 The following is a lecture given by His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami Mahārāja on February 1, 2003 - in Mauritius. The lecture begins with a reading from Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 5.19.20.

When the result of one tireless has activities mature, one gets an opportunity to associate with pure devotees of Lord Kṛṣṇa. As a result of associating with devotees, one gradually renders service to Lord Vasudeva who is transcendental freedom, attachment to the material world beyond the mind and heart and independent have everything else that Bhakti Yoga devotional service. The Lord Vasudeva is the real path of liberation. There. Important question of Brahman realization is the beginning of liberation and Paramātmā realization is still further advancement toward the realm of liberation.

But one achieves real liberation when he understands his position as an eternal servant of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Everyone is working in the wrong direction. When one becomes Brahma Buddha firstly realize one understands that he is not the body and that working in the bodily concept of life is useless and misdirected. Then his devotional service begins. As Kṛṣṇa says in Bhagavad Gītā 1864, One who has died transcendentally realizes the state of the minds of desires to have anything. He is equally disposed to every living entity in that state he attains pure devotional service unto me. Unquote. Devotional service is actual liberation. When one is attracted by the duty of the supreme Personality of Godhead and his mind is always engaged in the Lord’s lotus, He is no longer interested in subjects that do not help him in self realization.

In other words, he loses all attraction for maternal activities. In Taiteriya Upanishad 2007 it is said. The living entity becomes established in spiritual blissful life when he fully understands that his happiness definitely and spiritual self realization which is the basic principle of Nanda bliss and when he is eternally situated in the service of the Lord who has no other Lord about Him, Does anyone? The Bhaktivedanta Swami translation purport of the Śrīmad Bible becomes fifth cancel 19 chapter 20th verse in the matter of the island of Jambudwipa. After many births, when the results of one’s highest activities mature, one gets an opportunity to associate with pure devotees.

Then one is able to cut the knot of bondage to ignore it which found him because of varied As a result of associating with devotees, one gradually render service to Lord Vasudeva who is transcendental free from attachment to the material world beyond the mind and words and independence of everything else. I have made your good fortune for you. This is the normal situation. Normally at the minute of the birth someone higher than activities and mature ones. He picks up the most. The most fallen. The most fallen. The rascal. Even in our movement we’re having some rational. The difference is that in the Kṛṣṇakasha’s movement the rationale purify where outside the rest. Those that don’t get changed, It takes some of them. But by Kṛṣṇa consciousness gradually those defects are verified situated in devotional service. He said but the picture that got me the most attractive was the picture of Prabhupāda masooding and blessing. Not because I was attracted, you know, by Prabhupāda. I mean I didn’t. The reason in my mind was he had a very nice watch. And I wanted to have that watch because when I get out of jail I am ready to steal his watch. This is how bothered I was. This is My motivation somehow. So I wanted to go and I wanted to get that watch. I was dreaming about that watch for so many days. The watch actually in my mind it was already like it was just a matter of time. I was going to get that watch. So when I got out of the jail, when I went, I found. I went to an attempt. They said, no, Prabhupāda, somewhere else. So I went.

I went back and went over to where he was in order to see Prabhupāda. It took a couple days. It was not easy. So then by associating with the devotees and hearing at the time, when I got to see Prabhupāda, then I don’t know, something came over me. And Prabhupāda said, what is it that you would like? And then he said, actually, Prabhupāda, the reason I came here was to steal your watch. But now something changed in me. Why you want to steal the thing you take? It’s all about offered the watch. He said, no, the mountain had already crossed over that face. And he said, no, I just want to serve you. So somehow then Prabhupāda gave a lot of mercy and kept him in devotional service. Even though he had such a.

He was living in Juhu in those days, people lived in the trash hut was very austere. So he said, for me, it wasn’t austere for me, I would live in the street. And sometime when I go to jail, I thought it was after I give you a bed or a blanket, you know, something after that. So for me, this grasshop, nice prasadam. I was thinking, this is really opulent. You know, it wasn’t hard for me. I was so low that this was, you know. But for these devotees from the Point and other places, it was very austere to live in this grandson of the city here. So he explained that how he was there serving for a long time, but everyone knew they was. He was having this background. So he was cleaning the pots one day in the kitchen.

He heard that day there was initiation ceremony going on. So he asked he could go over and see it from the head of the kitchen. Okay, go and quickly come back. So then he went there and he’s looking and everybody sitting in line. Prabhupāda sitting there. And Prabhupāda looked and he called him over and said, you know exactly how he had it somehow. So you want initiation. Somehow. Ra was so merciful, even though he gave him a change. And so like this Harika was explaining how when he used to do book distribution they all had a quarter that I could. Every day they would collect 60 rupees 100 rupees. Some days he’d only distribute books for 60 rupees. Then he’d be shorter. So what to do? He had to make his quota. So then he would sometimes pick pocket and come.

He said I never did any more for myself. I come and give it to the deedee. He was being so Irish. But then granted, Prabhupāda found out no one anymore. And let me just explain how Prabhupāda was so merciless. He was such a fallen soul. And Prabhupāda of course then after that he became. Now he’s the director for this ātmā that you probably see over here on television. I don’t know that he’s the director and producer. Such a wonderful life. And he’s doing this wonderful service for sh. He got into the movie industry for a while. So that’s where he got trained up. He said they always gave me villain roles when he was acting. But then that way from acting he worked not. And some other shows he was explaining and how he was the person in a d activities.

But somehow for all the mercy of what Chitani was delivered. He said after I did in the Saints after I never saw for myself. So this change. Of heart is possible by devotional service. And so many people are grouped up. Prison preaching in Chennai. She’s a professor in a medical university and she’s also the staff doctor for the prisoners. So Dr. And she’s got programs for the prisoners and six different prisons. She does satsangs for them. And she came, she asks you what to do. There’s one person, he said he was an assassin. He killed so many people. But like this, you know, people actually have a change of heart completely. Some people are like this. Also in the drug rehabilitation centers in Malaysia. One of our devotees is a director. He was the director of a rehabilitation center.

Now he’s been made a national. I don’t know what we call it position but a national and a big name central office. So many devotees in different parts of the country where they have. And they find that people, the drug addicts to go through this Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra therapy. 60% Of them don’t go back to drugs, which is for them that’s like very high result. Normally about 80% go back. It’s not made. Everybody goes. It’s not that successful at all. Maybe on the 10th or something. Normally don’t go back Norway there’s very pleased because 60% are not touched back Chandigarh Kṛṣṇa they get the strength to give up this dependence on drugs. So practicing the problems. And even people who are insane, if they regularly hear the Śrīmad Bhagavad they can get cured in Bhāgavatam, the chanting of the holy name.

These are very powerful therapies. And. So normally it may take many times. Somehow handles bags like a bag. Somehow by association with the pure devotee or by hearing the holy names and hearing the Bhāgavatam one can get perfection even in a very short time. One has that association. Whether they deserve it or not. They should think that a very important. And they shouldn’t miss that opportunity to take up devotional service. Why promise them when you can cut the path of man usually with no mask condition, we don’t see beyond our bodily concept of life. And we just get balm in this unrelated chain of so very, very difficult. If I put it on silent mode or turn it off, then. By this association when I render service to Vasudeva. Actually this is kind of explaining the whole path of Vak.

In the eight hours from Swaddavity and Satsang associated with devotees then Vajanakri are starting to practice devotional service. So then after the wind is getting rid of the bad habits, then Nishta becoming thick and then Ruchi becomes getting a taste for chanting. Then Ashakti becoming attached and then Baba having ecstatic love. Bhakti nod. Thakur explained this in terms of sugar king. I tried to explain. I explained this example in Europe and nobody could understand what I was talking about because they didn’t have any idea about sugar cane. But maybe here, if I give this example, you will be able to relate with it. Maybe not because here all the sugar cane is cross satisfying a big spectrum. But india, I am a farmer for many years I was trying one of the crops to voucher. We don’t grow so much.

We grow many, maybe 50 acres or something. Some of that we feed to the elephant. Now elephant luxury. We let the elephant live here. So the example is that first you have your sugar cane stalk. If you have ripe sugar cane, then the stalk itself you can feel it. And you can chew on the sugar cane. And that’s like Sadhga, that first coming in panic and you then if you squeeze the sugar cream, you get juice, right? So the sugar cane juice is like Sadhu Sangam. It makes a little more sweet. Then if you cook the juice Down. Then you get. I just want to go by. I might leave out a progression. You cook it down. And then you get gourd like india. Then you can cook it down and cook in a little kind of cottage industry set up.

Probably don’t do that here. I have done this many times. Sometimes you do it day and night, just keep it going. Just cook the sugar green juice down and at that time all kinds of impurities rise atop the bubble. Take a little ladle and extract that off of joy. The local village dogs that go after that, they eat that. They get intoxicated from the sugar and howling all night. Then you get, when you get that, you get the gore put down where it’s liquid gour. Then if you take a little bit of liquid gour in a clay pot and start rubbing it with a wooden ladle. They rub it and then start somehow by the friction and the heat and the rubbing in the air, it crystallizes, forms a sugar crystal, a gore crystal. So then that the third stage was like a liquid gore.

That’s like your. Or next the vajana kriya. Then you put in that crystal, you put one crystal in it and the whole thing crystallizes and it all becomes crystallized, solidified. That’s why you can put many more kilos of bore in one of those tables and put water because it’s solidified and crystallized. That’s like your anatomous. Then you can also. But you can further refine the gourd. You can take that, you can cook it again and you can make it into coffee, guer coffee, guer candy. So it becomes a can, I mean a bullet. Then it becomes like a candy and that’s another stage. So that’s like Kṛṣṇa. Then you can take, at the present stage you take the gourd and you cook it and you take out to add milk.

You start taking out more impurities until you actually get it to the point where you have what dad’s call the name of a pure sugar. But it’s a natural raw sugar that. And that’s called kansari sugar. It’s a little golden color, raw sugar. It’s actually much better for you than white sugar. So then that’s like this ashakti. Then you can further refine, Then you can make that sugar into sugar candy. That’s a chef tea. Or you can make it into the sugar coffee. Or there’s another stage which is sugar candy, sugar crystallized candy. They put a thread in water and a crystal on it. And then it forms on the thread. Sugar, toffee, gourd, toffee and then rock. Each one is more sweet than the next, so use something. I don’t know if I left out anything, but that was what I.

As you go in your devotional service, it gets sweeter and sweeter and sweeter. We want to get everybody in that tasting of the nectar. Sometimes people cheat. We’re a cheat. Kṛṣṇa. This Harida is not the only thief that became a devotee. In Poland there brought Sabbath sitting in a class at a big public program. At the end of class, packs of people, maybe 500 people. At the end, there was one devotee. I asked a question. When devotees stood up and I had a question. It was more like a revelation. He said, actually once there was a music festival going on. There were devotees full of a book table. And they were selling books here and selling book banks and selling. So actually there were some very rowdy young people. I guess they had music festival. Three young kind of hooligans.

They came up and they went on opposite sides of the book table. They were distracting the book distributor. Can I see the book? Really? No. And on the other side, one of them stole a maguahit and put in his name. They ran off. I wanted to know what is the result of taking this healing. Because he said, actually, when these boys got back to their place, they were laughing. We got the Hare Mishtas. We stole their book. We got there because of election. By reading the Bhagavad Gītā. This boy said, actually, I am one of those three and I am your disciple. And the other boy, he’s Hirayanandamar’s disciple. And the third one is also your initiated disciple. He said, we all became the Lord. So we couldn’t know who cheated.

Who saw that I would give you pay the price they end up paying, giving their life. So just say it’s so powerful. Even they got who had the last laugh when they stole the car. So sometimes even summary still here. Beta distribution or something. You never know. Maybe there’s something what  will happen. So many amazing things happen once the people in this material. Some people are very pious. After many pious activities, they become. This is fantastic. Somehow even the following. No hope for them. They’re getting a chance. Why is that? You know the secret? Why. Secret thing I tell you. You see? You know that a great Nigerian he had praised for Lord Chania to come. When Lord Chania came, he was in disguise. How do I know it’s a fact. Many people knew that I was worshipping the Lord. How do I know it’s true? How do I know it’s my Lord? After our labor. I brought him. I brought him. He’s come here. And of course the one who doesn’t carry out the orders of the Guru that’s not really a disciple, but that’s fallen disciple. Adam. Adam. I have done it. I brought fished it down to this material world. I have done it. I have done it. Then Lord Suttami I said now you have to ask Aboor for me. You brought me here to the world. What are you bringing here for? What do you want? He said no. You come. That’s enough for me. You bring me all the way in there to tell me why you brought me here for you. But tell me what you want. You have to tell me.

You kept insisting on my. I want that. That the fallen souls should normally go in the opportunity for deliverance. They will be delivered. That all the fallen souls who are a little hopeless. The people normally. Normally all the big problems and shakspeare to get all the mercy that the father’s faults get the mercy for who normally don’t get the opportunity. Then the second thing I want is those people who are very proud who think they deserve their mercy. Because their. What a good lord to him is mercy. That’s why you see even the grave he was to come to him. The way to give Lord Shikhander’s mercy is to present ourselves very humbly. Of course for. Some of us that may not be difficult. But those very pious individuals, they have to somehow humble themselves. They want to get the mercy.

Find out some bad quality in yourself to feel vulnerable. I don’t have to search heart for that. But you know why yourself to people. So I don’t know if you can find any bad qualities yourselves. But you can find any somehow humble yourself and beg what you think have no. Because it’s a special tell Yuga. It’s always a Yuga of after gifts. Always something unusual. So in this Yuga are fallen. So get the advantage. Because everybody is born very fallen. They don’t have too much trouble actually to take. Even if you do pious activities while neglecting to do devotional service. That’s also quite deviation. It should really be serving this kind of activity. That’s why there is this home for Egypt. Otherwise normally only there’s very highest people that get the mercy. But now you see even a solid people are giving it.

We should be more to ourselves more color than the star of the street and more tolerant than a tree. Then we can always chant the holy names of Kṛṣṇa. Hare Kṛṣṇa. Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare. How people are generally working in the bodily concept of life doesn’t matter Hindu. How many people are working in the bodily concept of life? I asked india how many people they think are working in the bodily concept. Even though that may be Hindu majority countries, but the very General estimation was 98, 99%. Understand that I am not this body. It’s good so that one out of a thousand of them actually realize it. And one out of a thousand to actually realize it that they’re spirit. So many do get the actual liberation of all.

Very rare to find even one Kṛṣṇa Bhakta before being Kṛṣṇa Bhaksa is very rare with a very confidential think. Most people they can’t understand why. So every book they see that somebody can have so much religion. They can’t understand even they may be in the truth. They don’t understand why someone would be always. Wait till you get old say things like that. Don’t use this friend to enjoy. My mother told me that. She told me why you want to do this Persona. Wait until you get older than you. What is my daddy inside you? When we realize that I am a spirit soul and therefore I am not the body, then why would you try to make your body happy? Body sometimes make a happy, sometimes we get sick body happiness. But the smarter I am not the body, I am the spirit. So.

So as the spirit is happy, then everything becomes happy. So we realized that I love the body. We want to make Kṛṣṇa happy. By making Kṛṣṇa happy. Because I am part of Kṛṣṇa, then I become happy. So by self driving by devotional service to become happy. The more we try to make Kṛṣṇa happy, the more we become happy. So we’re not feeling happy, we’re not making Kṛṣṇa happy. We’re not chanting our own properly. Or we’re not doing any devotional service. Or we’re simply fault finding and dealing with some other kinds of deviation. We should try to make Kṛṣṇa happy. Whatever makes Kṛṣṇa happy, we do that whether we like it or not. If we do that, then we will feel a little spiritual happiness. That’s the secret to being happy. Please Kṛṣṇa. Sam Sidney Hari Potshana all perfection is given when we please. Hari.

Somebody understands this. Or maybe come seek some devotional service. But explain that because of our time as we’re going to get a certain amount of mature happiness. You don’t have to worry for that. It’s already been just like nobody has to automatically without Anxiety, you get to suffer. Without any other suffering. Anybody have a problem with pain or suffering? Anybody who did it, feel anything? If anybody wanted? Does anyone master this? You know, crazy muscle? Other than crazy stuff, we will get it anyway. So just like that, you put it all on it. You’re going to get some happiness. The sacred devolving simply wants to please Rishta. So he Śrīshta Prasad. Even if you don’t want it, Even at night. And all your purpose is simply eating to please Kṛṣṇa. No other purpose. Even without this language, you will feel so happy. Just like here.

One minute is raining, next minute is sun shining. Always changing. Summer, winter, spring, summer, winter, summer, falls, winter, spring. In India you have six seasons always changing. So you have never tolerated. Sometimes with me happy, sometimes you will be something. You’re happy, you get a nice child. What’s the child? Surely there’s going to be happiness and distress all the time. That no longer is the basis of happiness for the devotees. Devotees, basis for satisfaction and happiness is the self and the material things that happen. They tolerate the happiness, tolerate the suffering. It’s not being is the byproduct of being in the material world. Devotees, we should chant, we should serve. We should get attracted to Kṛṣṇa’s beauty, get attracted to Kṛṣṇa’s service. And don’t ever separate ourselves from serving the Lord. No matter what happens. Considering the second boom, Why.

When he gave the boon, he didn’t say. Anyone who proud thinks they’re very qualified. They won’t get my mercy. Except for Islam. They can be proud and bullish. They’re making it. But in this. They should know the science of devotional service. They should always humble themselves. First thing I was taught was I asked. Somebody gave me advice when I joined the Tahibasha. Whenever you approach a spiritual answer, first thing you should do is you should humble yourself. If you say how fallen you are, you should ask for mercy. This is loyalty. That person then you should ask for mercy. I remember that stuck in my mind. This is my daily habit. Since I saw problems for so many days, I saw hundreds of times. After a while, The. Devotees get established firmly that Kṛṣṇa consciousness is spiritual life.

D says that in the family spiritual business, peaceful life is fully understand that happiness depends on our self realization. The real inner happiness that we’re hating for doesn’t come from it’s very superficial. Just like. By putting time and completed devotees, by associating with the devotee, we can understand devotional service and we can get and start practicing devotional service. It’s simply karma that cannot deviate from devotional service. It’s your free  will. It’s your own desire. If you want to not do devotional service, you desire that you want to do something else. You can’t blame the karma. Someone who’s very tired, maybe they’re making to do for him. But then they also want to do things in the mode of women. There was one person who wanted to do pious activities, left his devotional service to do pious activities. That’s also called a for devotion.

Some people are beginning their devotional service to do simple activities. Some are beginning to do direct activities. We shouldn’t need devotional service. We should continue doing that. It. Was. Six months and eight months for Bo. It. Ram. Like bowl of water, cheese, rice. Okay. Sa. Foreign. Sa. We all can agree to the five deities over the five pranas. The pranas are responsible for digestion, health, the heart, intelligence, all these things. The Prana and Apana. Apana. 4 Evacuate different 5 years in the body. Each one has got some purpose. Here. And the Lord’s overlook here. Shudder. Sabika. No, thank you.
