The following is a lecture given by His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami Mahārāja on April 27, 1982 – in Śrī Māyāpur, India. The lecture begins with a reading from Bhagavad-gītā 4.30.
Translation by his Divine grace, all these performers who know the meaning of sacrifice become cleansed of sinful reaction. And having tasted the nectar of the remnants of such sacrifice, they go to the supreme eternal atmosphere. All these performers all these performers who know the meaning of sacrifice become cleansed of all sinful reactions. Of all sinful reactions. And having tasted the nectar and having tasted the nectar of the remnants of such sacrifice of such sacrifice, they go to the supreme eternal atmosphere. They go to the supreme eternal atmosphere. Purport from the foregoing explanation of different types of sacrifice, namely sacrifice of one’s possessions, study of the Vedas or philosophical doctrines and performance of the yoga system. It is found that the common aim of all is to control the senses. Sense gratification is the root cause of material existence.
Therefore, unless and until one is situated on a platform apart from sense gratification, there is no chance of being elevated to the eternal platform of full knowledge, full bliss and full light. This full platform is in the eternal atmosphere or Brahman atmosphere. All the above mentioned sacrifices help one to become cleansed of the sinful reactions of material existence. By this advancement in life, one not only becomes happy and opulent in this life, but also at the end he enters into the eternal kingdom of God, either merging into the impersonal Brahman or associating with the supreme personality of Godhead. Kṛṣṇa Nayam Lokos Jaya Gyathya Kuto nya Kurusattama O best of the Kuru dynasty. Without sacrifice one can never live happily on this planet or in this life. What then of the next? Here sacrifice is mentioned.
There’s the sacrifice of sacrificing material possessions and severe austerities. Take strict vows, practice Eightfold Yoga, study the Vedas, do the breathing exercises fast giving up the hearing process and the fire of sacrifice. Many different kinds of sacrifice. Kṛṣṇa mentions that of all sacrifices, Yajnaam, Japa, Yagyasmi, chanting the holy names is the topmost. Human life is meant for performing sacrifice. Rupin Sanātana were two great prime ministers. Aldi King Hussein Shah, one Prime Minister and one Finance minister I believe. And they lived in Ramakele. Ram Kheli is about a six or five hour train ride from Navadip station to the north in the district of Malda. At that time that was the capital of Bengal. It was known as God Lo Chaitanya is known as Godeshwar and it’s called God Abhimi Gora Mandalabhumi. So God Capital.
Over a thousand years Ago used to be in Navadweep but sometimes it was also in Malda. So Ram Kheli is about 2km from God and that was where the residence of Rupin Sanatmore you can say in the suburbs of the capital of the empire of the Maharaj Bhad Chop or Staying Chat and Rom Kelly was made into a beautiful replica of Vrindavan by Rupin Sanatan. They dug about. Well now there’s nine, but I understand there was 10. Or possibly there were 10. But Pukhors, that means man made ponds, lakes, Kundas, the two largest are called Rādhā Kunda and Shamakunda right next to each other and then around them there are the eight Kundas for the other eight principal Sakhis, seven principle seven or eight there Alita Kunda, Induleka Kunda, Shyamala Kunda, like that, all the different Kopis.
So and they are worshiping there their Rādhā Madanamohana deity. The three brothers Roop, Sanatan and Anupam. Anupam’s son was Jīva. I believe that Jīva Goswami had the fortune of having a darshan of Lord Chaitanya when he was just a child. Childs, when Lord Caitanya took his Sankirtan party there then Roop and Sanātana were very eager to see Lord Caitanya. So when they approached Lord Caitanya they put a straw of grass in their teeth. And in this way they went forward. And from a great distance they offered their obeisances. From a great distance they offered their obeisance. And Lord Caitanya was saying Come on. And they were ready humbly coming. And Lord Caitanya said, you, humility is breaking my heart. They say we are worldly people, we have already fallen. But Lord Caitanya, he was. You are our great Vaishnavas. Actually the father of.
But you know that Ramad Chaitani embraced them and gave them so many instructions. Ultimately they left and joined Lord Chaitan Vrindava, the father of Śrīnivas Acharya, one of the great Acharyas in our line. He’s different from Śrīvas Thakur, the Panchatatva. This is third generation. He comes. His father was Chaitam Yabbas and his mother was also named, I believe was named Lakshmi Priya. If I am not wrong, their home was not very far from Katwa which is where Lord Chaitanya took Sannyas. It’s about 1/3 of the way between Navadvip and Ram Kheli. So Chaitanya Das, when he was younger, he went up with his guru, who was going up to Ram Kheli, and he saw that there was literally a stream of Brahmanas going from Navadvi to Ramakili and playing with his guru. And he went into the private court of Rūpa Sanātana.
And there he saw that they were surrounded by Brahmanas and they were reading the Brahmanas were reading the Bhāgavatam for Rupin Sanatan and they were discussing scripture. And then Rupin Sanātana, after that Bhāgavatam pad or class was over, they were giving out profuse charity and hearing everyone what they were saying, what they needed for. And then accordingly, they were giving some charity. And this way all the Brahmanas are going back to Nabladev with their Bhuti or with their charity. And Chaitanya Dask understand that the whole Navadvik. How could in the middle of the Mohammedan kingdom, how is it possible that you had the biggest Hindu center of culture, biggest Vedic center of culture, all the pandits, all the. Because Brahmanas, they don’t make any money so much. They live. They’re mostly into scholastic, into spiritual matters. How are they getting.
Where are they getting the, you know, so to speak, the pick from where were they getting their donations from, where were they getting their backing? It was all from Rūpa and Sanātana, basically, principally, they were at least funding a large part of it. So of course, essay when they were coming, and very humbly lo Chaitanya knew that they were actually great devotees, how long they were practicing. Even though they were in one way they were in a Mohammedan situation, but somehow another, they were still maintaining their support for the Vedic culture in many ways and for Vaishnavism. So there’s also one form of sacrifice. But then Lord Caitanya, he wanted more sacrifice. Of course they wanted to join him, and he wanted that they should also join. So this is, of course, that people may be sacrificing in one level.
Just like people say, well, I am giving to my church, I am doing this, I am doing that. But if the Lord actually calls, then that’s something which is much more important. Lord Caitanya is actually calling the living entities to come forward and take up the practice of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, to take up the preaching to distribute the mercy of the Holy Name from house to house. This is more important than any other sacrifice that one could perform, is to take up the personal call of Caitani Mahatma either receive personally from him as Rupra Sanātana or as recipe through the disciplic succession. Guru Paramparā the principle of sacrifice for pleasing the supreme is the basic ingredient of all different kinds of sacrifice.
But of all those, this most sublime sacrifice of giving out the mercy of the Lord in the form of his holy name, preaching the glories of the Holy Name, that is something incomparable. We should be very careful. This is the Hare Kṛṣṇa movement that we chant Hare Kṛṣṇa regularly and carefully. Sometimes we say we’re too busy to chant Hare Kṛṣṇa but Śrīla Prabhupāda instructed us that just like somehow or another we’re not too busy to eat. We don’t forget to eat, you see, rarely. So similarly we shouldn’t forget to chant. This is food for the soul. If we are a little bit careless in chanting and associating with devotees, then gradually we start to get covered again by dust of material energy and we start to lose our taste. Actually whatever one does in devotional service, one doesn’t lose that.
But if one stops practicing devotional service, then of course one gets stuck up. So to get out of that stuck up position and one has to very carefully again cleanse away the dust and to get into gradual progress of sacrificing for the sake of Caitanya Mahāprabhu. There’s a big difference we can see between Rūpa and Sanātana and ordinary people. They’re actually all along were great devotees. It’s a wonderful place. And Ram Kheli every year in the month of May, Jasta Sankrandi sometimes early in June, it’s the second month of the Bengali year. It’s already usually it rains. About 30 to 40,000 people gather there. And it used to be just a straight Vaishnav mela. But now in the recent about 20 years, the bowels, those are the people that play the one stringed look like bongo drums with a little bamboo coming out, Akitar.
And they come and they sing their songs. Claim to be Loki. So the Vaishnav kind of pushed them out of the actual Ramkili temple. So they built up another camp down the street. But they come there every year, both them. And then the regular devotees come and it’s quite a nice little festival. One year I gave a lecture. 20,000 people were there. And the man before me, he gave a Bhāgavatam lecture for three hours in a row. He had about a whole jar full of ginger with salt on it. Keep going. When they told him that his time was up. He said, I was just getting warmed up. I was just getting warmed up. His other people were there. Pretty patient, though, I have to admit. A few more people came when we came on. They were actually listening.
I mean, at least 5,000 were listening to him three hours straight. And then the crowd swelled to about 20,000 after. He was quite determined to, you know, to lecture. He was. People were listening, must say they were interested in hearing the topics of the Bhāgavatam. They had the taste. And so we did a little kīrtana to get everybody warmed up. And then of course, we gave a lecture also. I kept it to about an hour, about 45 minutes to an hour. But he could hear a pin drop. Everyone was listening. And we got everyone to chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. And then we do our normal little drama. Sometimes we show cinema and on the side we have book tables of any books. So people, they like to hear about Lord Chaitanya, like to come to these holy places for grihastas.
They consider that to be their sacrifice. If they go a long distance and go to some holy place india that’s considered to be, of course, that’s criticized in the Vedas, that there’s some. Someone living by the side of the Ganges thinks that if he travels long distance and goes, you know, to hardwire, take it back into Ganges. But that’s not the actual real austerity. Of course, it may be an austerity to travel on those overcrowded buses, but of course it’s recommended that the greater austerity is giving your hearing and hearing from the devotees of the Lord about the glories of Kṛṣṇa. Sometimes you see huge crowds of people come to take the bath and go back and they never actually hear what’s the purpose of human life. They just know that, well, I have committed so many sins, I have to go wash them off.
So they think that only washing is you just take a bath and then that’s it. But then they don’t actually change the heart. So that. That kind of bathing bathe long time and they don’t actually change, although eventually will have its effect. But due to so many offenses, it’s considered like hatisnam, you know, Hati sna. Bathing of the elephant. Back to Dan. Back to Dan. He’s very interested in elephants. You know how they bathe them? Yeah, they use the dust, but then they go in the water, they wash.
Off the dust, they go back and take more dust.
They scrub each other very carefully with their nose. Sometimes they help each other get really clean and they go back out and pick up the dust. That’s right. First thing they do, they come right out and they start throwing dust on themselves. So these people, practically the first thing they do, they get out immediately, you know, light up their bees. So they know that it’s, you know, they have the understanding that this is a holy. But the problem is that a lot of these things are imported by the British. Like india, no one ever used to smoke bidis or take tea. This was all imported when the Second World War, Prabhupāda said when it was in effect, Britain couldn’t export the Indian tea. So, I mean, their tea gardens were going broke, so they had to make a domestic market.
Before then, they never really thought of selling any tea india. They were always exporting it overseas. And now the shipping lanes are closed because of the war. So Śrīla Prabhupāda said that actually in Calcutta in the Second World War, maybe it was the First World War, that they did that they were. They had booths in Calcutta and they were giving out three cups of tea to anyone would take it. Now the big science that it makes bald people grow their hair, it cures malaria. It’s like the panacea of all human frailties. You just take the tea and you become superman or something. And they’re begging people just to take it for free. They’re giving it out house to house. And people started to get hooked. They thought it was a matter of prestige to have your afternoon tea now, afternoon, morning, noon, night.
Now their biggest market is domestic. About 2/3 of the tea they consume and one third they export, I believe. But no one used to take tea for all these things. Where tobacco wasn’t also indigenous, as far as I understand, it wasn’t indigenous india. It wasn’t taken before, but now it’s become a habit and thanks to the marketing genius of our Western culture. So as a result, people just pick up these bad habits. It doesn’t mean the fight’s lost. These are not the end of it. Generally speaking, that’s about all they do. Even the armed robbers, before they go to bed, they usually have a cup of hot milk. I was pretty surprised in Calcutta in the peak of the. Of the communist riots, they were having about. On the headlines, seven people murdered, 14 people murdered, five people murdered.
But that was the total for the whole city. A city of, you know, 7 million. I think that there’s more than that. Just an ordinary city in the west, five a day is nothing I think New Yorkers, 150 a day getting murdered or something. And I saw the sign in Atlanta, underpaid policeman. It had the scorecard. Yeah, I am surprised. I mean, everybody should have bars on their windows. They do now, but I told these are all recent, you know. But Kali Yuga progresses real fast as a snowball effect. The Chaitanya Mahāprabhu’s movement also has its snowball effect. And the purifying effect of Lord Caitanya’s movement is more powerful than the contaminating effect of the Kali Yuga.
If the pure devotees sincerely practice and sincerely give that association, then no matter how contaminated one may be from the Kali Yuga, it’s possible that they can be purified if they just have a little desire. They have a little desire to get out of the influence of Kali Yuga. As we see here that by little sacrifice one becomes cleansed of all the sinful reactions. Having tasted nectar of the remnants of such sacrifice, they go to the supreme eternal atmosphere. So sometimes by association we get a little bit distracted. We have to be very careful to beware of that type of a situation and to go on tasting the nectar of the remnants of sacrifice. Actually, nothing should be accepted by human being except the remnants of sacrifice.
If we go on it with every action, every thought, every word offered in the sacrifice of devotional service, then we’re already considered liberated. So he’s already, Jīva Mukta, already liberated life because every activity is offered to Kṛṣṇa Rla Prabhupda. He made such a big sacrifice, bringing Kṛṣṇa Consciousness to the west, offering his every thought, word and deed for giving the fallen people of the world Kṛṣṇa Consciousness. In spite of not getting any support, it’s our solemn duty to try to carry on the legacy that he’s given us. Similarly, he sent different preachers in different parts of the world to take up that preaching. If it wasn’t for these preachers, of course. And how would Kṛṣṇa conscience have been spread? Just like Ryacharidev went to South America and opened up the whole continent.
And how so many different temple presidents, they went different places and opened up temples, different preachers. In this way, Rla Prabhupāda threw his different instruments, hands and legs, he was able to get the movement of Caitanya Mahabhu to reach even the farthest distant most places. Was this any particular thing anyone like to hear? Which one? Oh, the festival of Conan. You don’t tell that in a laughter. In the Bhagavad Gītā, it says at.
The Time of death, Whatever state one obtains, he’s in. How does one know what state he’s in?
You will know by your next birth. You should chant Hare Kṛṣṇa that you don’t have any doubt. You’re in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. That you can know from the spiritual master if you’re in Kṛṣṇa consciousness or not. That’s in the doubt. If you’re chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa and following the instructions of the spiritual master, then you’re in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. You ever heard the Bengali historical humor the Prabhupāda told about that king in his court jester, Gopal Bhar? About the ass? Yeah. Like they walk in and say that the king would say that you’re an assholpal. And they say, no, I am not an ass. No, you’re an ass. He said, no, there’s a difference between me and an ass. He said, well, Gopal, I think that you’re thoroughly an ass. He said, I beg your pardon, your majesty, that there’s a difference between me and an ass.
And the king said, what is that difference? And he walked up to the king and measured off the distance between him and the king and said, about 5ft. Baba said that the king would keep one person who was just. Just to give a little humor to the whole situation because the king is politics and judging people, maybe giving a death sentence. So many things that in the courtroom, kind of just like, you know, between preparations, sometimes it takes some, you know, you have to have a little something to cut just the heavy. Otherwise, just if you judge someone for a death sentence or something and the next guy comes in, it’s just like this other mood would kind of go over. So they have one person who’s like the comedian and he’s the only one that’s allowed to spoof on the king.
Prabhupāda actually told this in a sense that a lot of these things would show the Vedic culture that the relations you get just from the humor, you kind of get a different perspective on what this is about 250 years ago. A different perspective. One time, Gopal was. The king was going and driving on his horse and he saw a procession. He saw that there was a Brāhmaṇa with a shala gramshila around his neck and he was passing stool, answering nature call. And then the king was astonished at how Brāhmaṇa would be carrying a shaligam sheila and doing, you know, that kind of going to the bathroom and not remaining pure, you know. So when he got back to his courtroom, he called for that, you know, to find who that Brahmin was and bring him.
So they brought the Brahmin and he said that you were carrying a shalagam sheila. He said yes. I said that you were answering your nature call around this time. He said yes. And you were wearing the shalagam sheila around your neck. The Brahmin was shaking. He said yes. He said, you call yourself a Brahmin? Why didn’t you hang him? Hang the Shalagam shah on a tree and then after you finish and wash your hands then you pick it up. What kind of a Brahmin are you? You are a disgrace to my whole kingdom. And this way we are going to be guilty offenses to Narayan. The kingdom will be ruined. I sentence you at sundown to die, have your head chopped off. And they were ready to grab, taken away. And the Brāhmaṇa was completely shook.
Then Gopal, at this time he intervened and said but can king. He was just the carrier of the Shali Brahma, the king, you know, whenever Gopal gets his nose in the fence he knew that something’s up. But he was very angry because this Brahman had committed a great offense. He was very convinced that he committed a great offense. In this way if Brahmanas don’t show good example then definitely they can be punished by the king if they don’t show a good Kṛṣṇa conscious example. So but the king, he said what do you mean? He was the carrier. So what? He was carrying the. He was carrying the Shali gram and he was doing all this dirty business. Gopal said no, but he was simply the carrier. So then the king says well what do you mean?
And they said well your majesty, today when you’re riding your horse, did your horse evacuate? Of course, the horses always evacuate. Well, when it evacuated, did you immediately go and take a bath and purify yourself? Did you consider yourself contaminated? The king said go pal, release the Brahman this way. You know the little stories. But then one can kind of see how even in the more recent history, just before this or just before the British rule, how even in the Kali Yuga, how the remnants of the Vedic culture were there. It’s a shame that now all the kings are abolished. I feel that if the kings were there, we wouldn’t have a lot of scope for preaching. We wouldn’t have any problem for land and things like that. Of course with the kings maybe the CAS Brahmanas would have had more clout too.
In Rajasthan, aren’t there still. Well, the king is a name only. I mean they don’t have any more. The government took away all their power, took all their lands. Oh, yeah, everything. Everything but the crown jewels. And then they’re trying to find those too. They’re all buried somewhere. They hid them for the large part. There’s one king in South India who was the king of, I believe, Trabunkot or something like that. And there’s a big deity called Ra called Ki Swami Padmanabha Swami. And that deity apparently owns about half a billion dollars. And it’s all kept underneath the temple. And sometimes the whole state goes into a drought. And then the king is the only one that’s allowed to borrow from that. He goes to the deity and then he borrows.
He requests to borrow so much of the kiddy, and then he borrows it and lends it to the state. And the state, after they pull over the drought period, then they pay back the king and he pays back the deity. So before the wealth would be kept, a lot of wealth would be kept with the deity. Instead of putting the federal reserve in Fort Knox, they put it in the temples, and that would be the deity’s wealth. But then if they needed it, they could borrow it, but they had to pay it back that way. They always had a reserve this way. The relationship between the king and the people was very close with the deity. The people knew that if they misbehaved or something, there would be some difficulties. But then automatically they would go to the deity.
The king would take a loan, somehow cover it over, and the king would be very careful to return every last ounce of gold, not to be in debt to the deity. Questions?
You’re saying last night, but I think it was last night, but some temple and stuff. They knew they were gonna get Iskconghini Morty appeared. I was just wondering.
Or she gave the nectar out.
Oh. Or she gave the nectar out. So all Kṛṣṇa’s incarnations, they don’t appear necessarily on Earth planet, is that right?
Because, like, well, Bhavana, they didn’t appear on Earth planet.
Like Hiran Nikashipu in the btg, it had this. You know, you see this picture of this big. Supposed to be the pillar of the palace. Killed him by Lord.
When Braha was fighting with Hirvanyaksha, when he gave him the final blow, at that time, he put his foot on the earth one foot. And the place where he put his foot on the earth was Navadvita. And that’s why one of the islands in Navadip is called Kola. Dwee Cola is a name For Vara Cola. Cola. K H O L A I guess Coca Cola is a Namaba. That’s how they made it. Probably. So everyone’s changing. What for? All has a name? Yes. How about a Cola? Cola is the real thing now you can be more Kṛṣṇa conscious. A little bit better. A lot better. One of the devotees of Baraha was worshiping. A Navajo was very eager to see that form. And he worshiped for a long time. And then Baraha again appeared there in half. Seen it? Thankful.
When we take over these places, these tirtas, that if they are given to us, do we have to consider what offenses have been committed there before? Consider them mean? I mean that you may have to. Because of the offenses that were committed. You have to take on that responsibility for those offenses. I wouldn’t believe so. Why would one have to do that? I don’t know this one. Offenses are personal and ancient. If a person commits an offense, it’s not like in a holy Dham. People go there and leave. All their sinful reactions that can pile up like every time after the devotees leave. After all the people leave. I don’t change the devotees. It’s after they go pointing in my bag. All those Karmis. About 2 million Karmis. How many? 7 million pilgrims come there? 700,000. And last two days it’s packed up.
After everybody leaves, all the boys get sick. Then for two weeks I got dengue fever, all kinds of things, flus. But that’s sinful reactions. But offenses are a personal nature. The thing with that particular temple, we would have to keep some of the hereditary Brahmins. Their family’s been worshipping that deity for 500 years. The stipulation is they have to also have a right there to do worship. We can do some worship. He would be able to develop the whole place and manage it. But there would be a little bit of limitation in terms of, you know, you can still have a. Of course, in one sense. I mean, we’re not exactly experienced in worshiping Lord Narayan. But they seem quite cooperative. They use the Pancharatric system of Nārada Muni. We have one devotee, Gora Kesha, who’s been studying it for years.
He’s really into it. He was the one that did the fire sacrifices here at Guapo Nima. I was gonna be dumb. You missed out. They had the big fire sacrifice pit. That was a nine foot long Garuḍa eagle. It was, I think seven feet by. Maybe it was 11. Seven by 11 or huge things took up a lot of Students and then they did a boot suiting. But to give the faith in the local people when you do the various rituals, they gave some faith in that. Other questions? Yes.
I heard Rūpa Nuga say before that Lord Shaitani doesn’t appear every color Yoga.
No, he only comes after Kṛṣṇa comes.
He comes every Kaliyur and every once.
Every day of Brahma. He does after Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa doesn’t come every Kali Yuga. No, no, no.
Not Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa comes every dwarf of Yuga.
Kṛṣṇa doesn’t come every Dwarpa Yuga. There’s a thousand Mahā Yugas in one day of Brahman. And Kṛṣṇa comes once and a day of Brahman once in a thousand ages. So how is the after. After 1000 Dwarpa Yuga should be back again. There’s.
In every Yuga there’s a special type of Dharma, right?
Yes.
So how is Yuga? What is the Yuga Dharma now?
Then there will be a new Bhāgavatam. There will be a new Veda. That state wrote this Bhāgavatam for this Kala Yuga just at the end being a Dvarpa Yuga. So in these four Yugas, it was this way. Similarly, Kalki will come and establish Khaka Yuga, and then he will establish a new Yuga Dharma. You can’t say in the future what sacrifice would be for what Yoga Dharma. What sacrifice would be for what Yuga.
But is chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa. It’s always.
That was. Yeah. Ajamil wasn’t in the Kali Yuga. He chanted Narayan once and he was taken back to Godhead. Vlmki chanted Mara, mara, mara, kill, kill in Sanskrit. And then he was chanting the name Ram in the Tretā Yuga before Ram appeared and he became Valmiki. When he was a dacoite, he was a robber. Draupadi was chanting out on Kṛṣṇa’s name when she was being stripped. And by calling Kṛṣṇa’s name, she was saved from embarrassment. An attempt was being made to strip her, to embarrass her like that, insult her like that, disgrace her. So the Holy Name always has power. The thing is that chanting the Holy Name itself, sometimes people can chant the Holy Name for thousands and thousands of births and still not achieve perfection. If the person is offensive.
If you chant and commit offense at the same time, that’s the special mercy of Lord Caitanya, is that he forgives us from offenses. That’s why in the Kali Yuga, the Dharma of Navadip goes on increasing Māyāpur Dham increases. All the other holy Dhams gradually decrease. Even in Vrindavan, the desert is moving in from the Rajasthan desert. No one can effectively worship Vrindaban unless they’re free from offenses. When the demons went to kill Kṛṣṇa, they were offensive, so Kṛṣṇa killed them.
(Side B of the Cassette)
The demons, when they went to try to hurt Lord Caitanya’s movement, like the Chantazi other, Lord Caitanya made them into pure devotees. This is the glory of Navad Ve done. When Lord Caitanya was in South India and those Buddhists attacked him with the plates and everything. Then Lord Chaitanya practically chopped the heads off at this place. But in Navadvp he delivered the Chankazi Jaggai Maday Devananda Pandits. How many offenders? Chapula Gopal. This is a special power of Navadvik Dham and especially the host of the mercy of Lord Caitanya. Of course, even Lord Caitanya delivered that Buddhist because he told all the followers chant Hare Kṛṣṇa this year. Thus his disciples became the guru because they gave him initiation. Hare Kṛṣṇa chanting so the chanting is in every age. But if one chants offenselessly.
But in this Kali Yuga, if one chance to take shelter of Lord Caitanya, then by his mercy, then one is forgiven offenses. So therefore one can chant effectively. That’s why it’s a special mercy that in this Kali Yuga one can chant the Holy Name without offense easily. May the mercy of Lord Chaitanya. Especially when one chants Lord Chaitanya’s name, there’s no offense. So even the Sahajyas, they chant Nittaigora Radisham. They feel existence that’s not considered to be very favorable because they’re not following the principles. Although they feel their hearts still stay hard because at the same time they’re disobeying Lord Chaitanya. But eventually they will be brought somehow another. If we stick to chanting, following the instructions of Lord Caitanya as they have come through the discipline of succession, then we achieve all success when we taste the nectar, go back to the supreme spiritual atmosphere.
Have any questions? Gayatri Back to rich.
About the Gayatri. Can anyone chant the Gayathri? You know, anyone that’s eligible? You have to be initiated to be eligible.
Yeah. If you don’t receive the Gayatri through the spiritual master, it doesn’t have any effect. I met people who read the Gayatri in a book and they have been chanting it for years. But they admit that, you know, does not having any, you know, doesn’t have any effect.
Used to protect people from material entanglement.
It’s not different from Kṛṣṇa. It’s not different from Kṛṣṇa. And by meditating on the Gayatri, then one can stop the mind from mental speculation. But it’s actually form of association with Kṛṣṇa by sharing the Gayatri. Then one’s body is considered to become qualitatively one with Kṛṣṇa. As long as one follows regular principles and ones can make himself qualified to realize his qualitative oneness with Kṛṣṇa. One can’t chant Gayatri without being a little purified already one gets initially purified by chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa. Hare Kṛṣṇa goes on all the way through.
It’s the only mantra in its age that ever work. Right. The work for humanity. You know, people would learn it’s only mantra designed for this age though genuinely words.
Lord Shaitanya said there are unlimited names of Kṛṣṇa and all of them have all of Kṛṣṇa’s potency. But he especially recommended we should chant this Mahā mantra as being the most effective. But any name of Kṛṣṇa chanted in devotion would have some effect.
That’s all. We went back to the spiritual world.
Yeah, it’s the most effective way. It’s the guaranteed way.
It’s done correctly. Well, you know, most people know like dreaming. You know, demons, dreamers, they dream more or less nature that doesn’t very little. But the sound vibration itself. And a lot of people, yes, just to sound. But I am just saying it does certain. Like when I was first taught, I was taught to just chant. And then later on the Achitattva mantra. I was taught that much later. About two or three weeks after I got up to eight or nine rounds day.
How long have you been chanting now?
Two years.
Two years?
Yeah. Sixteen rounds a day. I imagine it’s been about two years.
You been here for two years?
No, I have been around the country. Well, mostly around the eastern part. I was always in six months been.
In San Diego temple or just outside. Did you see anyone that went to San Diego?
Yeah, my name I. That was two years ago around July. June and July.
How long you been here now?
I have been here for oh, about a week.
One week?
Yeah, A week. But I was here before about two months. Two months, Maybe a month. I don’t know.
So now you’re going to be staying here?
I am more. I know a little bit more now. I got most of my going. Most of my advancement about two or three days or two. Two or three weeks down in Gainesville. It’s a little advanced, you know, I got some advancement there that I didn’t expect. I have been trying quite a while and stuff like that. Does that sound. Well, that’s the only way I got any kind of realization now.
I think you’re gonna be Staying here strictly. So you’re gonna be staying here in the Mariah Seymour.
I am gonna make the go. I mean, you know, do the best I can. I didn’t do very good.
You like doing farm work?
Yes, I think so.
About two days.
Working with the cows, Working with the cops, chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa. Yes.
You’re thinking about Kṛṣṇa or you know.
Talking about Kṛṣṇa.
Yeah. Don’t talk too much nonsense. Try not to.
So why not? Why not? Prophet said that at Māyāpur we should make a program to the leaders. He used to tell us, you make a program for one year and you stick to it then that way. Otherwise, you know your mind every, you know, few days can think of how to change this and that. This, you know, the grass always looks greener on the other side of the fence. So recommended you make a program for one year. He told the sannyāsa that you stick to it. Then at the end of the year then you can evaluate. Well, should I do the same thing the next year? Should I do something different? Otherwise if you just change whenever that idea comes, then it’s hard to really get your teeth into things.
Yeah, you make more advance, but you come up with better ideas.
Right. So.
You really get into things like a water program as far as self sufficiency goes. Come up with a lot of ideas, but there’s always other ideas. You know, there’s plenty of ideas, but there’s somebody already got a better idea.
What do you think of the idea of making a plan of staying in one place or one service for like a year or so and then at the end of that period then changing, putting like a fixed time? Well, I am going to stick to it so long as far as possible. And then as a way of training the mind. Yes.
I don’t see no other way possible as far as anything worthwhile. This is the end of road. It’s worth more than anything I have ever done. As far as man. The world system is the only way.
To.
You originally from where I was.
Well, I was raised up from 1 to. Well, 2 to 6, 2 to 8 or 7. Seven when I was middling. Kentucky. Rest of the time I was Indian. Ohio.
Do you have any other questions? So you think you’re gonna stay up until next score poor Nemo, then re evaluate your program?
I don’t know. I get stuck in one spot program. I like it too much, you know, it doesn’t bother me, you know.
After a while.
No, I mean in a year there are going to be times when you’re going to really like it. And there are going to be times maybe when you don’t. When, you know, the point is that if you put the time, you know, six months, a year, then that way, you know, maybe three days, it’s bad. You don’t think, well, it’s a little bit rough. Let’s go somewhere. You know, that way you may find out that every other place you got three days bad too. So it’s better to say, well, I am going to stick it out for six months or for a year. And then at the end of that, I will evaluate what was the average.
I just hear about anything that happened as far as usually had happened because it happened.
I only mention it because you see, you know, moving around a lot. Prabhupāda advises for the devotees like sannyasis and other senior devotees that they should fix up a program and stick to it for a period of time. And then he said, once a year for them, once a year, re evaluate, and then if necessary, change otherwise like that. So just as not to in the middle of the year, change like that, because that way nothing gets done. So I thought that. Well, since he advised that for senior devotees who maybe more often get their service changed, or to speak of someone who’s just coming up, seems like a good program to stay one place for a little time and then get into service and then before just changing for another place.
I don’t like traveling that much. Much. I never did myself, you know, as part of that. I never did like traveling. I did part of it.
So maybe I will see you here when I come back in September.
All right.
Yes.
You know, I am pretty sure, you know, I know. What’s some healthier mentality? Just too much, you know, what’s your limit together, huh?
What’s the longest you ever stayed in one spot? It’s not too bad.
Good.
Not too bad. That’d be good. Long enough to win your ticket to Indian bank. Any questions? Back to Dan?
Yes, to a tape.
And it was Śrīla.
Gurupda was reading out a book by Bhaktived Viod. And it seemed like it was a discussion between some disciples and the guru. And they were discussing the 10 offenses.
And then.
They kept asking questions back and forth. And it came to, well, what’s.
Nothing.
Seems to be absolute. Not even the benefit you get from chanting, because you can chant sometimes in an offensive state of mind and making offenses, and then it can go on for lifetimes. And then the answer was, well, the.
Most.
Absolute thing is association with anything like this. And then that came to the conclusion that the it’s the association of devotees that’s eternally beneficial.
What’s the question?
Can you comment on the eternal benefit of association?
This is supposed to be a direct.
Quote from this was a book he Gurupod. It seemed like it was. He’s writing a book about Japa reform, I think it’s called. And then he was reading the 10 offenses, how Bhakti Vinodakua had written. And he was commenting personally on how it was worded a little different and the same meaning with different words. And then it was a discussion with a guru. Plus many disciples were speaking in this book and Gurupada was reading out of it. And then the discussion between the guru and disciples came up and they were saying, well, then you can commit offenses, and then you can chant for lifetimes and not get the love of Godhead. And then they want to know, well, what is the death benefit? And the answer was association with devotees.
Just like Lord Caitanya forgives one from offenses, so also do the devotees. That’s why one has to take shelter of a devotee if he wants to advance Rla Prabhupāda said very emphatically Māyāpur. He one day was telling us that I am not depending on my devotional service, my chanting of Hare Kṛṣṇa anything, I am simply depending. I am only doing these things because it’s the order of my spiritual master to please him. And I am depending upon the mercy of my spiritual master to make any advancement the actual why we chant. We chant because our spiritual master said we should chant. We don’t think that my chanting is pure chanting or offenseless chanting. How can I chant purely or offenselessly? But he’s asked me to chant. If I chant to please him, if he’s pleased, then I will be perfected.
Because by the mercy of devotee, then one gets the mercy of Kṛṣṇa. So that’s sure. My chanting may or may not be perfect. I may be attentive, I may be inattentive. But anyway, if I do it to please my spiritual master who is a pure devotee of Kṛṣṇa, spiritual master must be a pure devotee has to be a devotee of Kṛṣṇa, otherwise he can’t be a spiritual master, bona fide one. The devotee of Kṛṣṇa is empowered to bring people back to Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa to forgive people for offenses. Look at the Māyā demon was being chased by Sudarshan Chakra surrendered to Arjuna immediately. Kṛṣṇa forgave him. He told The Sudarshana stop because the demon surrendered to his devotee for Kṛṣṇa. Even though he was offensive, very offensive, he should have been killed. Kṛṣṇa stopped the Sudarshan Jaggamandai because Lord Chaitanyanda would have annihilated them.
But because Nityānanda accepted their surrender. Therefore Lord Chaitanya accepted. So we put more faith in our in the mercy of the spiritual master than our ability to chant Hare Kṛṣṇa or practice Kṛṣṇa consciousness. We do because we know it’s pleasing to the spiritual man. This is a higher understanding. This is actually the principle of raga. Bhakti is when one has that type of absolute. In the initial stage, one is doing vidhis, doing the rules and regulations and thinking that by my practicing I am advancing higher standards. I actually understand that it’s happening. By the mercy of my spiritual master, I am practicing. But the practicing is ultimately pleasing to Kṛṣṇa. Because it’s pleasing to my spiritual master. I may make some defect. So many defects may be there. That is actual humility. Then one doesn’t also get puffed up.
He’s able to give a good class or chant Hare Kṛṣṇa nicely or preach nicely or do any kind of service nicely. He sees that this was by the mercy of Because I am trying to please my spiritual master. So Kṛṣṇa is opening to do so. How does one come to the stage.
Of understanding that relationship with spiritual master is the only eternal or real relationship? And therefore how can you get that realization to give up?
By acting and the acting and that relationship following the instructions and by the.
Mercy of the spiritual master. That relationship is revealed to the Son.
Yes, why not? And the mercy of the spiritual master. Everything is spiritual Master says to chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. So we chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. He gives us so many reasons why he’s telling us to chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. It’s not based upon his own whimsical idea. It’s authorized by Kṛṣṇa. It’s desired by Kṛṣṇa. Once we understand that spiritual man is representing Kṛṣṇa, then we focus at he’s asking us to chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. Therefore we chant.
Mantras and brothers and devotees. In this age it’s impossible to be a Brahman. Like all mantras. There are no perfect mantra in this language.
Hi Kṛṣṇa. Purpose. The Brahmanas cannot pronounce the Vedic mantras properly in the Color Yoga. Therefore the Vedic original Vedic mantras are hymns. The Vedic hymns have to be not only like Hare Kṛṣṇa can be chanted without exactly having. It’s not like that. Every tone and everything has to be in some specific order. But these Vedic Mantras. There’s a whole way that it has to be chanted with the intonation and a proper up and down and the proper tune. And it’s the whole thing. If you don’t do it properly, then the mantra has some totally opposite effect. They’re actually material sound vibrations, these Vedic hymns in the Karma and they can produce atomic weapons. They can do all kind of things if you know how to pronounce them properly. They can bring back a dead body to life if you say it the wrong way.
Until they different effect or no effect.
But you don’t know if it won’t have just no effect or if it will have a bad effect or something if you don’t chant it so often. It’s just. I mean, is there specific instructions given on how should be chanted and what will happen?
That’s a whole separate paramparā. And those type of masters are not available. Those type of qualified Brahmanas to chant those mantras are not available. When I close that back door, I think it’s letting these flies in.
There is this myth that nobody has a perfect character, nobody has a perfect intelligence in the sake too much admire most of the time. Other ages are.
But people were to chant these particular type of mantras. One has to have complete control of the mind. So that’s very difficult to achieve.
It says that, you know, Prabhupāda said that if the disciple falls down, the.
Guru will come back.
For the disciple, does he come back to be understood that he actually directly comes back to reclaim the fallen disciple? Or does he come back because the guru was one? Does he come back? In a sense, he gets the opportunity by associating with the Bonaparte guru again, a disciple of his guru.
In another lifetime, there may be some other alternative, but definitely that in some circumstances the guru, the same guru himself comes back.
I. I had also heard one time from Śrīla Ramasora that they had asked the same question, Prabhupāda, I think back in 74, 73, and he had said, yes, you know, the guru will come back for the disciple, that particular guru. But then you shouldn’t think that the disciples shouldn’t think that he will come back every time. It’s like you just.
If he repeatedly. Yeah, repeatedly neglect to follow the guru, then they can’t think he’s going to come every time. One has to try. If you don’t try. If a person sincerely tries and he just can’t make it, then spiritual man is to come and help him again.
Like Prabhupāda used to say that, you know, I read one that he said, I have to say, see that. I see that my spiritual master has sent you all to me. And so I was just speculating is that, you know, that some, you know, it’s possible that just that some situations that some of Prabhupāda’s disciples could have been fallen disciples of Bhakti Siddhānta like that. In that way they’re being revived. Their guru, they’re being. The guru is coming to save them through this disciple.
When he says that my spiritual master sent me, what he’s meaning is that I am supposed to. As a disciple, we’re supposed to carry out the order of our spiritual master in toto. But it’s not physically possible for some of us. For some it might be. But I mean, at least for myself, it’s not possible. So then a prophet told me to. One of the orders to me is to expand the propaganda unlimitedly. I have not been able to fulfill that order. That’s the exact order. So then you’d say that, well, he’s sending disciples to help me carry the order that I can’t do.
Do it.
Like Bhakti Siddhānta said, told them there’s speech in their western countries. But then he sent devotees. He said, I alone, I can’t do it. I want to establish that I can’t single handedly do it. So this might. I should be able to do it. It’s my duty as a disciple to do it alone. Why should I? But I am not able to. So he sent me help. And that’s my. As far as whether Bhakti Siddhānta sent any of his fallen disciples or not, that’s something beyond me. When the scripture says that the spiritual master has to come back, I can understand that.
But.
Even if there may be some other alternative sometimes. But in any case, the general rule is he has to come back. As far as speculating whether any. I don’t understand the utility of if there’s any other alternative. I mean the basic fact he’s responsible to come back. He can work something out. That’s another thing. We don’t know about that. So the point is that he’s responsible. If necessary, he has to come back. You can’t bank on it that there’s any other alternative. If there is another and he uses it, that’s another thing. That’s another contingency that may or may not exist. That’s our first center called. The point is that the disciples should feel that the spiritual master is obligated to come back. And the spiritual master should feel that he’s obligated if a sincere disciple is there.
And then in between that if there’s any other alternative that comes up at that time or that place, it’s a personal movement. That’s another thing. And we’re at that particular place in existence and we will know whether such alternatives exist or not. Yes.
Well, if the disciple doesn’t keep up.
His end of the bargain.
He can sever the relationship. Prabhupāda said, don’t expect that he will come back every time.
Because then you could just use the spiritual master in that way.
Right? You can’t take the spiritual master for granted. Don’t take advantage, Robinson. Please don’t make me come back. I will make the spiritual master come back like Tintamini to become a prostitute. That was my point.
That’s what I was questioning.
The Prabhupāda said that the spiritual master came back as Chintamini.
What I want to know is that she spoke through.
Prabhupāda said that the spiritual master took birth as the prostitute in the form of a woman to get that disciple.
That’s what I. I have always wondered about whether he was speaking through her.
Prabhupāda said that he took birth, took that particular form because that was the form that he could reach his disciples through. And he said, don’t make your spiritual master come as a prostitute. I think it’s the late 10 o’.
Clock.
I got a pack too for. Is it cookies tonight? Cookies?
It.
