Hariḥ oṁ tat sat!

Hare Kṛṣṇa! Dear Devotees! Today we will continue with the compilation of Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Book. Today's chapter is entitled as:

Satyabhāmā Orders and Lord Caitanya Confirms to Write Vidagdha-mādhava and Lalita-mādhava Seperately (Part 2)
Under the section: Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī’s Second Meeting with the Lord Part 2

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.55

śrī-rūpakarttṛka sakala bhaktera caraṇa-vandana, sakalera rūpake āliṅganaḥ—

sabāra caraṇa rūpa karilā vandana
kṛpā kari’ rūpe sabe kailā āliṅgana

Translation: Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī offered his respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of them all, and all the devotees, by their mercy, embraced him.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, the devotees experienced loving relationships, Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī offered his obeisances to all the assembled devotees and the assembled devotees affectionately offered Rūpa Gosvāmī their āliṅgana. This is a natural expression among Vaiṣṇavas.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.56

śrī-rūpake kṛpā karite mahāprabhura nitāi o advaita prabhudvayake anurodhaḥ—

‘advaita nityānanda, tomarā dui-jane’
prabhu kahe—rūpe kṛpā kara kāya-mane

Translation: Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu told Advaita Ācārya and Nityānanda Prabhu, “You should both show Your mercy wholeheartedly to Rūpa Gosvāmī.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Rūpa Gosvāmī according to the authoritative books is actually the ninth mañjarī from Goloka Vṛndāvana, first eight are aṣṭa-sakhī and he is ninth. He is the younger brother of Sanātana Gosvāmī, but he is considered the leader of the six Gosvāmī and he is carrying out some very confidential services for Lord Caitanya. So, Lord Caitanya is asking Advaita Prabhu and Nityānanda prabhu to shower their mercy on him.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.57

tomā-duṅhāra kṛpāte iṅhāra ha-u taiche śakti
yāte vivarite pārena kṛṣṇa-rasa-bhakti

Translation: “May Rūpa Gosvāmī, by Your mercy, become so powerful that he will be able to describe the transcendental mellows of devotional service.”

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Rūpa Gosvāmī wants to write about the transcendental mellow, to write these things one needs to be empowered. So, Lord Caitanya is asking his expansions to also empower him.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.58

śrī-rūpa—prabhura sakalabhakterai prīti-bhājanaḥ—

gauḍiyā, uḍiyā, yata prabhura bhakta-gaṇa
sabāra ha-ila rūpa snehera bhājana

Translation: Thus Rūpa Gosvāmī became the object of love and affection for all the devotees of the Lord, including those who came from Bengal and those who resided in Orissa.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, it is understood that Rūpa Gosvāmī he acted very respectfully to all Caitanya Mahāprabhu’s devotees, therefore all the devotees both from Bengal and Orissa loved Rūpa Gosvāmī. So, we should treat devotees with great respect and devotees could naturally reciprocrate with love so we see that this situation is exemplified by Rūpa Gosvāmī in Nīlācala.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.59

svayaṁ prabhura śrī-rūpake pratyaha darśana-prasāda dāna :—

pratidina āsi’ rūpe karena milane
mandire ye prasāda pāna, dena dui jane

Translation: Every day Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu would go to see Rūpa Gosvāmī, and whatever prasāda He received from the temple He would deliver to Rūpa Gosvāmī and Haridāsa Ṭhākura.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Rūpa Gosvāmī was engaged in the employment of Nawab Hussain Shah, as the Finance Minister, he had received a Muslim name and therefore he felt improper to enter the Jagannātha Purī temple. Lord Caitanya after visiting Jagannātha He will deliver prasāda to Rūpa Gosvāmī and Haridāsa Ṭhākura, thus walking Jagannātha was giving His mercy for these two vaiṣṇavas.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.60

śrī-rūpa-saṅge prabhura kṛṣṇa-kathāḥ

iṣṭa-goṣṭhī duṅhā sane kari’ kata-kṣaṇa
madhyāhna karite prabhu karilā gamana

Translation: He would talk for some time with them both and then leave to perform His noontime duties.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Caitanya would be discussing topics of Lord Kṛṣṇa and thus everyday they were having association with Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu hearing the topics of Śrī Kṛṣṇa.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.61

prabhu-kṛpālābhe śrī-rūpera ānandaḥ

ei-mata pratidina prabhura vyavahāra
prabhu-kṛpā pāñā rūpera ānanda apāra

Translation: In this way Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu’s dealings with them continued every day. Thus receiving the transcendental favor of the Lord, Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī felt unlimited pleasure.

Jayapatākā Swami: Śrī Rūpa Gosvāmī had spontaneous love for Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and Lord Caitanya visited him every day and Rūpa Gosvāmī felt great transcendental pleasure and his understanding of Kṛṣṇa consciousness grew and grew.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.62

bhaktagaṇasaha prabhura nīlācala-līlāḥ

bhakta-gaṇa lañā kailā guṇḍicā mārjana
āitoṭā āsi’ kailā vanya-bhojana

Translation: After Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, taking all His devotees with Him, performed the Guṇḍicā-mārjana [washing and cleansing of the Guṇḍicā temple], He went to the garden known as Āiṭoṭā and accepted prasādam at a picnic within the garden.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, just as Lord Kṛṣṇa would take His picnic lunch with His cowherd boyfriends, in the nearby garden Lord Caitanya was taking His picnic lunch with His associates. So we can say that the pastimes of Lord Caitanya are very similar to the pastimes of Lord Kṛṣṇa and devotees are greatly enthused by the loving dealings of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.63

sarvabhaktera ānanda-darśane śrī-rūpa-haridāsera ānandaḥ—

prasāda khāya, ‘hari’ bale sarva-bhakta-jana
dekhi’ haridāsa-rūpera haraṣita mana

Translation: When Haridāsa Ṭhākura and Rūpa Gosvāmī saw that all the devotees were accepting prasādam and chanting the holy name of Hari, they both were greatly pleased.

Jayapatākā Swami: In Jagannātha Purī, devotees would accept Lord Jagannātha’s prasāda and taking that with Lord Caitanya was a great festival and cleaning the Guṇḍicā temple was the special festival of devotional service. Normally people don’t feel very happy cleaning but cleaning with Lord Caitanya the temple of Lord Jagannātha and devotional service was a great source of joy for everyone. That was also added to by the picnic lunch with Lord Caitanya.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.64

prabhura ucchiṣṭāvaśeṣa-prāptite ubhayera prema-nṛtya : —

govinda-dvārā prabhura śeṣa-prasāda pāilā
preme matta dui-jana nācite lāgilā

Translation: When they received the remnants of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu’s prasādam through Govinda, they respected it, and then they both began to dance in ecstasy.

Jayapatākā Swami: When prasāda is eaten we call it respecting, because prasāda is a special mercy of the Supreme Lord. Haridāsa Ṭhākura and Rūpa Gosvāmī they got the remnants of the prasāda of Lord Caitanya that was called as mahā-prasāda, since Lord Jagannātha’s prasāda is also mahā-prasāda this was māhā mahā-prasāda. They felt such ecstasy they started dancing

Haribol ! Gurumahārāja kī! Jaya!

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.65

anya ekadina rūpera sahita prabhura milanaḥ

āra dina prabhu rūpe miliyā vasilā
sarvajña-śiromaṇi prabhu kahite lāgilā

Translation: On the next day, when Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu went to see Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī, the omniscient Lord spoke as follows.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.66

prabhura kṛpādeśai vidagdha-mādhava racanāra mūla-sūtrapātaḥ—

‘kṛṣṇere bāhira nāhi kariha vraja haite
vraja chāḍi’ kṛṣṇa kabhu nā yāna kāhāṅte

Translation: “Do not try to take Kṛṣṇa out of Vṛndāvana, for He does not go anywhere else at any time.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Caitanya was instructing Rūpa Gosvāmī, He revealed that Kṛṣṇa never leaves Vṛndāvana at any time. So, at one form or another Kṛṣṇa is always in Vṛndāvana, simultaneously He might be doing other pastimes in other dhāma.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.67

kevala-mātra vrajei vrajendranandanera avasthānaḥ—

laghu-bhāgavatāmṛte (1/5/461)-dhṛta yāmalavacanaḥ

Translation: “The Kṛṣṇa known as Yadu-kumāra is Vāsudeva Kṛṣṇa. He is different from the Kṛṣṇa, who is the son of Nanda Mahārāja. Yadu-kumāra Kṛṣṇa manifests His pastimes in the cities of Mathurā and Dvārakā, but Kṛṣṇa the son of Nanda Mahārāja never at any time leaves Vṛndāvana.”

Purport: By His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupāda! This verse is included in the Laghu-bhāgavatāmṛta (1.5.461), by Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Rūpa Gosvāmī took the instruction of Lord Caitanya and in his book Laghu-bhāgavatāmṛta he mentions that Kṛṣṇa has special relationship with Vṛndāvana and Vrajendranandana is always in Vṛndāvana and Kṛṣṇa who always goes to Mathurā and Dvārakā is Vāsudeva Kṛṣṇa but the original Kṛṣṇa is in Vṛndāvana.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.68

prabhura vākye śrī-rūpera mane mane vicāraḥ

eta kahi’ mahāprabhu madhyāhne calilā
rūpa-gosāñi mane kichu vismaya ha-ilā

Translation: After saying this, Caitanya Mahāprabhu went to perform His noontime duties, leaving Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī somewhat surprised.

Jayapatākā Swami: Since Rūpa Gosvāmī was originally thinking to put the pastime of Vṛndāvana and Dvārakā in one book, now Lord Caitanya was explaining about Kṛṣṇa in Vṛndāvana and Kṛṣṇa in Mathurā and Dvārakā are in two different moods. Kṛṣṇa in Vṛndāvana as a cowherd boy and Vāsudeva Kṛṣṇa in Mathurā and Dvārakā are in kṣatriya mood.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.69

śrī-satyabhāmā-devī o prabhu, ubhayerai pṛthakbhāve yathākrame lalita-mādhava o vidagdha-mādhava-nāṭaka likhite ādeśa pradānaḥ—

“pṛthak nāṭaka karite satyabhāmā ājñā dila
jānilu, pṛthak nāṭaka karite prabhu-ājñā haila

Translation: “Satyabhāmā ordered me to write two different dramas,” Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī thought. “Now I understand that this order has been confirmed by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī was very intelligent and he understood the Caitanya Mahāprabhu’s instruction, confirmed the order of Satyabhāmā.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.70

pūrve ekatra varṇita nāṭakadvayera ekṣaṇe pṛthakbhāve kalpana o racanaḥ—

pūrve dui nāṭaka chila ekatra racanā
dui-bhāga kari ebe karimu ghaṭanā

Translation: “Formerly I wrote the two dramas as one composition. Now I shall divide it and describe the incidents in two separate works.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, how Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī came to this conclusion is described here with dream he had with Satyabhāmā and Lord Caitanya.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.71

nāndī, prastāva o viṣaya prabhṛti samastai pṛthakbhāve cintanaḥ—

dui ‘nāndī’ ‘prastāvanā’, dui ‘saṁghaṭanā’
pṛthak kariyā likhi kariyā bhāvanā

Translation: “I shall write two separate invocations of good fortune and two different introductions. Let me think deeply about the matter and then describe two different sets of incidents.”

Purport: The two works are the Vidagdha-mādhava and the Lalita-mādhava. The Vidagdha-mādhava describes pastimes in Vṛndāvana, and the Lalita-mādhava describes pastimes in Dvārakā and Mathurā.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, how these Vidagdha-mādhava and the Lalita-mādhava came to have been described here. Rūpa Gosvāmī is describing the confidential pastimes of Lord Kṛṣṇa in two different moods, Vṛndāvana, Mathurā and Dvārakā.

Thus ends the chapter entitled, Satyabhāmā Orders and Lord Caitanya Confirms to Write Vidagdha-mādhava and Lalita-mādhava Seperately, Part 2
Under the section: Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī’s Second Meeting with the Lord
