Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 8.200
nijānande nāce mahāprabhu viśvambhara
caraṇera tāla śuni ati manohara
Translation: As Mahāprabhu Viśvambhara danced in His own ecstasy, the movement of His feet sounded most enchanting.
Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Viśvambhara Mahāprabhu, He was dancing in His own ecstasy and the sound of His feet, the rhythm which was very enchanting.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 8.201
bhagavat-dāsya vā bhaktisukhera mahimā o bhaktyanabhijñera nindā—
bhāva-bhare mālā nāhi rahaye galāya
chiṇḍiyā paḍaye giyā bhakatera pāya
Translation: Due to the Lord's absorption in ecstasy, His garland did not remain on His neck but scattered at the feet of the devotees.
Jayapatākā Swami: Due to the Lord's absorption in spiritual ecstasy, the flower garland didn’t remain on His neck and broken in pieces and fell at the feet of the devotees.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 8.202
kati gelā garuḍera ārohaṇa-sukha
kati gelāśaṅkha-cakra-gadā-padma-rūpa
Translation: Where did the happiness of riding on Garuḍa go? Where did the form holding conch, disc, club, and lotus go?
Jayapatākā Swami: So, where did the happiness of riding on Garuḍa go? Where did the form of the lord as carrying the conch shell, Sudarśana cakra, the mace, and the lotus go?
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 8.203
kothāya rahila sukha-ananta-śayana
dāsya-bhāve dhuli luṭi' karaye rodana
Translation: Where did the happiness of lying on the bed of Ananta go? The Lord now cried and rolled on the ground in the mood of a servant.
Jayapatākā Swami: Lying on the snake-bed, Anantadeva, where did that happiness go? The Lord absorbed in the mood of a servitor, he cried and rolled on the ground in ecstasy. So, Kṛṣṇa has His own unique pleasures, riding on Garuḍa or carrying the four handed form of Cakra, Gada, Padma, the lotus and conch shell and lying on the Ananta Śeṣa. But in Lord Caitanya, Lord Gaurāṅga’s avatāra He’s in the mood of a devotee. And He’s enjoying the mood of Rādhārāṇī, of devotee. And we should rather than being envious of the Lord, we cannot be the Lord, we should understand that being a devotee is a very special situation. And even the Lord, He was expressed His ecstasy in the mood of a devotee does, Gaurāṅga Mahāprabhu. So, let us try to be feel devotees not try to be the Lord.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 8.204
kothāya rahila vaikuṇṭhera sukha-bhāra
dāsya-sukhe saba sukha pāsarila tā'ra
Translation: Where did the happiness of Vaikuṇṭha go? The Lord forgot all other happiness while tasting the happiness of a servant.
The Lord of Vaikuṇṭha tore apart the Vaijayantī garland around His neck and threw it at the feet of the devotees, He gave up the happiness of riding on the back of Garuḍa, He gave up holding weapons like the conch and disc, He gave up the happiness of sleeping on the bed of Ananta—now in His pastimes as Gaurasundara that Lord began to cry and roll on the ground while absorbed in the mood of a servant. He gave up the happiness derived from being the Lord and became absorbed in the happiness derived from being the servant.
Jayapatākā Swami: Where did the happiness of Vaikuṇṭha go? The Lord forgot all these happinesses and was absorbed in the mood of a servitor and enjoying that happiness, of a servant. So, the Lord of Vaikuṇṭha threw the Vaijayantī-māla which is around His neck. and tore it up and threw it at the feet of the devotees. He gave up the happiness of riding on the back of Garuḍa, of holding weapons like the conch and disc, etc., He gave up the happiness of lying on the bed of Anantadeva—now the Lord was enjoying pastimes as a devotee as Gaurasundara, He was rolling on the ground, absorbed in the mood of a servitor of the Lord. He gave up the happiness derived from being the Lord and became absorbed in the happiness derived from being the servitor.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 8.205
kati gela ramāra vadana-dṛṣṭi-sukha
virahī haiyā kānde tuli' bāhu-mukha
Translation: Where did the happiness of looking at the face of Ramā, the goddess of fortune, go? Now the Lord raised His arms and face and cried in separation.
Instead of looking at the face of Lakṣmī in His capacity as the enjoyer of conjugal mellows, the Lord raised His face and arms and began to cry, being merged in the ocean of separation.
Jayapatākā Swami: Where did the happiness of glancing at the lotus face of Ramādevī, the goddess of fortune, go? Rather the Lord was absorbed in separation and crying with His arms raised and His face looking upward. So, Lord Caitanya, in His mood as, Kṛṣṇa as Nārāyaṇa, He can glance at the goddess of fortune, He was, (the enjoyer? 10:07), the Lord of the conjugal mellow instead He became immersed in the mellow of being a devotee. And He was submerged in the ocean of separation, crying for Kṛṣṇa.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 8.206-207
śaṅkara-nārada-ādi yā'ra dāsya pāñāsar
vaiśvarya tiraskari' bhrame dāsa hañā
sei prabhu āpanāra dante tṛṇa kari'
dāsya-yoga māge saba-sukha parihari'
Translation: Great personalities like Śiva and Nārada give up their opulence and wander about as servants of the Supreme Lord, who now gave up all happiness, took straw between His teeth, and begged for devotional service.
That worshipable Lord in whose service great personalities like Śiva and Nārada are engaged, after giving up their respective opulence, now took straw between His teeth out of humility and, after giving up all happiness as the object of worship, begged for devotional service.
Jayapatākā Swami: Great personalities like Śiva and Nārada, they are in the mood of servitors. They give up all their opulences and they wander in the mood of a devotee. The Lord that they are worshipping, He also took straw in His teeth, and He is begging for the blessing of pure devotional service, giving up all His happiness as Lord.
I was hearing today, how in Jhārikhaṇḍa, there is a famous Śiva temple. Śiva was in Navadvīpa, Mayapur Dhāma before. He was taken by Rāvaṇa and he left him in Jhārikhaṇḍa. In the place called, (12:40). So, there are 10 million people they say, 10 million people come in the month of Śravaṇa to worship that Lord Śiva. So much opulence he has but he gives all that up and just chants the names of the Lord and wants the mercy of the Lord. And the Lord, He gives up all His opulence to just taste the ecstasy of being a pure devotee of the Lord.
Rather than being the object of devotional service, He takes what is like (? 13:32) to be the giver of devotional service. Haribol!
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 8.208
hena dāsya-yoga chāḍi' āra yebā cāya
amṛta chāḍiyā yena viṣa lāgi' dhāya
Translation: One who gives up such service and desires something else is like one who gives up nectar and desires poison.
Purport: One who in spite of seeing the recent example of Gaurasundara gives up the path of devotional service and proudly becomes inclined to attain one of the four types of liberation beginning with sālokya, or residing on the same planet as the Lord, is like one who gives up nectar to drink poison. In the Skanda-Purāṇa it is stated:
vāsudevaṁ parityajya
yo 'anya-devam upāsate
tyaktvāmṛtaṁ sa mūḍhātmā
bhuṅkte halāhalaṁ viṣam
“A foolish person who gives up the worship of Vāsudeva and engages in the worship of the demigods is giving up nectar to drink poison.”
It is stated in the Mahābhārata:
yas tu viṣṇuṁ parityajya
mohād anyam upāsate
sa hema-rājim utsṛjya
pāṁśu-rāśiṁ jighṛkṣati
“A person who out of illusion gives up the worship of the all-pervading Lord Viṣṇu and worships other demigods gives up heaps of gold to accept heaps of ashes.”
It is further described in the Nārada-pañcarātra (2.7.7):
śrī-harer-bhakti-dāsyaṁ ca
sarvam ukteḥ paraṁ mune
vaiṣṇavānām abhimataṁ
sārāt sāraṁ parāt param
“The devotional service of Lord Hari is most enchanting and the best of all forms of liberation. O great sage, it is the essence of all conclusions. This is the opinion of the Vaiṣṇavas.”
In the Hari-bhakti-kalpa-latikā it is said:
nāsti dāsyāt paraṁśreyo
nāsti dāsyāt paraṁ padam
nāsti dāsyāt paro labho
nāsti dāsyāt paraṁ sukham
“There is nothing more auspicious than Lord Hari's service. There is no situation better than Lord Hari's service. There is nothing better to be gained than Lord Hari's service. There is no happiness higher than Lord Hari's service.”
Jayapatākā Swami: Someone who gives up the desire to serve the Lord and instead wants something else, it is like someone who gives up the nectar of immortality, and instead takes poison.
The devotees, they don’t even want the four types of liberation, like sālokya, sāmīpya, sārṣṭi and sārūpya, they want to serve the Lord. Lord Gaurasundara, He showed how this devotional service to the Lord is a special gift, special attainment. We shouldn’t want anything else. As long as we can have service of the Lord, other types of liberation can be accepted. But we don’t want some liberation which doesn’t have service to the Lord. Haribol!
To give up service of the Lord for these other liberations, or other things is like taking poison.
Skanda-Purāṇa states in Sanskrit:
vāsudevaṁ parityajya
yo 'anya-devam upāsate
tyaktvāmṛtaṁ sa mūḍhātmā
bhuṅkte halāhalaṁ viṣam
HARIBOL!
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 8.209
se vā kene bhāgavata paḍe vā paḍāya
bhaktira prabhāva nāhi yāhāra jihvāya
Translation: Why does a person recite or teach Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, when there is no glory of devotional service on his tongue?
The recitation of those who have no knowledge about the beauty of devotional service yet proudly recite Śrīmad Bhāgavatam with a desire to become the master is useless.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, this verse derides someone recite the Bhāgavatam, if they don’t have any devotion for the Lord, any bhakti on their tongue. In Navadvīpa there were many paṇḍitas who liked to recite the Bhāgavatam but they gave impersonal presentation or conclusions. So, like this, Devananda Paṇḍita was speaking on Bhāgavatam but he had no idea of devotional service for the Lord. Reading Bhāgavatam and desiring to be a master is useless. We should read the Bhāgavatam with the desire to be a servitor of the Lord.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 8.210
śāstrera nā jāni' marma adhyāpanā kare
gardabhera prāya yena śāstra bahi' mare
Translation: Those who teach the scriptures without knowing their purport are simply carrying the burden of the scriptures like asses.
Jayapatākā Swami: Someone reads the scriptures without understanding their purpose and their purport are like simply carrying the burden of the books on their backs like asses. There is no use to it.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 8.211
ei-mata śāstra bahe, artha nāhi jāne
adhama sabhāya artha-adhama vākhāne
Translation: Thus, they carry the burden of the scriptures without knowing their purpose. They teach despicable meanings to lowly audiences.
Another reading of sabhāya, or “audiences,” is svabhāva, or “nature.”
Proud teachers of Śrīmad Bhāgavatam who display their pride by presenting nondevotional conclusions are like asses who simply carry burdens without understanding the scriptural statements. They uselessly labor to teach and study the scriptures. The purport explained by such professional nondevotee reciters of Śrīmad Bhāgavatam to unqualified audiences is completely abominable. In the Padma Purāṇa (Uttara-khaṇḍa, Chapter Sixty-three) it is stated:
viprair bhāgavatī vārtā
gehe gehe jane jane
kāritā dhana-lobhena
kathā-sāras tato gataḥ
“Brāhmaṇas will describe the topics of Kṛṣṇa's pastimes in Śrīmad Bhāgavatam from house to house in order to accumulate wealth, therefore their audience will not achieve devotional service, which is the essence of hearing such topics.” In the Manu-saṁhitā (12.115) it is stated:
yaṁ vadanti tamo-bhūtā
mūrkhādharmam atad-vidaḥtat
pāpaṁśatadhā bhūtvā
tad-vaktṛn anugacchati
“Those who instruct religious principles in spite of being foolish, in the mode of ignorance, or ignorant of religion incur one hundred times more sin than their audience.”
The Manu-saṁhitā (3.156) also states:
bhṛtak-ādhyāpako yaś ca
bhṛtak-ādhyāpitas tathā
śūdra-śiṣyo guruś caiva
vāg duṣṭaḥ kuṇḍa-golakau
“Those who charge fees for teaching, those who pay fees for studying, those who are disciples of śūdras, those who are spiritual masters of śūdras, those who speak harshly, those who are illegitimate sons of mothers whose actual husband is still alive, and those who are illegitimate sons of mothers whose husband is dead should not be allowed to participate in śrāddha ceremonies or other Vedic rituals.” In the Padma Purāṇa it is stated:
avaiṣṇava-mukhodgīrṇaṁ
pūtaṁ hari-kathāmṛtam
śravaṇaṁ naiva kartavyaṁ
sarpocchiṣṭaṁ yathā payaḥ
“No one should hear or take lessons from a person who is not a Vaiṣṇava. Even if he speaks about Kṛṣṇa, such a lesson should not be accepted, for it is like milk touched by the lips of a serpent.” It is stated in the Brahma-vaivarta Purāṇa:
śūdrāṇāṁ sūpakārī ca
yo harer nāma-vikrayīyo
vidyā-vikrayī vipro
viṣahīno yathoragaḥ
“One who is devoid of devotional service to Kṛṣṇa, who cooks for śūdras, who charges money to initiate disciples in chanting the holy names, or who lectures on the scriptures for pay is like a poisonless snake.” In the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam (7.13.8) it is stated:
na śiṣyān anubadhnīta
granthān naivābhyased bahūn
na vyākhyām upayuñjīta
nārambhān ārabhet kvacit
“A sannyāsī must not present allurements of material benefits to gather many disciples, nor should he unnecessarily read many books or give discourses as a means of livelihood. He must never attempt to increase material opulences unnecessarily.” In the Caitanya-caritāmṛta (Madhya 24.314) the following ancient statement of Lord Śiva is quoted:
ahaṁ vedmi śuko vetti
vyāso vetti na vetti vābhaktyā
bhāgavataṁ grāhyaṁ
na buddhyā na ca ṭīkayā
“I may know; Śukadeva Gosvāmī, the son of Vyāsadeva, may know; and Vyāsadeva may know or may not know the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam. On the whole, Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, the spotless Purāṇa, can be learned only through devotional service, not by material intelligence, speculative methods or imaginary commentaries.”
Jayapatākā Swami: This way, they carry the scriptures and they don’t know the meaning. They don’t understand the purpose. So, they are most fallen and they speak foolish meanings to the despicable, to the lowly audiences. So, some non-devotee commentators on the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam present their ideas which are offensive and fallen, to the lowly audiences. So, such inappropriate teachings by unqualified, non-devotee teachers, is abominable and useless endeavor. The Padma Purāṅa states at follows:
viprair bhāgavatī vārtā
gehe gehe jane jane
kāritā dhana-lobhena
kathā-sāras tato gataḥ
“Brāhmaṇas will describe the topics of Kṛṣṇa's pastimes in Śrīmad Bhāgavatam from house to house in order to accumulate wealth, therefore their audience will not achieve devotional service, which is the essence of hearing such topics.”
In the Manu-saṁhitā (12.115) it is stated:
yaṁ vadanti tamo-bhūtā
mūrkhādharmam atad-vidaḥtat
pāpaṁśatadhā bhūtvā
tad-vaktṛn anugacchati
“Those who instruct religious principles in spite of being foolish, in the mode of ignorance, or ignorant of religion incur one hundred times more sin than their audience.”
The Manu-saṁhitā (3.156) also states:
bhṛtak-ādhyāpako yaś ca
bhṛtak-ādhyāpitas tathā
śūdra-śiṣyo guruś caiva
vāg duṣṭaḥ kuṇḍa-golakau
“Those who charge fees for teaching, those who pay fees for studying, those who are disciples of śūdras, those who are spiritual masters of śūdras, those who speak harshly, those who are illegitimate sons of mothers whose actual husband is still alive, and those who are illegitimate sons of mothers whose husband is dead should not be allowed to participate in śrāddha ceremonies or other Vedic rituals.”
So, there are various quotations from different scriptures, how one should be a Vaiṣṇava, proper Vaiṣṇava to give lessons from the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam so that people can get devotional service. And those who are something else, they are not qualified to give such lectures. We are trying to present what Śrīla Prabhupāda has given us, in pure devotion, so that people can engage their activities in the devotional service of the Lord.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 8.212
vede bhāgavate kahe,—dāsya baḍa dhana
dāsya lāgi' ramā-aja-bhavera yatana
Translation: In the Vedas and Bhāgavatam, it is said, “Service to the Lord is the greatest treasure.” Lakṣmī, Brahmā, and Śiva endeavor for such service.
Jayapatākā Swami: In the Vedas and in the Bhāgavatam, they say “the greatest treasure is service to the Lord.” In order to achieve devotional service, Lakṣmī, Brahmā and Lord Śiva, they carefully endeavor with such service.
So, we can understand that Lord Caitanya, although He is Kṛṣṇa Himself, He is endeavoring for devotional service. He is chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa, begging for bhakti. It is not an ordinary thing. It is very, very esoteric, it shows us how great is devotional service. We should try for devotional service. That is the real wealth and Lord Caitanya, although He is the Lord, He personally tried to achieve that devotional service.
We have this song by Locanadāsa Ṭhākura:
parama koruṇa, pahū dui jana
nitāi gauracandra
saba avatāra-sāra śiromaṇi
kevala ānanda-kanda
Although the Lord, He is the Lord, pahū dui jana – both Nitāi and Gauracandra are Lords, but They are coming down as devotees. And They are giving the process of devotional service freely. So, that is described as kevala ānanda-kanda – it is simply the blissful process. Other avatāras like Lord Narasimhadeva, He was very angry, He saved His devotee Prahlāda, He killed Hiraṇyakaśipu; Lord Varāhadeva, He killed the demon Hiraṇyākṣa that threw the earth out of orbit, to the bottom of the Garbhodaka ocean; different avatāras came. But of all the avatāras, Lord Caitanya, He came, to tell us, He begged for devotional service. So He gave us the process which is simply bliss – chanting and dancing, taking kṛṣṇa-prasādam, rendering devotional service for Kṛṣṇa and studying the teachings of Lord Kṛṣṇa – Bhagavad-gītā, Śrīmad Bhāgavatam from devotees. We want to hear from devotees, we don’t want to hear from non-devotees who give some distorted meanings. So, Lord Caitanya, His avatāra is very special.
Haribol!
Thus ends the Chapter -
Happiness of The Lord and Glories of Devotional Service

Is it drizzling? Mercy of Lord Caitanya! One Bengali question.
Question: Dear Gurudeva, PAMRO, I have a girl of marriageable age and she is under your shelter but not initiated as yet. There is a discussion of an alliance of her with a boy from the Gauḍīya Maṭha. The boy is not initiated as yet. The boy’s father’s wish is that their daughter-in-law take their Gauḍīya Maṭha guru as her guru. What should I do in this situation? –Your spiritual son, Bāla Gaura dāsa, Ekacakrā, Birbhum.
Jayapatākā Swami: See me after the class or see me tomorrow morning. It is not a philosophical question; it is a personal question.
For blessings: Hare Kṛṣṇa Guru Mahārāja, PAMRO. One month ago, I finished the Bhakti-śāstrī course in Russian Vaiṣṇava Academy in Vṛndāvana, and after they made, offer to me to teach Bhakti-śāstrī in my region in Russia. I am looking for your blessings. –Acyuta Bhagavān dāsa, Cilyabinsk.
Jayapatākā Swami: If your authorities in Russia want you to teach and you want to do so, I don’t see any problem. You have all my blessings. If there are any problems I should see, please tell me.
Sundara Caitanya dāsa from China is inspired by Guru Mahārāja’s lecture yesterday. He would like to sponsor 100 Bhagavad-gītās in Guru Mahārāja’s name, in order to help Guru Mahārāja to pay his debts to Śrīla Prabhupāda!
Collections for TOVP E: Radhānatha Chinese disciple Rs. 20, 000. Chan Ar Bhau Rs. 10,000. Harivallabhā dd Rs. 5,000, Śyāma Kuṇḍa dd Rs. 1,000. Haribol!
Question: Guru Mahārāja, Please accept my respectful obeisances. I request you if possible to share the most beautiful and most impactful moment you shared Guru Mahārāja with Śrīla Prabhupāda!
Jayapatākā Swami: I don’t have pastimes categorized in that manner! If I remember, I may just come up with some idea based on where I am! Here on the roof, I used to walk with Śrīla Prabhupāda. Sometimes he would stop and he would see a group of ants migrating from one side of the roof to the other side. There was a queen ant and some of the other ants were carrying eggs and we were looking down at them. Śrīla Prabhupāda said, that just as we look at the ants and think how insignificant they are, similarly, the devas in the higher planets are looking down at us and thinking, human beings, how insignificant they are! But by their calculation, we live for a few months. But by our calculation, the ants they may live for a few months or few days! In that corner, I had that pastime with Śrīla Prabhupāda (Guru Mahārāja said gesturing with his hand out).
One day Śrīla Prabhupāda was walking, he looked up at the moon and he was saying that they say that the moon is just dust, how is it reflecting so much light? Like that. Sometimes he would stay on the roof, in the hot weather he would sleep on the roof. Most times he would be in his room downstairs. I had so many pastimes. I would see Śrīla Prabhupāda every day! So, which is the most eventful? Hard to say! Some things were very funny! Somethings were very serious! Somethings were very blissful! I mean, when Śrīla Prabhupāda was attacked by a snake and he called for me to help him, that was very intense! Sometimes I came into his room and offered my obeisances and said that I am most fallen, he looked at me and said, you are not the most anything! Which pastime was the most – hard to say, everything with Śrīla Prabhupāda was most, intense and most wonderful!
That is a picture on the roof (looking at the computer HG Śyāmarasika dāsa showed him).
Devotees leaving were seeking Guru Mahārāja’s blessings.
Jayapatākā Swami: kṛṣṇe matir astu– may you remain in Kṛṣṇa consciousness

So, we get to sleep in one of the holy islands, to get the blessings of Lord Jagannātha, so we can attend two maṅgalāratis there. We can do the program and also HG Yaśomatī Mātājī a disciple of Śrīla Prabhupāda, will also be conducting the japa retreat. And all the sannyāsīs will be there. Śrīla Jayapatākā Svāmī will most probably come on Sunday. You can stay there or you can come from here. There is facility for 50 people to stay there. Small luggage only.
