The following is an Evening Initiation Lecture given by His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami Mahārāja on May 13, 1992 – in Guayaquil, Ecuador.

Nam. In the Bhāgavatam it states that there are three births we go through. From the mother and father. The second is when we take a guru. Initiation birth by the guru. Before taking birth, we should already have accepted the guru until the tomar and be following his instructions. And this way the initiation is actually simply a formal confirmation of what has already been existing. A third birth is called Yagy Janma, For birth into the order of Brāhmaṇa, where one can perform yajna. To chant the secret mantras, One has to go through various preparatory rituals. And what we see is the mantra then from the guru, The. With a throat. Just like when we’re born, we have new parents. We are born with the guru that’s our father and he’s our father. And the scriptures are a mother.

So then whatever we do will also affect the guru. So the disciple promises to act for the interest of the guru, who is also acting only for the interest of Kṛṣṇa. In this way, Kṛṣṇa’s interest is served. The guru cannot use his disciples for some material purpose, Only for the survival and for Kṛṣṇa’s service. We eat, we offer to Kṛṣṇa, everything we do is offered to Kṛṣṇa. So this way someone can become absorbed in the spiritual atmosphere. There’s a divine connection between the disciple, his disciples, gurus and all the previous gurus. Bona fide guru must be coming in a bona fide disciplic succession. This way the mercy comes down. And gives a force to the disciple. Gives force. I told the story about the doctor’s night. A boy with a boil on his back. There are different types of gurus.

There’s a story which is used as an example about a boy who had a boil on his back. He was crying, mother, Mommy gives me so much pain. So the mother called the elder sister of the boy. And together they put cool leaves around the boil. And the sister started to blow. So he was feeling some relief. But still, after a very short time, again the pain started. Here, Mommy is hurting me again. So then the brother of the mother came. He was this. The boy’s uncle had been visiting the Far East, China, Tibet, Thailand. He had learned about various philosophies. Buddhism, Taoism, Buddhismo. So the mother asked him, is there a solution for my boy? Stop rain. Don’t listen. Yes, I have the solution. No problem at all. No more boil, no more. No more pain, no more peace, death. Wonderful mother.

She didn’t appreciate. No, I was looking for another solution. Thank you, but that’s all right. So then the Husband came. He saw the problem. He went to get a doctor, specialist. But a doctor came. He saw the whole situation. Pull out his surgical knife. The boy saw the knife in his hand. No, no. He’s gonna kill me. No, no. Don’t let him kill me. I don’t want to die by this doctor’s hand. Let me die any other way. I won’t be killed by this doctor. No, no. The doctor was not going to kill the boy. Another doctor went. He lanced the boil and took out all the bad pus and blood. He put the antiseptic. He bands himself to boil. And the boy felt relief. In no time. The father went to the doctor and said, thank you, But please forgive us.

My boy was very offensive against you. He was abusing you with his harsh words. The doctor said, it’s part of our business. Sometime we had to hear these things. Doesn’t matter. Implemented parties in Western tric. I wanted to help the boy. I am glad he’s healthy. Thank you. So then the father. So this was a story. Now there’s three kinds of gurus. Were there. So what kind of guru is the mother? She was blowing in the leaves. She was Karma Kandi. She is giving a material fruitive path. She just implemented materialista, temporary relief. But again the pain comes. This is like telling someone when you are in difficulty. You just enjoy and you forget about it. But again the problem comes. It’s not a cure. Then there’s the uncle who said, kill the boy. What kind of guru was he? Yes, he was impersonalist.

They say you merge into the light. This is like committing a suicide. You end your individual existence. End it all. There will be peace. Not the real solution. Then there’s a doctor. Who is the doctor? What type of guru? He’s a bona fide guru. Coming in at the disciplic succession. He knows know how to cure the disease and save the patient. This is like the modified Vaishnava guru. Who delivered their disciples from the cycle of reincarnation. Sometimes despite that boy was criticizing. Sometimes people criticize the bona fide gurus. Then when asked, sometime they see actually all they’re doing is helping people. Like that. People used to doubt the Kṛṣṇa conscious movement. But now intelligent people are understanding how we’re just helping people. Just like in Russia. They were criticizing. Now they’re saying Hare Kṛṣṇa is doing so much service for the society.

So we all need a bona fide guru who can cure our material disease. So taking initiation is when someone has decided to formally accept the guru. We can first accept the guru informally and follow his teachings as a Shiksha disciple. Some people are taking the shelter of the guru and some are taking initiation from the guru. If we take shelter the guru, we can change. Once we take initiation, there’s no change. As long as the guru is properly situated. This is a very happy moment. Because people taking a new birth, this means they’re now on the path back to home, back to Godhead. Also. This fire sacrifice is a very special sacrifice which we use for these special occasions. Like weddings and the casamiedmo. So the Lord himself is brought in the fire. We put the grains in the mouth. Fire is a witness.

So here there’s the fire, there’s the deities. There’s so many Vaishnavas, the Guru, the ten directions. You see Istan Puego, the idades, the Guru, those Vaishnavas, that’s dies directiones. So many visitors and other devotees. So here we for so many people, so many important personalities, one is taking serious vows. Everyone can pray to Kṛṣṇa to give them blessings, give them strength, So they can follow this path and reach the goal. Had always recommended that people should follow this process. We discussed this morning. It’s not difficult. We simply have to give up materialism and take to our spiritual life. If it’s late, we will end here, the discussion. Forward and pay the obeisances. Then we give them. After taking the vow, we give a new spiritual name. This is voluntary. Nobody has to do this. It’s complete voluntarium.

If you don’t want to don’t have to come. 16. One. Gar. Dancing. It.
