Under the Section: The Lord’s Attempt to Go to Vṛndāvana

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 16.161

mochalema śāsakera janaika guptacarera nija-svāmisakāśe prabhu o tatsaṅgigaṇera kriyā o mahimā varṇana:—

aneka siddha-puruṣa haya tāṅhāra sahite

Translation: The Muslim spy saw the wonderful characteristics of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, and when he returned to the Muslim governor, he told him, “A mendicant has come from Jagannātha Purī with many liberated persons.

Translation: All these saintly people incessantly chant the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra, and they all laugh, dance, chant and cry.

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 16.165

lakṣa lakṣa loka āise tāhā dekhibāre
tāṅre dekhi’ punarapi yāite nāre ghare

Translation: Many millions upon millions of people come to see Him, and after they see Him, they cannot return home.

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 16.166

sei saba loka haya bāulera prāya
‘kṛṣṇa’ kahi’ nāce, kānde, gaḍāgaḍi yāya

Translation: All these people become like madmen. They simply chant the holy name of Kṛṣṇa and dance. Sometimes they even cry and roll on the ground.

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 16.167

kahibāra kathā nahe—dekhile se jāni
tāṅhāra prabhāve tāṅre ‘īśvara’ kari’ māni’

Translation: Actually these things cannot even be described. One can understand them only by seeing. Considering His influence, I accept Him as the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, this spy was so influenced by seeing Lord Caitanya, that he became convinced that He was the Supreme Personality of Godhead and he described all these unique happenings to the Governor, that people were chanting and dancing and showing ecstatic symptoms.

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 16.168

sei guptacarera premāveśa:—

eta kahi’ sei cara ‘hari’ ‘kṛṣṇa’ gāya
hāse, kānde, nāce, gāya bāulera prāya

Translation: After saying this, the messenger began to chant the holy names of Hari and Kṛṣṇa. He also began to laugh and cry, dance and sing exactly like a madman.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, by seeing Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu, even the Muslim spy became so much affected that he was chanting and dancing.

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 16.169

guptacaramukhe prabhura kathā-śravaṇe mochalema
śāsakera prabhusamīpe amātya-preraṇa—

eta śuni’ yavanera mana phiri’ gela
āpana-‘viśvāsa’ uḍiyā sthāne pāṭhāila

Translation: When the Muslim governor heard this, his mind changed. He then sent his secretary to the representative of the Orissan government.

Jayapatākā Swami: Such was the influence of Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu, just by hearing about Him, the Muslim Governor's mind was changed.

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 16.170

amātyera prabhupada-vandanā o premāveśa:—

‘viśvāsa’ āsiyā prabhura caraṇa vandila
‘kṛṣṇa’ ‘kṛṣṇa’ kahi’ preme vihvala ha-ila

Translation: The Muslim secretary came to see Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. When he offered his respects to the Lord’s lotus feet and uttered the holy name of the Lord, “Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa,” he also was overwhelmed with ecstatic love.

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 16.171

rāja-karmacāri-samīpe tāhāra kātarabhāve nivedana o sandhi prārthanā:—

dhairya hañā uḍiyāke kahe namaskari’
‘tomā-sthāne pāṭhāilā mleccha adhikārī

Translation: After calming down, the Muslim secretary offered his respects and informed the representative of the Orissan government, "The Muslim governor has sent me here."

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 16.172

tumi yadi ājñā deha’ ethāke āsiyā
yavana adhikārī yāya prabhuke miliyā

Translation: If you agree, the Muslim governor will come here to meet Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and then return.

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 16.173

bahuta utkaṇṭhā tāṅra, karyāche vinaya
tomā-sane ei sandhi, nāhi yuddha-bhaya

Translation: The Muslim governor is very eager, and he has submitted this petition with great respect. It is a proposal for peace. You need not fear that we will fight.

Jayapatākā Swami: Naturally there was up and down war between the Northern empire and the Southern Empire but this time the Orissan Government assured that there was no intention to fight.

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 16.174

prabhukarttṛka mochalema-śāsakera citta-parivarttane rāja-karmacārīra vismaya:—

śuni’ mahā-pātra kahe hañā vismaya
madyapa yavanera citta aiche ke karaya!

Translation: Upon hearing this proposal, the representative of the Orissan government, the mahā-pātra, was very much astonished. He thought, “The Muslim governor is a drunkard. Who has changed his mind?

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 16.175

āpane mahāprabhu tāṅra mana phirāila
darśana-smaraṇe yāṅra jagat tārila

Translation: It must be Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu Himself who has changed the Muslim’s mind. Due to His presence and even due to His remembrance, the whole world is liberated.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, by Lord Caitanya’s remembrance the whole world can be changed. So we should take inspiration from this, chant Hare Kṛṣṇa and tell people about the glories of Lord Caitanya. Just by hearing the glories of Lord Caitanya their mind may be changed.

Purport: From this we can understand that since the Muslim governor was a drunkard (madyapa), ordinarily there would have been no chance that he would change. But Lord Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu could turn anyone’s mind to Kṛṣṇa consciousness. One can be delivered from material existence simply by remembering Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu’s holy name or by visiting Him. This Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is being spread throughout the world, but not even one yavana mleccha addicted to drinking could have changed and accepted Kṛṣṇa consciousness without Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu’s grace. People are often astonished to see many thousands of Westerners converted to Vaiṣṇavism. Generally Westerners are addicted to meat-eating, drinking, gambling and illicit sex; therefore their taking up Kṛṣṇa consciousness is astonishing. In India, especially, there is much astonishment at this. The answer, however, is given here: darśana-smaraṇe yāṅra jagat tārila. This change is made possible simply by the remembrance of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. The Western devotees are very sincerely chanting the holy names of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and His associates: śrī-kṛṣṇa-caitanya prabhu-nityānanda śrī-advaita gadādhara śrīvāsādi-gaura-bhakta-vṛnda. By the mercy of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and His associates, people are being purified and their consciousness directed from māyā to Kṛṣṇa. The word viśvāsa refers to a secretary. This title is generally found among the kāyastha caste in the Hindu community. In Bengal, the title viśvāsa is still used by the kāyasthas. The word viśvāsa means "faith," and a viśvāsī is a person in whom one can place faith. Śrī Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura states that during the Muslim reign in Bengal there was a secretaries' office called the viśvāsa-khānā. In that office only the most reliable people were employed. They were selected from the kāyastha community, a community that is very expert in managing business and government affairs. So those who worked in the viśvāsa-khānā were generally very reliable and faithful servants. Whenever some confidential service was needed, these officers were employed.

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 16.176

mochalema śāsakake prabhu-darśane sammatidāna:—

eta bali’ viśvāsere kahila vacana
bhāgya tāṅra—āsi’ karuka prabhu daraśana

Translation: After thinking this, the mahā-pātra immediately informed the Muslim secretary, “It is a great fortune for your governor. Let him come visit Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 16.177

pratīta kariye—yadi nirastra hañā
āsibeka pāṅca-sāta bhṛtya saṅge lañā

Translation: However, let me make it understood that he should come here without weapons. He may bring with him five or seven servants.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, this Muslim Governor was so fortunate that He could see Lord Caitanya. Lord Caitanya came over five hundred years ago, so we don’t have that same good fortune. However, Lord Caitanya’s pastimes, memory, name are not different. So, His Divine Grace Śrīla AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda, brought the message of Lord Caitanya, His holy name, etc., around the world. So, people all over the world are somehow or other getting the mercy of Lord Caitanya. Sometimes they are laughing, dancing, chanting, crying, even rolling on the ground. They are chanting and dancing like madmen. So, this shows how the transcendental world has unlimited happiness and the material world is very petty and superficial and so in this way people’s life can be changed. and so in this way people’s life can be changed.

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 16.176

mochalema śāsakake prabhu-darśane sammatidāna:—

eta bali’ viśvāsere kahila vacana
bhāgya tāṅra—āsi’ karuka prabhu daraśana

Translation: After thinking this, the mahā-pātra immediately informed the Muslim secretary, "It is a great fortune for your governor. Let him come visit Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu."

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 16.177

pratīta kariye—yadi nirastra hañā
āsibeka pāṅca-sāta bhṛtya saṅge lañā

Translation: However, let me make it understood that he should come here without weapons. He may bring with him five or seven servants.

Jayapatākā Swami: Such were the pastime of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and Lord Caitanya has to cross through the area over which the Governor is in-charge. So, by his meeting Lord Caitanya, Lord Caitanya will be able to peacefully cross his area.

Thus ends the chapter entitled, With Great Eagerness and Respect, The Drunkard Muslim Governor Submits Petition to Meet Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.
