The following is a lecture on Bhāgavata-kathā given by His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami Mahārāja on October 12, 1979 – in Śrī Māyāpur, India

But people are thinking that due to long hairs, they’re very beautiful. Especially one requires hair so he can attract the women. Even he may not think of it, but that is actually the thing one wants to look very nice. Looking nice means they’re very attractive, mainly for the women. It’s predicted in Khalid Yuga that the men, they will be thinking who is beautiful according to how nice long hair they are having. They will think who is beautiful according to how long it is. You see, in previous age, who was more learned, who is truthful, who is austere, who is very clean, he’s considered to be a very beautiful person. But now if one has long hair in some societies, even today, they are thinking that’s very beautiful.

And of course, by wearing this uniform, then one is reminded that my purpose is in this life, a higher purpose to reach Kṛṣṇa. That this life is not meant for just wasting away in eating, sleeping, mating, in defending, without trying to realize who am I, who is Ka? We dedicate our lives to the service of Guru and Kṛṣṇa. And we want that people should recognize us not as this body, but we are the living ātmā, the Ji within the body. When our father dies, he’s lying there. Then everybody is crying that father has gone away. But hair is there, face, skin, everything is there. So who’s gone away? Who is the spirit? He is the person, not the body. So when we think that, oh, if this body is very nice and we are nice, we cheating ourselves if we’re not this body.

You see, just like I can rent a big house for about 3,4000 rupees in Calcutta. And very big mansion, just like a palace for 3,000 rubles. The purchase that would cost me about 50 lakhs. So I am living in rented house. But I don’t tell anybody this is rented house. People say, oh, what a wonderful house. Chef. Yes. You must be very big man. Oh well, they were renting the house. The people are staying at nice house. I am feeling very proud. Even then I didn’t pay my rent. So then we’re having a big function. And then right in the middle of the function, they come and drag me out that you’re not paying your rent. Eviction like that. We may have a nice body or we may have, you see, not so nice body.

But that is according to the mercy of Kṛṣṇa and our previous karmas. That in previous birth. And the proof, you see, that it’s not our body is that we can’t stay here longer than the time. Fix them. The owner of the house anytime he can evict us. But if Samani acts only in Kṛṣṇa’s service, you see, then for him there’s no. His rent is fully paid. He can live on for a long time. And after you see the finishing of this temporary house then he can stay with Kṛṣṇa. And that house, you see, never gets destroyed. And this body is nice for some time but gradually it gets all wrinkled. One of our friends here, these guys are getting old. Now he has to use a cane. So like this, you see the body.

We start off, you see first on four legs, then gradually. Then we go up on two legs. Then again we’re going back to three legs. So even this body, we like to keep it. But how long we can keep it? President of United States President Carter his mother. Mother, right? Yeah. Mother or wife? It’s a facelift. Wife? Yeah, his wife she got plastic surgery. There’s wrinkles coming here. So by surgery they pull tight the face because face is coming so they pull it tight. It costs 2 lakhs of rupees to pull the face tight for 3 years face will be tight then gradually again. So this way she gets looking about five years younger. For three years, only two lakhs of rupees. University what’s plastic surgery? You explain. So this is what we call Māyā illusion. But she cannot stop the aging.

Aging is going on. But the materialists, they are very attached to their body so they will spend any amount if they look very nice. We are not very much. We are not concerned with this superficial. Who is the actual person with him we are concerned.

It is the thing under aggregate.

What do you think?

You mean the inner soul? Yeah.

What’s the difference between you and the inner soul?

I, I am the inner soul. Yeah, why not? Christians say my son.

Any question now.

That when they go for something they say this sort of question. Somebody says you shave your head but it’s little bit pointing like piece of hair on the back. You know why you keep that? So I say that when this is a sign of a devotee one has taken shelter in the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa.

If you ask the policeman.

He has very special uniform so that you can recognize the police. Common man and the police exactly like that.

This is big hand.

This is just like Marshall. This painting you can see on the left, it shows that Nitanu, Mahapur and Parsha’s companions and followers they all must have been on the shaved head and having Cheekah at the back. We just follow. I just our spiritual masters and Acharya follows. We Follow them. This is our duty. They have been doing this. And next time they also did this. So we are also doing.

If somebody has.

And if we see some guy having considered that he’s a Māyā Baji. He’s thinking himself that I am the God he suffered.

They like to be knowing.

This is also humbleness. There is a difference between Kṛṣṇa and me. They are all one. He thinks I am subordinate to the Lord. I am not equal to the Lord. Always I am subordinate. Another sign has Goshika shaved head. And according to scripture is written the symptoms of the devotee. And he decorated his body with 12 signs of tulsi. And he has got tulsi bit on the neck and footprint and sides and different sides. He has got 12 signs. And they call his body this way and this way. Until he goes. One of them. I think. Or somebody else. You have got that he asked a question. Every morning somebody reads that 10 offenses. So they say that you should be free from data offensive. And then you can talk into something life inside. And others like reiding the Vedic scriptures.

If somebody is careful, they avoid these offenses.

We should try to avoid.

If someone is really sincere to achieve Kṛṣṇa. And Kṛṣṇa Guru approaches them naturally he will get their mercy. By their mercy he can.

What is.

Most important, what is required. That means he should be just like one become ready like that he should be achieved. Secondly, humbleness foreign.

Hungary.

That means himself lower than his cheap and more tolerant than his cheap. And in that state he can and giving all respect to others, expecting any respect from others. Then in that state becoming so humble that he is emphasizing the point of humbling. If somebody is very humble, naturally he can. He will qualify to chant. But one who is very.

Guru Kṛṣṇa Prasadevai Bhakti Lord Prabhupāda.

When somebody is traveling in passing through different stages. And going through from one another, changing his body. And so many times in this way. If somebody is very fortunate, then he come across devotee as a Buddhist. And then by his mercy, he gets the seed of devotion to Nalish seed. So that it grows. You know, practifies. So one has to naturally pour water and take care. So exactly like that. This chanting and listening Savannah and Kirtanam has to be done. Probably after getting the Guru. You must listen what guru says. And then and accordingly he should. Around that small plant. There may be some other bushes and plants other growth. And those other small plants are just like. Other than pure devotion. Whatever you desire. That’s what it is. Compared to Those.

Opera Udesha JJ Bhakto Jokan Opera.

10 offenses is there so that the devotee present there they are aware of all those offenses. And just like those who are his unwanted trees grow around that tree plant. We have to use a nirani to take that out, uproot it so it can grow nicely. So exactly like that the devotee should be aware of those offenses so that he doesn’t commit. Function of the Guru is to point him out what sort offenses he is.

Ajari Operad hoy Amajari opera Kṛṣṇa Nami say Jar.

First of all, since you have committed offenses, naturally that though we have the desire to get Kṛṣṇa instead committing offenses, so it is not coming pure. He cannot stand purely. But if. If we listen what Guru Maharaj is saying and try to implement it, then you can get to that result.

When you make an offense, then the humility is there and the desire is there. So one will pray to get forgiven from the offense and take the necessary means to avoid committing the offense again. Even one makes a mistake once or twice, three times, four times. Kṛṣṇa, he forgives. Guru forgives. He accepts that. But. But if again and again one does, a time will come when no more acceptance. If he takes for granted.

One has to feel ashamed. If he commits these offenses, he should feel ashamed. Those who are sinful, they boast, they are fucked up. They think I have done so much sins.

This satisfied.

Satisfied.

(Side B of the Cassette)

The farmers use and they take out dig up and throw that and throw those together. What he. What he means by Nirani? He’s asking that he wants to know what do you mean by Nirani?

Yes, how to get to wisdom. How to get.

J that everything can be done by the problem solved by the mercy of Guru and Kṛṣṇa. So if the person who is committing this offense, if he thinks that really sincerely feels that I am ashamed of all these things, you know, I shouldn’t have done that. Sincerely thinks and feels ashamed.

That’s how you take out.

This is the way you upgrade.

Opera.

One has to be very vigilant and see whether what is exactly? Whether he which one is offensive, whether he’s making offense. And then sincerely he should think that whether I must shake this off, I should be ashamed of that. He has to always vigilant.

Guru by King.

Maharaj giving an example as one devotee. Maybe God brother, he’s in a hurry. And so he thought he’s doing some injustice. So he’s saying that this man do.

Bring injustice to himself. Also.

That God brother, he knows that he’s doing injustice to him. That God brother also. So he.

That if he makes an offense to a Vaishnava even his Godbrother is also Vaishnav then that offense will hurt his spiritual life. So he tells them, you should be careful not to speak against Vaishnav. Taqwa Sejidi, don’t be Taki Tarsi Guru Baikono Boishnav and in the Portio.

Who was criticizing derising the other God brother, he still after saying these things and listening from other God brothers still he means Poplar. He thinks of what I have done. And naturally how can you get rid of this offense? He might have done some progress in spiritual life. But this sort offense at once checks his progress. We may be going step by step upward. But the moment making offense like that advance are moving. The one who is making the offense. If he does this with a devotee, those are advanced more and more advanced. His severity of the offense will be such like proportional, more dangerous. That is why one has to think it is natural. Just like a small baby trying to get up, stand and walk. But all of them again exactly like that. He may be giant still will make mistake.

But still we have to.

Buddha.

So we have enthusiasm and strong desire to go to the Father to go to Kṛṣṇa. But we make mistake. But still we must have a strong desire to go.

Then.

We cannot stop. Still we achieve our goal. Next question is those who don’t believe in Sadhu, Guru and in Kṛṣṇa. What is the destination? Suppose we are crossing an ocean and suddenly there is a small hole. And so most of the people we are in the water. And there is somewhere else. There is a helicopter to save us. And throw some rope so that you can climb up. We will take out of the rope and climb. But if somebody thinks no, I won’t take help of the rope. I am not going to climb. I will on my own. I will swim in the sea and save myself. And you can do it. I saying that human life is very valuable because of the fact that the helicopter may come maybe second time, third time.

But that guy, if he is adamant, he thinks I will swim on my own. I don’t care. So what can we do? What the shadus can do? Shadus are like ropes. Maybe then next again he will naturally he may go back to this life again. How long it will take again to come back? The Sahas are always there as a rope and they can take the help. Sadhu is always going to the bhakta. You are devotee. He will naturally go back to Kṛṣṇa. So if somebody takes the help hold their hand or that rope. So you have to be careful always you must hold it tightly. One who is really interested to say himself he should wait tightly catch the lotusly of the but the moment he releases his hand, advance again.

Charlie.

So it is not very difficult to go back to God Simply wants to hold very tight with the Lord of feet of Guru and go anytime. But if he doesn’t like.

Why are you so sad looking?

Me no.

Should be very happy. Kṛṣṇa service. If we’re not happy, that means we’re not thinking about Kṛṣṇa. All the time. Anybody was thinking about Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa, you can always only be happy.

He said that I committed saving offenses.

So if you keep clinging to the tiger’s feet then you will overcome all your offenses. If you.

Who has question.

First we get one chance. If no one has original question, then you get second.

Proton prosthetosity of the alias. Question.

First Question. What’s your name? You come from South Africa a long way.

Yes.

How do you like my airport? I like it very much. Austere for you.

Not really. I was expecting.

Very nice heavy there. All right. What’s your question?

He is asking a question that sometimes. Usually in relation to Guru. Sometimes Guru gives us order. But if you get that sort of order in his dream we see that Guru is giving me an order instruction. Shall we accept it as real.

Guru Sapna Pragito Nais have a Guru Mirchethaji.

So Maharaj said that to see Guru Maharaj in a dream while he is giving instruction, whatever this is transcendental. But it is yet to see that sort of dream that Guru is giving order. And Guru is really his property manifested already. So he can ask him that I have some to confirm whether he really wants him to carry or not. When Guru or Kṛṣṇa comes to the dream that is not common and ordinary thing that should be considered.

Take it with a grain of salt.

So many types of people can tell about the literature. So many have seen this sort of being there.

Just speak a little louder.

There are so many people there about so many nice things, maybe dreams, so many wild things. But we don’t accept anything only like we listen. Many Shadists say that when the disappears heals his body then as if he comes in dream and shadows say that is very sinister. When somebody see dreams his dream sees Guru or Kṛṣṇa Rashna normal dream he will see as if. As if he is really seeing not a dream. So sometimes in a dream something may come and dream which may not be very clear.

The thing was written.

But whatever is written, whatever Guru has written in his book or he is saying directly there is life and there is bad act.

That’s more significant.

That is more significant.

Hard questions the whole verse.

He’s asking a question, referring one song from Rosunea that means harmonization and.

Also.

Care of me.

Better if he for the. If he wants the exact thing for that better he shows any other question.

Thousands, millions of names. They’re all equally potent. And why is it that we should we will be advised only concern Hare Kṛṣṇa Mahamadou. Again.

Because we can chant any name of Kṛṣṇa. But the Shastra says that unless we get the name from the spiritual master in the disciplic succession, that name or mantra will have no effect. So of course one can change chant. But we following in the footsteps of Chaitatna Mahāprabhu. So he chanted Hare Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare Ram. So we also chanted following in his footsteps.

Sastibulu Kṛṣṇa.

And we chant so many names. We chant so many Bhajans By Narottam Thakur, by Vinod Thakur, by Lo Cham Das Thakur. By other cryas in the disciplic succession Guru Paramparā. But some mantra may have something which is not correct in it. So then we avoid those which may have some misconception in the songs. Just like the mantra has got a lot of misconception in it. This mantra was not given by Lord Chaitanya Mahabhara. Lord Chaitanya told everyone to chant Hare Kṛṣṇa Mahamantra. But he told everyone in the Santanaya Upanishad it says Hare Kṛṣṇa. Hare Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa. Hari. Hari. Hari. Hari.

These 16 names.

All the bad effect of Kali Yuga are destroyed by the power of this holy name. There is no other way in this Kali Yuga then these holy names this is a verdict of all these scriptures. This is the most powerful mantra which can stop all the influence of the Kaliyah.
