20030318 Śrī Gaura-pūrṇimā Lecture

 The following is a lecture given by His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami Mahārāja on December 26, 2002 – in Melbourne, Australia. The lecture begins with a reading from Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 7.12.11.

Okay.

The Gopīs loved hearts are Kṛṣṇa. Was this due to the realization that Kṛṣṇa was super soul? No. Actually the Gopīs have attained a very high status and they are not aware of Kṛṣṇa’s position. They are under the influence of Yoga Māyā who covers KA’s supreme position but lets them see the wonderful qualities of Kṛṣṇa. So their love for Kṛṣṇa is love for Kṛṣṇa. Not because they think Kṛṣṇa  will do something to them. They love Kṛṣṇa, but it’s not because they think, oh, Kṛṣṇa  will take me to heaven or Kṛṣṇa  will make me rich, right? Or Kṛṣṇa  will let my son go to college in America or something like that. No, it’s that they love Kṛṣṇa because Kṛṣṇa is lovable. They see the qualities of Kṛṣṇa that make him lovable. This is something that is known only to the followers of Lord Chaitanya.

We, however, cannot imitate that state. Because the Gopīs already have very exalted love for Kṛṣṇa. And they do not need to know Kṛṣṇa’s supreme position. Because Kṛṣṇa’s qualities themselves invoke love. But we cannot exhibit. Just like Yashoda thinks that Kṛṣṇa is her little boy, she thinks that she has to protect Kṛṣṇa and that if she doesn’t treat Kṛṣṇa  will die. She thinks this. But we cannot imitate that state. That is a state attained only by very high devotees who already have very great love for Kṛṣṇa. So we are aware of Ka’s position and we express our love for Kṛṣṇa through the mood of worshipping. And by our mood of worshipping we can perceive in Kṛṣṇa these qualities that are very wonderful.

If we try to imitate love of the inhabitants of Vrindavan, when we have not attained that state, we  will not see these wonderful beautiful qualities of Kṛṣṇa. But in our state as exemplified by Lord Chaitanya who wanted to see these very extraordinary qualities of Kṛṣṇa. He saw these qualities of Kṛṣṇa through his mood of a worshipful soul servant. So we should follow the example of.

And not try to imitate the love of the Gopīs. But imitate this love as shown by Lord Chana. And our express our love of Kṛṣṇa through our bud of worship and service. And to this note and.

Wonderful immaculate conception of Lord Chaitanya where he entered into the heart of Jagannath Miśra like a glowing effulgent light.

And.

Then went to the Mind, heart. And then went to the heart of Mother Sachi. This way Mother Sachi conceived. And since that time things started to change in their household. Jagannath Miśra was a poor Brahmin. He was not rich, very simple as far as Brahmanas were concerned. And he, The Brahmanas, they have to do different things to get donations. But now things change and people just walk up to him. My dear Brahmin, I’d like to give you a donation. And then they start giving him things. Gold, rings, clothing. Never experienced like this. Money was coming to him without any effort. Just like Lakshmi had come to his house, just everything had changed. So one day he was explaining this to Mother Sachi that something has changed now in our house, everything is become different.

And Mother Sachi, she also said, well, I noticed that there’s some kind of celestial beings flying in the sky over me. And then they’re offering folded hands and prayers. Sometime I got frightened by these ghosts or what are they, I don’t know. And I even say machine of prayer now, when devas are normally invisible to human beings. When the devas realized they were being seen by Mother Sachi, she started chanting. And what’s going on, how she sees us? They’re running, flying away, out of sight, out of distance, out of her vision. We’re not supposed to be visible. How can she see us? So these Devas, they’re offering very long prayers. In fact, many pages in the Chaitanya Bhagavad, the prayers of the demigods to Lord Chaitanya in the womb. Where they analyze how there are many different incarnations who come in all the yugas.

But they go partial mercy, they give liberation, other benedictions. But to get the love of Kṛṣṇa, that is very difficult. That’s the most difficult thing to get. Only Lord Kṛṣṇa himself gives out love of Kṛṣṇa. But even Lord Kṛṣṇa doesn’t give it out freely. He gives it out only to those who surrender to him. So the Devas, they were lamenting how they always miss out on getting this love for Kṛṣṇa. But they were praying to Lord Chaitanya that this time in this incarnation, that they could get this priceless jewel, this invaluable gem of pure love for Kṛṣṇa. When we may take a very cheap Kṛṣṇa bhakti, we don’t realize how hard it is to get again. Normally people are motivated to do religious things because of desire for more sense gratification or because they want to get liberated from all the suffering.

Actually have a spontaneous desire to serve Kṛṣṇa, to have A natural attraction to Kṛṣṇa. What the speaker even have a love for Kṛṣṇa, like the Gopīs naturally have for Kṛṣṇa, is something very special, very rare, priceless, most valuable jewel that there is. So they were praying for this blessing from Lord Chaitanya. They said, actually we don’t want any material blessings. In fact, in the heavenly planets, we already have too much sense gratification. We don’t need any more of that. So much sense gratification that it’s a big distraction. The only problems we face is sometimes we’re attacked by demons who also want to enjoy that sense gratification by plundering it. Otherwise, the biggest problem is we’re so much distracted by this sense gratification that we don’t try to get your Kṛṣṇa bhakti. We don’t try to get your devotion.

We think that this material sense gratification is very nice. And we forget the real happiness. So this way we’re cheated. Material nature is cheating us, depriving us from the real happiness, the real ecstasy, the real bliss that we’re really aiming for. Because material happiness, even in heavenly quantities is not fully satisfying. It’s very superficial compared to the real happiness and the real experience of love for Kṛṣṇa, which actually comes from the soul, from the Ātmā, where all this material happiness is just the sensation and the external mind and senses. So therefore, they fell at the feet of Lord Chaitanya begged them that in this incarnation, please accept us as your devotees. Give us this mercy. You are going to be giving out the mercy freely to even the most fallen souls. Please, we, your devotees, don’t deprive us.

We don’t want to be the only ones who don’t get the mercy. We should also feel so much anxiety being a human being born in such a place as the planet Earth, Bharatvarsa, when Lord Caitanya Sankirtan movement is here, if we blow it, if we miss out and don’t get Kṛṣṇa Prema in this lifetime, we really have messed up our valuable human form of life. What could be the greater loss, what could be the greater misfortune than to be so close to having pure love of Kṛṣṇa and not getting into it? Selling out for some cheap sex ramification or for some paltry position in the material world, or for some kind of name or fame or anything that Māyā can offer us would be the worst misfortune that we could endure. So the Devas, they were desperate.

If we had only a little bit of that desperation. We take it so for granted, this Kṛṣṇa consciousness which we got given to us. We can’t even figure out how were so, so fortunate. Simply Prabhupāda made our fortune for us. He gave us this mercy directly and through his representatives. Even we have no qualifications. Maybe you are all qualified. But I have negative qualifications. Somehow I got in this position to be practicing Kṛṣṇa Consciousness. Even I am not able to do it at all. Very well. Certainly we want to not mess up so like this. So many things were happening before the birth of Mother Sachi’s baby. Sachinandana. Goranga. Goranga. Goranga. Check it out. Misrab looking at his wife. So you’re a falchion. You’re glowing in the dark. What’s happened? Why you’re so effulgent? You’re not the same.

I mean, what’s happened to you, little thing. But of course, they never really figured it out. One day they had a surprise visitor to their house. A Doita Ācārya came visiting. Dwight Ācārya as the senior most Brahmin of Nandavi. And he’s Brahman of Vaishnava. So coming to a humble young couple’s house like Jagannath, Mr. And Mother Sachi. They were very honored. And they offered him a sip. And they bathed his feet and offered him an aarti. The normal thing you do for another senior Vihasta Brāhmaṇa who comes to your house, who you want to respect. They offer him obeisances. Then they ask what is the how he’s so blessed by the association to visit? I mean without asking a titi. Like just spontaneously coming to their house. How can we serve you? What is the cause of your coming?

Advaita was just looking at Mother Sachi. He had something in his mind. Then he got up and he said. He took the hand of Jagannath Miśra. He said, I. I  will tell you everything. One day I  will tell you everything. For now I cannot tell you. Then he walked seven times around Mother Sachi. Seven times around. There’s another mantra of the same symbol. He walked around. And then Jagga Vish again. Why is he walking around my wife? What’s going on here? What does this mean? Advaita Gosa, can you tell me what’s going on? I  will tell you in due time. For now you do this one thing. You get some sandalwood paste. You get some nice scented oil. You rub it on the tummy of your wife over the baby. Then he laughs. The two. I said, what’s going on here?

Well, they can figure. Obviously he’s not worshiping me Mother Sachs he said must be my baby. Must be that we have a very special Sark group child who’s going to do something very wonderful. Maybe a great, you know, poet or king as you know, some very special person, a great Brahmin trying to figure it out, very great personality. So like this, so many things were happening then that very special day was approaching.

The day.

Falgrud Pūrṇimā Gora Pūrṇimā Gi. Actually but before that something else happened. Ten months had passed by because mother thought she conceived in the month of Ma I mean January and 1406, second year. So she should bear her child in November, December, 10 months later. But nothing was happening. No labor pain, no sight. So she went to her father, Nilambar Chakra Kavarti and asked what’s happening in an astrological check. And he said that your child is going to be born late. Too bad we don’t have such expert astrologers now. You know, the doctor is just too Caesarean or something.

Now.

But he lake when he could say no, the child  will be born, should be born. 13 Months  will be the completion of the pregnancy. So Mika Rishi experienced doctors, finally you don’t have these astrologers in our modern hospitals.

So.

She was patiently waiting and of course Nilavar Chakravarti could get a glimpse of wow, this is a very special child. It’s going to be born. And then that day came Gorpunima. When this particular Gorpunima, see on the full moons you get lunar eclipse sometimes of course, sometimes you get a solar eclipse also. But that’s on the Amabasya side. On the Purima side you get the full moons, you get the lunar eclipse. So the. Custom india is when there’s a lunar or solar eclipse you take a holy bath. Just like Kṛṣṇa went to Kurukshetra after the Kurduchepta war for the solar eclipse to bathe there in the Prabhakunda. And that Kunda is still there. I don’t know if you have seen it. It’s very beautiful. It’s a wonderful place that Kṛṣṇa bathed there himself.

So that was the custom to go to some holy place and baby in the water while the eclipse is crossing over that protects you from any kind of negative influence. And so at that time the whole Nabadim went to the river. Hundreds of thousands or maybe millions, I don’t know how many people exactly were there but many hundreds of thousands of people all in the Ganges river chanting holy names. Usually they wouldn’t chant the holy names because of kind of a superstition that if you chanted the holy names you would take away from the potency of the holy name. You had to. Because the holy name was so pure and very pure. So you drain out the holy name. This is some speculation that Brahman has had. But they figured out that when you’re in the Ganges, it’s the water is pure.

So you’re not going to be contaminating the holy name. So then you can chant. So all these hundreds of thousands of people were chanting. Sam. So from the river there was this massive sound of Haribo Bovingna, Hare Kṛṣṇa. And it reached the house of Shiva’s Thakur. His house got fired from the Ganges. It reached the house of all the Vaishnavas. And they were so happy. They said what?

What?

Who says that eclipse is inauspicious? This is the best day we have ever seen. Everybody’s chanting the holy name. What could better? What could be more wonderful? The whole world is filled with the sounds of the Harinam. So Lord Chaitanya arranged this environment that he could appear in the midst of Harinam Sankirtan. Then when he appeared, everyone was chanting and describes that the whole world just naturally felt very heavy. We hope that all of you today of the appearance of Lord Shaitanya this anniversary  will also feel from your heart very, very happy. That’s the mood that permeated the atmosphere. Everywhere people were just feeling so happy. Haridas Takurgan Mah Santipur that side. He used to start dancing in ecstasy. Just start dancing. He felt so ecstatic. Atwaita was in Santi. We also started dancing in ecstasy.

And the people, they start shouting louder and louder the holy names. Once mother Sakshi, she got the child in her arms and saw beautiful golden form of the Lord. Called her husband Pati. Then he came and said, look, here is our son. Just love. How beautiful. The Jagannath Mr. Took his son in his hands. Already his hands are ajad Ulami da Bhujo. Long up to the knees. All the miniature features are there. The three lines on his neck. Little miniature. Everything is very beautiful. Golden color, raised like a moon. And his hair was just standing on end. He was feeling so much ecstasy. So much. Wow. He felt so happy. He wanted to give charity to everyone. But he was very poor. Brahman. What  will they give? So in his mind he was just giving charity to everyone. Gold and silver is more.

The mood was like that. Kṛṣṇa blessed us with this beautiful child. So beautiful, so many wonderful qualities. So he was in this very ecstatic mood of Vatsali above. So we can understand how significant this war Purima makes the whole world happy. This one thing Lord Caitanya’s appearance was meant to do was to take away the suffering in the world and make everyone happy. Sometimes people ask the Hare Kṛṣṇa devotees, what are you doing for the people in the world? What could be a greater gift than to give the world happiness, peace, love. These are the things that Lord Chaitanya is contributing. At that time, all the devas, not all, but I mean many devas took the form of villagers. And they visited the house of Mother Sachin like they were navigants of their place. So many Brahmins, everyone.

Mother Sachi said, who are all these very beautiful Brahmin ladies coming in, bringing gifts, blessing the baby with kusa grass on the head and some Aksha rice with the turmeric and different giving gifts. She said, so many beautiful dominant ladies. I never saw them before where they all came from. So the extraterrestrial residents of higher planets are coming down just to give. Just to get a darshan of Lord Chaitanya, the supreme Lord. The yoga pita where the Lord touched came from the fourth dimension here to this dimension, came from that spiritual dimension here to the visible. From Aprakhat Leela to Prakhat Leela. Unmanifest pastime to manifest pastime. So now everybody could see. But when they see, is covered by yoga Māyā. But these devas, they knew this is the supreme Lord. This is the absolute truth Karma yen in this world.

So they’re very anxious to see, very anxious to get the association. What a better opportunity to come touch the Lord when he’s a little baby in the form of some motherly neighbor Rahman or giving. So they also nectar homes. They’re what they want the Krita Shakti. So they’re trying to get that mercy also. So like this. There was a big festival in the house of Jagannath Mishra. Soon as the word came, a beautiful baby was born. Musicians gathered outside playing music. Different professional reciters came and were reciting. So many people were coming and taking the normal kind of thing they were doing in those days to get little. They want another kind of kipa. They say they get some donations, go to the house of some. We have just had a baby. But here was something different.

Because these are all very special people just showing up. They had another higher birth. They were drawn there by the super soul. And they all felt spontaneously motivated to glorify this newborn leader. The next day there was a big feast. The Jagannath Mishra tomorrow. Jagannath Mishra feast Mother Sītā Ṭhākurani. Where’s Bhakti Churumara? Running out of birth. Past Sītā Thaka riding came an Apollo. She was such a respectable lady. She wouldn’t walk in the public. She would only travel carried by mirrors. Like you see maybe in Egyptian movies or something. That was the custom, really. High class Brahminal ladies, queens, princesses. They all mixed with the public. So she was being carried and Napoleon covered with cloth on the side. So then as she arrived at the house of Jagannath Miśra, Mother Sachi. She came down with her royal gifts.

Special tiger tooth, embodied net and gold for protection of the baby. Said a tiger tooth protects the baby. You see that machine? He has a few. Then she had all kinds of like.

Herbs,.

Different scented, essential things. She gave. She. He had some turmeric, some kusa grass, some fused rice. All auspicious things to take away any unauspiciousness from the child. To give a blessing. So it reminded me like in. Like when Christ appears, you have the three wise men coming and giving herbs and things like that. The Christian navigator.

Tradition.

So there was like that people were coming and giving these auspicious articles to the baby Chaitanya. This one Barak. So people heard the word spread very fast that Jagannath Mr. Has a golden baby. Very beautiful golden baby. Many people wanted to sing. It was a very wonderful mood at that time in Navideen. And naturally everyone was talking about this child. The Satchi Nanda, the Satchi Kumar child of mother Sachi. So one other thing, of course were discussing when were on our brick Grooma. When went to Janu Dweeb. And how Janu Muni, he had drunk the Ganges. And after some heartfelt worship and prayers of Baghi Maharaj. He remanifested the dunga on his body. So she rerouted. She was rerouted away from Janudweep. And she came this side, very close to Lord Caitanya’s birthplace.

So when she got next to Lord Chaitanya’s birthplace, she stopped flowing because it was some. This whole pastime must have happened very near to Go Pūrṇimā. Because it was just a few days before Gor Pūrṇimā. So she stopped. Bhagi Maharaj, he’s carving with his special mystical chariot. Which is digging a riverbed into the Bengal soil. To make a pathway for the Gaṅgā. He’s digging and digging, going back and forth. The Ganges famous for having a winding route because he’s supposed to slow down the Ganges which came from another planet from just splashing everywhere. He’s digging. He looks back again, no Ganges. So what happened? So he retraces his steps there. He sees the Ganges water is there now. But she stopped. Just like there was a glass across she stopped. All kinds of surprises. And I thought it was neat.

It was a big yagya to get the Gangya down to Sagar Island. Going to go there and visit Sagar, see the Ashram and Kapila Muni. But he was so this Bagi Maharaj he was very, you know, obviously concerned. Now what happened now why the Gang Jesus is not coming. So he was praying to the Gaṅgā please why don’t you come. So then the Gaṅgā communicated with him that in this place the golden avatar. I am ready. You can come right now. They can do a bhajan and I will be right there. I am waiting for the appearance anniversary of this golden avatar who appears Yuga. That means that Gor Pūrṇimā is holy before, during and after Lord Shaitanya’s appearance. Even millions of years before Gor Pūrṇimā was a holy day. In fact they celebrate Holi on his holy name. And she said whence?

Because Lord Chaitanya left on that day Kṛṣṇa Prema is available here. So I want to wait to get to Kṛṣṇa Prema Then I will go with you. So Gangma main wanted to get Kṛṣṇa Prema. How many want Kṛṣṇa Prema? So this Kṛṣṇa Prema is there from the getting. She waited for the Gord Pūrṇimā to get the blessing of Kṛṣṇa Prema. And then she continued on to the Sagar Sangam with the ocean where she went to the lower planet. So many things happen to the. That’s why we go to the Gaṅgā to get some Kṛṣṇa Premajit in his holy name. Because I pulled out few devotees on this day who were drowning. So I was very careful. One day, one person I gave initiation I went to the Ganges my post initiation for Purnimatic.

There’s so many people those days the Garanchi’s bank was very high and he was in the midst of many people. But he was drowning same my disciple and he was waiting in time. But somehow everybody’s flashing and playing. Nobody’s watching Right next to them someone is drowning. So I dined him. Somehow I got him and bring him out. He’s a guru Name he saved me twice today. But I lost also two disciples, one disciple I lost. I was not there and nobody else was able to save him. So $1. Be very careful. I don’t know what happens. Maybe it’s maybe auspicious. But we want you to preach all over the world. Just give this Kṛṣṇa drink. So be very careful. We need all the help we can get. It’s not time to go back here.

So like this Kṛṣṇa Prema Prabhayati Lord Shaitan is the greatest benefactor giving us what has never been given so freely before. When Śrīla Prabhupāda arrived in that Atlanta temple and he saw the Gordon Tai deeds there, tears welled up in his eyes. And he said, just see how Lord Chaitanya Nithyananda are so merciful. They have come to this distant place far away from Māyā Bordam. In such a distant forsaken place like America. We think here we’re isolated. This is the center of the universe. This is the place where the Lord touched in the spiritual vision, the Nevas vision, the interplanetary vision. This is the most important place. Maybe now the superpowers, they come and go. Two years ago Soviet Union was a superpower. Now it’s just a power. Now America thinks superpower. We don’t know how long this power is coming for.

200 Years ago America was the place of the buffaloes. What the real power is Satchinanama has told us Deepa Shakti power of mercy from the Lord. So any country can get that. Now they don’t have to be as materially advanced. Even American can get it. Anyone can get it. And they just take that mercy of Lord Chaitanya. It’s free for anyone. And my wife was saw. Here they are in America. Here they are in this place. At Lena he just was so overwhelmed with how merciful born Chaitanya is to be there present in that place. And then he taught the devotees how to sing that song. I don’t have my voice really finished today. I don’t know if the song the volley like to sing it. But he. Jewel amongst all the avatars. Even with this yoga.

Narasiṁhary Nasingh Dev taught Prahlad how to do yoga asanas, the different incarnations. Naranarayan taught how to do meditation. Ramchandra was having them do fire Yagyans Panithananda Goranga he  will Ananda Karna. They’re giving simply the sweet part. The Prabhupāda compared it to a big feast with the bitters and the Sabjis and the spinaches and all the different preparations. And at the end of a Bengali menu you have the sweets.

So.

In watch your time as Leela you have the sweets first fight for the sweets. Like Gujarati sweets first cable alumni. In fact only the blissful part. There are no austerities. You don’t have to wade in the cold freezing waters of the Ganges or do have difficult austerities. Heavy fire yogyas or something. It’s simply chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. We’re so grateful for His Holiness Achina Maharaj for this year. Keeping up the chanting. There’s so many different activities. I hope many people took advantage sometime of this chanting. We cooked a little bit on a safari during the GBC meetings. We’re very thankful. His Holiness Tamal Vishta Goswami. We got everyone last year engaged in chanting the holy names. I remember that during Prabhupāda’s presence here in Gora Pūrṇimā sometimes he engaged the devotees in chanting all day long. Whole day for morning, tonight Kīrtana.

They made like you know, different Yatras would take a time, one hour, 10 to 11. And they would come and they would chant. And by rotation they would keep the chanting all day long until after the Abhishek. So the whole day it’s not worth doing all night. But there was more special. But I want everyone to be chanting a lot of Gifta. Especially on this holy occasion. You know Janmasmi, read the Kṛṣṇa book from beginning to end. As one of the Brattas. We don’t have a Chaitanya book. Bless me. I’d like to write such a book for my purification. Combining all additional dhilas from all the.

We started but then didn’t finish it. This very happy day. Chanting the holy names. Day when we can get the mercy of Lord Chaitanya very easily. And just like when Lord Chaitanya was actually made. It was made by the ladies and men both. Of course. Because we are so here. We also have ladies bathing Lord Chaitanya. And we have men bathing Lord Chaitanya. And we got one for donors and mix husband and wife can go and bathe together. Imagine. So we have three different bathing opportunities. Everybody can do some Abhishek. Hope you all hooked your quan shell or lotes or whatever it is to do the bathing. It’s a wonderful opportunity. And also in the nighttime the517 lamps. It’s really wonderful. I light so many lamps before the Lord. Special Seva. So so much happens in Vasava Chanting, hearing, reading, bathing, distributing Prasada.

So you’re assisting Jagannath. They said why we’re disturbing Prasada today we’re fasting. The Prabhupāda said, look at this many people. They don’t fast. They’re going to eat some karmic foods or some oga. Better than eat prasadam. Those who are fasting, they will fast. They’re not going to eat. The people who eat are those who they’re not fasting. So give them prasad. And for tomorrow, of course, even the devotees fasting, everybody feasts. So like this. This is a rejoicing day. Just like Jagannath Mishra. He was leading everyone so he can help Jagannath.

The name of Jagannath Mishra killing all the people. So Bhakti Churuma is supposed to be here already. He sent a message 15 minutes ago. He’d be here 10 minutes. I told him I am at 5. Thank you very much for this lecture. I have a question. Since quite some time we have the concept that Lord Kṛṣṇa can appear in the form of his holy name, in the form of the deity. Could you talk maybe on this particular day a little bit how to request Caitanya Mahāprabhu to appear in the heart of earth and devotion? I think we as Vaishnavas hold the strong opinion that the Lord has appeared obviously in His Leela. For. Let me say, for. Yes, 500. What is it? 570 Years ago. But he can also appear in the mind or the heart of the devotee. If that heart is made a Dharm, a holy place. Prabhupāda, he said that this is possible in terms of Kṛṣṇa. So you are our expert on Caitanya Mahāprabhu.

Please tell us how we can make Caitanya Mahanaprabhu appear in our lives or in the movement and so on.
