The comparison of Śrī Gaurasundara with Mukunda and Nityānanda with Ananta, who acts as the bed of Lord Viṣṇu in the ocean of milk, is illustrated in the example of Gaura-Nityānanda's floating in the waters of the Ganges.

Jayapatākā Swami: The two Lords were floating in the waves of the Ganges, like Anantadeva and Mukunda in the ocean of milk. So, just as Anantadeva was the bed of Viṣṇu, and Viṣṇu was floating in the ocean of milk, so similar comparison was made of Nitāi-Gaura, floating in the Ganges.

dekhaye, advaita dole jñānānanda-raṅge

Translation: Accompanied by Nityānanda, the angry Viśvambhara saw Advaita rocking back and forth in the happiness of jñāna.

Śrī Advaita Prabhu desired to achieve abundant mercy in the form of chastisement from Śrī Gaurasundara, so He rocked back and forth out of respect for Māyāvāda, which is averse to devotional service. Therefore, on arriving there with Nityānanda, Mahāprabhu displayed anger towards those envious of devotional service.

Jayapatākā Swami: Accompanied by Lord Nityānanda, Viśvambhara, in an angry mood, arrived at the house of Advaita. He saw Advaita rocking back and forth in the happiness of jñāna, of impersonal knowledge. So Advaita Ācārya, He wanted to receive the mercy of being punished or chastised by Sri Gaurasundara. So, He rocked back and forth out of respect for Māyāvāda, which is averse to devotional service. So, after arriving at Advaita Ācārya’s house, Mahāprabhu accompanied by Nityānanda, displayed anger at those, envious of devotional service.

Jayapatākā Swami: Seeing Lord Caitanya, Haridāsa Ṭhākura offered his prostrate obeisances. Acyutānanda the son of Advaita, also offered his obeisances. At that time Haridāsa Ṭhākura was staying at the house of Advaita in Śāntipura. So, when Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu arrived there, both Haridāsa Ṭhākura and Acyutānanda, the son of Advaita offered their obeisances.

Translation: The wives of Advaita offered their obeisances to the Lord within their minds. They were filled with anxiety on seeing the Lord's mood.

According to worldly etiquette the two wives of Advaita did not externally offer obeisances to Mahāprabhu, but they internally accepted subordination to Him by giving up false ego.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, the wives of Advaita Ācārya, mentally offered their obeisances to the Lord. They were filled with anxiety, seeing the mood of the Lord. Since Advaita was the spiritual uncle of Lord Caitanya, following some worldly etiquette, the two wives of Advaita did not externally offer their obeisances to Caitanya Mahāprabhu, but they internally offered their respects and accepted subordination to Him, giving up all false ego.

Jayapatākā Swami: So in an angry mood the Lord said, “O Nāḍā, tell Me, what is superior, jñāna-yoga or bhakti-yoga?”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.132

advaita balaye,—“sarva-kāla baḍa `jñāna'
yāra nāhi jñāna, tā'ra bhaktite ki kāma?”

Translation: Advaita replied, “Jñāna is always superior. What is the use of devotional service for one who does not have jñāna?”

On being asked by Mahāprabhu to ascertain the difference between jñāna and bhakti, Advaita informed Him that jñāna was superior to bhakti. He also informed Him that for a person on the path of jñāna there was no need to remain on the path of devotional service.

Jayapatākā Swami: Advaita replied, “jñāna is always superior! Ha! Ha! If one does not have knowledge, what will bhakti do for him?” So, in reply to the question of Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Advaita Gosāñi said that the path of impersonal knowledge was superior to devotional service, and that if one had spiritual knowledge, there is no need to practice devotional service.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Ādi-līlā, 17.66

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.134

piḍā haite advaitere dhariyā
āniyāsvahaste kilāya prabhu uṭhāne pāḍiyā

Translation: He dragged Advaita from His seat into the courtyard and began beating Him with His own hands.

Since Advaita said that jñāna was more glorious than bhakti, Mahāprabhu dragged Him into the courtyard and began to profusely beat Him in order to teach people.

Jayapatākā Swami: Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! He dragged Advaita Ācārya from His seat into the courtyard, and then with His own hands, He started to beat Him! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! So Caitanya Mahāprabhu started beating Advaita Ācārya, since He was presenting that jñāna-yoga was superior to bhakti yoga or devotional service. So, He did this to teach everyone, and this was what Advaita Ācārya wanted.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.135

Translation: Although she knew everything, Advaita's chaste wife and mother of the universe tried to restrain the Lord.

Jayapatākā Swami: Advaita’s wife who was very faithful to her husband, very chaste wife and mother of the whole universe, although she knew everything, she tried to restrain the Lord, and Nityānanda Prabhu was laughing. Haridāsa Ṭhākura was feeling fearful.

Jayapatākā Swami: He is an old brāhmaṇa, spare His life. On whose instructions, You insult Him so much?

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.137

Translation: “This brāhmaṇa is so old. What more will You do to Him? If something happens to Him, You cannot escape the consequences.”

The wife of Advaita said, “Advaita has become very old. Killing a brāhmaṇa is prohibited in the scriptures. If a brāhmaṇa is killed by excessive beating, then it is impossible for the person responsible to become free from the offense.”

Jayapatākā Swami: Ha! Ha! “This brāhmaṇa is so old, what more will You do to Him? If something happens to Him, You will not be able to escape the consequences!” So Advaita’s chaste wife was saying that Advaita is an old brāhmaṇa, and killing a brāhmaṇa is a great offence, prohibited in all the śāstras, scriptures. If a brahmana is killed by excessive beating, then it becomes impossible for the person responsible, to become free from the offence.

Translation: “You brought Me to reveal the science of devotional service, but now You are covering devotional service with Your explanations on jñāna.

Śrī Advaita Prabhu revealed the glories of devotional service by inducing Śrīman Mahāprabhu to appear in this material world. But since at this point He was misguiding people with His explanations on jñāna that cover the propensity of service to the Supreme Lord, His original purpose was being frustrated. This was revealed by Mahāprabhu.

Jayapatākā Swami: “You brought Me down to reveal the science of devotional service. But now, You are covering devotional service with the explanation of jñāna-yoga.” Advaita Ācārya’s original purpose was to bring down Śrī Caitanya Mahaprabhu, to establish bhakti-yoga, devotional service. Since He was misguiding the people, with His explanation of impersonal jñāna-yoga, He was working against the natural propensity of people to serve the Supreme Lord. His real purpose was being frustrated. So, this was revealed by Caitanya Mahāprabhu.

Any questions?

Question: Bengali: Guru Mahārāja, Please accept my respectful obeisances. Your disciple and my mother, Sandinī Devakī dāsī, Śrī Śrī Rādhā Govinda ISKCON Mandira, Nārāyaṇa Gañj, was serving in preparing bhoga for Lord Jagannātha. She was unwell for quite some time and last 7th April, 2020, she left her body. In this lockdown situation, no devotees were able to participate in her final rites. Under these circumstance, on17th April, how will I fulfill the Śrāddha ceremony? What should I do? Kindly advise as the temple is under lockdown. Your spiritual son, Madbhakta dāsa, Nārāyaṇa gañj, Bangladesh.

Jayapatākā Swami: Devotees could perform a smṛti-sabha over the internet using Zoom or some other app. And then have everyone participate. This devotee should be befittingly glorified and I don’t know what restrictions are there on devotees for the cremation of her body? But someone in the UK left his body, many people attended his funeral before this lockdown period. And unfortunately, some people got the corona virus. So naturally, only maybe a few family members could be present at the cremation. But using internet you can have a grand smṛti-sabha. And so, I don’t know what else to say. Or otherwise, everyone can send their offering to her and this could be read out over the internet using what’s app or some other program.

Question – Facebook: Dear Guru Mahārāja, PAMRO. As per your desire I am trying to preach to a few friends online. I find it difficult to preach to those in the mode of goodness. They say, we are not in distress, we are happy in the present situation. We are good to others and they are good to us. We don’t see the benefit or feel the need to approach God or chant His name. Anyway He is always with us and we are living by His mercy. Guru Mahārāja, how do we preach to such people? Your insignificant servant, Prema Gaurasundara dāsa.

Jayapatākā Swami: You see, every human being has to perform yajña for Viṣṇu. And in the Satya-yuga it was meditation, Tretā-yuga it was homa, Dvāpara-yuga was worship of the Lord, and in the Kali-yuga, it is the chanting of the holy name. Even if someone is in the mode of goodness, they still commit jñāta or ajñāta-pāpa. So just like sweeping in the house, lighting a fire, walking on the street, you are killing some bugs, you cannot avoid it. Even you are driving a car, some bugs die on the windshield. And you may drive over some bug. There are various ways one has, what you call, ajñāta-pāpa. So even if they are in the mode of goodness and even if they think they are happy, but due to their previous karmas, in this life also they are also creating sinful reactions, so they need to do the chanting in this Age of Kali.

Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare/ Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare!

kṛte yad dhyāyato viṣṇuṁ
tretāyāṁ yajato makhaiḥ
dvāpare paricaryāyāṁ
kalau tad dhari-kīrtanāt

So, in this age of Kali-yuga should do the sacrifice of chanting the holy names and that is prescribed in all the śāstras.

I will be giving a darśana at 8 o’clock to the North American yātrā. I will be speaking in English. So if anyone wants to attend they are welcome! So now, I have to retire, take my dinner and get ready for 8 pm. Haribol!

Thank you Jalaṅgī, Ahlādinī, Yamunā Līlāvatī and Nārāyaṇī Rādhā.
