The following is a lecture given by His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami Mahārāja on January 31, 2003 – in Melbourne, Australia. The lecture begins with a reading from Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 5.19.19.
Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 5.19.19
asminn eva varṣe puruṣair labdha-janmabhiḥ śukla-lohita-kṛṣṇa-varṇena svārabdhena karmaṇā divya-mānuṣa-nāraka-gatayo bahvya ātmana ānupūrvyeṇa sarvā hy eva sarveṣāṁ vidhīyante yathā-varṇa-vidhānam apavargaś cāpi bhavati.
Translation By His Divine Grace Śrīla Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda: The people who take birth in this tract of land are divided according to the qualities of material nature—the modes of goodness [sattva-guṇa], passion [rajo-guṇa], and ignorance [tamo-guṇa]. Some of them are born as exalted personalities, some are ordinary human beings, and some are extremely abominable, for in Bhārata-varṣa one takes birth exactly according to one's past karma. If one's position is ascertained by a bona fide spiritual master and one is properly trained to engage in the service of Lord Viṣṇu according to the four social divisions [brāhmaṇa, kṣatriya, vaiśya and śūdra] and the four spiritual divisions [brahmacārī, gṛhastha, vānaprastha and sannyāsa], one's life becomes perfect.
Purport by His Divine Grace Śrīla Prabhupāda: For further information, one should refer to Bhagavad-gītā (14.18 and 18.42-45). Śrīla Rāmānujācārya writes in his book Vedārtha-saṅgraha:
evaṁ-vidha-parābhakti-svarūpa-jñāna-viśeṣasyotpādakaḥ pūrvoktāharahar upacīyamāna-jñāna-pūrvaka-karmānugṛhīta-bhakti-yoga eva; yathoktaṁ bhagavatā parāśareṇa—varṇāśrameti. nikhila-jagad-uddhāraṇāyāvanitale 'vatīrṇaṁ para-brahma-bhūtaḥ puruṣottamaḥ svayam etad uktavān—"svakarma-nirataḥ siddhiṁ yathā vindati tac chṛṇu" "yataḥ pravṛttir bhūtānāṁ yena sarvam idaṁ tatam / svakarmaṇā tam abhyarcya siddhiṁ vindati mānavaḥ"
In the Viṣṇu Purāṇa (3.8.9), the great sage Parāśara Muni has recommended:
varṇāśramācāravatā
puruṣeṇa paraḥ pumān
viṣṇur ārādhyate panthā
nānyat tat-toṣa-kāraṇam
[Cc. Madhya 8.58]
"The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Viṣṇu, is worshiped by the proper execution of prescribed duties in the system of varṇa and āśrama. There is no other way to satisfy the Lord." In the land of Bhārata-varṣa, the institution of varṇāśrama-dharma may be easily adopted. At the present moment, certain demoniac sections of the population of Bhārata-varṣa are disregarding the system of varṇāśrama-dharma. Because there is no institution to teach people how to become brāhmaṇas, kṣatriyas, vaiśyas and śūdras or brahmacārīs, gṛhasthas, vānaprasthas and sannyāsīs, these demons want a classless society. This is resulting in chaotic conditions. In the name of secular government, unqualified people are taking the supreme governmental posts. No one is being trained to act according to the principles of varṇāśrama-dharma, and thus people are becoming increasingly degraded and are heading in the direction of animal life. The real aim of life is liberation, but unfortunately the opportunity for liberation is being denied to people in general, and therefore their human lives are being spoiled. The Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement, however, is being propagated all over the world to reestablish the varṇāśrama-dharma system and thus save human society from gliding down to hellish life.
Let’s say in the Bhakti Gigabata Swami translation. Of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam chapter entitled the island of Jambudweep, which is in the fifth Canto 19th chapter. And this was verse 19 spoken here at the Branaghagokunanda temple in the island of Mauritius in the middle of the salt ocean. On this auspicious 31st of January 2003. Christopher 516 Gaurābda.
* * *
Interesting thought came to mind how animal society is classes, Even in animals they have some kind, certain categories.
The whole purpose of human form of life is meant to get us back to Godhead. We’re born in this Bhairavarsha according to different combinations of modes of nature. Mode of goodness is like yellow, mode of passion is like red. Mode of ignorance is like blue. You mix the three, you get unlimited varieties. So everybody in the material world, especially in this Bharat Varsha, they’re born in these different combinations. Previously it was quite distinct. Someone was very much in the mode of goodness or very much in the mode of ignorance. Now things are much more mixed up. Śrīla Prabhupāda been trying to establish the Ashrams in Iskcon, establishing the Brahmacharis and then the Grihasthas.
Now some people are getting the aids to take Vanaprastha and there was some seminars given at the Māyāpur Institute of Higher Education on Bana Prastha Ashram which people are starting to take an interest in. And of course there are many Samanthanasami Rihasta Ashram which we’re trying to get established in ISKCON in a proper setting, then the Sanyasa Ashram. In this way the ashrams they’re quite familiar in ISKCONs. There’s been a lot of discussion about how to establish the Varnas, but it’s because actually our previous Acharya mission cannot establish exactly like it was before. And since devotional service is actually even higher Bhakti yoga is a higher principle than the Varn Ashram in itself. Then the people are engaged in bhakti yoga. That is a much higher level. So then organizing the people’s services according to their devotional service becomes a daiva varnashtra.
Everybody is the same class. Everyone’s the same class, which is a Haribhakta devotee of Kṛṣṇa. But according to their nature, they do different services. Someone may be a carpenter for Kṛṣṇa, somebody may be a teacher for Kṛṣṇa. If everybody’s on the platform of pure devotional service, then you can have a daiva varanashram system. Otherwise, if they’re not in devotional service, then you have. The idea of varanasram is really. The varanas give with it certain responsibilities, just like in a Brahmanasmosta teacher. Brahmanas are able to take donations, but they’re supposed to be charitable. Whatever they get, they’re supposed to give in charity, they’re supposed to live simply. They’re supposed to have a very high moral standard. So like they’re the priests, the teachers. They’re supposed to be in the mode of good things.
It’s a big scandal when a priest is acting in a mode of ignorance anywhere in the world. Whether it’s in America, where many priests have been found to have abused children, or in the schools, when a teacher has abused a child or even. I was in Thailand and they found some monks were breaking regular principles, they were having illicit sex or drinking, and they were discovered. So then they were taken before a tribunal of monks and they were then judged like a court martial. But the monks themselves do it. And then they were defrocked. That was what it was described they called defrocking, where their monk robes were formally taken away from them and they were handed back civil dress and they were banned for life from ever being a monk again. They have the same system of Burma defect somebody.
So the idea is that, well, you find like in the west, sometimes there’s teachers. I have teachers who are really. Some of them are really bad. Their morals. And then the teachers should be the role models for the children. Teachers, priests and such personalities should be role models. When they have a bad character, then it’s very problematic. So the idea that varanas were people who are in this category, they should be in the mode of goodness. They should live in this way. They should live a very pure light, have a very good habit. And because that’s not there, then it’s very detrimental for the whole society because of the degradation of the brahminical Varṇa. Then there’s a very big problem. I remember were preaching one time in one Hindu temple as a guest of the local priest.
And then after the one of the Iskcon sannyasis went to see the priest and then they saw that when he was opening his refrigerator he had mead and had liquor and everything and said but you are preaching in the temple to be vegetarian and to don’t drink. But here you are doing all this. He said no, that’s my public life. In my public life I speak the party life. But in my private life I can do what I want. Then what is then who’s going to follow such a priest, right? It’s the total hypocrisy. You speak one thing and you do the opposite. So. It’s important that the Brahmanas, they said that live according to their standard, according to their precepts. The problem I wanted especially the Kṛṣṇa conscious movement to establish some Vaishnava Brāhmaṇa.
So one of the features of a Brāhmaṇa is he works for the welfare of society, works for the welfare of others. To be a selfless person working for the upliftment of the human society. But sometimes you get people who they become priests just because they can’t get another job or something. There’s a story by Bhakti Siddhānta Saraswati Thakur that once there was a son of a priest, but he was actually an atheist. He couldn’t get a job. So then he took a job as a priest because he knew how to do the pujas. He was a professional priest in one rich man’s private temple but he was actually atheist. So when one day someone gave a bag of peanuts which were in the shell and he loves peanuts. This is like especially he really loves peanuts. So he couldn’t wait to eat the peanut.
So he closed the door of the temple. He didn’t know how to break the peanut shell. So then he took the Shali gram sheila off the altar because he was an atheist and it was just a show anyway. And he started breaking the peanut. Meanwhile the owner came to see his deities and here’s this saudn in the temple, looks to the window and he’s aghast that this priest is smashing peanuts with the Shali Gramshila, the sacred deity of Narayan. So he obviously flipped out. He completely got angry and broke the door down, grabbed the guy by the neck and threw him out. Said, you rascal demon, you’re an atheist. But suddenly how could you do that? So Bhakti Siddham has used this example sometimes in his preaching. In Bengali you say Shadigram Diya badang Banga Badam means peanuts or nuts, but peanuts.
So shaligram is Shaligram diya badam panga. Pretty much like Hindi. So anybody was using Kṛṣṇa’s property for their own sense gratification that he would say Shaliga via Badambana. You are like. You want to use Kṛṣṇa for your own Sanskritification. You want to take KA’s things and enjoy them. So such kinds of priests were there. I was once in South India, near Madurai. I went to this one temple and it was a beautiful temple, very ancient. One of the Divya dashes. One of the 108 holiest temples indicated by around the Mujech area, some Pranaya. So after seeing that, the head priest wanted to speak to me privately. And he said you are from foreign country surroundings originally? No, I live india. No. But you have contact the sea. I have two sons. So one son, he’s not very intelligent. He’s not good at education.
So I made him a priest. But I have one son. He’s very good education. I want to get him overseas. Good job. The good one he wants to send overseas for Māyā. And the one you know who couldn’t get another job, okay, make him a priest. He can sit there and give out Shar Namitra. This is the state of our Hindu Dharma. All the cream is going for Māyā and what’s left goes for their priesthood. So this is the kind of unfortunate situation we have. We need people. So by practicing Kṛṣṇa consciousness you become automatically in the mode of goodness. You gradually get transformed and you become a Vaishnava. Vaishnava gives all the good qualities of the Brahmanas. Even whether whatever your qualities may be ideas that as a Vaiava you do all your service.
Even if you’re a Vaishya, even if you’re a Shafiya or whatever, even if you’re a worker, you do everything for Kṛṣṇa. So the Vaishyavas are able to do everything but according to their nature they may prefer to do a particular activity or they may be more expert at that. Some people more expert at preaching, some are expert at managing, some are experts at business. And some are just expert at technical things and working and different technical things, hands on type things. So in Kṛṣṇa consciousness it doesn’t matter. It’s not like a caste system that okay, one’s better or worse. They’re all KA’s devotees, they’re all transcendental but according to our nature, we do a particular service that we feel happy in doing. Everybody should be fully absorbed in their service. When someone doesn’t have the right service, then they don’t feel satisfied.
Their mind doesn’t sit there, doesn’t get absorbed. We do our service and we do it for Kṛṣṇa directly as a devotional service. This was actually the direction of the Vishnu of our natural. They just do your duty to please Kṛṣṇa. We’re here, we’re directly doing what comes natural to us as a service to Kṛṣṇa, offering the results to Kṛṣṇa, who is a bit of a more focused directly on Kṛṣṇa devotional service. Where Varnashram was somewhat indirect. When Vhaitanya was offered this alternative of our national, he said, this is Baja, this is external. When you’re directly hearing about Kṛṣṇa, when you’re directly serving Kṛṣṇa, that’s transcendental. So we want to engage the people in this transcendental kind of going even beyond this. But for the general society you could see that how a type of Varṇa responsibility is important.
Like the Vaishas are supposed to be the stomach for society that’s supposed to be very charitable. You see this like the other day in the newspaper. You see Bill Gates is giving 200 million now for some health project to discover what are the diseases where there’s no commercial interest of the deep. Drug companies don’t research how to cure them. But actually people are suffering or some other big businessman is giving for United Nations $1 billion, somebody gaining. So being wealthy, if they give in charity, that’s considered to be very good for a wealthy person. So that way the wealthy people actually benefiting society, but they just keep becomes a big burden karmically for them. They just try to enjoy the money without using it for a good purpose. So Vaishyas by nature was supposed to be very charitable. That was their dharma.
Also the Kshatriyas are supposed to be very charitable. At the same time they’re to be shivolism to keep out all the miscreants. In some democratic countries in the third world, every government comes, said we’re going to stop corruption. Each one comes that we’re going to stop corruption. But everyone is always the same thing. There’s all this corruption going on. Have they any chance? Because so these Kshatriyas, they were supposed to be so highly principled that they would follow the Brahmanas and they would protect these principles of religion. So they would ensure that people were trained properly. I remember this in the Padma Quran, of course in Bhagavad Yanti Maharaj, and throughout the Purāṇas, he’s a figure because he was a very interesting personality. I mean, he had many material desires, like everyone.
And he got married to a resident from another planet, which is also pretty amazing, and fell very much in love with her. He got different kinds of relationships. And those things are focused on more in the Bhāgavatam. But in the Pagma Purāṇa, it also focuses a little bit more on a particular phase of his life where he met a Vaishya guru who instructed him to make his whole kingdom Pishta consciousness. And that would be the best thing for his. He was the ruler of the world, so the whole world. So he said if they establish that everyone worships Kṛṣṇa, Vishnu, that all the devas are worshipped as devotees and everybody chants the holy names of God. So in the previous Yuga, the probably that was Satya Yuga, not 100% sure. I think it’s up to Yuga.
He already established Kṛṣṇa Consciousness as a world religion. And because of doing that, as there was anyway SATA, Yoga and people, there was no pollution, There was no other problems, people. And he did it not by force, not by like some royal edict everybody has to do, otherwise you’re going to be punished. He did it by financing Brahmanas and sending them out to preach very dynamically. Everywhere it establishes by preaching. So through governmental support, he actually established Kṛṣṇa Consciousness. And people all over the world were chanting and that became the world religion. And as a result, nobody was growing old. Since nobody was performing any bad karmas, Nobody was growing old. Everybody got to like middle age, kind of little youthful age, and they just stayed at that age. So like this, it happened for three generations, and nobody was dying.
Since there was no other causes of death, and nobody was getting old and there was no disease. The whole world became like a kind of a vaikuṇṭha on earth. So the grandfather, the son and the grandson, they’re all living together, all looking the same. Nobody was getting old. So after a while, they were living for a long time. So this was a really big period of time. And so then Hindra, at that time, wherever the Indra was, he was going around the universe. And he went to Pataloka, and when he went to Narak Yamalok and there all the Yamadutas, they were totally frustrated. They said, what are we doing here? What’s the purpose of our existence? We’re supposed to bring people here in, punish them. There’s nobody dying. Your Yayati Maharaj has messed up your whole universal system. Nobody’s dying, we’re just sitting here.
It’s like when a fireman with no fires, you know, they’re sitting and playing cards or something like that. I don’t know. One thing I want to do since we’re doing, they are totally frustrated. Nothing to do normally in torture, you know, nobody in their brain. All the hells were just lying idle. So what to do? They had nothing. So they were complaining Indra and criticizing him that you are what kind of king of the three worlds are you. This Iati has done you in, you know, he’s overwhelmed your whole system. So somehow they got Indra into an ego thing. Yeah, that’s true. I didn’t think of it like that. And he decided that I am going to stop Vyati Maharaj. You heard about this?
So then he said he called Kamadev and he told Kamadev, I want you to, you know, like you do so many yogis and others send somebody, get him to fall down and let’s stop this whole thing. So Kama Devī went and studied the whole situation. But it was different. It wasn’t like he’s alone yogī, some forest meditating, you know, all alone, celibate for a long time. He’s a grihasta. He has regular relations with his wife. He loves his wife. He’s very Italian. Same time he’s chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa, he’s doing all the devotional service. So Kama Devī, he couldn’t find him. He went back in there instead of. I don’t, I can’t get to him. He’s like really well fortified. He’s completely well situated. It’s not like a yogī, an indra blew up manner. Why you nonsense. What you guys, we will give you an order.
You have to do it. I don’t care what it takes. Get him to fall down, Accommodate. So it’s not going to be easy. He’s a devotee, he’s protected, you know, I don’t know. It may take me many years. You give me a team of Devas to go down to earth. I have one plan and you give me about 50 devas and then 50 residents in your planet Apsaras and celestial beings. And then they have to come and live on earth with me. And then we will make a plan. Says whatever it takes to do it. I gotta stop this guy. It’s too much. Yes. So like the whole, you know where all the devas, everyone’s like, oh forget how they make this Yati Maharaj falling down and. But they couldn’t. He was so well situated that time.
They couldn’t really get him to break his vows. So then Kamini, he set up one. He made a drama troupe of all these beings from the higher planets who all very beautiful, very handsome, all took demons forms and look very beautiful. And so they started performing Vishnu Pastime, Vishnu Leela’s dramas, anything like that? Anything. I mean this king, his intelligence was very expanded over the whole world. As soon as there was something going on, he got the report. He sent spies check it out. I don’t want any kind of nonsense, you know, preached in my kingdom has to be. So the people went. But everything was according to the Shastra. It seemed alright. They gave the report. That seems to be okay.
So after many years of performing dramas and being checked out by different people, then the king himself wanted to see this drama performed. So they performed also. But everything really popular, very Kṛṣṇa conscious according to the books. So he watched. Of course, first few times they really had their guards up watching everything, you know, to see if there’s any mistake. But then after a while, everything was so pucker. They started to believe, you know, okay, these are reliable people and they perform nicely. So after a while they became the Imperial Gamma Troupe. They became the Royal Gamma. So it took them many years to actually infiltrate. There’s a whole like sting operation and the opposite. I mean that kind of interplanetary intrigue Here. This is all explained in the Padma Purāṇa, how sometimes even the devas go against devotees and for some different reason.
So finally, after a long time, then come the day said, okay, now we have the confidence of the king. He called his troop together, all the extraterrestrials and told them, this is what we’re going to do. Now we’re going to go into plan B. Everybody remember we have been waiting for this. This is our chance. I don’t know how far it’s going to go. This king is very well fortified spiritually. So this is the only thing I could think about doing. So this was the plan, okay. Then he told, this is our plan. During the drama. We’re going to commit a Kṛṣṇa Upara. We’re going to say something or do something which is offensive to the Lord. This offense is going to. When the king sees the offense, he’s going to be a party to it. Anyone who hears an offense, they’re party to it.
And for that moment he will have. The protection of the Lord will be reduced for him. Or withdrawn. But within a few seconds he will pray to the Lord forgiveness and then he will come after us and probably arrest us or kill us or something. So everything has to be done really exactly according to that sequence. Soon as the Akbaran happens, then I am going to hit him with every common Dave is Cupid, so he has all these lust arrows. I am going to hit him with all my lust arrows at one time. Whatever I got this completely nuke him with whatever I have. At the same time, the lead actress is an Apsara. She has to somehow slip and expose herself to the king some of her bodily parts. And then all this has to happen exactly at one time.
So then maybe a lusty thought will come in the king’s mind. That’s what we’re working for. And then that will be the beginning of the end for him, hopefully. But as soon as this happens, after this, we got about 10 seconds to immediately leave this planet. Although we’re going to be totally going to recover. This was their plan. Just to try to break the spirit of the king a little bit something all this years and years, just to make one lusty thought come in his mind. That’s how wonderful a devotee he was. I mean, whenever he had lust or anything, it was all directed to his wife. It was dovetailed properly. He wasn’t breaking any religious principles. So this was their plan. Big event. Everyone was there, King was there.
They were going to enjoy Kṛṣṇa Leela and this time the cube would just go for it. They go off the line, off the script and they say something offense the king of shots. He’s shocked. You know what they just did? They just did an offense against Kṛṣṇa. And then in that moment when he started in the state of shock, Cuban whammies him with all his arrows. The Apsara exposes herself a little bit. Whatever drops her, Sarika, whatever does something. And then since it exposes, doesn’t explain exactly how much the death then. So then at that moment with all this, you know, one last thought came in the mind of a king and immediately he started to age. Because he’s really old, you know, but because of all the devotional service he does in age, he started getting older. Character and grain.
Immediately he was this, Kisha, save me from this. I don’t. This, I don’t want this, that, you know, $2 man shelter. But for just whatever a few seconds there was, he aged. Everyone could see he went from like 25 to 40 or something all at one time. And everyone was Looking at him, what happened? He got old. And then by that time, the whole Dhamma troupe was already gone. You know, they looked farther and where are they going? No trace. They’d already left the planet. And Indra was really frustrated. All you could do for so many years, and look at that. You could. This is really hard, you know, I mean, you want me to make a devotee fall down? It’s not easy. Ultimately, he could never really get Iyati to fully fall down. It was the whole thing.
But finally he just left the world, went back to God. Thanks. You know, the great advantage, it goes on to the whole thing. It was a very big campaign to really infiltrate the earth. What I always found so interesting was how he was so successful. Make the whole world Ishtar conscious. And everybody was not even dying. Of course, Dharma, Kali Yuga. Probably everybody still dies, but they go back to Godhead. I don’t know. Maybe people live for a long time. They want me to speak on cloning. And here’s another element. We don’t die this January. Kṛṣṇa live forever. So this is what a good king could actually do. Or even one of these really wealthy people, they disagree. As a project, let’s make the world spiritualized. There’s a lot of religion of different kinds with very little spiritualism.
Recently, a couple of devotees went to see the president of India, this Muslim by religion, Mr. Kalam Karam. And they offered him some prasada and previously some given a Bhagavad Gītā. And he said that he was regularly reading and he was interested. And then when they offered him prasad, he said, are you religious or spiritual? And they say, spiritual. Then I will take it. So thoughtful people today, they’re concerned about the sectarian religious kind of presentation. They can appreciate that the world needs to be more spiritual. So Daiva Varnashram is to direct, to spiritualize the world, to have the people who are working for them. They’re part of this Daiva Varnashram program. So it’s very important that we have people who are dedicated to preaching. I don’t know if I brought with me. I don’t know if my secretary has the copy.
You know, it’s a book that was written by one Grihasta, helped by their wife from Middle east, free to preach where they tell their history, how they went to one country and there was no Kṛṣṇa consciousness there. They had a job there and they started doing satsang programs. And then when they learned about the bhakti bhiksha program, they started to establish a Bhakti Bhiksha program. And how over a period from no Kṛṣṇa conscious devotees in that country, now they have about 3,000 people sharing JAPA and hundreds of people doing 16 rounds and things like that. So they kind of give that whole how every Grihasta, everybody, no matter how there’s a chance that people can do this. They we’re actually free to preach. We don’t have to be only a full time temple preacher to preach. Obviously that’s a great opportunity.
If you can be in a temple and be a full time Brahmachari or Grihasta preacher, what could be? That’s like an ideal situation. But most people in the world work and have to maintain their families. In addition to doing that, it’s also possible to do tremendous amount of Kṛṣṇa service. And if the husband and wife work together as teams, taking care of the children, taking care of the business, taking care of whatever the material things and taking care of the preaching, you can achieve wonderful results. So they question whether sharing their realization about that. And we have seen that this type of husband wife teams around the world, they are doing a wonderful preaching in different countries all over the world. And so that’s a kind of a spiritualized Rehasta Ashram performing the Sankirta Yagya.
Our temple president at Honolulu Temple is husband and wife team. They’re co presidents. Kusa and. His husband Prabhupāda, secretary for many years. He was just at Mama. So they’re also the minister Sakara of Grihasta Ashram. Now they have this boat. So once traveling and doing the Grihasta Ashram and the other ones watching the temple and they go back to the 10 things. But here, this country, Manigrihastas, they’re doing their service in the temples Manigrihas is working outside for. So the idea is that everybody, according to their own nature, according to their capacity, they should do Kṛṣṇa a service. Whether it’s serving in the temple or whether it’s preaching from their home. Everybody should be practicing Kṛṣṇa consciousness as a daily routine.
So this kind of Daivavaranasram system is possible in Kali Yuga, not possible to categorize people anymore that are here or Kshatriya because people don’t tend to be so distinctly in one mode or another nowadays. It also is predicted in the Brahma. Which one is it? Not Brahma Vaivar, Brahma Vaivasa Prana. Yeah, Brahmadevar Chitrana. Because in the Previous verse, it talks about all the holy rivers. And by meditating in the holy rivers, by touching and bathing them, you get purified. So I thought that was a verse that was open. I wouldn’t sing that. Remember how all these rivers, when Kṛṣṇa was present on the planet, they came to Lord Kṛṣṇa. They were crying and Kṛṣṇa and Dwarka, they went to see him all the deities of the different rivers. And so they pushed Gaṅgā Devī ahead. And Kṛṣṇa asked him, what’s wrong?
Why are you all crying? And he was smiling and blessing all of them. And Gaṅgā Devī came forward. He said, my Lord, you blessed us by bathing in our holy waters. We were purified, were blessed. You took bath in our waters, you glanced over us. You freed us from all the sins that were accumulated. You gave us your association. And now we can see that just like when the sun is setting and the intensity of the sun goes down, you can tell it’s going to become nightfall. Very soon Swayamakṛṣṇa was about to leave the planet. His influence started to wind up. So they could already see the symptoms of diminished religiosity, diminished spirituality in the people. And they could see that Kali was going to come. They said, we feel that very soon you’re going to leave this world. And Kali is going to.
When you leave, you take with you religiosity, Dharma, Jñāna and Tapati and everything. And the whole world’s going to become in Kali. And everything’s going to be in ignorance and all this. We can’t live without your association. And when you leave, it’s going to be so bad. All these materialistic people will be bathing in our waters, will get overloaded with sins. And so what we all came here was to appeal to take us with you, to we want to also go with you. Then Kṛṣṇa smiled at them and said, you see, don’t worry, Association of a pure devotee is so great. Even if you see a pure devotee, you get purified. Even if you see a pure devotee, you get freed from your sins. And what this week, if you touch so you just tolerate for 5,000 years simple people bathing.
It is after 5,000 years is when the pure devotee will come. And he’s going to spread the holy name of Hari all over the world. And all over the world there’s going to be people who are chanting the holy names of my holy name. And the whole world is going to become Eka Varṇa. Use the word eka varṇa. Hari vakta 1 varṇa hari. Devotees of Hari and said in those Devotees, they’re all going to come to India and they’re going to bathe in your holy waters. And you will know them because they will be chanting the holy names. And this way you will get purified by them chanting while in the waters. And in this way the whole world is going to become spiritualized for 10,000 years. Dasa sahasvana, 10,000 years. Everyone will be a Harivhta to wait for that. After that 10,000 years is over.
Then it becomes, use the word Ghor Kali. It’s not like Gauravar. This is G H O r Ghor, heavy, black, deep Kali. It’s like the world becomes Kṛṣṇa conscious in a golden era for 10,000 years. Then after that, when people reject Kṛṣṇa again, when they revolt against whatever was the spiritual system. And they go, then they go heavy into tamas. So at that time you can all go subterranean. All the rivers can go under. The like dry up, literally drying up. They’re going beneath the surface and wait till Satyuga, then you come out again. So we’re just 5,020 or 5,070 years, 50 years. We’re just at the beginning. This is the twilight. The son Prabhupāda came just at 5,000 years and he brought the Harinam all over the world.
So right now it’s like the real urgent need to spread this chanting and spread the Hari now to everybody, get people to become Haribhaktas. And. Of course Kali doesn’t want that. So Kali, you know, tries to make people fall down or make them believe that they’re already eternal associates of the Lord. And they shouldn’t preach anymore. They should just talk about Kṛṣṇa, Leela and some holy place. Even though all this with Lord Chaitanya, all the associates came from below Vrindava and they were preaching, they were spreading the Harina. So right now it’s very important that we spread Kṛṣṇa consciousness. That’s why I used to write in Mauritius. Someone when I came, the immigration officer said Hare Kṛṣṇa. I gave him some prasada and tell thank you, It’s not too many.
That that’s when the immigration office will tell you, Hare Kṛṣṇa, take your prasad outside of India, Mauritius, one or two places. You know, I try to offer, you know, they take in Peru a little bit you have to offer like packets of candy. They have a factory there that makes Yogī bars, something. But given very few places they take. So they don’t say Hare Kṛṣṇa usually. Sid Mauricio said no problem. Always wanted this to be a Kṛṣṇa conscious island. So very happy to be here again and get purified by associating with all the nice Vaishnavas. Have some transcendental service here for purifying ourselves. And you can remember these holy rivers are how they were concerned to associate. Actually, I have heard in the Padma Purāṇa that says if you chant the name Gaṅgā, it’s like taking a bath in the Ganges.
If you’re within 100,000 yojanas, we’re well within 100,000. That’s 800,000 miles. So we’re within the range. We’re not that far. So you have a bat. Now we have to do our verb ashram. Hare Kṛṣṇa, hare Kṛṣṇa, hare hare hari ram ram. Any question? The dialogue Maharaj of the rivers, that’s in the. No, that’s in the. 125Th. Includes Bhāgavata as well as Arjun chanting my name and my glories. Bhagavad, Thomas thy glory said the Lord. Bhāgavatam is like when you see those all. When I was a child, I used to watch horror movies, hold up the crosses, something in the death area. The Bhāgavatam is the antidote for Kali, Bhāgavatam and the holy name. There was an era of age of Kali play going on. And then Kali was, you know, had this lust, anger, greed, all this chelas. And he was making his plan.
But then you could hear the sound of the holy name and he was getting sick. And then Prabhupāda, when he watched it, he got so excited. He was like. He was like a little child, you know, like so happy to see Kali getting sick. You know, everybody chant more. So Kali is like personification and everything bad. So you want the more he’s sick. It’s that good for all of us. Hari Kṛṣṇa. Anything else? Anyway, we have a full program today with this three, four days I am here, Happy to see all of you and open between all the programs to get a chance to talk. It’s going to be sharp at 12 because we only have one hour. We start at 12, finish at 1. So we have to be there five minutes to 12 and schedule. How long does it take to get there?
10 Minutes. That’s what I put on my schedule. 11:30, Be sure I get there at 12. Wednesdays. They got a little lunch too. At the same time. They come and meet. Is that Kṛṣṇa conscious philosophy or is this a general philosophy? Yeah, they put it that way so that it’s not sectarian type for the sound of the same. It kind of depends on the topic. The topic is that body we are talking about so many people and things like that. How’s everyone? I was feeling so much separation from Moshes devotees here many times in the past. So here I have been trying to come and all of the obstacles came up. One time I was in South Africa and I was going to just fly here for a day and make connection to London. So at least that way I could stop flying.
And then they cancelled my air mask flight. It’s on technical difficulty. It broke out, didn’t flow to South Africa. Since I was in a connected connection here the to well then I just rewrite it. They just reverted my unit and grossed my ticket and sent me to London. Then we had some legal tasks that I had to do india. So that took a lot of my time. But now that someone else is doing that full time so world free now. So it’s so hard to drag home. So happy to be here. And I was really because I promised to do this Panihati festival. I don’t want to miss that. I did it in Cape Town already. The province that Durach yacht and the southern Heng was here in the summer. So in the northern hemisphere they do it in June July.
So here they do Rathyatras in the summer they’re clammy. Happy is in June in northern hemisphere. So this equivalent of January here. Available. Mango sauce. There’s always something. I want to get Darshan and Vishnu. One day we can either have fast day it.
