śāsti pāi, advaita paramānanda-māyā
hāte tāli diyā nāce kariyā vinaya

Translation: Advaita was filled with ecstasy after receiving His punishment. He clapped His hands and danced in humility.

Jayapatākā Swami: Advaita Ācārya was filled with ecstasy after receiving punishment. He clapped His hands and danced in humility.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.153

“yena aparādha kailuṅ, tena śāsti pāiluṅ
bhālai karilā prabhu alpe eḍāiluṅ

Translation: “I have received proper punishment for My offense. O Lord, You are very kind and have actually given Me only a token punishment.

Jayapatākā Swami: “For the offence I have committed, I have received the proper punishment. You are very merciful Lord! You have actually given me only a token punishment.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.154

ekhana se ṭhākurāla bujhiluṅ tomāra
doṣa-anurūpa śāsti karilā āmāra

Translation: “Now I have realized Your supremacy. You have suitably punished Me for My fault.

Jayapatākā Swami: “I have realized now Your supremacy. You have appropriately punished Me for My fault.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.155

ihāte se prabhu bhṛtye citte bala pāya
baliyā ānande nāce śāntipura-rāya

Translation: “Now the relationship between the Lord and His servant has been strengthened.” After speaking in this way, the Lord of Śāntipura danced in ecstasy.

Jayapatākā Swami: “Now by this, the relationship between the Master and the servitor, has been strengthened. Saying this, the Lord of Śāntipura danced in ecstasy”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.156

ānande advaita nāce sakala aṅgane
bhrukuṭi kariyā bale prabhura caraṇe

Translation: Advaita danced in ecstasy throughout the courtyard. He frowned and spoke to the Lord as follows.

Jayapatākā Swami: Advaita Gosāñi danced in ecstasy throughout the courtyard. Frowning, He spoke to the lotus feet of the Lord as follows.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.157

“kothā gela ebe more tomāra se stuti?
kothā gela ebe tora se saba ḍhāṅgāti?

Translation: “Where has Your glorification of Me gone now? Where has all Your deceitful behavior gone now?

The word ḍhāṅgāti means “pretension.” Advaita said, “Where has all Your glorification of Me gone now? When I began preaching a nondevotional path, You beat Me rather than glorify Me. I never desired any service from You, I only desired to serve You. According to Your pretentious nature You have unrightfully offered Me prayers, but now You cannot continue doing so. I am Your eternal servant and You are My eternal master. It is not proper for You to offer prayers to Your servant. Your nature is to chastise Your servant and accept his prayers. Rather than doing so, You have unrightfully glorified Me. Now, rather than glorifying Me, You have properly punished Me.”

Jayapatākā Swami: “Where has all the praise and glorification that You offered Me gone now? Where has all Your deceitful behaviour gone now?” So Advaita Gosāñi was saying that since the Lord previously offered Him all respect, this was pretentious. Because once He started to preach non devotional service, the Lord punished Him. And He never wanted the Lord to praise Him. He always wanted to serve the Lord. He is the eternal servant, and the Lord is His eternal master. So, since He chastised him, His nature is to chastise His servitor, and accept the prayers of the servant. Instead of doing that, you unrightfully glorified Me, and now finally You have punished Me rather than glorify Me, which is proper.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.158

durvāsā nā haṅa muñi yāre kadarthibe
yāra avaśeṣa-anna sarvāṅge lepibe

Translation: “I am not Durvāsā Muni, who You insulted by smearing his remnants all over Your body.

“I am Your eternal servant. I am not an oppressor of the Lord and the devotees as is Durvāsā. If I had actually become envious of the devotional service of Hari like Durvāsā, then You could have condemned Me. But I am Your devotee.”

It is mentioned in the Purāṇas that the Lord smeared the remnants of Durvāsā's rice all over His body.

Jayapatākā Swami: “I am not Durvāsā Muni, who You insulted, and You by smearing his remnants all over Your body.” In the Purāṇas it is mentioned that the Lord smeared the rice remnants of Durvāsā Muni over His body. So Advaita Gosāñi is using the example of Durvāsā Muni is against devotional service. So naturally, the Lord acted like that. But Advaita Gosāñi was saying that He is a devotee, He didn’t expect to be treated with respect, He simply wants to be accepted as a devotee of Lord Gaurāṅga.

For a description of this incident one may refer to the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, Tenth Canto, Chapter 89.

Jayapatākā Swami: “I am not Bhṛgu Muni, whose foot dust You happily accepted on Your chest, as Śrīvatsa.” For a description of this incident one may refer to the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, Tenth Canto, Chapter 89.

janme janme tomāra ucchiṣṭe mora āśa

Translation: “My name is Advaita, and I am Your unalloyed servant. My only wish is to honor Your remnants birth after birth.

Jayapatākā Swami: “My name is Advaita, I am Your pure servitor, unalloyed servitor. Birth after birth, I simply wish to take Your remnants.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.161

Translation: “By the influence of Your remnants I am unaffected by Your illusory energy. You have punished Me, now give Me the shelter of Your lotus feet.”

In the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam (11.6.46) it is stated:

tvayopabhukta-srag-gandha-
vāso-'laṅkāra-carcitāḥ
ucchiṣṭa-bhojino dāsās
tava māyāṁ jayema hi

“Simply by decorating ourselves with the garlands, fragrant oils, clothes, and ornaments that You have already enjoyed, and by eating the remnants of Your meals, we, Your servants, will indeed conquer Your illusory energy.”

Jayapatākā Swami: “By the influence of Your remnants, I remained unaffected by māyā. Now You have punished Me. Now give Me the shade of Your lotus feet.” So, the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 11.6.46 states: “Simply by decorating ourselves with the garlands, fragrant oils, clothes, and ornaments that You have already enjoyed, and by eating the remnants of Your meals, we, Your servants, will indeed conquer Your illusory energy.”

Jayapatākā Swami: Viśvambhara respectfully picked up Advaita Gosāñi and embraced Him and cried profusely.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.164

advaitera bhakti dekhi' nityānanda-rāya

Translation: On seeing Advaita's devotion, Nityānanda Prabhu cried so profusely that it appeared as if a river was flowing from His eyes.

Jayapatākā Swami: Prabhu Nityānanda seeing this devotion of Advaita Gosāñi, started to cry so profusely, it seemed like a river was flowing from His eyes.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Ādi-līlā, 17.68

তবে আচার্য গোসাঞির আনন্দ হৈল
লজ্জিত হৈযা প্রভু প্রসাদ করিল

Translation: At that time Advaita Ācārya was greatly pleased. The Lord understood this, and He was somewhat ashamed, but He offered Advaita Ācārya His benediction.

Purport: Advaita Ācārya was a disciple of Mādhavendra Purī, Īśvara Purī’s spiritual master. Therefore, Īśvara Purī, the spiritual master of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, was Advaita Ācārya’s Godbrother. In view of this, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu treated Advaita Ācārya as His spiritual master, but Śrī Advaita Ācārya did not like this behavior of Lord Caitanya, for He wanted to be treated as His eternal servant. Advaita Prabhu’s aspiration was to be a servant of the Lord, not His spiritual master. He therefore devised a plan to antagonize the Lord. He began to explain the path of philosophical speculation in the midst of some unfortunate Māyāvādīs, and when Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu heard about this, He immediately went there and in a very angry mood began to beat Advaita Ācārya. At that time, Advaita Ācārya, greatly pleased, began to dance, saying, “Just see how My desire has now been fulfilled! Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu used to treat Me honorably for so long, but now He is treating Me neglectfully. This is My reward. His affection for Me is so great that He wanted to save Me from the hands of the Māyāvādīs.” Hearing this statement, Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu was somewhat ashamed, but He was very pleased with Advaita Ācārya.

Translation: Viśvambhara felt embarrassed for having beaten Advaita, so He happily awarded Advaita a benediction.

Jayapatākā Swami: Viśvambhara prabhu felt embarrassed, ashamed for having beaten up Advaita Gosāñi. So, with great satisfaction, He awarded Advaita Gosāñi with a benediction.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.168-169

“tilārddheko ye tomāra karaye āśraya

yadi mora sthāne kare śata aparādha
tathāpi tāhāre muñi kariba prasāda”

Translation: “I will bestow mercy on any living entity—even an ant, insect, animal, or bird—who takes shelter of You for even a moment, even if that living entity commits hundreds of offenses against Me.”

Jayapatākā Swami: “For even a second if someone takes shelter of Your lotus feet, even if they are an animal, an insect, a beast, a bird, even if they commit hundreds of offences to Me, I will give them mercy, upon them.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.170

Translation: On hearing the benediction, Advaita Mahāśaya began to cry. He caught hold of the Lord's feet and humbly spoke as follows.

Jayapatākā Swami: When Advaita Mahāśaya heard the Lord’s benediction, He grabbed the Lord’s lotus feet, and He humbly spoke the following.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.171

“ye tumi balilā prabhu kabhu mithyā naya
mora eka pratijñāśunaha mahāśaya

Translation: “O Lord, whatever You spoke can never prove false, but please listen to My declaration.

Jayapatākā Swami: “My Lord, whatever You have said, is never proved false. But, My dear Lord, please listen to My promise.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.172

gaurasebātyāgī adbaita-bhaktera saṃhāra-prāpti

yadi tore nā māniyā more bhakti kare
sei mora bhakti tabe tāhāre saṁhāre

Translation: “If one worships Me but does not accept You, then may his devotion to Me annihilate him.

Advaita said, “O Lord Viśvambhara, may the devotion of My descendants and so-called disciples who give up Your service and eagerly engage in My service destroy them. This is My declaration.” Since the ignorant descendants and foolish disciples of Advaita do not consider Śrī Advaita Prabhu as the eternal servant of Śrī Caitanyadeva but consider Him “Viṣṇu” and consider Gaurasundara as “Lakṣmī,” they fall from the path of devotional service and bring about their own ruination.

Jayapatākā Swami: “If there is someone who does not accept You, but they give their devotion to Me, may that devotion annihilate that person, devotion to Me may annihilate that person.” So He was saying that if His so called descendants or disciples who respected Him, did not respect Lord Caitanya, give up the service of Gaurāṅga, even if they eagerly engage in My service said Advaita, may they be destroyed, this is My declaration. And they think that Advaita is Viṣṇu and Gaurasundara is Lakṣmī, and don’t accept that Advaita is an eternal servitor of Gaurasundara, and they fall from the path of devotional service, and bring about their own ruination.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.173

gaurapādapadme prītihīna adbaita-putra-śiṣyabarga adbaitera tyājya

ye tomāra pāda-padma nā kare bhajana
tore nā mānile kabhu nahe mora jana

Translation: “One who does not worship Your lotus feet and accept You as the Supreme Lord is not dear to Me.

“O Viśvambhara, I will not accept anyone as My own if they have no love for the service of Your lotus feet. I am prepared to totally forsake all such descendants and disciples.” Even today the Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇavas consider such descendants of Advaita and their disciples as forsaken descendants and forsaken disciples. The prediction of Śrī Advaita Prabhu has born fruit. The intimate disciples and descendants of Advaita Prabhu accepted subordination of Paṇḍita Gadādhara, but the hostile sons and disciples of Advaita did not accept Gadādhara Paṇḍita Gosvāmī's guidance and could not accept him as spiritual master.

Jayapatākā Swami: “One who does not worship Your lotus feet, and accept you as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, are never My followers.” So Advaita was telling Lord Viśvambhara that He would never accept anyone if they don’t have love for the lotus feet of Lord Caitanya. And He is willing to forsake His descendants, His disciples, in that case. So those followers, descendants and disciples of Advaita who did not accept Lord Caitanya as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, are not considered as real disciples or descendants. Advaita Gosāñi accepted Gadādhara Paṇḍita, but His so-called followers and descendants did not accept that.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.174

ye tomāre bhaje prabhu se mora jīvana
nā pāroṅ sahite muñi tomāra laṅghana

Translation: “Anyone who worships You is My life and soul. I cannot tolerate a person who disregards You.

Since Mahāprabhu assumed the mood of a devotee, the foolish followers of Advaita accepted Viśvambhara as the āśraya-vigraha (worshiper) rather than as the viṣaya-vigraha (the object of worship). As a result, they disregard Viśvambhara, and even though out of foolishness they illegitimately try to become members of Viṣṇu's family, they end up as forsaken descendants and forsaken disciples. The nonduplicitous servants of Lord Caitanya are the topmost devotees. Mahāprabhu's own servant, Advaita, is like the Lord's own life. Those who give up the service of Śrī Caitanyadeva, the viṣaya-vigraha, and exploit Advaita's glories to maintain their own self-interest remain eternally bereft of the Lord's mercy and become attached to pride and false prestige. Even today some people who identify themselves as Advaita's descendants try to establish that the pure devotees' execution of pure devotional service is for gaining false prestige. This reveals their illegitimate pride. Such puffed-up people with no understanding of the actual glories of devotional service proudly consider themselves as either Vaiṣṇavas belonging to Lord Viṣṇu's family or servants of that family's descendants and thus merge into the abysmal waters of the ocean of pratiṣṭhāśā, the desire for material reputation. Pure devotees simply pray that Śrī Advaita Prabhu may forgive their offenses and give them good intelligence.

Jayapatākā Swami: “Who worships You Lord, is My life and soul. I cannot tolerate anyone who disregards You.” So, some of the descendants of Advaita Gosāñi did not accept Viśvambhara as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, in the mood of a devotee. Took Him as simply a devotee. As a result, they just disregard Viśvambhara out of their foolishness, they still try to claim to be descendants from Advaita Gosāñi. Saying that they are member of the Mahā-Viṣṇu family. But Advaita Gosāñi, He proclaimed. that the unalloyed devotees of Lord Caitanya are His life and soul. Those who give up the service of Lord Caitanya, they lose the mercy of Advaita Gosāñi, they are attached to false prestige and pride. So, the previous Ācāryas have said, that there are some descendants of Advaita Gosāñi who are against devotional service, and criticize it. So, this establishes the illegitimate pride, and such members of Advaita Gosāñi’s family are actually not accepted by Advaita Gosāñi. So, this is mentioned in the Caitanya-caritāmṛta. The pure devotees pray for the mercy of Advaita Gosāñi, that He may forgive their offences and give them good intelligence.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.175

yadi mora putra haya, haya vā kiṅkara
`vaiṣṇavāparādhī' muñi nā dekhoṅ gocara

Translation: “I cannot look at the face of a vaiṣṇava-aparādhī, even if he happens to be My son or servant.

When three of Śrī Advaita's sons and a few of His so-called disciples became offensive towards Śrī Caitanyadeva and His pure devotees, Advaita Prabhu severed all ties and affection with them. This is understood from Advaita's statement. From the time of His presence up to today His forsaken sons and disciples of His descendants have no connection whatsoever with Śrī Advaita or Śrī Caitanyadeva. They glorify their nondevotional credentials even today.

Jayapatākā Swami: Even if someone is My descendant or My disciple, or My servitor, and they are vaiṣṇava-aparādhī, I cannot look at their face. So, I think, in the 12th chapter of the Ādi-līlā Caitanya-caritāmṛta, three of the six sons of Advaita Gosāñi they committed offences to Lord Caitanya and His pure devotees.  So Advaita Gosāñi severed all ties or connections with them. So, from that time, to the present day, the forsaken sons and disciples. Just as the connection was severed between Advaita Gosāñi and His forsaken sons and disciples, similarly the connection between the mike and our audio has been severed! Ha!

So, we see how Advaita Gosāñi, He is completely dedicated to Lord Caitanya. And His only desire was to be accepted as a servant of Lord Caitanya. So, when Lord Caitanya offered Him respect, that was very painful for Him. When Lord Caitanya punished Him, He felt great ecstasy. So, this is not very understandable by common people. But those who are devotees could understand the Lord, He was very happy, ecstatic, when He was treated as an inferior by Lord Caitanya.

Thus ends the chapter, Advaita Ācārya's Ecstasy Upon Receiving the Punishment
