Working through the body of Sanātana Gosvāmī, Part 3

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.96

sāphalya vā siddhi—kṛṣṇecchārai anugāmī bhṛtyaḥ—

ye karāite cāhe īśvara, sei siddha haya
tomāra saubhāgya ei kahiluṅ niścaya

Translation: “Whatever the Supreme Personality of Godhead wants us to do will successfully be accomplished. This is your great fortune. That is my mature opinion.

Jayapatākā Swami: If we carry out the instructions of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, those will always come true. In that way we can achieve all success. It looks as if we are the doer but actually it is done by the will of the Supreme.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.97

sanātanadvāre prabhura mukhyataḥ śuddha-bhakti o vaiṣṇava-smṛti- saṅkalanadvārā vaiṣṇavācāra-saṁsthāpanaḥ—

bhakti-siddhānta, śāstra-ācāra-nirṇaya
tomā-dvāre karāibena, bujhiluṅ āśaya

Translation: “I can understand from the words of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu that He wants you to write books about the conclusive decision of devotional service and about the regulative principles ascertained from the revealed scriptures.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Sanātana Gosvāmī is being empowered by Lord Caitanya to write specific śāstras, books, and he will do that to fulfill the desire of Lord Caitanya.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.98

haridāsera svābhāvika vaiṣṇavocita dainya o vijñapti-jñāpanaḥ—

āmāra ei deha prabhura kārye nā lāgila
bhārata-bhūmite janmi’ ei deha vyartha haila”

Translation: “My body could not be used in the service of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Therefore although it took birth in the land of India, this body has been useless.”

Purport: For a further explanation of the importance of Bhārata-bhūmi, one may refer to Ādi-līlā 9.41 and also Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 5.19.19-27. The special feature of a birth in India is that a person born in India becomes automatically God conscious. In every part of India, and especially in the holy places of pilgrimage, even an ordinary uneducated man is inclined toward Kṛṣṇa consciousness, and as soon as he sees a Kṛṣṇa conscious person, he offers obeisances. India has many sacred rivers, such as the Ganges, Yamunā, Narmadā, Kāverī and Kṛṣṇā, and simply by bathing in these rivers people are liberated and become Kṛṣṇa conscious.

Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu therefore says:

bhārata-bhūmite haila manuṣya-janma yāra
janma sārthaka kari’ kara para-upakāra

One who has taken birth in the land of Bhārata-bhūmi, India, should take full advantage of his birth. He should become completely well versed in the knowledge of the Vedas and spiritual culture and should distribute the experience of Kṛṣṇa consciousness all over the world.

People all over the world are madly engaging in sense gratification and in this way spoiling their human lives, with the risk that in the next life they may become animals or less. Human society should be saved from such a risky civilization and the danger of animalism by awakening to God consciousness, Kṛṣṇa consciousness. The Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement has been started for this purpose. Therefore unbiased men of the highest echelon should study the principles of the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement and fully cooperate with this movement to save human society.

Jayapatākā Swami: Since the present-day human beings are basically acting like animals, sophisticated animals, they do not have a higher purpose to their lives. They simply spend their life eating, mating, defending and sleeping, There is no other higher purpose. Therefore, if they do not awaken their lives to God consciousness, they could lose their human life and take birth in the lower species, because human life is meant to be God realized. But they are not trying for that, they are trying to enjoy life like the animals, so they may get an animal birth. To save them from that we have Bhagavad-gītā and Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. I was told that in Tirupati, a person died and was being taken to the crematorium on a stretcher. Suddenly he sat up and all people thought, what happened? The dead man has come back to life! They thought he was a ghost. But he said don’t worry, I am alright. Then he went right to the temple, he asked if they had Bhagavad-gītā As it is and they said yes we have it. And then they gave a Bhagavad-gītā translated by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda. The man started crying, he was so happy to have the book. Then the devotees asked him what happened? Why are you crying? Then he told, that you see, I died and my subtle body was taken to Yamaraja by Yamadūtas. He said, no, this is the wrong guy. Then I was taken back to my body and placed there by the Yamadūtas. Then the Yamadūtas said, if you get Bhagavad-Gītā from the Kṛṣṇa temple here, you get Bhagavad-gītā As It Is, you won’t see us again. So when he came alive he immediately came to the temple and got the Bhagavad-gītā as it is, he was so happy he knew that he would not see the Yamadutās again. He started crying. Now we have our book marathon and even the Yamadutās are also helping us to sell Bhagavad-gītās. Haribol!

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.99

sanātana-karttṛka haridāsa-stutiḥ—

sanātana kahe,—“tomā-sama kebā āche āna
mahāprabhura gaṇe tumi—mahā-bhāgyavān!

Translation: Sanātana Gosvāmī replied, “O Haridāsa Ṭhākura, who is equal to you? You are one of the associates of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Therefore, you are the most fortunate.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, this shows how the devotees are so humble and they offered respects to others. Haridāsa Ṭhākura offered respects to Sanātana Gosvāmī and Sanātana Gosvāmī is offering respects to Haridāsa Ṭhākura, this is the exchange of Vaiṣṇavas, exchange of love.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.100

śuddha-kṛṣṇa-nāma-kīrtana vā pracārai ācāryarūpī bhagavadavatārera nija-kṛtya; kīrtanācārya-haridāsadvāre prabhura nāma-pracāraḥ—

avatāra-kārya prabhura—nāma-pracāre
sei nija-kārya prabhu karena tomāra dvāre

Translation: “The mission of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, for which He has descended as an incarnation, is to spread the importance of chanting the holy name of the Lord. Now instead of personally doing so, He is spreading it through you.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Sanātana Gosvāmī is declaring how Haridāsa Ṭhākura by his chanting the holy name is helping Lord Caitanya establish the Saṅkīrtana movement.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.101

ṭhākura haridāsera ācāra o pracāraḥ—

pratyaha kara tina-lakṣa nāma-saṅkīrtana
sabāra āge kara nāmera mahimā kathana

Translation: “My dear sir, you are chanting the holy name 300,000 times daily and informing everyone of the importance of such chanting.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, although Ṭhākura Haridāsa was saying that his body was useless, but Sanātana Gosvāmī explained how by his chanting 300,00 thousand names a day, he was spreading the glories of the holy name.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.102

asuṣṭhu vā asampūrṇa ācāra o pracāraḥ—

āpane ācare keha, nā kare pracāra
pracāra karena keha, nā karena ācāra

Translation: “Some behave very well but do not preach the cult of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, whereas others preach but do not behave properly.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.103

kṛṣṇendriyaprīṇanaceṣṭāmaya yathārtha ācāryerai śuddha-nāma-bhakti-pracāre adhikāra; cāri varṇāśramī o jagatera guru vaiṣṇavācārya paramahaṁsa haridāsa ṭhākurera ādarśa jīvanaḥ—

‘ācāra’, ‘pracāra’,—nāmera karaha ‘dui’ kārya
tumi—sarva-guru, tumi jagatera ārya

Translation: “You simultaneously perform both duties in relation to the holy name by your personal behavior and by your preaching. Therefore you are the spiritual master of the entire world, for you are the most advanced devotee in the world.”

Purport: Sanātana Gosvāmī clearly defines herein the bonafide spiritual master of the world. The qualifications expressed in this connection are that one must act according to the scriptural injunctions and at the same time preach. One who does so is a bona fide spiritual master. Haridāsa Ṭhākura was the ideal spiritual master because he regularly chanted on his beads a prescribed number of times. Indeed, he was chanting the holy name of the Lord 300,000 times a day. Similarly, the members of the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement chant a minimum of sixteen rounds a day, which can be done without difficulty, and at the same time they must preach the cult of Caitanya Mahāprabhu according to the gospel of Bhagavad-gītā As It Is. One who does so is quite fit to become a spiritual master for the entire world.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, the qualification of a spiritual master is described in this verse Purport. So, Sanātana Gosvāmī is showing how Haridāsa Ṭhākura is the perfect spiritual master, he does both pracāra and ācāra he does the outreach as well as the behavior.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.104

haridāsa o sanātanera paraspara kṛṣṇa-kathā-saṁlāpe kālayāpanaḥ—

ei-mata dui-jana nānā-kathā-raṅge
kṛṣṇa-kathā āsvādaya rahi’ eka-saṅge

Translation: In this way the two of them passed their time discussing subjects concerning Kṛṣṇa. Thus they enjoyed life together.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, discussing the topics of Kṛṣṇa gives one real spiritual satisfaction, Haridāsa Ṭhākura and Sanātana Gosvāmī thus passed their time discussing topics related to Kṛṣṇa. If we do the same thing, we can also achieve Kṛṣṇa’s mercy in this lifetime.

Thus ends the chapter entitled, Working through the body of Sanātana Gosvāmī, Part 3
