Hare Kṛṣṇa! Dear Devotees Today we will continue with the compilation of Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya book. Today's chapter is entitled as:

Phalaśruti - The Lord’s desire is understood by hearing about how the Lord again met with Sanātana Gosvāmī, [Part 2]

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.223

śrī-rūpera grantharacanādi-kāryaḥ—

rūpa-gosāñi kailā ‘rasāmṛta-sindhu’ sāra
kṛṣṇa-bhakti-rasera yāhāṅ pāiye vistāra

Translation: Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī also wrote many books, the most famous of which is the Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu. From that book one can understand the essence of devotional service to Kṛṣṇa and the transcendental mellows one can derive from such service.

Jayapatākā Swami: Bhakti-rasāmṛta-sindhu has been translated into English as Nectar of Devotion by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.224

‘ujjvala-nīlamaṇi’-nāma grantha kaila āra
rādhā-kṛṣṇa-līlā-rasa tāhāṅ pāiye pāra

Translation: Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī also compiled the book named Ujjvala-nīlamaṇi, from which one can understand, to the fullest limits, the loving affairs of Śrī Śrī Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa.

Jayapatākā Swami: This is a very esoteric book which describes the loving affairs between Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.225

‘vidagdha-mādhava’, ‘lalita-mādhava,—nāṭaka-yugala

kṛṣṇa-līlā-rasa tāhāṅ pāiye sakala

Translation: Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī also compiled two important dramas named Vidagdha-mādhava and Lalita-mādhava, from which one can understand all the mellows derived from the pastimes of Lord Kṛṣṇa.

Jayapatākā Swami: Rūpa Gosvāmī wrote these two books which describe all the mellows of pure devotion for Lord Kṛṣṇa.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.226

‘dāna-keli-kaumudī’ ādi lakṣa-grantha kaila
sei saba granthe vrajera rasa vicārila

Translation: Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī compiled 100,000 verses, beginning with the book Dāna-keli-kaumudī. In all these scriptures he elaborately explained the transcendental mellows of the activities of Vṛndāvana.

Purport: Referring to the words lakṣa-grantha (“100,000 verses”), Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura says that the total number of verses written by Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī is 100,000 (eka-lakṣa or lakṣa-grantha). The copyists count both the verses and the prose sections of the Sanskrit works. One should not mistakenly think that Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī compiled 100,000 books. He actually wrote sixteen books, as mentioned in the First Wave of the Bhakti-ratnākara (śrī-rūpa-gosvāmī grantha ṣoḍaśa karila).

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Rūpa Gosvāmī he was writing sixteen books, a total of over 100,000 verses. So, he was a prolific writer and he revealed the mellows of bhakti.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.227

śrī-jīvera paricaya o grantharacanādi kāryaḥ—

tāṅra laghu-bhrātā—śrī-vallabha-anupama
tāṅra putra mahā-paṇḍita—jīva-gosāñi nāma

Translation: The son of Śrī Vallabha, or Anupama, Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī’s younger brother, was the great learned scholar named Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī.

Jayapatākā Swami: Śrīla Prabhupāda said that if we read the six-sandarbhas of Jīva Gosvāmī we will be totally convinced about the Kṛṣṇa consciousness philosophy.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.228

sarva tyaji’ teṅho pāche āilā vṛndāvana
teṅha bhakti-śāstra bahu kailā pracāraṇa

Translation: After renouncing everything, Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī went to Vṛndāvana. Later he also wrote many books on devotional service and expanded the work of preaching.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.229

‘bhāgavata-sandarbha’-nāma kaila grantha-sāra
bhāgavata-siddhāntera tāhāṅ pāiye pāra

Translation: In particular, Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī compiled the book named Bhāgavata-sandarbha, or Ṣaṭ-sandarbha, which is the essence of all scriptures. From this book one can obtain a conclusive understanding of devotional service and the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.230

‘gopāla-campū’ nāma grantha sāra kaila
vraja-prema-līlā-rasa-sāra dekhāila

Translation: He also compiled the book named Gopāla-campū, which is the essence of all Vedic literature. In this book he has exhibited the ecstatic loving transactions and pastimes of Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa in Vṛndāvana.

Jayapatākā Swami: Śrīla Prabhupāda he was saying that we read the activties of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, therefore if we study ourselves then we can see the qualities of Kṛṣṇa. In the material world man and woman are attracted to each other but this is material because we are not this body, it is not pure love but it is described as lust. But this quality is also in the personality of Kṛṣṇa, He is attracted to the female forms and the female forms are attracted to Him. But this is real love, and therefore to understand Kṛṣṇa it is not so difficult, but one has to hear from the authorized spiritual masters. Because Kṛṣṇa is non-different from His body and Rādhārāṇī is non-different from Her body, so naturally the love between Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa is transcendental. So, if one actually studies these qualities, pastimes of Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa, and does not confuse it with material activities, then he can get great transcendental bliss. Lord Caitanya experienced transcendental bliss in the pastimes of Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa but as an ideal sannyāsī He had nothing to do with material activities.

Hare Kṛṣṇa!

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.231

‘ṣaṭ sandarbhe’ kṛṣṇa-prema-tattva prakāśila
cāri-lakṣa grantha teṅho vistāra karila

Translation: In the Ṣaṭ-sandarbha Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī set forth the truths about transcendental love of Kṛṣṇa. In this way he expanded 400,000 verses in all his books.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Jīva Gosvāmī by writing 400,000 thousand verses, is the most elaborate, concise set of books on the pastimes and qualities of Kṛṣṇa bhakti.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.232

jīva-gosvāmīra pūrva-vṛttānta; mathurāgamanera pūrve nityānanda-kṛpā o ājñā-lābhaḥ—

jīva-gosāñi gauḍa haite mathurā calilā
nityānanda-prabhu-ṭhāñi ājñā māgilā

Translation: When Jīva Gosvāmī wanted to go to Mathurā from Bengal, he requested permission from Śrīla Nityānanda Prabhu.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, getting the blessings from the superior Vaiṣṇavas is the principle that has to be followed and Jīva Gosvāmī is following that.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.233

prabhu prītye tāṅra māthe dharilā caraṇa
rūpa-sanātana-sambandhe kailā āliṅgana

Translation: Because of Jīva Gosvāmī’s relationship with Rūpa Gosvāmī and Sanātana Gosvāmī, who were greatly favored by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, Lord Nityānanda Prabhu placed His feet on the head of Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī and embraced him.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, thus Jīva Gosvāmī got the special blessings from Lord Nityānanda

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.234

śrī-sanātanānvaya śrī-rūpānugagaṇerai vṛndāvana-vāse adhikāra-lābhaḥ—

ājñā dilā,—”śīghra tumi yāha vṛndāvane
tomāra vaṁśe prabhu diyāchena sei-sthāne

Translation: Lord Nityānanda Prabhu ordered, “Yes, go soon to Vṛndāvana. That place has been awarded to your family, to your father and uncles, by Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, and therefore you must go there immediately.”

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Vṛndāvana is Guru-datta desa of Rūpa, Sanātana, Anupama and Jīva Gosvāmīs.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.235

nityānandakṛpā o ājñālābhaphale śrī-jīvera ācāryatvaḥ—

tāṅra ājñāya āilā, ājñā-phala pāilā
śāstra kari’ kata-kāla ‘bhakti’ pracārilā

Translation: By the order of Nityānanda Prabhu, he went to Vṛndāvana and actually achieved the result of His order, for he compiled many books for a long time and preached the cult of bhakti from there.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Jīva Gosvāmī had the mercy of Lord Nityānanda and he fulfilled all the orders of the Lord.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.236

granthi-kārera śikṣāgurutrayaḥ—

ei tina-guru, āra raghunātha-dāsa
iṅhā-sabāra caraṇa vandoṅ, yāṅra muñi ‘dāsa’

Translation: These three — Rūpa Gosvāmī, Sanātana Gosvāmī and Jīva Gosvāmī — are my spiritual masters, and so also is Raghunātha dāsa Gosvāmī. I therefore offer prayers at their lotus feet, for I am their servant.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Kṛṣṇadāsa Kavirāja has taken shelter of these four spiritual masters.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.237

prabhu-sanātana-milana-saṁbāda śravaṇe prabhura loka-śikṣāra abhiprāyānubhavaḥ—

ei ta’ kahiluṅ punaḥ sanātana-saṅgame
prabhura āśaya jāni yāhāra śravaṇe

Translation: Thus I have described how the Lord again met with Sanātana Gosvāmī. By hearing this I can understand the Lord’s desire.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.238

nirantara anuśīlanarūpa manthanaphale caitanya-carita-sindhu haite kṛṣṇaprītyamṛta-lābhaḥ—

caitanya-caritra ei—ikṣu-daṇḍa-sama
carvaṇa karite haya rasa-āsvādana

Translation: These characteristics of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu are like sugar cane that one can chew to relish transcendental juice.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, a stick of sugarcane wherever you bite into it produces sweet juice. So, similarly, Lord Caitanya's pastimes are sweet from beginning to end.

Thus ends the chapter entitled, Phalaśruti – The Lord’s desire is understood by hearing about how the Lord again met with Sanātana Gosvāmī, Part 2
