The following is a lecture given by His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami Mahārāja on April 28, 2006 – in Balarāmadeśa. The lecture begins with a reading from Bhagavad-gītā 10.6.

Translation by His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami: The seven great sages and before them the four other great sages and the Manus [progenitors of mankind] come from Me, born from My mind, and all the living beings populating the various planets descend from them.

Purport: The Lord is giving a genealogical synopsis of the universal population. Brahmā is the original creature born out of the energy of the Supreme Lord, who is known as Hiraṇyagarbha. And from Brahmā all the seven great sages, and before them four other great sages, named Sanaka, Sananda, Sanātana and Sanat-kumāra, and the fourteen Manus, are manifested. All these twenty-five great sages are known as the patriarchs of the living entities all over the universe. There are innumerable universes and innumerable planets within each universe, and each planet is full of population of different varieties. All of them are born of these twenty-five patriarchs. Brahmā underwent penance for one thousand years of the demigods before he realized by the grace of Kṛṣṇa how to create. Then from Brahmā came Sanaka, Sananda, Sanātana and Sanat-kumāra, then Rudra, and then the seven sages, and in this way all the brāhmaṇas and kṣatriyas are born out of the energy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Brahmā is known as Prapitāmaha, the grandfather, and Kṛṣṇa is known as Prapitāmaha, the father of the grandfather. That is stated in the Eleventh Chapter of the Bhagavad-gītā (11.39).

* * *

That’s very interesting, Because us modern scientists are always trying to figure out, the archaeologists especially the missing link. How do the animals mutate into human beings? They still haven’t found it. They’re looking for the missing link.

Sometimes they find some animal that looks somewhat human, some special monkey or something. They think maybe this is the link. But then later some other scientists say, no, it’s still the monkey, or no, it is a human. It’s not half monkey, half human because they think that things are evolved. But here Krishna says that the Manus are the progenitors of mankind and they’re born out of the mind of Brahma, coming from his mind. Somehow Manu populates humans in different parts of the universe, and in this planet he populated the humans. So we’re expatriates on this planet from some other planet, from some other sphere. We’re the descendants of Manu. We’re not the descendants of the monkeys. Is your Great grandfather. A monkey? No. So Vent. Originally we come from Manu. And from Manu before that we came from Brahmā.

And then before Brahma, there’s Kṛṣṇa. In his expansion is Viṣṇu. So this is the summary synopsis of universal population. How to create the population of the universe. It’s not an easy thing. It says Brahma meditated for a thousand years, not our years. Years of the Devas. One of their. Days is our six months, and their night is our six months. So day and night is one year. So one year. Our one year is 365 days. But that’s. Anyway, you can figure it out with your calculator. A day of the day of us is one of our years. So that means one of their years is 365 of our days of our years. Right. If they have 365 days in a year, She meditated for a thousand years, 365,000 years to get the blessing from Kṛṣṇa. How do you create karma?

Muni meditated for 10,000 years in order to get a good wife so he could have a good child. Sometimes people get married and they expect that automatically we’re married, we’re going to have children. Sometimes they have children. Sometimes they have good children. Sometimes their children are. What’s that? So. This month is the month of Vaiśākha in the spiritual. In the Vaishnav calendar, it’s called Madhusūdana. Three days. Two days from now is Akshay Tritiya. In the Padma Purana, it said this month is very special. Anyone who performs Japa, deity worship, puja, dances before Kṛṣṇa, gives in charity, takes holy baths and does all those other auspicious things, they get a hundred times the benefit disavetes. Good month for solving your problems. There’s a history that once there was Brahmin who was healthy, beautiful wife. But he was very poor.

In spite of their best efforts, he couldn’t conceive any children. There was no reason why, according to the doctors. But he was not able to have a child. He was feeling very frustrated. Normally the wife feels more frustrated. But in this case he felt very frustrated. He wanted his son. So he told his wife that I am so frustrated. We don’t have any children, we don’t have any money. And she said, why do you feel frustrated? Not having children doesn’t necessarily mean bad because you can have different kind of children. You can have very nice children. Like all these children here. Or there are other kinds of children. There’s five types of children. You know the five Types of children. There’s children who are always demanding from the parents and never giving to the family. They’re called debtor children.

Someone who is owed money from a previous life in order to get paid back. He becomes a son and he wants to get money back from the family. So he takes all the service from the parents. But he doesn’t serve his parents or her parents. Then there’s one that just caused trouble in the family. Two kinds are there. One kind is called the bad karma child. Because of some bad karma you get a child who is there just to trouble you. Another kind is. Enemy child. An enemy from another life wants to get back at you so prays just that I can become their son and give them lots of trouble. So three kinds of children are trouble. They have no children. At least you don’t have any trouble. The fourth kind is called suputra or suputrī.

They are very submissive, religious, Kṛṣṇa conscious. They do what? They try to help the family. They perform srod after the parents die. They are the good children. And there is a fifth kind called udasin. Udasin means they’re not against the family. They’re not for the family. They’re just like. They’re like. How do you say that in English? They don’t care. I don’t care. But on their own way, not for the. So the wife said, look it, only one kind of child is very good. Three are very bad. And one is neither very good or very bad at all. So why should we lament? What’s Krishna’s mercy on us? No, no. But I want a son. I want a so said. I am thinking to become an expatriate. I will go overseas and make money in some foreign land.

Maybe heard about some island in some sea somewhere where you could get a job. Should I get a job somewhere and make some money and I will send you the money. That way at least you will have some money. She says, well, right now I have no money and I have no children. But at least I have a husband. If you go and work overseas then I won’t have a husband either. So I don’t think it’s a very good idea. I have another idea. You are frustrated because of no money and no children. I heard that nearby, in a village the great Rishi Vasishta Muni has come to visit. He is Sri Kal Gyan. He knows past, present and future. Why don’t you go to see him and see what he has to say? Why we’re in this situation. So he said, okay.

And he went to see Vasishtha Muni. Offered him some fruit, offered some obeisances and sweet words. Vasishtha said, how can I help you? He said, you say that I am suffering. I am very poor. In spite of all my efforts. Also I don’t have any children. I don’t know why that is. He said, well, in your previous life you were doing business. You were a dairy man and many cows, lots of milk. But you were born in a Sudra family. But you are doing business. But you are very miserly. You didn’t spend any money on your wife. She was always not properly dressed, not properly cared for. And your children, you also didn’t spend any money on your children. You used to take your money and bury it in the ground.

What was the use working hard, making money then burying it, hiding it, not spending it. So then you died untimely. And your family members, they were very frustrated because they don’t know also where you buried. So although they had a rich husband, they all died in poverty. So because you caused so much suffering to your children, to your mother, to your wife, this life you don’t have any children and you don’t have any money. Okay, now that all makes sense to me. But how did I get born as a Brahmina? And how did I get such a good wife? She is very philosophical. She is very deep. Well, in your life, Vasishtha Muni said you didn’t do anything good except one thing. One day in the month of Baishak, a Vaishnav visited your house. And for three days you discussed about Krishna.

And you did some devotional activities. That was all. I think I can see good in your life. Because of that you got a good wife and you were born as a Brahmin. So what’s the solution for all the bad karmas that I did? Said, well, now is the month of Vaishak. It has seven days left. So you can do some spiritual activities, some devotional activities now. And that can counteract your PDS bad karmas. So you have 7 days. So take advantage 3 days did you pretty good. Now give 7 days a chance. So for 7 days he was practicing devotional activities. Then afterwards all his problems were solved. He realized purpose of life is to serve Krishna. So rest of his life he engaged in devotional service. He also solved his economical problems, became solvent. He also had nice children.

Everything got solved from this month of Baishak spiritually and materially. So. Of course, one week, whatever we wish at one more the spiritual things. But some devotees have some material needs that they want to fulfill to do nicer service to Kṛṣṇa. Or they may have some desire they want to fulfill so they can move on and go deeper in their spiritual life. In Malaysia, in the month of Dhammadar, they have about 66 namahathas and five or six bhakti vrikshas. Every one of the nahtas does one or two home visits every day. And that’s the half hour bhajan kirtan in people’s homes to give them good blessings. But I told them to do it telling this story of Baishak. Because Damodar also is two months in a year are very special. Baishak and Damodar that Kartik. But nobody does it in the month of Baishak.

So they do 580 house visits. That’s why they’re very high in the world. Congregational development. Actually I could show you my congregational development report, but I forgot and now it’s too late. The next time I can show it, you can remind me. Need a white wall? Here’s a white wall. So no problem. Balaram Desh is the top five congregational yatra in the world. But in the whole world of temples, yatras, everything. I don’t remember what number you are, but not as high because nobody sends in the scores. Who’s responsible for you to send in the scores? You won’t find that person. So I hope, I request you, please find someone who keeps track of how many people come. Even you don’t have a lot of bhakti rickshaws. You get credit for all the people that come to your programs.

You get credit for all the programs you do to help people. But we’re trying to compare and see how many active members we have in the world. But this is definitely one of the nicest programs. Very happy to come here. But if we can do this program during this month, those who have apartments maybe just have a little kirtan in their house. 5, 6 People go. Someone can volunteer. That would be very nice. Help people purify their flats. That’s the one thing is that having the bhakti vriksha and Namhat groups, the programs are normally held in the flats or the villas or houses or whatever. So that kirtan in their houses purifies the house. Here we have most of the programs in the temple. So the temple is pure. But the temples are always pure.

But houses also need a little purification, little bit of uplift. So this civilized Human life means to. Dedicate ourselves to pleasing the Lord. We have to appreciate whatever religions there are who are dedicated to pleasing supreme Lord. Whether Islam or Christianity or Jewish, our own Vedic culture is a very scientific way of how to do that. So that people can dedicate every action, their thoughts, their words, their deeds, their eating, their sleeping, their cleaning. There’s a system for everything so that all the activities can be one we can remember. Kṛṣṇa the Brahmanas, they have all these different rituals to help them for most people, even for the modern Brahmanas. I know many children of Brahmanas said I had Upanayana, but I threw the thread, I don’t use it, why should I care it?

This is what’s going on in our modern IITs and others institutions. So because they don’t see words to use. But saying your Upanayan, saying your Anik, your three Sandhyas at least three times a day, they’re remembering the Lord. Now Lord Caitanya, he simplified things. It’s okay if one wants to practice. Today we didn’t have any Brahmin initiations, so we had Vaishnava initiations. We also can give Pancharatric initiations. People can chant their mantras three times a day. But in addition we chant 16 rounds of Hare Kṛṣṇa which means practically two hours in the day we chant. And by chanting the two hours or one and a half hours, that definitely purifies the consciousness and someone can’t today many people took blessings of aspirant. How many are aspirants? Some of the children. So they may chant two rounds or one round or eight rounds.

We also have Siksha program, not connected with any guru where one chants one round or four rounds or eight rounds. We’re trying to encourage, build a habit to chant every day. Sam Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hari. Well, if. You want to start or you want to increase at least this is a very good month to do it. Maybe for those people who are doing everything, it doesn’t make a lot of difference because they do everything all the 12 months. But say somebody is just doing a little bit. Well, they can do a little bit more on this month and get a lot more bonus. Maybe they can’t do 16 rounds every month, but they can do this month. Maybe they can’t be vegetarian every month, but they can be this month and get some special boost.

Just like I was taking a walk in one of the local markets and they said for three days only 50% off. Another store said 25% off. Megasil. So we never. I just walk because it’s too hot outside. So I walk inside sometimes in the mall. But because it said 25% discount, we thought, okay, let’s go inside. Maybe there’s something we want to buy. So we found only nothing fits me. I am the wrong size. Only the socks we found. We bought five pair of socks for 3.5 dinar and got 25% discount. So that’s what Prabhupada said, that these special months, like Dharmadar, like Baishak, Mother, Sudan, they especially meant to attract new customers because of the big sale. So then I was a new customer. I never went to that store. I thought, okay, let’s look what they have.

So maybe someone not thinking, let me chant more. I am doing one round. I am not doing any rounds. I don’t chant Hare Krishna. They said, okay, this month I get a special blessing. Let me chant little bit every day this month. Then I get 100 times bonus. So good. To attract a new customer, you should put special. If you could put sign special, 99% discount. Like if you make hundred times, that’s like 99% discount. What do you want to buy? Computer? Nothing. You won’t say. Say somebody wants to buy a car for 10,000 dinar. He can get now for how much? 100 Dinar. Just to get. It’s a very good deal. So if you’re not fully doing everything anyway, if you’re doing 16 rounds, getting up for Mangala, dechanting, worshipping, nothing to say.

But if there’s something you can increase, it’s a good month to do it. It’s an extra blessing for the devotees they’re giving. Of course, sometimes still people do everything they do the month. Still they don’t have a child or they don’t. That. If we had Vasistha Muni, we could ask, what’s the karma? But many times it may work. Sometimes there’s heavier karmas that we may have done in the past. There’s a story of a Medha Vati who had committed some offense. And even though she worshipped Shiva, she did many things. But she couldn’t get a husband in this life. She saw Shiva and asked him, I want a husband. I want a husband. I want a husband, I want a husband. He said, okay, you can get. But now you get five husbands, because you asked me five times.

But in your next life as Draupadi, The law of karma, very hard to understand. So here we should see Krishna. He’s the source of the whole universe, source of everyone. And from Krishna comes Brahma. There comes manuscript comes great Rishis like spiritual angels, material angels. There’s material angels and spiritual angels. So we call them. We have Rishis Devas. We have more like detailed description. So whether you want something spiritual or whether you just want something material or want something spiritual says one should engage in devotional service. There’s no other recommended better path. Akamo Sarva Kamova, Moksha Kamo Udharudi, Tibrena Bhakti, Joguena, Jjeta Purushamparam. Whether one has no desires there a pure devotee Sarvakama. They have so many desires. Wealth, children, cars, videos, whatever. Whatever desires they have then if they have.

Moksha Kama, desire to get liberation then still they should go Tibrena Bhakti, Joge, Najeta, Purushambaram. They should perform uninterrupted steady devotional service to please the supreme personality of God here Hari. So Chaitanya Mahaprabhu recommended we should chant Hare Krishna. We should read the Gita and the Bhagavatam and we should worship Lord Kṛṣṇa. So today we’re chanting Hare Krishna. When we worship we also chant. Hope that you all have a wonderful Marusudhan month, Bhaishak month and hope all the devotees work together cooperatively. One thing is that be careful. So far this door is not soundproofed. Someone could hear one time what it sounds like when you do these loud kirtans outside. But especially if the door is open, which is very rare today we opened it for the Yangya because all the room was smoky. There was a big kirtan going on.

Still when you leave the building, just leave. Don’t hang in the front. We have no problem. We’re legally here. But we don’t want to disturb any neighbors and have any complaints. Just be good neighbors so we don’t make any enemies. Akhoi Trithaya is the anniversary of the beginning of Satay Yuga and any worship you do, any charity you do it. Supposed to last till the end of the universe. Akwe they go Akoi Akshoi indestructible doesn’t diminish some special good karma. Special Sukriti good karma. I will be going to Bishaka Patnam and if I get your blessings, maybe I can have darshan of Baraha Narasinghadev and be able to perform some kind of puja for him. Yeah. Akshay Treati has a special day. Simha Chalam. Once a year the deity is uncovered from sandalwood and then replaced on the sandalwood. So now worship their lordships.

Thank you very much.
