The following is a Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Book Compilation given by His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami Mahārāja on November 20th, 2022 in Śrī Dhāma Māyāpur, India.

Hare Kṛṣṇa! Today's chapter is entitled as

Sanātana Gosvāmī Decides to Give Up His Body Under The Wheel Of Jagannātha Chariot

Śrī Gaurāṅga-līlā-smaraṇa-maṅgala-stotram
Text 66 Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura

Translation: By touching him, the Lord mercifully cured Sanātana Gosvāmī, who was afflicted with a disease of itching sores. The Lord also purified Sanātana of the desire to commit suicide. I meditate on Lord Gaura, the hero of Navadvīpa.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.1

sanātanake dehatyāga-saṅkalpa haite rakṣākārī gaurasundaraḥ—

vṛndāvanāt punaḥ prāptaṁ
śrī-gauraḥ śrī-sanātanam
deha-pātād avan snehāt
śuddhaṁ cakre parīkṣayā

Translation: When Sanātana Gosvāmī returned from Vṛndāvana, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu affectionately saved him from his determination to commit suicide. Then, after testing him, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu purified his body.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, this gives an introduction and synopsis to this chapter.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.3

rūpera purī haite gauḍe gamana, sanātanera vṛndāvana haite purīte āgamanaḥ—

nīlācala haite rūpa gauḍe yabe gelā
mathurā haite sanātana nīlācala āilā

Translation: When Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī returned from Jagannātha Purī to Bengal, Sanātana Gosvāmī went from Mathurā to Jagannātha Purī to see Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, somehow Srila Rūpa Gosvāmī and Srila Sanātana Gosvāmī crossed each other. So Rupa went back to Vṛndāvana via Bengal and Sanātana Gosvāmī came through another path to Nīlācala.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.4

jhārikhaṇḍa-pathe bahu kaṣṭa svīkāra kariyā purīte āgamanaḥ—

jhārikhaṇḍa-vanapathe āilā ekelā caliyā
kabhu upavāsa, kabhu carvaṇa kariyā

Translation: Sanātana Gosvāmī walked alone on the path through the Jhārikhaṇḍa forest in central India. Sometimes he fasted, and sometimes he would eat.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, there were two paths - one is by the Ganges that was taken by Rūpa Gosvāmī other is by the Jhārikhaṇḍa forest which is uninhabited for the most part, and that was taken by Sanātana Gosvāmī.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.5

bahirddarśane sanātanera sarvāṅge kaṇḍuyana dṛṣṭaḥ—

jhārikhaṇḍera jalera doṣe, upavāsa haite
gātre kaṇḍu haila, rasā paḍe khājuyāite

Translation: Because of bad water in the Jhārikhaṇḍa forest and because of fasting, Sanātana Gosvāmī contracted a disease that made his body itch. Thus he was afflicted with itching sores from which fluid oozed.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Sanātana Gosvāmī had a disease he contracted in the Jhārikhaṇḍa forest which caused sores to appear on his body which had oozing fluids

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.6

pathimadhye sanātanera nirveda o ātmadainyoktiḥ—

nirveda ha-ila pathe, karena vicāra
‘nīca-jāti, deha mora—atyanta asāra

Translation: In disappointment, Sanātana Gosvāmī considered, “I am of a low caste, and my body is useless for devotional service.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.7

jagannāthe gele tāṅra darśana nā pāimu
prabhura darśana sadā karite nārimu

Translation: “When I go to Jagannātha Purī, I shall not be able to see Lord Jagannātha, nor shall I always be able to see Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.

Jayapatākā Swami: Sanātana Gosvāmī underestimates the mercy of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.8

mandira-nikaṭe śuni tāṅra vāsā-sthiti
mandira-nikaṭe yāite mora nāhi śakti

Translation: “I have heard that the residential quarters of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu are near the temple of Jagannātha. But I shall not have the power to go near the temple.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Sanātana Gosvāmī is thinking all these things, on his way to Jagannātha temple, that he would not be able to see Lord Jagannātha, and he would not be able to see Lord Caitanya and he was becoming very hopeless.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.9

āpanāke prākṛta aśucijīva-jñāne maryādā-laṅghana-bhayaḥ—

jagannāthera sevaka phere kārya-anurodhe
tāṅra sparśa haile mora habe aparādhe

Translation: “The servants of Lord Jagannātha generally move about tending to their duties, but if they touch me I shall be an offender.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, we can see how Sanātana Gosvāmī had such humility he was worried about committing offense to the sevaites of Lord Jagannātha.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.10

purīte jagannātha-rathāgre prabhu-nṛtyakāle dehatyāga-saṅkalpaḥ—

tāte yadi ei deha bhāla-sthāne diye
duḥkha-śānti haya āra sad-gati pāiye

Translation: “Therefore if I sacrifice this body in a good place, my unhappiness will be mitigated and I shall attain an exalted destination.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Sanātana Gosvāmī was thinking that he would throw himself beneath the chariot wheel of Lord Jagannatha and thus achieve a higher destination.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.12

jagannātha ratha-yātrāya ha-ibena bahira
tāṅra ratha-cākāya chāḍimu ei śarīra

Translation: “During the Ratha-yātrā festival, when Lord Jagannātha comes out of the temple, I shall give up this body under the wheel of His car.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.12

mahāprabhura āge, āra dekhi’ Jagannātha
rathe deha chāḍimu,—ei parama-puruṣārtha’

Translation: “After seeing Lord Jagannātha, I shall give up my body under the wheel of the car in the presence of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. This will be the highest benediction of my life.”

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Sanātana Gosvāmī was calculating how he could achieve the highest result by leaving his body after seeing Lord Jagannath in the presence of Lord Caitanya.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.13

ṭhākura haridāsa-sthāne āgamanaḥ—

ei ta’ niścaya kari’ nīlācale āilā
loke puchi’ haridāsa-sthāne uttarilā

Translation: Having made this resolution, Sanātana Gosvāmī went to Nīlācala, where he asked directions from people and approached the residence of Haridāsa Ṭhākura.

Jayapatākā Swami: Since Haridāsa Ṭhākura was born in a non-Hindu family he was staying in a place away from the temple. Originally, Sanātana Gosvāmī although he was a brāhmaṇa, he had worked for the Nawab Hussain Shah. So then he was given a Muslim name, therefore he would not be considered to enter the temple.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.14

haridāsake praṇāma, haridāsera āliṅganaḥ—

haridāsera kailā teṅha caraṇa vandana
jāni’ haridāsa tāṅre kailā āliṅgana

Translation: He offered his respects to the lotus feet of Haridāsa Ṭhākura, who knew him and thus embraced him.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Haridāsa Ṭhākura knowing Sanātana Gosvāmī as a pure Vaiṣṇava, he embraced him.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.15

prabhucaraṇa-darśana-vyākula sanātanaḥ—

mahāprabhu dekhite tāṅra utkaṇṭhita mana
haridāsa kahe,—’prabhu āsibena ekhana’

Translation: Sanātana Gosvāmī was very eager to see the lotus feet of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Therefore Haridāsa Ṭhākura said, “The Lord is coming here very soon.”

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya would daily visit Haridāsa Ṭhākura and Sanātana Gosvāmī could see him if he waited there.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.16

prabhura āgamana:—

hena-kāle prabhu ‘upala-bhoga’ dekhiyā
haridāse milite āilā bhakta-gaṇa lañā

Translation: At that very moment, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, after visiting the temple of Jagannātha to see the offering of upala-bhoga [morning refreshments], came with His other devotees to see Haridāsa Ṭhākura.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.17

ubhayera prabhu-praṇāma, prabhura haridāsake āliṅganaḥ—

prabhu dekhi’ duṅhe paḍe daṇḍavat hañā
prabhu āliṅgilā haridāsere uṭhāñā

Translation: Seeing Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, both Haridāsa Ṭhākura and Sanātana Gosvāmī immediately fell flat like rods to offer obeisances. The Lord then lifted Haridāsa and embraced him.

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya was embracing Haridāsa Ṭhākura giving His mercy to Haridāsa Ṭhākura.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.18

sanātanera āgamane prabhura vismaya o prītiḥ—

haridāsa kahe,—’sanātana kare namaskāra’
sanātane dekhi’ prabhu hailā camatkāra

Translation: Haridāsa Ṭhākura said to Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, “Here is Sanātana Gosvāmī offering his obeisances.” Seeing Sanātana Gosvāmī, the Lord was greatly surprised.

Jayapatākā Swami: Suddenly seeing Sanātana Gosvāmī, Lord Caitanya became amazed to see him.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.19

nijapreṣṭha-bhaktavarake āliṅganārtha bhagavānera agragamana, sanātanera palāyana o dainyoktiḥ—

sanātane āliṅgite prabhu āgu hailā
pāche bhāge sanātana kahite lāgilā

Translation: When Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu came forward to embrace him, Sanātana backed away and spoke as follows.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.20

“more nā chuṅiha, prabhu, paḍoṅ tomāra pāya
eke nīca-jāti adhama, āra kaṇḍu-rasā gāya”

Translation: “My Lord, please do not touch me. I fall at Your lotus feet. I am the lowest of men, having been born of a low caste. Besides that, I have infections on my body.”

Jayapatākā Swami: Sanātana Gosvāmī was being very humble not to have his oozing sores affect the body of Lord Caitanya.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.21

balapūrvaka bhagavānera nijapreṣṭha-bhaktavarake āliṅganaḥ—

balātkāre prabhu tāṅre āliṅgana kaila
kaṇḍu-kleda mahāprabhura śrī-aṅge lāgila

Translation: Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, however, embraced Sanātana Gosvāmī by force. Thus the moisture oozing from the itching sores touched the transcendental body of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, the oozing sores left their marks on the transcendental body of Lord Caitanya.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.22

bhaktagaṇera sahita sanātanera milanaḥ—

saba bhakta-gaṇe prabhu milāilā sanātane
sanātana kailā sabāra caraṇa vandane

Translation: The Lord introduced all the devotees to Sanātana Gosvāmī, who offered his respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of them all.

Jayapatākā Swami: Sanātana Gosvāmī was very humble and naturally he offered obeisances to all the associates of Lord Caitanya.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.23

dainyakrame haridāsa o sanātanera bhaktagaṇera nimne upaveśanaḥ—

prabhu lañā vasilā piṇḍāra upare bhakta-gaṇa
piṇḍāra tale vasilā haridāsa sanātana

Translation: The Lord and His devotees sat on a raised platform, and below that sat Haridāsa Ṭhākura and Sanātana Gosvāmī.

Jayapatākā Swami: Haridāsa Ṭhākura and Sanātana Gosvāmī naturally gave Lord Caitanya and His associates a raised platform to sit on. They sat beneath the platform, humbly positioning themselves.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.24

prabhukarttṛka sanātanera o vrajavāsi-bhaktagaṇera kuśalajijñāsā o sanātanera uttaraḥ—

kuśala-vārtā mahāprabhu puchena sanātane
teṅha kahena,—’parama maṅgala dekhinu caraṇe’

Translation: Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu inquired from Sanātana about news of his well-being. Sanātana replied, “Everything is auspicious because I have seen Your lotus feet.”

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.25

mathurāra vaiṣṇava-sabera kuśala puchilā
sabāra kuśala sanātana jānāilā

Translation: When the Lord asked about all the Vaiṣṇavas at Mathurā, Sanātana Gosvāmī informed Him of their good health and fortune.

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya was anxious to hear about the well-being of the Vaiṣṇavas in Vṛndāvana. So in this way Lord Caitanya was the epitome of Vaiṣṇava Care.
