Under the Section: The Lord’s Attempt to Go to Vṛndāvana
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā, 16.210
‘śāntipurācārya’-gṛhe aiche āilā
śacī-mātā mili’ tāṅra duḥkha khaṇḍāilā
Translation: After leaving Kuliyā, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu visited the house of Advaita Ācārya at Śāntipura. It was there that the Lord’s mother, Śacīmātā, met Him and was thus relieved of her great unhappiness.
Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya 20.25
teṣāṁ teṣāṁ vāsarāṇāṁ samūhe
yāmo lokā lakṣa-koṭyaḥ samīyuḥ
ācāryo’sau pratyahaṁ tās tathaiva
dravyair bhūyaḥ prīṇayāmāsa harṣāt
Translation: On all those days, at every hour, thousands of people came. Advaita in joy pleased all of them each day with various articles.
Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya 20.26
anyedyuḥ sa śrī-navadvīpa-bhūmeḥ
pāre-gaṅgaṁ paścime kvāpi deśe
śrīmān sarva-prāṇināṁ tat-tad-aṅgair
netrānandaṁ samyag āgatya tene
Translation: One day Gauracandra went across the Gaṅgā from Navadvīpa and in a place to the west spread bliss to all beings by his limbs.
Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya had gone to Kuliyā which was across the river, from the ancient city of Navadvīpa. Now the city of Navadvīpa is on the west side, because the British established the railway on the western side.
Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya 20.27
kiṁ vā mūkaḥ kiṁ nu paṅguḥ kim andhaḥ
kiṁ vā vṛddhaḥ kiṁ śiśuḥ kiṁ striyo vā
ye ye sarve śrī-navadvīpa-bhūsthāḥ
prīty-udrekāt te ta evātha jagmuḥ
Translation: Mute, lame, blind, old, young and woman, all persons living in Navadvīpa came with great affection.
Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya 20.28
yāvat tasthau tatra gaurāṅga-candras
tāvat sarve sarvato lakṣa-koṭyaḥ
gāḍhotkaṇṭhā-nirbharārtāḥ samīyur
draṣṭuṁ taṁ te kiṁ striyaḥ kiṁ pumāṁsaḥ
Translation: As long as Gauracandra remained there, thousands and thousands of people, both men and women, filled with intense longing, came from all places to see him.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, when the citizens of Navadvīpa heard that Lord Caitanya had returned, they crossed over the river to see the Lord then they were all blessed by Lord Caitanya
Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya 20.29
madhye madhye tatra loka-pracāyair
atyudvigno bhūyaso’ntardadhāti
kintūtkaṇṭhā vardhate gāḍha-gāḍhaṁ
teṣāṁ teṣāṁ krandatāṁ mukta-kaṇṭham
Translation: After some time Gauracandra became disturbed by all the people and disappeared. But their longing increased and they cried loudly.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, when Lord Caitanya left the people felt intense separation.
Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya 20.30
evaṁ nītvā tatra nātho dināni
prīty-udrekāt pañcaṣāṇi krameṇa
netrānandaṁ sarva-lokasya tadvaṁs
tais tair divyaṁ deśam eva pratasthe
Translation: Out of affection he stayed in the village five or six days, giving happiness to their eyes. They then returned to their own places.
Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya 20.31
kañcid gopīnātha-śīti-prasiddhaṁ
gopīnāthe śeta ity anvayena
tasmin deśe kvāpi gauracandraḥ
premāviṣṭo vīkṣya śaśvan nananda
Translation: Seeing a place called Gopīnātha-śi, the place where Gopīnātha sleeps, Gauracandra became overwhelmed with prema, and rejoiced constantly.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Caitanya was filled with intense prema, He would manifest all the symptoms and He would be completely absorbed in His internal ecstasies.
Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya 20.32
kālindīye tīra eva prayātuṁ
gāḍhotkaṇṭhaḥ paścime kvāpi gatvā
pratyāvṛtto bhūya eṣa sva-citte
kiṁ vālokya svardhunī-tīram āyāt
Translation: Desiring to go to the Yamunā, he went west, but then turned around. Considering in his mind, he went to the Gaṅgā.
Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya 20.33
tat-tad-deśe bhūya eva prakāmaṁ
sthitvā kṛtvā dīrgha-dīrghānukampām
śrī-nīlādrau bhūya eva pratasthe
citraṁ citraṁ tasya tat tac caritram
Translation: Staying at that place for a good amount time, he gave great mercy and then returned to Purī. His character was most amazing.
Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya 20.34
tat-tad-vyājāt svardhunī-tīram āyāt
yatra śrīmāṁś citram evāvatīrṇaḥ
netrānandaṁ sarva-lokasya kṛtvā
nīlādri-stha-prītaye bhūya āsīt
Translation: On this pre Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā, 16. (mercy), He went to the Gaṅgā, where He was born, and having given bliss to all people’s eyes, again went to please the people of Purī.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Caitanya had gone along the Ganges upto Rāmakeli and had His pastimes with Rūpa and Sanātana there.
Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya 20.35
sthitvā tatra śrīmayo gauracandraḥ
kañcit kālaṁ bhūyo’dhvanaiva
kālindīyaṁ tīram eva pratasthe
vicchedārtāṁs tatra tāṁs tān vidhāya
Translation: Gauracandra stayed for some time in Purī and then departed for the bank of the Yamunā, giving pain of separation to the people of Purī.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, hearing the advice of Rūpa and Sanātana, that He should not go to Vṛndāvana with huge crowds of people, from there He returned to Jagannātha Purī .
Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya 20.36
rāmānandas tad-viyogādhi-pīḍā-
kṣīṇa-kṣīṇas tatyaje’sūn mahatma
vicchede syād yogyam etac caritraṁ
premnas tāvat tādṛśasyāsya nūnam
Translation: Pained by the separation, Rāmānanda Rāya became very thin and gave up his life airs. This is the nature of prema in separation.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Caitanya He gave the devotees the feelings of separation by His līlā.
Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya 20.37
sthitvā tatra dināni hanta katicid bhūyo’sitādrau prabhuḥ
śrīmān etya nananda nandayati ca smaitān ajasraṁ janān
evaṁ viṁśati-hāyanāntara-bhavāṁ yātrāṁ vilokyākhilāṁ
svaṁ dhāmātha jagāma kaiścid api taiḥ sārdhaṁ kṛpā-sāgaraḥ
Translation: Staying in Vṛndāvana for some days, the Lord again returned to Purī and gave unlimited bliss to the people there, as well as experiencing bliss himself. In this way for twenty years he observed all the festivals and then, along with his devotees, the ocean of mercy went to his abode.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, this is the short synopsis of His pastime.
Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya 20.37
premāmbhodhau jagad atiśaye majjayitvā sa bhūyo
vicchedāgnāv api ca vidadhe magnam atyanta-durge
citraṁ citraṁ tad api satataṁ prema-sindhur balīyān
āsīt ko’yaṁ śiva śiva mahān gauracandrānubhāvaḥ
Translation: The Lord submerged the universe in the ocean of prema, and then drowned the universe in the insurmountable fire of suffering in separation. What is most astonishing is that the inconceivable ocean of prema became constantly strong. This is the great power of Gauracandra.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Caitanya had predicted that His holy name would be sung in every town and village of the whole world, so we should see that the Lord's prediction is realized.
Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya 20.38
nānā-deśān nija-nija-janān evam ekatra kṛtvā
tān anyonyaṁ praṇaya-niviḍān kārayitvā prakāmam
tais taiḥ sārdhaṁ bata vilasito hanta gauḍotkaleṣu
svaṁ dhāmāsmin gatavati gatā bhūr viyogāgni-sindhau
Translation: Bringing people of various places together as his loyal devotees and making them full of concentrated love, he performed pastimes with them in Bengal and Orissa and, after going to his abode, put the world in an ocean of fire caused by separation.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Caitanya manifested His prema in Bengal and Orissa and the devotees were overwhelmed in pure love, and then He departed for His own abode. But He had predicted that He would send His senāpati bhakta to bring Kṛṣṇa consciousness to the rest of the world. So, His Divine Grace AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda was the person He predicted.
Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya 20.39
caturviṁśe tāvat prakaṭita-nija-prema-vivaśaḥ
prakāmaṁ sannyāsaṁ samakṛta navadvīpa-talataḥ
trivarṣaṁ ca kṣetrād api tata ito yann agamayat
tathā dṛṣṭvā yātrā vyanayad akhilā viṁśati-samāḥ
Translation: Mahāprabhu manifested his prema for twenty-four years. He accepted sannyāsa, left Navadvīpa and wandered here and there outside of Purī for three years, and then spent twenty years observing the festivals of Jagannātha.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, in total He had spent six years travelling and twenty four years as a gṛhastha and twenty four years as a sannyāsī.
Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya 20.40
itthaṁ catvāriṁśatā sapta-bhājā
śrī-gaurāṅgo hāyamānāṁ krameṇa
nānā-līlā-lāsyam āsādya bhūmau
krīḍan dhāma svaṁ tato’sau jagāma
Translation: In this way for forty-seven years Gaurāṅga performed his various pastimes, playing on earth, and then went to his abode.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, every avatāra has a particular līlā, Varāhadeva picked up the earth from the Garbhodaka ocean, Narasiṁhadeva showed His anger and delivered His devotee Prahlada and liberated Hiraṇyakaśipu, the king of the demons. So Lord Caitanya, His pastimes was to spread love of Kṛṣṇa and He did this to the Māyāvādī sannyāsī in Benares, to the Turkish Muslims and various other persons.
