād eteṣāṁ karaṁ dattvā gacchata |]

Translation: Kusumāsava: Noble lady, why would my friend, the subduer of Kāliya, fear any snake? Therefore, pay him the fine (toll tax) and go.

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.193

sakhyaḥ: hodu, hodu | amhe dea-pūaṁ kadua gharaṁ gacchamha, tado tuha baasso tattha ja{i} gacchadi, tadā jaṁ sakkīadi, taṁ jjeba dādabbaṁ | [ bhavatu bhavatu | vayaṁ deva-pūjāṁ kṛtvā gṛhaṁ gacchāmaḥ | tatas tava vayasyas tatra yadi gacchati, tadā yat śakyate, tad eva dātavyam | ]

Translation: Her Friends: So be it. We will worship the Lord and then go home. If your friend comes there, then we will give what we are able to give.

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.194

kusumāsavaḥ: are dāsīe dhīdā appaṇo ahiārappadesaṁ muñcia tumha gharaṁ gadua maggissadi me baasso, tā ciṭṭhadha ciṭṭhadha! [are dāyā duhitaraḥ! ātmano’dhikāra-pradeśaṁ muktvā tava gṛhaṁ gatvā mārgayiṣyati me vayasyaḥ | tasmāt tiṣṭhata tiṣṭhata!]

Translation: Kusumāsava: Are! Daughters of servants! Must my friend leave His privileged region, go to your home, and beg from you? Just wait! Just wait!

(iti pūjopakaraṇāny ādātum icchati |)

(He is about to seize the paraphernalia of worship).

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.195

lalitā: ae goba-rāa-ṇandaṇa! deva-ddabbāṇi edāṇi, ebbaṁ apabittāṇi kāduṁ ṇa jujjianti | [aye gopa-rāja-nandana! deva-dravyāṇi etāṇi, evaṁ apavitrāṇi kartuṁ na yujyante |]

Translation: Lalitā: Are! The son of a cowherd-king! The paraphernalia for worshipping the deity should not be contaminated.

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.196

rādhā: lalide! imiṇā pphaṁsidāṇi edāṇi kadhaṁ debassa dādabbāṇi? tā muñcehi muñcehi | gharaṁ gadua aṇṇobaaraṇaṁ āṇia deo accidabbo | tā ajjie, ehi gharaṁ gacchamha | [lalite! anena spṛṣṭāny etāni kathaṁ devasya dātavyāni? tasmāt muñca muñca | gṛhaṁ gatvā anyopakaraṇaṁ ānīya devo’rcitavyaḥ | tasmāt ārye, ehi gṛhaṁ gacchāmahe |]

Translation: Rādhā: Lalitā, how can we offer to the deity what He has touched? Therefore, Give it up! Give it up! We will go home and bring other things to worship the deity. So, noble lady, come. Let us go home.

(iti gantum icchati |)

(She desires to leave).

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.197

kṛṣṇaḥ (panthānam ākramya): ayi caturaṁ manye, kva yāsi?

Kṛṣṇa: (blocking the path) Ah, You who think Yourself so clever, where are You going?

rādhā (sāvahitthāmarṣam): mūlaṁ jjeba diṇṇaṁ, kiṁ tassa dāṇaṁ maggasi? [mūlam eva dattaṁ, kiṁ tasya dānaṁ mṛgayasi? ]

Translation: Rādhā: (feigning anger) The fine is paid. What fine more do You want?

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.198

kṛṣṇaḥ (sahāsāmarṣam): kim mūlam dattamasti mūlantvetadeva śrūyatām

Translation: Kṛṣṇa: (laughing and angry) What payment have You made? This is the price. Listen.

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.199

etat svarṇa-saroruhaṁ tad-upari śrī-nīla-nīlotpale
tat-paścāt kuruvinakandala-puṭe tatrāpi muktāvalī |
sarvaṁ dṛśyata eva kintu nibhṛtā yā hema-kumbha-dvayī
kiṁ vānyan nayase’nayeti tad idaṁ bāle vicāryaṁ mama

Translation: Oh, innocent girl! This golden lotus (face), a pair of blue sapphire-coloured water-lilly (two eyes) situated on this golden lotus. Below the water lillies is a slit of kuruvinda-kandala (a white-flower plant) which holds strands of pearls (lips and teeth). All these are seen. But I have to see what else you are secretly carrying in the two golden ewer (breasts).

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.200

rādhā: ko tumaṁ biārassa? ṇahi aviāreṇa viāro kāduṁ sakkiadi | [kas tvaṁ vicārasya? na hy avicāreṇa vicāraḥ kartuṁ śakyate |]

Translation: Rādhā: Who are you to judge (see)? You cannot judge (see) for want of discrimination. One is not able to judge without having the sense of judgement!

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.201

jaratī (dvayor madhyam adhyāsya saṁskṛtena): are yaśodā-mātar mā tarao bhava, lobhavatā hṛdayena katham ācarasi durvinītatvam | tattvaṁ te kathayāmi | yadi nirākula-kula-vadhūpadrava-drava-kathā kriyate, tadā na tena te bhadraṁ bhaviṣyati |

Translation: Jaratī: (placing herself between Them, she says in Sanskrit) Son of Yaśodā, don’t be fickle! Why do You behave undisciplined (kidnaping another’s wife) with a greedy heart? I tell You the truth. If You fearlessly create gossip about these pious girls’ molestation, then by this gossip there will be no good fortune for You.

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.202

lalitā (sa-krodhāma upasṛtya saṁskṛtena):

kas tvaṁ bho

Translation: Lalitā: (approaching Kṛṣṇa, she angrily says in Sanskrit) Who are You mister?

nanu mādhavaḥ

Kṛṣṇa: I am Mādhava (+dhava=Lakṣmī’s husband).

katham aho vaiśākha ākāravān

Lalitā: Oh! Are you the month of Vaiśākha (Mādhava) personified?

mugdhe viddhi janārdano’smi

Kṛṣṇa: O foolish girl, know that I am Janārdana (O maintainer of all living entities as Nārāyaṇa by being the chastiser of the enemies).

tad idaṁ brūte vanāvasthitiḥ |

Lalitā: That you are Janārdana (jana+ardana=inflicts suffering on people) explains why You live in the forest.

Jayapatākā Swami: Whatever Lord Kṛṣṇa says, Lalitā by dividing the word up in a particular way, gives opposite meaning, and with that she is defeating Kṛṣṇa in arguing.

māṁ govardhana-dhāriṇaṁ na dharaṇau vetti

Translation: Kṛṣṇa: Who in the world does not know Me as Govardhana-dhāri?

huṁ vardhanaṁ

hiṁsā he vṛṣahan bibharṣi tad-agha-dvāraiva govardhanam ||

Lalitā: Huṁ (Acceptance that He is Govardhana-dhāri) Oh killer of Vṛṣāsura. You hold (dhāri) Govardhana because of the sin of killing the bull (go), for vardhanam is hiṁsā (violence).

Jayapatākā Swami: go+vardhanam, he said Govardhana-dhāri, go is cow and vardhanam is violence. Lalitā again accepts that He is Govardhana-dhāri, she divides the word go - cow and vardhanam is that Kṛṣṇa is guilty of killing the bull.

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.203

prema-bhaktiḥ: aho kautūhalam
yūyaṁ naṭair apy abhinīyamānā
līlā harer eti rasāyanatvam
sā yat svakīyaiḥ svayam īśvareṇā-

bhinīyate tat kim udāharāmaḥ ||

Translation: Prema Bhakti: Oh Entertainment! Even though Lord Hari’s pastimes are portrayed by actors, it produces unlimited happiness. What can we say when they are portrayed by the Lord Himself and His personal associates? Furthermore,

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.204

api ca—

sāmājikānāṁ hi raso naṭānāṁ
naivaiti panthāḥ kṛtiṣu prasiddhāḥ
hatobhayatve rasa-vittvam eṣām
alaukike vastuni ko virodhaḥ

Translation: It is well known custom among the learned that the refined spectators derive a certain happiness from the drama, but not the actors. However, here, where both actors and audience are related to the pastimes of the Lord, what obstacle stands in their way? Moreover,

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.205

api ca—

alaukikāl laukikam eva śaurer
vṛttaṁ camatkāri tad eva līlā
ākarṣakatvaṁ hi jagaj-janānām
alaukikatvasya sa ko’pi hetuḥ

Translation: Lord Kṛṣṇa’s activities in the material world are more attractive than His activities in the spiritual world because that is His līlā (pastime). The uncommon attracts the people of the material world and that is the proof that they (Lord Kṛṣṇa’s activities in the material world) are actually beyond the touch of matter.

Jayapatākā Swami: Prema Bhakti is giving the actual purport of Kṛṣṇa’s pastimes, in the material world. That here His pastimes are fully transcendental, and that by remembering, or describing, or seeing His pastimes, one feels unlimited spiritual happiness. Normally, the audience would feel pleasure seeing a drama, more than the actors. But in this case, since the actors are devotees, actors are the Lord Himself, and the devotees are the audience, everyone is experiencing spiritual bliss by remembering the pastimes of Kṛṣṇa.

(iti sa-vismayam ālokayati |)

(Filled with wonder, she looks).

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.206

kusumāsavaḥ: āḥ, kuḍile durviṇīde lalide, maha baasso duṭṭhāāro kido, tā ciṭṭha ciṭṭha | [ āḥ, kuṭile durvinīte lalite, mama vayasyo duṣṭācāraḥ kṛtaḥ, tasmāt tiṣṭha tiṣṭha |]

Translation: Kusumāsava: Wicked, crooked, Lalitā! You vilified the deeds of my fried. Therefore, Stand! Stand and fight!

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.207

subalaḥ (sa-parihāsāmarṣam): hanta bhoḥ! satyam etat
vaktraṁ vo dvija-rāja-hiṁsi madirā-lole dṛśau rociṣā
mūrtiḥ kāñcana-hāriṇī na viramo gurv-aṅganā-saṅgataḥ
saṅgī pañcama eṣa pañca-viśikhaḥ śuddhis tathāpi ha vo
yan nāmāpy akhilāghanāśi sa paraṁ duṣṭo’smadīyaḥ sakhā

Translation: Subala: (joking and angry) Dear friend! This is true. Your faces do violence to dvija-rāja (viloence to divja-rāja - your faces defeats, the beauty of the moon (dvija-rāja). Your eyes restless in intoxication. You steal gold by your splendor (Your complexion is more splendid than gold). You do not stop associating with exalted ladies (your have exceptional qualities that is praiseworthy). Your pañcama-svara (the 5th (later 7th) note the gamut (supposed to be produced by the air drawn from 5 parts of the body) i.e., sweet voices have distracted my friend due to your lust. Nevertheless, you are purified (you are not made impure due to my friend molesting you). Our Friend Kṛṣṇa, even the holy name Who destroys all sins, has become great debauchee in your estimation (What a wonder).

Jayapatākā Swami: Subala is at the same time apparently chastising Rādhā, but he is praising Her.

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.208

tad vayasya, ghaṭṭa-pālā hi vinā dhṛṣṭāprakaṭanena svārtha-kuśalaṁ na bhavanti, tad ātmanaḥ prakaṭaya śauṭīryam |

Translation: Therefore friend, collectors of customs duties who are not bold are not successful. Therefore, show Your power.

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.209

(kṛṣṇo’ntarvartinībhūya rādhāṁ pṛṣṭhataḥ kṛtvā sthitavatīṁ jaratīṁ kareṇa nikṣipya balāt rādhā-paṭāntar-grahaṇam abhinayati | jaratī balān mocayitvā rādhā antardhāpayantī svayam apy antardadhāti | nityānandaṁ svarūpeṇa sthito nṛtyati |)

Translation: (Placing Himself between them, He turns His back to Rādhā, with His hand pushes Jaratī, who is standing in front of Him, and tries forcibly to grasp the end of Rādhā’s sari. Jaratī, freeing Rādhā by force, makes Her disappear and then also disappears herself. Lord Nityānanda becomes manifest, dancing).

Translation: Lord Nityānanda is playing the part of Jaratī, Rādhārāṇī’s grandmother, and He also plays the part of Yogamāyā. Yogamāyā disappears.

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.210

maitrī: dei! kiṁ ṇvidaṁ? kudo aaṁ aamhādo ṇiccāṇando? kahiṁ gadā sā jaradī? [devi! kiṁ nv idam? kuto’yam akasmān nityānandaḥ? kuto gatā sā jaratī?]

Translation: Maitrī: Goddess, what is this? From where has Lord Nityānanda suddenly appear? Where has Jaratī gone?

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.211

prema-bhaktiḥ: ayaṁ khalu yogamāyā-prabhāvaḥ | svayam asminn āviśya jaratī bhūtvā samprati rasaḥ saviśeṣa eva suraso bhavatīti yathā-samayam antarhitāsua | ataḥ svarūpeṇāvatiṣṭhate’yaṁ nityānandaḥ|

Translation: Prema Bhakti: This is the power of Yogamāyā. Entering Nityānanda, she became Jaratī, and being satisfied that this incomplete mellow has matured sweet enough, has disappeared. Now Nityānanda is present in His own form.

Jayapatākā Swami: For one minute, Lord Nityānanda was an old lady, Jaratī, and one minute Jaratī disappeared, and He became Lord Nityānanda, So this is the power of Yogamāyā.

yataḥ—

Since it is stated:

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.212

svato balīyān sahajo hi bhāvaḥ
sa kṛtrimaḥ bhāvam adhaḥ karoti
agnyātapābhyāṁ janito jalānāṁ
naivoṣṇa-bhāvaś cira-kāla-vartī

Translation: When the natural condition becomes strongest by being itself, then it drops its unnatural condition. Water warmed by fire or the sun does not stay warm for long. (Thus the artificial mood of Nityānanda as Yogamāyā has disappeared and He has appeared again in His original form as Nityānanda)

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.213

tad idānīm etāvataiva sthitaṁ nāṭyaṁ | bhavati hi īśvara-līlaiveyaṁ, na khalu naṭa-rītiḥ | paśyādvaito’dvaita eva |

Translation: Now the play ends. That is the Lord’s pastime. It does not follow the ordinary rules of drama. Look. Advaita is Advaita Himself.

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.214

maitrī: ṇa jāṇe dāṇīṁ bhaavaṁ kīriso hoi | [na jāne idānīṁ bhagavān kīdṛśo bhavati |]

Translation: Maitrī: I don’t how the Lord has become now?

nepathye: bho bho sannyāsī sannyāsī |

A Voice from Behind the Scenes: Ho! Hallo! A sannyāsī! A sannyāsī!

Caitanya candrodaya nāṭaka 3.215

prema-bhaktiḥ: aho kim ayam ākasmikī pratikulā vāk | nirūpayāmi |

Translation: Prema Bhakti: Ah, what are these unexpected contrary (opposed to gṛhastha) words? I will look.

(iti nirūpya)

(So she looks)

aye bhagavad-vāṭīṁ kaścit sannyāsī praviśati | tam ālokya kaścid ākrośati | tad ehi sahaiva niṣkramāvaḥ |

Translation: A sannyāsī enters the Lord’s (Gaurāṅga bhavana) house. Beholding him, someone laments loudly. So, come. Let us go together.

(iti niṣkrānte)

They both exit.

(iti niṣkrāntāḥ sarve |)

Thus, everyone exits.

iti śrī-śrī-caitanya-candrodaye dāna-vinodo nāma tṛtīyo’ṅkaḥ

Thus, ends dāna-vinoda, the third act of śrī-śrī-caitanya-candrodaya nāṭaka

Jayapatākā Swami: So somehow the Lord is enjoying this drama. And He is displaying the pastime of Kṛṣṇa collecting tax. And somehow, the different people are playing the different roles. And at the end of the drama, they all immediately resume their own form. And then Kṛṣṇa became Advaita, Jaratī became Nityānanda. Normally, it takes a long time to dress up, and to put on appropriate make up and costume. But here in the drama, actors immediately change their form, and they became who they normally were. Jaratī became Nityānanda, Kṛṣṇa became Advaita, and Rādhā became Gaurāṅga. Haribol!

Thus, ends the chapter, The Pleasing Sport of Collecting Toll Taxes

Are there any questions?

Question: Guru Mahārāja I have a question. In the beginning of this chapter we heard that Mahāprabhu is going to play the part of Lakṣmī. Then here, as the drama goes on, we see that He is playing the role of Rādhārāṇī. So how to harmonize this difference?

Jayapatākā Swami: Different books, describe the pastime with different words. This Caitanya-candrodaya-nāṭaka, describes the pastime as Lord Caitanya in the role of Rādhārāṇī, and Lakṣmī is also a name of Rādhā. But here we see more details of the drama by this Candrodaya-nāṭaka. So here we get the detail that Lord Caitanya appeared as Rādhā. But in some of our books, they say that Lord Caitanya appeared as the goddess of fortune. But they don’t give any details. So, that is why this book is a synthesis of all the different books, that’s why we are trying to combine different books that describe different pastimes. And sometimes one book describes one pastime, and sometimes another book describes another pastime. Sometimes various books describe the same pastime, they give slightly different details. So that is the situation of the Caitanya-līlās. They all have a common theme that there was a drama in Candraśekhara’s house, but some details may be different.

Question: Beloved Guru Mahārāja, please accept my respectful obeisances. Śrīla Prabhupāda kī jaya! Guru Mahārāja, can you clarify to us if the Candraśekhara in whose house this amazing drama is going on, is the same Candraśekhara of Vārāṇasī, where Mahāprabhu stayed?

Jayapatākā Swami: I don’t think it is the same one. Because this Candraśekhara is called as Māmā Ṭhākura. He is the uncle of Lord Caitanya. But the person in Benaras was not the uncle of Lord Caitanya, as far as I understand.

Question: Hare Kṛṣṇa Śrīla Guru Mahārāja! Please accept my respectful obeisances. All glories to Śrīla Prabhupāda, Your divine grace has mentioned several times to pray to Pañca-tattva before starting our chanting. Please could you advise what is the best prayer? Thank you Guru Mahārāja.

Jayapatākā Swami: Normally before chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa we say the Pañca-tattva mantra. Śrī-kṛṣṇa-caitanya prabhu-nityānanda śrī advaita gadadhara śrīvāsādi gaura-bhakta-vṛṇda! That mantra was specifically given to us by Siddha Jagannātha dāsa bābā. There are many versions of the Pañca-tattva, mentioned in the Caitanya-caritāmṛta. But this version made by Siddha Jagannātha dāsa bābājī is the one that we chant. Amala Mañjarī devī dāsī, did you attend the UK virtual Ratha-yātrā, which I was asked to speak at.

Question: Hare Kṛṣṇa Guru Mahārāja! Please accept my respectful obeisances. How to accept every decision of guru and Gaurāṅga?

Jayapatākā Swami: How to accept every decision of guru and Gaurāṅga? Like if you fly an airplane, there are different levels of license. One is, you can only fly in the daylight, beneath the clouds. And the other kind is that you can fly in the cloud, but you cannot see, it will depend on your instruments. Even your senses tell you, you are upside down, some misinformation. But you follow the instruments. So that’s the higher level of license for flying the planes. So, we accept the decisions of guru and Gaurāṅga because we do not depend on the decision of our senses. Our senses and mind may mislead us. But guru and Gaurāṅga will not mislead us. So, we should not accept a guru, if we do not believe him. Hare Kṛṣṇa!

Now we would like to have Mahā Varāha Prabhu give his message to you.

Hare Kṛṣṇa! Gaurāṅga!
