20230304 Hearing the Dāna-Līlā, Nityānanda Dances Displaying All the Symptoms of Ecstatic Love

The following is a Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Book Compilation given by His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami Mahārāja on March 4th,2023 in Śrī Dhāma Māyāpur, India.

mūkaṁ karoti vācālaṁ paṅguṁ laṅghayate girim
yat-kṛpā tam ahaṁ vande śrī-guruṁ dīna-tāraṇam
paramānandaṁ mādhavaṁ śrī caitanya iśvaram

Hare Kṛṣṇa! Dear Devotees! Today we will continue with the compilation of Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Book.

Today's chapter is entitled as: Hearing the Dāna-Līlā, Nityānanda Dances Displaying All the Symptoms of Ecstatic Love
Under the section: The Pastimes of Nityānanda

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.371

śrī-gadādhara dāsera mandire—

eka-dina gadādhara-dāsera mandire
āilena tāne prīti karibāra tare

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Nityānanda came one day, to the temple of Gadādhara dāsa, He came for the purpose of pleasing Gadādhara dāsa.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.372

nityasiddha vraja-jana gadādharadāsera akṛtrima gopībhāva avaidha ānukaraṇika kṛtrima sakhībhekīra pāṣaṇḍatā nahe—

gopī-bhāve gadādhara-dāsa mahāśaya
haiyā āchena ati parānanda-maya

Jayapatākā Swami: Gadādhara dāsa Mahāśaya, in the mood of a gopī, as a result he was extremely filled with transcendental ecstasy.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.373

mastake kariyā gaṅgā-jalera kalasa
niravadhi ḍāke,—“ke kinibe go-rasa?”

Jayapatākā Swami: Carrying a pot of Ganges water on His head, He was constantly crying out, “Who will purchase milk, who wants to buy milk?”

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.374

śrī-gadādhara-mandirera śrī-bālagopāla-mūrtike śrī-nityānandera bakṣe sthāpana—

śrī-bāla-gopāla-mūrti tāna devālaya
āchena parama-lāvaṇyera samuccaya

Jayapatākā Swami: The deity of Śrī Bāla-gopāla which was present in Gadādhara dāsa’s mandira, was the Supreme aggregation of all beauties.

So, Gadādhara dāsa’s temple had Bāla-Gopāla deity which was most beautiful.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.375

dekhi’ bāla-gopālera mūrti manohara
prīte nityānanda lailā vakṣera upara

Jayapatākā Swami: Seeing that enchanting Deity of Bāla-gopāla, lovingly, Lord Nityānanda embraced the Deity to His chest.

Lord Nityānanda seeing His old friend Kanhaiya, He embraced the Deity to His chest.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.376

ananta-hṛdaye dekhi’ śrī-bāla-gopāla
sarva-gaṇe hari-dhvani karena viśāla

Jayapatākā Swami: On the chest or the heart of Lord Nityānanda, who is non-different from Anantadeva, everyone saw the Śrī Bāla-gopāla Deity and all the devotees chanted the names of Hari, very loudly. Hari Bol! Hari Bol! Hari Bol!.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.377

huṅkāra kariyā nityānanda-malla-rāya
karite lāgilā nṛtya gopāla-līlāya

Jayapatākā Swami: Roaring loudly, Lord Nityānanda, the king of wrestlers began to dance in the pastime of gopāla.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.378

śrī-nityānanda-prabhura śrī-mādhavānandera dānakhaṇḍa-gāna-śravaṇa o bhāvāveśa—

dāna-khaṇḍa gāyena mādhavānanda ghoṣa
śuni’ avadhūta-siṁha parama santoṣa

Jayapatākā Swami: Dāna-līlā was sung by Mādhavānanda Ghoṣa and hearing this Avadhūtasiṁha, Lord Nityānanda became greatly satisfied.

Purport (By His Divine Grace Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura Śrīla Prabhupāda): The phrase dāna-khaṇḍa-gāna refers to a song describing Kṛṣṇa’s dāna-līlā, or pastime of charging tax, which is elaborately described in [Rūpa Gosvāmīs] Dāna-keli-kaumudī.

Jayapatākā Swami: Dāna-līlā As the son of Nanda Mahārāja, who was the king of Vraja, Lord Kṛṣṇa He was taking toll tax from the gopīs and this pastime had many rasas.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.379

bhāgyavanta mādhavera hena kanṭha-dhvani
śunite āviṣṭa haya avadhūta-maṇi

Jayapatākā Swami: The fortunate Mādhava’s voice was such that by hearing it, the crest jewel of avadhūtas (Lord Nityānanda) became fully raptured.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.380

ei-rūpa līlā tāna nija-prema-raṅge
sukṛti śrī-gadādhara dāsa kari’ saṅge

Jayapatākā Swami: These are the transcendental pastimes of Lord Nityānanda who enjoyed His own ecstatic love taking the pious Śrī Gadādhara dasa along with Him.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.381

śrī-gadādharadāsera akṛtrima nityasiddha gopī-bhāva—

gopī-bhāve bāhya nāhi gadādhara dāse
niravadhi āpanāke ’gopī hena vāse

Jayapatākā Swami: Gadādhara dāsa, He was fully absorbed in the mood of gopī and he would not come out of that consciousness, constanltly he was considering himslef as a gopī and he was thus absorbed in that pastime.

Purport (By His Divine Grace Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura Śrīla Prabhupāda): Śrī Gadādhara dāsa always remained absorbed in his constitutional position and did not externally accept the dress of a sakhī. He certainly was always absorbed in the mood of a gopī, but he did not display duplicity by wearing a gopīs dress.

Jayapatākā Swami: Sakhībekhī is someone who wears a saree, bangles even though he is a man. Here Gadādhara dāsa, he was naturally in the mood of gopī, He didn’t wear any female cloth he was just absorbed in the mood of a gopī.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.382

dāna-khaṇḍa-līlā-śravaṇe śrī-nityānandera nṛtya o premabhaktira vikāra—

dāna-khaṇḍa-līlāśuni’ nityānanda-rāya
ye nṛtya karena, tāhā varṇana nā yāya

Jayapatākā Swami: Hearing the dāna-līlā song, Lord Nityānanda-rāya performed such a wonderful dance that cannot be described.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.383

prema-bhakti-vikārera yata āche nāma
saba prakāśiyā nṛtya kare anupāma

Jayapatākā Swami: All the names that exist for ecstatic love transformation, they manifested in Lord Nityānanda, in His dancing and His dance was incomparable.

Purport (By His Divine Grace Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura Śrīla Prabhupāda): There are eight types of sāttvika-bhāvas, or transcendental symptoms, and thirty-three kinds of sañcāri-bhāvas, or continuously existing ecstatic symptoms.

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Nityānanda, He was displaying every ecstatic symptom, so to mention all of them is not possible.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.384

vidyutera prāya nṛtya gatira bhaṅgimā
kibā se adbhuta bhuja-cālana-mahimā

Jayapatākā Swami: Almost like lightning were Lord Nityānanda's dancing postures. What a wonderful glorious movement of His arms!

So, Lord Nityānanda’s dancing was so natural and spontaneous, and so rapid that it just enchanted everyone.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.385

ki vā se nayana-bhaṅgī, ki sundara hāsa
kibā se adbhuta śira-kampana-vilāsa

Jayapatākā Swami: What wonderful eye movements! What a beautiful smile! What a wonderful movement of His head, He was enjoying!

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.386

ekatra kariyā dui caraṇa sundara
kibā yoḍe yoḍe lampha dena manohara

Jayapatākā Swami: He kept His two lotus feet together beautifully, He jumped in an enchanting way keeping His feet together He jumped about!

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.387

ye-dike cāhena nityānanda prema-rase
sei-dike strī-puruṣe kṛṣṇa-rase bhāse

Jayapatākā Swami: In whatever direction Lord Nityānanda glanced in the ecstatic mellow of love, in those directions, the women and men floated in the mellows of love for Kṛṣṇa.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.388

hena se karena kṛpā-dṛṣṭi atiśaya
parānande deha-smṛti kāra nā thākaya

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Nityānanda, He had such a merciful glance which He freely gave that everyone was absorbed in transcendental happiness and no one was thinking of their body.

Sometimes we see that it is explained that they did not have remembrance of their body, it means that they are so ecstatic that their consciousness was beyond the physical platform and they were fully absorbed in the loving thoughts of Kṛṣṇa.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.389

ye bhakti vāñchena yogīndrādi-muni-gaṇe
nityānanda-prasāde se bhuñje ye-te-jane

Jayapatākā Swami: The pure devotion which was the aspiration of the best of the yogīs and munis, by Lord Nityānanda’s mercy was relished by everyone (even the foolish, wretched, fallen, and distressed persons).

So, even the great yogīs and great munis they desire pure Kṛṣṇa-prema and they do tapasyā, penances and austerities to achieve that. But simply by the glance of Lord Nityānanda everyone was getting such perfections. Hari Bol! Hari Bol! Jaya Nitāi!

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.390

hasti-sama jana nā khāile tina dina
calite nā pāre, deha haya ati kṣīṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: If a man is strong like an elephant but he does not eat for three days, he cannot move and his body will become very weak.

Purport (By His Divine Grace Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura Śrīla Prabhupāda): If a human being as strong as an elephant fasts for three days, he loses the ability to walk and his body becomes weak.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.391

eka-māsa eka śiśu nā kare āhāra
tathāpiha siṁha-prāya saba vyavahāra

Jayapatākā Swami: Even after a month each and every child did not eat anything, nevertheless their actions were like a lion. So, such was the mercy of Lord Nityānanda, that even if people did not eat for a month, they would still be as strong as they can be.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.392

hena śakti prakāśena nityānanda-rāya
tathāpi nā bujhe keha caitanya-māyāya

Jayapatākā Swami: Such transcendental potency was manifested by Lord Nityānanda-rāya, still no one could understand what was happening, by Lord Caitanya’s illusory energy.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.393

ei-mata kata-dina premānanda-rase
gadādhara dāsera mandire prabhu vaise

Jayapatākā Swami: In this way, for some days, absorbed in the mellows of ecstatic love, Lord Nityānanda stayed in the house of Gadādhara dāsa.

Caitanya Bhāgavata, Antya-khaṇḍa 5.394

bāhya nāhi gadādhara dāsera śarīre
niravadhi ’hari-bala’ balāya sabāre

Jayapatākā Swami: There was no external material consciousness in Gadādhara dāsa’s body. He was constantly inducing everyone to chant, “Hari bol!” “Hari bol!” “Hari Hari bol!”
