Hare Kṛṣṇa! Today we will continue with the Compilation of Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya book, today’s chapter is entitled as:

Mahārāja Pratāparudra’s Amazing Dream
Under the section, The Beḍa kīrtana pastimes of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.148

daive eka-dina nṛtya karena īśvara
śuni’ rājā ekeśvara āilena satvara

Jayapatākā Swami: By the will of providence one day Lord Caitanya was dancing, hearing of this the king came quickly to see the Lord.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.149

antavāla haite rājākarttṛka prabhura nṛtya o adbhuta premonmāda-darśana—
āḍe thāki’ dekhe rājā nṛtya kare prabhu
parama adbhuta!—yāhā nāhi dekhi kabhu

Jayapatākā Swami: The King remained out of sight and watched Lord Caitanya’s dancing. It was supremely wonderful; the king had never seen such a wonder before.

Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhāta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: The King stayed away from the sight of the Lord and concealed his identity as he watched Gaurasundara dance.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.150

avicchinna kata dhārā vahe śrī-nayane
kampa sveda pulaka vairvarṇya kṣaṇe kṣaṇe

Jayapatākā Swami: From His lotus eyes, tears flowed incessantly in streams. His body has symotoms of quivering, perspiration, hairs standing on end, and changing color from moment to moment.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.151

hena se āchāḍa prabhu paḍena bhūmite
hena nāhi ye vā trāsa nā pāya dekhite

Jayapatākā Swami: At that moment Lord Caitanya fell to the ground very forcefully. As a result those who saw the Lord falling, there was not a single person who did not feel frightened.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.152

hena se karena prabhu huṅkāra garjana
śuniyā pratāparudra dharena śravaṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya roared so loudly that King Pratāparudra had to cover his ears.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.153

kakhana karena hena rodana virahe
rājā dekhe śrī-nayane yena nadī vahe

Jayapatākā Swami: Sometimes Lord Caitanya cried so intensely out of separation that the King saw that His lotus eyes had streams of tears like rivers flowing from His eyes.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.154

ei mata kata haya ananta vikāra
kata haya kata yāya lekhā nāhi tāra

Jayapatākā Swami: In this way the unlimited transformations of love that came and went, that appeared and disappeared cannot be written.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.155

niravadhi dui mahā-bāhu-daṇḍa tuli’
’hari bala’ baliyā nācena kutūhalī

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya, sometimes raised His two great arms and joyfully danced and chanted, “Hari bol!”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.156

ei mata nṛtya prabhu kari’ kata-kṣaṇe
bāhya prakāśiyā vasilena sarva-gaṇe

Jayapatākā Swami: After dancing for some time in this way, Lord Caitanya manifested external consciousness and sat down with all His associates.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.157

rājā o calilā alakṣite sei-kṣaṇe
dekhiyā prabhura nṛtya parānanda-mane

Jayapatākā Swami: The King left unnoticed from that place. His mind was filled with transcendental ecstasy from seeing Lord Caitanya’s dancing.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.158

dekhiyā adbhuta nṛtya adbhuta vikāra
rājāra manete haila santoṣa apāra

Jayapatākā Swami: The King was mentally very unlimitedly satisfied after seeing the wonderful dancing and wonderful transformations of loving ecstasy. So, King Pratāparudra was able to finally see the Lord dancing. He could see that the Lord’s ecstasy was something incomparable with anything. So, having this special darśana, he was satisfied and while he wasn’t noticed by anyone he quickly slipped away. But he was feeling most satisfied to have seen the Lord dancing in ecstasy.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.159

līlādhulāvyāpta aṅgadarśane rājāra sandeha—
sabe ekakhāni mātra dharilena mane
seha tāna anugraha haibāra kāraṇe

Jayapatākā Swami: But in his mind there arose one doubt, which later became the cause of his achieving the Lord’s mercy.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.160

prabhura nayane yata divya dhārā vaya
niravadhi nācite śrī-mukhe lālā haya

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya’s eyes was continuously shedding divine tears constantly as He was dancing, and there was saliva that flowed from His lotus mouth.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.161

dhūlāya lālāya nāsikāra prema-dhāre
sakala śrī-aṅga vyāpta kīrtana-vikāre

Jayapatākā Swami: In the ecstasy of kīrtana, Lord Caitanya’s entire body became covered with dust, saliva, and water from His nose in manifestationsof His love.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.162

e sakala kṛṣṇa-bhāva nā bujhi’ nṛpati
īṣat sandeha tāna dharileka mati

Jayapatākā Swami: The King was unable to fathom the ecstasies of love for Kṛṣṇa so some doubt arose in his mind.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.163

kāro sthāne ihā rājā nā kari’ prakāśa
parama santoṣe rājā gelā nija-vāsa

Jayapatākā Swami: The King did not reveal this to anyone but He returned to his residence in great satisfaction.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.164

prabhure dekhiyā rājā mahāsukhī haiyā
thākilena gṛhe giyāśayana kariyā

Jayapatākā Swami: When the King saw Lord Caitanya, he became very happy. He went to His house and went to sleep.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.165

’āpane śrī-jagannātha nyāsi-rūpa dhari’
nije saṅkīrtana-krīḍā kare avatari’

Jayapatākā Swami: He saw Lord Jagannātha personally appearing in the form of a sannyāsī. To propagate His saṅkīrtana movement, He had taken an incarnation.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.166

īśvara-māyāya rājā marma nāhi jāne
sei prabhu jānāite lāgilā āpane

Jayapatākā Swami: By the influence of the Lord’s illusory energy, the King did not understand this confidential fact. Therefore, Lord Caitanya revealed this truth to him.

Purport: Although the offenses committed by Pratāparudra resulting from his previous aversion to Kṛṣṇa were destroyed upon seeing the Lord, since he depended on the strength of his sensual knowledge, he could not understand that Śrī Gaurasundara was Kṛṣṇa. Rather, he became doubtful about Śrī Caitanya, thinking that He was simply a devotee. His thoughts were bewildered by Kṛṣṇa’s illusory energy. To display mercy on him, Lord Jagannātha appeared to him in a dream. As a result, the King became repentant and begged forgiveness for his offense.

Jayapataka Swami: So, by Jagannātha appearing in a dream of the King Pratāparudra and taking the form as a sannyāsī to spread the Harināma saṅkīrtana movement, He saw that Lord Caitanya was actually Kṛṣṇa and that He had come to establish the harināma-saṅkīrtana. So Pratāparudra Mahārāja, he felt very repentant, for his having doubted the actual position of Lord Caitanya.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.167

rājāra svapna-darśana-svapnayoge śrī-jagannāthake līlā-dhūlāvyāptarūpe darśana—

sukṛti pratāparudra rātre svapna dekhe
svapne giyāchena jagannāthera sammukhe

Jayapatākā Swami: The fortunate King Pratāparudra saw a dream that night. In the dream Lord Jagannātha appeared before him.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.168

rājā dekhe—jagannātha-aṅga dhūlā-maya
dui śrī-nayane yena gaṅgā-dhārā vaya

Jayapatākā Swami: The King saw that the body of Lord Jagannātha was covered with dust, and from His two eyes tears flowed like streams from the Ganges.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.169

dui śrī-nāsāya jala paḍe nirantara
śrī-mukhera lāla paḍe, tite kalevara

Jayapatākā Swami: From His two lotus nostrils water continuously flowed, and from His lotus mouth saliva fell and soaked His body.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.170

svapne rājā mane cinte—“e ki-rūpa līlā!
bujhite nā pāri jagannāthera ki khelā!”

Jayapatākā Swami: So, the King thought in the dream, “What kind of pastime is this! I am unable to understand what Lord Jagannātha is playing!”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.171

svapne rājāra jagannāthera śrī-aṅga-sparśanārtha udyama, jagannāthera anuyogapūrṇa ukti—

jagannāthera caraṇa sparśite rājā yāya
jagannātha bale,—“rājā, e ta’nā yuyāya

Jayapatākā Swami: The King went to touch Lord Jagannātha’s lotus feet, but Lord Jagannātha said, “O King, this is not proper.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.172

karpūra, kasturī, gandha, candana, kuṅkume
lepita tomāra aṅga sakala uttame

Jayapatākā Swami: “Your body is smeared with fragrant camphor, musk, sandalwood paste, and fragrant oils and kuṅkuma.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.173

āmāra śarīra dekha—dhūlā-lālā-maya
āmā paraśite ki tomāra yogya haya

Jayapatākā Swami: “And you see My body, it is covered with dust and saliva. Is it proper for you to touch Me?

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.174

āmi ye nācite āji tumi giyāchi
lāghṛṇā kaile mora aṅge dekhi’ dhūlā-lālā

Jayapatākā Swami: “When you went to see Me dancing today, you felt repugnant on seeing My body covered with dust and saliva.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.175

Jayapatākā Swami: “Just see, all My entire body is covered with dust and saliva, and you are a king as well as the son of a king.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.176

āmāre sparśite ki tomāra yogya haya?”
eta bali’ bhṛtye cāhi’ hāse dayā-maya

Jayapatākā Swami: “Am I fit to be touched by you?” Saying all these words, looking at His servant, the Lord smiled mercifully.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.177

tanmuhurtei rājāra śrī-jagannāthera siṁhāsane samabhāve
śrī-caitanyera avasthāna-darśana:—

sei-kṣaṇe dekhe rājā sei siṁhāsane
caitanya-gosāñi vasi’ āchena āpane

Jayapatākā Swami: At that moment the King saw on the throne of Lord Jagannātha, that Caitanya Gosāi was sitting.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.178

sei mata sakala śrī-aṅga dhūlā-maya
rājāre balena hāsi’—“e ta’ yogya naya

Jayapatākā Swami: In this way His entire lotus body was covered with dust. He told the king laughingly, this is not proper, or this is not appropriate.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.179

svapne rājāra prati śrī-caitanyera ukti—
tumi ye āmāre ghṛṇā kari’ gelā mane
tabe tumi āmāre sparśibe ki kāraṇe”

Jayapatākā Swami: “You felt aversion to touch Me and went home, so why would you want to touch Me now?”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.180

ei mate pratāparūdrere kṛpā kari’
siṁhāsane vasi’ hāse gaurāṅga-śrī-hari

Jayapatākā Swami: In this way the Lord gave His mercy to King Pratāparudra and Lord Gaurāṅga, Śrī Hari smiled as He sat on the altar or the siṁhāsana.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.181

rājāra jāgaraṇa o krandana—
rājāra haila kata-kṣaṇe jāgaraṇa
caitanya pāiyā rājā karena krandana

Jayapatākā Swami: After a while, the King woke up and after getting consciousness the King started to cry.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.182

rājāra anutāpa—
“mahā-aparādhī muñi pāpī durācāra
nā jāniluṅ caitanya—īśvara-avatāra

Jayapatākā Swami: “I am a great offender, sinful person, misbehaved. I did not understand that Lord Caitanya was the incarnation of the Supreme Lord.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.183

jīvera vā kon śakti tāhāne jānite
brahmādira moha haya yāṅhāra māyāte

Jayapatākā Swami: “Living entities, how can they have the potencies to know Him? Even personalities like Brahmā are bewildered by His illusory energy.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.184

eteke kṣamaha prabhu, mora aparādha
nija-dāsa kari’ more karaha prasāda”

Jayapatākā Swami: “Therefore, Lord Caitanya, please forgive for my offenses. Bestow Your mercy on me, accept me as Your servant, giving Your mercy.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.185

rājāra śrī-caitanya o śrī-jagannāthe abheda-jñāna—

āpane śrī-jagannātha—caitanya-gosāñi
rājā jānilena, ithe kichu bheda nāi

Jayapatākā Swami: The King thus realized that Lord Jagannātha and Śrī Caitanya Gosāi are nondifferent, there is no difference. We see Lord Caitanya is the moving Jagannātha and Lord Jagannātha is the Dāru-Brahman, the wooden Lord.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.186

prabhu-darśane rājāra prabala utkaṇṭhā—

viśeṣa utkaṇṭhā haila prabhure dekhite

tathāpi nā pāre keha dekhā karāite

Jayapatākā Swami: He had intense desire to see Lord Caitanya, but no one was able to arrange such a meeting. So, King Pratāparudra, he wanted to meet Lord Caitanya personally and of course Lord Caitanya was following the policy that a sannyāsī should not meet the king. So King Pratāparudra was very frustrated, and he wanted to meet Lord Caitanya and he wanted to serve Lord Caitanya but he was not allowed. Then he had this amazing dream, where he realized that Lord Jagannātha Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu are non-different. So we see Lord Caitanya was playing the part of a devotee but now people understand that actually He was Lord Kṛṣṇa Himself, and so they should be very inspired to fulfill the desires of Lord Caitanya.

Thus, ends the chapter entitled, “Mahārāja Pratāparudra’s Amazing Dream” under the section, the Beḍa kīrtana pastimes of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.
