The following is a lecture given by His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami Mahārāja on January 26, 1992 – in Bangalore, India. The lecture begins with a reading from Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 4.21.6-7.

As the king entered the gate of the city, all the citizens received him with many auspicious articles like lamps, flowers and yogurt. The king was also. Excuse me. Both the important citizens and common citizens welcomed the king very heartily and he also benedicted them with their desired blessings. Translation of revision Both the important citizens and the common citizens welcomed the king very heartily and he also benedicted them with their desired blessings. A responsible king was always approachable by his citizens. Generally, the citizens, great and common, all had an aspiration to see the king and take benediction from him. The king knew this and therefore whenever he met the citizens, he immediately fulfilled their desires or mitigated their grievances and such dealings.

Irresponsible monarchy is better than a so called democratic government in which no one is responsible to mitigate the grievances of the citizens who are unable to personally meet with supreme executive head. In a responsible monarchy the citizens have no grievances against the government and even if they did, they could approach the king directly for immediate satisfaction. Translation King Prithu was greater than the greatest soul and was therefore worshipable by everyone. He performed many glorious activities in ruling over the circumstances of the world and was always magnanimous. After achieving such great success and a reputation which spread throughout the universe, he at last obtained the lotus seat of the supreme personality of Guardian. Translation Repetition King Peter was greater than the greatest soul and was therefore worshipable by everyone.

He performed many glorious activities in ruling over the service of the world and was always magnanimous after achieving sunscreen. Great success and their reputation will spread throughout the universe. He at last obtained the lotus needs of the supreme personality of God himself. A responsible king or chief executive has many responsible duties to attend to and ruling over the citizens. The most important duty of the monarch or the government is to perform various sacrifices as enjoyed in the Vedic literature. The next duty of the king is to see that every citizen executes the prescribed duties for his particular community. It is the king’s duty to see that everyone perfectly executes the duties prescribed for the Varga and Ashrama divisions of society. Besides that, as exemplified by King Prithu, he must develop the earth for the greatest possible production of food grains.

There are different types of great personalities. Some are positive great personalities, some comparative and some superlative. But King Pritu exceeded all of them. He is therefore described here as Mahasava greater than the greatest Maharashtra VAs and he this gentle, was a Chatria and he discharged his Shakya duties perfectly. Similarly, Bhavana, Vaishya and Sudras can discharge their respective duties perfectly and thus at the ultimate end of life be promoted to the transcendental world which is called Parat Padam, Parat Padav or the Vaikutta planet can be achieved only by devotional service. The impersonal Brahman region is also called Paron Pharaoh. But unless one is attached to the personality of Godhead, one must again fall down to the material world from the impressible Paran Konam situation.

It is therefore said Aruya Vijayana Bharat Padat Tada the impersonal list in Dawah very strenuously to achieve the Para padang for impersonal Brahmachy. But unfortunately, being direct of a relationship with the supreme personality of Nagir, they come down again to the material world. If one flies in outer space, he can go very high up, but unless he reaches a planet, he must come down again to Earth. Similarly, because the impersonalist who reach the paragraph of the impersonal Brahma Jyoti do not enter into the Vaigunta planet, they come against thou to this material world and are given shelter in one of the material planets. Although they may attain Brahma Loka or Satya Loka, all such planets are situated in the material world.

Thus came the Bhaktivedantanaswami translation refer for to text 6, 7, chapter 21 of Canto 4 of the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam in the manner of instructions by Maharasha Pritu spoken on this 26th day of January. Kristofto 1992 Corrupto 505. So. Here these two verses. The glories of Biju Maharaj have been. Focused upon. First point, the quality of how a king or head of government. Functions. The responsible king was always approachable by his citizens. We understood that there used to be a bell which would be placed outside the Royal Sabah. If anybody had any complaint or anything to say to the king, they would ring the bell. Then they would be someone would go and bring them in what was their village. So in that time of. When was it Guru Zaina or Kṛṣṇa? But really nobody was using the bell.

One day somebody came and rang the bell. Nobody knew what was that sound, what is that strange sound? They didn’t even remember what the sound was. The Lord had said bell. My goodness, someone has agreed it. Then they sent for that person and it was a Ravana who was complaining that his son had died before he did so. That meant the king’s government was no good. How could a son die before the father? It Meant that there was irrelegia in the kingdom. Otherwise the normal sequence of events is only the son will die after the father dies. So things were in such a synchronized position that if the son died before the father Śrī Brāhmaṇa and make a complaint what type of government you’re running, you’re not doing it properly. Otherwise all my son died before I did. And the king took it seriously.

Really well, we have to look into this matter now you see, that’s why people think I would do mythology. But it’s not mythologies. It’s actually a how efficient things were. The government was so much in harmony. The king went through so much sacrifice. It was so much in harmony with nature, with Kṛṣṇa that actually things were going dislike clockwork. The seasons would come, the rains would come in time. Everything was going nicely. Nowadays, even somebody starving or their house are burned up, you go to the police. Nobody comes to defend if you’re being robbed. In fact, there’s a saying in Bengal that if you live next to the police station, there’s more chance of backlighting. I don’t know how far it’s true statistically. But they claim that the Nagoy will pay off the police and then just aggro in your house.

Because they already know that they’re paid off. So that means practically like having no government. Anyway, we see how King B2 was running. Did we get to actually watch this theater? The Lord has empowered King Prithu Isaac Shakhtaresh Avantar to show what is that top standard of management. The citizens love Prithu Maharashtra. Not just because there was some formal edict. When the king comes, he had to do this. There was actually that podemo that there was the ethics or the etiquette. But they were spontaneously offering the reception because he was really doing his job nicely. And they loved him, they appreciated his care. And he saw his citizen, his pūjā. Like the children. The genius of Padak is supposed to see the citizens or this is called pūjā and Jesus, like kind of extended children. He has to protect them.

He was so powerful he could solve immediately their problem. In another verse of the Bhāgavatam, it mentions that their monarch’s duty is to protect the citizens from the rogues and thieves. So there’s two kinds of rogues and thieves. There’s the back weight Pura, the citizens by force, through arms, illegally. So the other kind of rogue entreats are the government servants who harass the citizens and extract bribes from them in order to get ordinary jobs done. So you can say yourself whether we are protected at this time from either of these two walls and thieves. This is a standard of government, however. So the head of state in those days was such a responsible person, he could not be impeached very easily. At the same time, he was very careful to see to all that grievances of a citizen.

Only very high elevated Bhagavadas could impeach a king. And that was because of their great spiritual power. Otherwise king was a lifelong job. But he also had to rule according to the dictation of the Ravana. For the kings were not acting properly. That bar Surab came and cut them down to size, literally. So here is our standard of what a perfect head of state or government should be. Immediately solved all the grievances of the citizens. Unfortunately, today there are so many grievances that more or less always there’s some kind of punarvaga or some kind of what you call protest going on outside government buildings. But in spite of all the violent protest, there’s hardly any kind of solution for the problem. So this is very unfortunate kind of situation. Part of it you can.

The citizens themselves were properly trained what to expect in life. What was the standard they could hope for. You see, sometimes if somebody has an inconceivable kind of demand, a demand which is unrealizable, so that’s a king will be put in a very difficult position with the government. How can we provide this, such as this thing for everyone is not feasible. So the citizens themselves do want to expect. What was the duty of the government to provide? And what was the duty of their own hard labor, their own khutia, their own karmas to achieve this education, spiritual education, where people move, where to draw the light, one rose up of the government. Government did not try to do everything. They did not try to themselves create some huge bureaucracy to provide public welfare.

And then in the name of public welfare, they’re just maintaining many public servants who are actually hardly doing anything for the people in relation to all the conscious and skillet. Instead, the people themselves, they were charitable. And every grihastra before he would call out, is anybody hungry? Three times. And if anyone was hungry, then they would bring him in and feed him. Then only the kahastu would eat. That was the veiling system. So you consider that normally today even there’s about 10% unemployment, say 10% of the people are unemployed. That means the nine people who are unemployed, they would have to feed one person every ninth day, isn’t it? One family every ninth day they may have to feed. So that wouldn’t be once a week. If you have to feed a family, anybody, you’re feeding guests once a month, once a week.

That will not break the bank on anybody. But instead if you have to pay heavy taxes to provide so called low power infrastructure which hardly reaches the people that it’s meant for in the end anyway, what is the use? So the whole meat and culture was designed keep the government to a particular limited area. They will only get some people say 1/6 or some say 1/4 of the income of their people. We find in law for books 1/4 nonsense, 1/6 whatever. They are only allowed a certain minimum income from taxation. But they also they had a particular role to do. They had to protect the citizens. They had to see that sacrifices were performed, that the proper education was being provided. Their duty was to see everyone else was doing their duty. Not that they would assume to do the duty of everyone else.

The Kshatiyas wouldn’t perform the duty of the Vaishyas. They were no nationalized industries other this variety. They will not do the duty of the Brahmanas. They will see how the Brahmanas doing their duty. There are some interesting stories that illustrate even 200 years ago, 300 years ago, there was that king Kṛṣṇa Chandra and many stories about he and his courtier Gopal Park. They show some of the roles of the brother. Even just prior to the English invasion of India. One time there was a Brāhmaṇa walking down the street and the king was going on his horse and he saw the Brāhmaṇa was wearing a shali gram śiva around his neck and he went and he was passing school on the side of the road. So the king thought this is a great offense. He’s wearing Shaligam sila at the same time he’s passing school.

So then he arrested that Brāhmaṇa and said, what kind of Rahman are you? Why didn’t you take off your shalik al shila then tax your, do your nature call. Then you go and wait and take back shaling al Sheila. You’re not fulfilling that duties on the Barbara because you are not between the duties of a Brāhmaṇa. Our whole kingdom will become ruined. Everyone is going to suffer from your offenses. We need that all the people do their dupi properly. So because you are not doing your duty properly and the sun said, you are going to be hung Babidravana. He was very voluntary and so Gopal Bhar took some compassion on him. So he just intervened and said King for This Pravana, he was only the carrier of the salina. He was only that carrier. What do you call Kenya? This is a serious matter.

I don’t want any of your jesting. But sir, I missed this serious. This was only the carrier of the Salia. What do you mean at carrier? Sir, when you’re riding at your horse is your carrier. If your horse is as a stool, you go and take that. All right, Ramana, this time I am giving you a chance. But don’t repeat this again. Story. But Prabhupāda said that sometimes these new prayer stories reveal some little windows into many culture. That time they’re all true stories. Actually the time that king his duty was seeing everyone else is doing their duty. Not that the king would be the Babala and king would be the Vaishya and king would be the Śūdra. The king would be the king. The government would do the government thing. And they would see are the businessmen doing their job?

Are the priests and the teachers doing their job? Are the workers doing their job? That was their duty to see that everyone was seeing their role properly. And they had the power to enforce it. But not that they would assume the role. It was considered a dharmic fallout. And the king took the job of a Brahmara and became a beggar. King can never be a beggar. He cannot take charity. He can give charity, he can extract taxes. That’s why the whole Pudu Chakra war was fought. Because karma could not take another occupation in that society. They had to fulfill their role in society. So here Prithu Maharaj, he said successfully did his duty. And as a result he was worshipping the supreme Lord. He was doing sacrifices for the supreme Lord. He was able to realize the Vishnu.

And finally at the end of his life it explains he went back to the spiritual world. Parag Padav. So this was the perfection of life. To go back to the supreme absolute truth. To go back to Bhagat. When someone performs their occupational duties in a proper devotional attitude, a proper devote Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Then the ultimate result is we go back home, back to Godhead. After we lead our life, follow all the religious principles. And then again we have to take birth in the material world. What is the use similarity of personal is. We are a boy. She’s a boy. Brahma Jyoti, the prophet gives a very nice example. If you go high in the sky, we will be a rocket ship. But if you don’t reach another planet again you have to come back here.

Similarly, they’re going in the Brahma Jyoti but they’re not reaching the Vaikuṇṭha planet. So again they come back down into this material world. They are now are able to stay in that Prabha Joti indefinitely. Eventually we have to come down. Just like you can’t stay in the outer space forever. Sooner or later you want to land on a solid ground. So the devotees, they are not interested in the Brahmachyoti. They go beyond Brahmachyuti and go straight to Nabai Kutcher. That’s because during our right time we have already developed reawakened our relationship with Kṛṣṇa through devotional service. This is not some minor thing of life which we should relegate to the last period of our life. We cannot extend together honorary PhD like ajavil and the last breath in life and thoroughly remember Kṛṣṇa. We need to cultivate the Kṛṣṇa consciousness throughout our life.

As we said last night, Komarav Acharya Dagyog even from the beginning of life, from five years of age. This is a very important thing to understand. Especially India. There’s this common belief that Madi should do Kṛṣṇa consciousness Bhakti Yoga until they’re about ready to, as we say, kick the bucket. Until they’re about ready to leave their body. That’s already too late. This is a culmination. We need to do our whole life Preachu Maharaj from the moment we are so. And prior to that he was always performing sacrifice Sakya Mai Vishnu. We need to perform sacrifice to Vishnu throughout life. Whether one is Brāhmaṇa, Shakriya, Maisha or Śūdra. We all need to perform the sacrifice previously like kings, they would perform gigantic sacrifices like Astroveda. So even the governments are beggars. Practically speaking, they’re paupers. They don’t have enough money to pay their own bills.

Even a big government like America has got trillions and trillions of dollars deficit budget. They are simply paying their bill by printing the paper. They don’t have the money. So this way the governments are rolling out because they don’t. They’re not able to balance it. So what to expect? They don’t have actually the situation to perform big sacrifices like they did before. Of course they’re performing so many big exhibition. Voyages to the moon. So called voyages to the moon or other planets. The Voyager they are sent to other solar system. They say it should reach there at 25,000 years. It’s a projected example date of arrival in the next solar system. So you can find out what is going on in the other parts of the universe. This is their solution for understanding what the universe is. Everybody should hold their breath.

Only 25,000 years. We’re not going to live hardly a hundred. Whether there will be anyone to receive the message, whether the radio will break down or not. If we want to know what is the universe, it’s best to read the Vedas. You don’t have to wait 25,000 years. These are still here from 5,000 years ago. They give us an insight into the history of the universe, into the history of the whole of this planet, as well as what is the nature of the whole universe. But this way, what’s happening is that people get misled. So at least we don’t want to offend anyone, we don’t criticize anyone. But we have to speak whatever the Shastra says. If that doesn’t fit someone else’s idea, then they can also speak to a Shasta. They anything we’re saying is wrong.

Because whatever we do, we have to guide it going to the Shastra. Otherwise we will be in a wrong pen. You see, we need a proper guidance. It.

(Side B of the Cassette)

I told before the story about a blind man who was being led by the cow. You might remember there was one blind man and he was being led. Actually he was wanting to visit his father in law’s house. So he was going along the way. But he was finding it hard to find a way. So he was asking people how to get to my father in law’s house. So on person he asked was a cower boy. He said oh yes, I know your father in law very well. I have one of his cows and I am regularly taking care of the cow for your father in law. Oh editor, please take me to his house. So now how can I take you? I am. The cows will go off here and there.

I have to take care of my cows and how will I get there? Ice lying is very hard for me to find a way. So okay, look here. This cow belonged to your father in law. Very good. You just hang on the tail of the cow and the cow will leave you. Alright. Why not? So the man, he would hold on to, whatever you don’t let go of the tail of the cow whole life. So he grabbed onto the treehouse. I call the blindness. So the cow, who is this fellow who’s holding out my tail? So the cow became angry and gave him a kick. When he got a kick, oh he pulled back. When he pulled the tail of the cow became frightened and round. And then he.

He’s being pulled and the cow goes into the forest and there’s all the fork whipping his clothes, whipping him behind the cow. The cow goes over the rock. He’s getting his bruised and injured all over. They still holding on the cow. Finally the cow goes to the house. The servant of his father asked him who is this man holding on a cow jail or my nestor. He must be a co to teeth. Chore, chore. He starts screaming out. He’s just smashing it. So the poor man, he gets ripped, cut, bruised, beat and finding the father in law. What happened please is my son in law completely. But the moral of the story is we need a proper guide.

If we don’t need a proper guide, if we are not guided by proper guru, not guided by proper Vishastrika knowledge, by the example of great devotees. Then what happens is we are like a blind and fooled by the cow. We just follow anybody blindly. Then we get misled and we suffer so much inconvenience. Spiritual task should be very smooth. If we have proper guide, proper guru, we are following the shastra. Then we can avoid so many difficulties. But if we are just pulled around following some improper guide. They like to blind and pull by a cow will be ripped and cut and bruised and beaten in so many ways will be forced to suffer. So therefore it’s very important to find the power of guide than to follow the process given by Shastra. And then one can very easily reach Kṛṣṇa. It’s not difficult.

Here. Sanctions wants to let everyone get back to Kṛṣṇa very easily. In this angel telling it’s not difficult. We simply have to chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare. Upanishad. This verse is mentioned there’s 16 names is especially the means of purification from all the contamination of Kali Yuga. There is no better alternative given in all the Vedas. For this age of this simple process is very sublime. We may say this cherry Hare Kṛṣṇa. No, the name of Kṛṣṇa is all powerful. The name of Kṛṣṇa can purify anything that we should know how powerful Kṛṣṇa’s made is. We cannot put any limit to that. Mosad which is simple, but it’s the most powerful. Sometimes people are very sick. They need injection, very instant strong medicine. Or they have to take some very strong medicine. So this is also encapsulated form.

You just take it very easy. Hare Kṛṣṇa, everything is inside. It’s not difficult. It’s condensed in Pancharatra or varmamuni and spiritual explain. All the yantras, all the tantras, all the mantras have been combined in that Hare Kṛṣṇa sound. This is how the Brahman. So by chanting you are getting the effects, multiple effects. But our mind is telling you that facility is there because now is the recession in Dharma. It’s an economic recession or hermit recession, depression. So to give a special opportunity for everyone. This Mahabharantra has given. The simple process is given. If we can even just concentrate on it, Kṛṣṇa will be very pleased. But it’s not that the process is new. The swara also used in Satya Yuga Akshaya was delivered by chanting in Darpa Yuga Jopudi started to cry the name of Kṛṣṇa. And Kṛṣṇa came and give her unlimited sign.

So all the Yuga Hanuman is always changing the name of Ram. So this process of Hariya is not a new process. But it is especially the process recommended for this age. And if we follow this process, I am going to chase the Mahatra instruction that we can very easily as he does experience.
