The following is a Darśana Lecture on Lord Caitanya’s Teaching Days given by His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami Mahārāja on May 3, 1982 – in Detroit, Michigan, USA.

Sa the heart is Namaste. Hello Dunstan. Kṛṣṇa has always noted that when Lord Kṛṣṇa left the material universe that we are in accompanied by knowledge, by geography and their associates. When the whole world has become dark the simultaneously rising and that darkness just like the sun which gives light to the souls bewildered in the darkness and illusions of at this age of Kali, the age of the passage to the age of iron light of the Bhāgavatam in light of the Bhagavad Gītā needed to be personally demonstrated. No one could demonstrate the practice of Gītā Padava more than Kṛṣṇa himself in his own to number four be devotees. In other words, when Keitanya Mahāprabhu appears of course you know that the whole world was chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa because of the eclipse. Because of the eclipse of the moon.

So one of the pastimes that Lord Chetanu had was known as Divya Villar or he had the pastime of education. He didn’t require much training. As soon as heard something, he would immediately know it. You would memorize it, you would suspect it. Because after all we took some people know of everything. But he would it appeared to be a first time. In fact, one time before. Between those times Lord Chaitanov didn’t show his devotional characteristics of virtue.

He was more obviously just a very proud and very indefeble scholar. At the same time he was very mellow, he was very soft. But no one could patient. How does he know every scripture without studying? Maybe he’s some demigod or something. People were thinking, oh, he may be a part of Vishnu as part of. Who is this Brahmin and Lord Chaitanya?

You see, he would sit with his students by this bank of the Ganges. And it was just like with the four kumaras. They went to the tbe Naran araying and so many narrow words and pages. And they all assembled. They’d also be present in Those species like that was a whole new living. What they taught me would be the explaining communist philosophical and technical points regarding the scientist culture in the Vedas. And everyone was becoming there. And every day his fame was spreading more and more. And every day 10 new students would come and bow down and touch the trees and said trees this way. Gradually by hundreds and thousands. And then again I will disprove that and then reprove the original point. There were no comments. In fact, it was described that time to describe what it was like with Lord Chaitanya, with all of his students. So various comparisons were given. One they said, well, it was like the moon and the stars.

But he said, no, the moon and the stars is not a proper explanation because the moon has got pakman. You know, whatever you call craters, it has, you know, blemishes. And the moon goes through different cycles. And when you go to the. But Lord Caitanya, his association was such that it was always impeachment and there wasn’t any darkness nor any violence. So that example doesn’t exactly suit that symbol. Then another example to explain. Remember what. There were three examples I gave. But each of them were not quite up to sometimes load Chaitanya he would take his student and they would just go throughout the out. And he was just like Kṛṣṇa would go through Mathurā and he walked through Mathurā and he met the laundry man. He met the different people and the florist and the.

He said, I guarantee that this oil has got such a good scent that you put it on now and tomorrow morning the scent will still be there. And like this was going to all these. You can imagine how fortunate they work to be able to get this association with. So then you go back to the Gantis and for six hours a day you teach the students. Another example, they said, is like Brihajpati. Like brihajpati with all of the demigods. This example also because BHA was favorable only particularly to the demigod. He started his Sanghir kind of movement in the obviously much to the satisfaction of all his devotees. Still the temptation thing has been moved in his different aspects. Nitinanda Purdue he used to go around the whole nine islands of Navatude. And there’s a nine day parishyam, a five day parishyam, two day parishyam. The Lord Nananda will do the five day parchment one day and one night N he so excited. One day he took all of the holy places of the first island. But it’s actually the last island that we visited for the island itself. This year we had very nice Harikama in Māyā Port. You rush the whole way, take your plane to the city. Then you jump off. You take your, you know, electric train and then you take your fast. And then we get up to the ferry dock. Of course we see that Śrī Paul Pradish come out of India to bring us the Christmas consciousness movement of a great personal sacrifice he was. And then similarly he would send devotees all over the world. I know that one very unfortunate and one very difficult thing that happened. I happened to be called up to Apollo 5 to the Navana wildfire there agītātion. They had some food come and try to do something. And when the devotees arrested those seeds and then took them to the police, then a bunch of other relatives went back to the mountain and did it around the villages. But they killed these people. They got all riled up. And then the whole village came out and then to hang all the men. And so then they tried to attack the temple. But.

But at any case, the devotees were able to repel any type of. They didn’t expect any response that they received. But the devotees who told them. And if the devotees were very instant, they call it consistent, make a report that we have been attacked. But we didn’t realize that because it was all a politically motivated thing. The politicians had already told the police that particular police came there. And he gave his story to the police. Well, he come to the police station and put them all at border, the vehicle from the police station. And then they’re listening. So they were sitting in a small room outside in an office there, waiting to be tracked over to the main port in Christinagar, which is about 10 kilometers, about 8 miles away. And the group had already came over.

The communist leader, he came over and he said to the policeman, why you are keeping this criminal sitting here on the chair? Put him in the lockup, put him. And they had a special lockup which was only 4ft high and where people would pass you in. And there was just cockroaches and dirt. And I told the. That’s like the worst place. It’s like Lord, you know. And so the communist, he ordered that the. He was a presidential leader there. He ordered that you put Bhavana Mahaj inside here. And they made him put the devotees inside, lash out. And then they had the paddy wagon. They said they won’t go by paddy wagon. I said, I want you to tie a rope around. Around their neck and their waist. You drag them to the street in protection.

Let the people sit down there and let the people see what type of criminals these are, these Americans and others coming here. We know that. So the police had. They didn’t want to. They said, well, no, it’s not. The man says, no, you must tie them up by wood. So then they tied up the devotees by weight, one after another with His w along the way and the guy had to kill them. And they dragged them. And the people in the whole town, they all lined up. One of the devotees of the town gave cartas and he just took the car. Everyone responded and the people. When the people saw the way that they were being treated, no one disrespected the devotees. The people started to cry. People would see the devotees and die down seeing the way that they were being offended.

Nobody could have done much disrespect, much to the cessation of the communist leader. Then were taken and put into the jail. By that time I called from. I just got to the next day with some Delhi and we got a court order that we could bring them to Sodom every day. And they said they were afraid that we would contaminate the other prisons. So what they did was they allowed prisoners to go out at one time. They said that they didn’t want the other prisoners to hurt us. We can’t do anything anyway. There was a time when you could leave your cell and go out and walk in the courtyard. So whatever time that the other ones were allowed to go out that time the devotees were. And vice versa, the devotees were leaving all the time. Big prick.

Every once in a while I was very much down to be locked up into ending in jail. And the whole prison started saying Hare Kṛṣṇa. In fact, it even hit the papers that everyone in the Kṛṣṇagar jail is saying Hari Kṛṣṇa. He said that. It reminds me of when Hari Das Hatha would sit in the prison. He got everyone that can Hari. And were in great anxiety while they were having the kids out of their Binyamin. The first time Prasad he could inside. Then the jailer who was taking his cut and then they would take extra Prasad and give out to all the prisoners. And this way they became of course, very popular. In fact, even there were some complete fanatics, violent, what they called immaculate. They believed that you can only do it by the peril of the gun.

There was a fanatic mallet that even Taima had given up. Now the dead killed. A few of those people were dead and still there today. And they are. They are considered so dangerous that they’re shackled up by the hand and by the legs. And they’re just shackled like that. And they’re never let out of their. Because they’re just considered to be complete, you know. So they would always be dancing with slogans. La salam ed salute. Ed salute. Whenever they speak Vishnu pad was bhai. Instead of saying red salute. They’d say even their hearts were so the whole town, the whole Navarro, the whole Māyāpur. They became very indignant that the devotees being treated like that. They began to realize that actually this is our own temple. The other Hindus they began to consider that we would do to our negligence and protection that we.

And normally we don’t have any bad dealings with the Muhammadans. It was all just because of the political leader educated them and told them that you will get so much if you do it and we will back to you. So then in the meantime also the American Consulate, French Consulate, British Consulate, Canadian. So many different nationals were there. They were all pounding on a tune papers all over the world. And the prime minister took the investigation of the case out of the state government and put it into the hand of the central government, the FBI of India. That way there would be a fair investigation. And so that changed everything. This had to parent that’s the were attacked. They made a case against us that we came out of the temple. They said that their case is.

They said this in our temple and there were innocent villages walking by. And he said and then they were his time just as they’re walking by, you know, of course we had photographs of inside the temple. They had broken the temple bell, they had fighted the whole lawn. They had broken the outer door to the temple. They had, you know, we didn’t do that. How many did it? So the police, when they came, it was so obvious that there was a huge war inside the temple ground that they nearly gave their report to the judge that. But then the communists again at that time they had said well it’s not safe for them to be. They should be kept in jail for their own safety. So then it was July and 29th coming up. So we organized a little procession.

All the local villages, the Isla de la and 20 sites people came. And then we had a permit for a little parade for 1200 25,000. The police said don’t put one 1200 because we don’t have that many police to cover it. If we put more, we will have to put too many. So then we marched up to the 10,000 commodities, you can imagine why and marched through the villages. And then we had the biggest, the police also hunting with us. But when the anti parties saw that we had so much popular support, then all of a sudden things started to change. And after that were able to get out of that. And then once the case got to court, then it went in our favor. And finally the government after they kept Stalling it. But everything was in our favor.

Finally the communist chief minister himself discussed that just for the sake of communal peace. That allowed me to withdraw the cases after two years. We can see that of course, how the Viknychad remains and this extreme difficult situation. How he discontinually said the United States emotion quality, which of course moved everyone. And after that even the communist leader who had done all these things came over and personally apologized. He had threatened at the height of it that we’re going to turn the long building into animal hospital. He went in the village, we’re going to turn it into animal hospital. And then Homin. The Guru school is very nice. Someone needs. We did a complete turnaround. So of course to the Prophet he said that they really wanted to get me, but Kṛṣṇa was trying to save me. And he was tired when he was thinking how doing all those big diet. Sometimes a devotee goes through different trials, goes through different difficulties. But by the mercy of Lord Kṛṣṇa, by the mercy of the previous desires, mercy of the right knowledge. One crosses over all the obstacles. Nothing can stop the movement of really explain to us that this international society is a different consciousness, is a grant. And there will always be different types of opposition to try to stop or try to har the project that even Tamil Habin has his opposition and he would do his sanctuary. And once they’re attached to Kṛṣṇa, once they have accepted Kṛṣṇa, then you tell them all. Then you get them to do all the rules and all the regulations and all these things. And if you just immediately tell everyone, all right, before you contend like Kṛṣṇa, I have to tell you that this means, you know, no meat, fish or eggs, no, you know, gambling, no more. Gradually the whole audience will gradually cry out of the room. So you don’t tell them all the rules, all the, you know, subtle philosophical things. Immediately you may say we follow Vishnu. But everyone can see the point is, first of all you get them to accept Kṛṣṇa. Once they accept the Kṛṣṇa, once they have understood that I am Kṛṣṇa and serving, then automatically you can introduce now how to purify yourself. So that’s how to get them to first accept Kṛṣṇa.

That there may be some slight variation according to time, place and circumstance. And because you’re getting them to accept Kṛṣṇa by a certain event, the common supra, all the kids in the west used to do it by culture, by cultural approach. Then now we do it by showing them maybe films or giving them drama, or by giving them history, lights and dark truth. Here you may do it by giving them nairob covers for others. But the ultimate thing, when they accept Kṛṣṇa, then you can. Then you have to also get them to follow the words and regulation. But first let them accept Kṛṣṇa. It’s just the same if you don’t tell someone the glories of the Holy Name if they don’t have faith. Because there is no doubt if you start telling people just to go up and until, you should know that.

Because the point is that depending on the person we can tell maybe as a very devout Catholic or Latin, you know something about him or rough comus, they will accept it. But maybe some of these modern, sophisticated Americans, you have to be a little more scientific about your approach. So the act of teaching, you don’t compromise. But like a doctor, the spiritual master has to the pride of medicine. Effectively the patient can practice it. But if one tries to unnecessarily change or the ultimate practice for the people who do Accept Kṛṣṇa and change that then of course that’s not. That’s only when you try to bring the new people, the innocent people who are not devoted. If you haven’t really accepted truthfulness, they don’t know who is Kṛṣṇa, who isn’t Kṛṣṇa. I mean, they’re just in ignorance.

For those people, we bring them in a different way. But then once they accept Kṛṣṇa, then we have to tell them accordingly. We don’t change our principles. And that way and these things have already. Basically we don’t have to invent anything new. The church has already given us so many ideas that it will be a little time before we even reach the temple. He’s already told us to do festive programs. He told us to do faith program. He told us to do. To do banasham programs. He predicted that there would be big congregations around all the temples. We have Namhatra group Mandir centers and mandir two different levels. And now between all the three we had when I left, we had about 500 Navhat groups just in Bengal, another about 80 in Arista that just started recently. And they’re doing the same thing in South India.

In South India the people are a little more. I just speaking in east and South India. I encourage them to do the same in Gujarat and in Maharashtra. When they told me they’re going to do it, I gave them all the papers, but I don’t know what the project. So in South India we have very good response. Even Mohammedans are coming up and agreeing with Camp Hare Kṛṣṇa every day. And several Christian boys. Christians in Kerala. St Thomas landed in Kerala just after Jesus. One of the St. Thomas Pasha, he landed there 1900 years ago. 1800 years ago. And somehow it converted a few Christians. So some of those descendants of the original Christians from the didn’t get any further than Perela, but then it was just there. And some of them had accepted initiation also.

And I remember that one of the boys, the mother said, why do you want to become a Hindu? Not Hindu. And he said, no, it should have followed. But it’s different. Just like when first when Jesus Christ came and all the. All the Jewish priests, they were all saying that the one should follow Jesus. But eventually, of course, he followed Jesus in the same way. Non religion is polluted through the Prophet. It’s come so many people may not accept that we have to follow the truth. So they have offered us some. The Ramanuja Sampradāya and the Madhura Sampradayan tells me they become very appreciative of our movement. I know that the Ramanuj is going to lay off with requested me to come and address the assembly of Brahmanas and a big public assembly.

When they came to the second biggest Vishnu temple in South India, they gave a full Kunda. We said the big silver pot with coconut on it processing into the town. And then at the gateway of the temple. The temple Ellison. They created big shoelace and with gold and other tapestry go. He gave mahaprashad garland. He bowed down and gave a mahaprashad garland over my neck and over India. And then there was another Ramanuja. This is a place where Mahimi Morsi gave out the nexus of the demigod. That the nectar is still available there for the mercy of what you can’t. And we can still get to next at certain times of the year. It’s just abundant. Even so, all the town people, the whole family, little village of Brahmanas, they’re all very much in favor of the kind of petition that they wanted. And there’s a very big lotus lake there. It’s all with beautiful steps around it. And the walls. This temple, the actual structure for built and rebuilt over. And the peasant structure is there for thousands and thousands of years.

The walls are 30ft high each. So it has just a wall sitting outside of it. That’s just a big compound wall around it. 300 acres of Pensacola. And it has two sub temples with it. One is a Nishinga temple where you have to go into a cave. And it’s in the center of a mountain under the cave of an elephant. And the mountain is exactly according to history. That was more recent. Just a few thousand years ago, the James, they had some big elephants. They made a big elephant, which was just huge. Now that it’s about 500ft high by practically a mile long, saying I mean the mountain. I am just saying the mountain is at least a thousand feet high by a mile long.
