The following is a lecture given by His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami Mahārāja on April 30, 1982 – in Denver, USA. The lecture begins with a reading from Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 4.30.17.
Text 17 chapter 30 castle four them the activities of the translation by divine grace to the ac five the Lord then bless all these by my mercy, you can enjoy all the facilities of this world as well as the heavenly world. Indeed, you can enjoy all of them without hunger and with full strength for one of those celestial leaders. The forehead racial pad the duration of life described for the by the supreme personality of God who is calculated by the time and measurements of higher planetary systems. Our six Earth months are said to equal 12 hours. In the higher planetary system, 30 days equal one month and twelve months equal one year and this way for 1 million years. According to the calculation of the higher planetary system, the potatoes were allowed to enjoy all kinds of material facilities.
Although this lifespan was so long, the potatoes again given full bodily strength by the grace of the Lord. In the material world, if one wants to live for many years, he must endure the difficulties of old age in validity and many other miserable conditions. The phetas, however, were given full bodily strength to enjoy material facilities. This special facility was given to the phetas so that they could continue rendering full devotional service. This will be explained in the following verse translation. Thereafter you will develop unadulterated devotional service unto me and degrees of all material contamination. At that time, being completely unattached to material enjoyment as well as the hellish man, you will return home back to Goddesse the mercy of Lord Kṛṣṇa.
Mercy of Lord Kṛṣṇa as explained by was to satisfy all the desires of the Praja giving them all the facilities of this world for an almost inconceivable amount of time, but guaranteeing to them also your devotional service because they are acting for the pleasure of the Lord. Actually, if a devotee has some desire then the Lord knows how to satisfied their desires at the same time bring them back to the service. Here the pachetas were following the order of their fathers and they were executed orders very carefully. At the same time, they were able to set aside especially the fact that the potatoes had worked together in a type of mutual friendship. That was something which gave Kṛṣṇa especially. This is a basic principle that Śrīla Bah requested devotees and his kind to work together in cooperative spirit.
Just as we see that the procedures have worked together for the purpose of performing a sacrifice. Actually the sanctuary movement of Mahjitani has methadone for many people working together. It’s not possible to have a full tier song without you have to have a cartel player and driver player and then you have a release singer and followers and so many different parts and parcels to that cooperative effort. Everyone has experience, and someone doesn’t sing in time or clamp and time. The point is, it’s not meant for concentrating, for cooperating what this type of a team effort, holding the individual souls working together at the same frequency, at the same wavelength of cooperation, becomes very. And so therefore, one gets multiple benedictions. The brachilis, they are working together like that.
In the time of Raw chaitanya Aloha, there were so many different spiritual masters, so many different devotees. There was not any other consciousness that it was one movement, there wasn’t any divisional consciousness. And in this way, everyone has simply tried their hardest to push on. The Sankirkan Mahabharata. We see in the lives of our previous acharyas that Duki Kṛṣṇa Das was sent to the navana by his spiritual master Guru, the disciple of. And he went sent there to study under Jīva Goswami. The greatest scholar of that time was Jīva Goswami, Vaishnava scholar. So it wasn’t unusual that the other spiritual masters would send their disciples to get some additional training in terms of high points of philosophical understanding of the Gauḍīya Vaishnava philosophy, especially from such an eminent scholar, Jilu Goswami. Not that there was any deficiency.
Everyone was giving the same personal knowledge, but Jilugoswami was ready experts. So there was that type of cooperative spirit over there, maybe fear, apprehension or something. Then Marathon Dasakur, he left his marathon was actually born as a prince. He was born in the Rhine family, great kings of k t r I t li village, K Turi kingdom, this by the side of the Padma Lotus river. And actually there’s a history that with Lord Caitanu Mahakabu, when he was in Ramkili with Rupert Sanatan on the way, suddenly he turned towards Kuri, which is not very far from there, and he became ecstatic and he started to call out Naotang, Naotang. And no one knew what he was talking about because it was just a mysterious thing. Later on, Mochi then he knew there would be a great devotion born.
So actually, when Narutan was born, it was already too late to have the association of. He was being trained up there by Reichstrass. His desire was always to join the movement of he would never get the exact opportunity. So finally he had a dream that he should go to Benado, that he ran off like anything. That was just what he was waiting for. And he went to Vindala, and there he tremendous service to. So. So finally, looking at taking a vow, taking disciples. He didn’t want to disrupt his emotional service with that verdict, but do the same. Several years of service at Narata, even cleaning up the place where he would go and pass his morning nature call bringing it out, doing this, he would never allow him to do such a service.
Finally, he hid one day and saw that it was now time we have been serving. He’d already told Lara he wouldn’t initiate it. He said, well, I can serve him anyway. He was determined. He wanted to take initiation. If he couldn’t take initiation or anything, he wanted to serve him for the rest of his life. Irregardless of whether he gave him a formal initiation or nothing. He had police survey from Lokanath. So Lokanak saw this in this tremendous service status, didn’t realize that he was actually very sincere. Then he called Marathon and said a new one. And if you did, he may have made a vow, but this is something more sacred. I will give you the chance. Another ten. Taqwa radically accepted initiation, was present with the fish, but he forbade. Kṛṣṇa asked Kaviraj to reveal anything about south.
He didn’t want to have his name, wouldn’t hire at all. It was the British just ordered a gift. People who didn’t get that, they didn’t feel obligated to land where they’re devoted. So Charia, who was the son of Kṛṣṇa of Chetanya Das and Lakshmi Priya Devī, actually Caitanya Das got his name when he happened to be president. He wanted to see Lord Caitanya. He went off to go to Nārada to see Lord Caitanya from his house leaders house in Jajigam. And then on his way, he was stopping to see Keshav Harti, who was an all respected friend and great. So he went to see him there. At that time, it just so happened Lord Che Tony was there to take sanyas. And he felt that this was the greatest thing that I was going to see. Lord, please come right here.
Whatever he is a coincidence with a great fortune for me. And just at that time, he was present when war Chaitanya was having the past time where the devote was. He was telling the barber, she said, you cut my hair. The barber fell in the streets and I can’t do it. I am going to chase on your test. If you don’t do it, I will get someone else to do it. She just do your duty. You’re a barber. I am just screaming. The barber was so cut, located on his beautiful hair. It was something which he was crying the whole time. When he first put the scissors to the hairdouse, there were literally thousands and thousands of people gathered around and the whole town had come out. And then when they saw that Lord Caitanya was about to have his haircut, everyone.
And then when Lord, when they first cut, everyone started weeping and crying. No, no. People were bathing and pulling out their own hearing anxiety. Why the Lord would do any type of therapy, because we are humble servants, we are fallen, so trying to become purified, we don’t want to identify ourselves with therapy. At least the Brahmacharis are those who are Brahma pravasta, other stages they’re requested to take out the outlook in terms of bodily consciousness, being that their body is to be maintained very nicely for the service of Kṛṣṇa, but not just that, relating the body to some external viewpoints in the Brahmacharya stage. So in this way, they couldn’t see that there’s no need for Lord Caitanya to go through these study programs, formatory activities, that he was not the ordinary person that had to go through Sanyam.
So then when I started this, it was just too much. The men and the women, they were crying and weeping, and it was a very great, painful situation. Then when Lord Caitany was about to take initiation, he asked he should bar. After he went to the bathroom again, he came back, put out his Sanyasi robes, asked if you know the mantra that one is supposed to get sanyas. And then he pulled him over and told the manifestation Bharati, or initiated. Actually, Keshavarasi is in real sense to disciple Lord Caitavan. That same mantra, Keshavar, to give back to Lord Caitana, like taking the Ganges water it back to the day. Because Keshe Bharat knew that Lord Shaytanya was in the supreme physician. Why should he give him initiation? He was also feeling his agents. And this way, actually, Lord Chaitanya was able to correct him.
So at that time, Keshav har said, your name is Śrī Kṛṣṇa Chaitanya. And when his name before Kṛṣṇa Das or Gaṅgā Das by the charya, when heard that in the whole pastime, he just came. When heard that, he just became completely overwhelmed in complete trance, and all he could say was repeat that name. He went back home and all this was ringing through his head. And with no meditation on this pastime, you see Kṛṣṇa Caitanya. You were just sitting under a tree for about just days and days. Just chain Chetanya. See Kṛṣṇa. So that’s why he got the name Caitanya Das. Everyone started calling him Caitanya dance because he was completely Caitanya conscious. So he was ordered by little Chetanya. He and his wife went. They had. His wife had a desire that I should have a child in Kansas.
And he said, after all these years, you’re in Māyā. I think that you’re in Māyā. He said, don’t misunderstand me. It’s not like that. Actually, I have some very deep feeling that I have that it’s the desire of Kṛṣṇa that we should have a child. Well, I heard that before. So then finally he had to give her the benefit of the doubt. And two very. So both of them, they went and decided to go and ask Chetani Mahatma. So that’s a very long past time. But in any case, he confirmed that I want you to have a child. And that child will be, Shrinivas will be a great devotee. They will do many works. So they went back and then they married. Kṛṣṇa consciously had a child, and that child was a shiny laughter, shiny laughs.
Of course, how he got to Vrindavan, that’s another drama, another great epic of determination and tragedy and separation. But finally he was able to reach Vrindavan and of course he wanted to see Jaytani Mahāprabhu. But that fortune was not granted, although he could bear many others. When he went to Vrindavan in search of Rupen Sanatan, they were nothing. Whether he was ordered by Rufusinat in his dream Goslami. So in this way, different ways and different means, the different acharyas, they had reached this place. They were contemporaries. Dukkhrishna Das became shaman and the pallid because he became so much in love with Sham Sundar form of the lord and wonderful worship for Lord Shayl Sunnah, that he became known as Shama Alamna. Sham Alamna, one who gets great pleasure from worshipping sham and then one who worships then the shaman of Pandit.
He was Pandit because he was very expert in understanding Kṛṣṇa Kantha’s philosophy. Naruto Masthaka was given the name Takuar or Mahasoy because of his great Vaishnav qualities. These names have some significance. They weren’t taken up. No one took on the name that. All right, you call me today for everyone will call me Takr. Or from today for you call me as Pandit and so on and so forth. These were given by senior vaishnavas. They’re given by devotees or by the sons of devotees in recognition of some specific quality or some specific activity that a person is doing Naratum Khakur in his own presence. Because of this, people used to call Kakur Mahashdeh because of his great poetic ability for expounding Kṛṣṇa Khan’s philosophy. Always he was Kṛṣṇa.
He was although a prince, although he could have ruled over a kingdom, he was the crown of the heir, as he didn’t rule. Therefore his uncle took over Santos Rai, I believe, his uncle and his great history of marathon. Similarly, Śrīnivasa was given Acharya because he was able to speak on the Bhāgavatam so expertly that the senior Vaishnava said that he’s speaking perfectly on the Bhāgavatam and he’s teaching by example Shamananda Pandit because also he was expert in the past like that, we had these different titles were also given to them. So these three were really enjoying themselves in Vrindavan. Marathon was having darshan and Sadh Kṛṣṇa. And they were visiting together, sometimes giving over dharma, circumambulating and taking visiting. At that time, the great Raghuna Das Goswami. And it was a wonderful association for them to be with all the senior vaishnavas.
At the time there was Lokhana Bugarba, Kṛṣṇa Das, Kaviraj, Raghuma Das Goswami, Shiva Goswami, Gopal, Bhaṭṭa Goswami and Bija Haridas and many senior associates of Rajitani and devotees who are all, of course, in the separation of Vorte, Tanya, Hamasama and others surviving in their worship and having a wonderful devotional service there in Mandala. So at that time the govila deity ordered, he suddenly spoke one day in front of all the devotees. He gave another view. Here they also do the same thing. His sincere servant, he has something to say and can’t remind him. Anyway. So at that time, just after everyone had offered their obeisances and quite unexpectedly, these husbands had been sunivaras and the Naruto. I can’t remember if he said all the other names that they will pay the books to the east. He gave an order like that.
He gave a date, all kinds of, or at least he gave the order and then that was it. So then after that, the instruction, the śrīnivas and all of them, they had no records. Shemded also was enlisted and the three of them were entrusted by all the Gauḍīya Vaishnavas to take the first book distribution expedition out, taking the original manuscripts of all the works of the Goswamis, at least many of the principal works and the Caitanya chennaming them. And to take all of those works to Navajiv, where there are so many scholars who would Ramanas, who could translate, transcribed those and copied them who were doing this type of activity were not in great abundance in other places. They were concentrated in Navati. So they.
Nearby there was a devotee king, he gave some armed guards and there was, because in those days it was a very difficult road with many bandits and many different kingdoms and small princely kingdoms one had to go through. So it was a very dangerous route. They had to walk all the way practically over about 1200 Nava Dwi. And then also they would generally follow the little ganges, I believe they call them any wrote. So Grand Turk wrote. They went around and visited all, got the blessings of all the great vice brothers. And actually, this was such a momentous occasion that people, the great Acharyas, like Rubin at that, he never left Radaratunda. He also came. They all came to see off the devotees.
They had a bullock cart with a big box with big wooden and brass box and a big lock where all the books were in. And that was on top of the bullock cards and armed guards, a few armed patrolmen. And then all these devotees, he also came. Everyone came to blood. This is the most momentous occasion of taking the books, these books now, I mean, they spent their whole lives writing these books so that they would be printed, so they would be copied and they would be distributed and so that the people would understand these great philosophical mysteries about Lord Caitana, about the philosophy of Chetan Mahāprabhu. This is such a momentous occasion for everyone. They all came out and to give their special mandate and blessing to Naruto Śrīnivas, Shaman Pandit, who were especially Shiva, the head of the party.
But the others were, of course, all equal contemporary. So then they went and up to the border. All of the Vaishnavs accompanied the same devotees, those book distributors. It was such a taking and seeing the devotees off on their book distribution. Actually, they all accompanied. It was at that time there was a very sacred song that was sung by Naruto. Of course, Nārada himself tells that Aynard is contributor, is really Śrīnivas. I am just helping. So he sang a song which all the acharyas present appreciate very much, that Lord Caitanya has empowered Lord Caitanya, his ocean of mercy. And that he has various energy which he engages in manifesting his desire. Some of these energies are engaged in writing transcendental literature, like we mentioned on. And some of these energies are engaged in distributing these transcendental natures.
And both of these energies of the Lord are on the same transcendental platform, those who are writing and those who are distributing. So that was appreciated by all of the devotees. And then they reached the edge of renown. They could go no further. So then this up to Matura. A few of the devotees like Jīva Goswami and a few of the younger devotee up to Matura, where they were received by so many dignitaries, many other great devotees there. From there they did a couple days and did some preaching, and then they went on and proceeded towards pretty arduous journey, many weeks of walking.
So some one another, they finally, they crossed over the plains of what’s known today at Bihar, came into the luscious green of Bengal, and they were very happy to be back in Bengal for visit men that they were getting very close to Navidui, very close to the fulfillment of their mission, where they could get the books printed and then from there where they could actually distribute them. The plan was that Shamron would take the literatures to Orissa, that Naraka would go to eastern Bengal, came to read from there, and that basically Śrīnivas would be reaching around the central area. This is some basic plan that they had developed, but it was not just a basic idea. So we are going.
And in the meantime, there was this king called Birambirdheendeh, and he was having an expert astrologer who used to be able to see who was coming down the road by theological speculation. And then he didn’t have a very good kingdom. He was a sub king under the Hussein Shah dynasty. It was in the jungles, more or less, of Bola Vishnu, poor, of course, it was quite a big kingdom, but there were so many people going by, felt that he should augment his treasury. So he had a band of secret servicemen, intelligence agency, and they were like the Green Berets. They would go out, though at nighttime as the midnight raiders. And according to the astrological calculation, they would raid travelers going by and as thieves. But they’d actually come and give all the bullies to him and he would pay them, reward them accordingly.
Normally this is not what a king should do, but he was a little bit greedy. At the same time, although he was having this little bit of really desire, he was a little bit attached to Yuri Bhāgavatam. Sometimes homas would preach to him and they would read the bhāgavatam, and he would like to listen to the quranic stories in the Bhāgavatam. Of course, it was never properly explained to him, but it was his habit to listen to the Bhagavad comet. Anyway. So what happened was this astrologer told him that these that Madeza ready the most valuable treasure. There’s this party of men and there’s a box. And this box contains the greatest priceless jewels. Priceless treasure and not very well protected. So then the king became very excited. This is very lusty. Go out and get this. Don’t spill any blood during the night.
Just take the treasure and bring it back and I will reward you. So then I. They went there and here, you know, there were a few patrolmen dozing off and the devotees were taking rest and just, you know, in the middle of the night they stole the box of books, took it back to the king. The king saw the big box, you know, with the big brass and the whole thing. He rewarded all the medicine. They hadn’t opened it, gave him the money, put it in the back room and he went. He was really getting open. Don’t waste so much time. I can have you waste gold. Just giving him a few chips for the midnight ratings. Couple hundred gold coins. No. Open up the box. What? What is that astrology? And he looked, what kind of books are these?
And he looked and he called it one of the pioneer prayers. And the pundit was looking and he said, well, all to do something about. Very puzzling, very difficult thing to understand the king. He would have said, now I am finished. Now I am finished. Now I am finished. I knew hiding would catch up to me. I have been stealing and stealing from all these materialists. There are a bunch of harm is anyway they simply use the money to send. But now it’s stolen from some great. There are religious books that means in the operata seem like the sun. But how get out of this offense. Finish the whole thing. Everything will be finished. I have done it. I have really done it now. So he was buried in. He sent out special emissaries. You must find whose book sentence. Whose book sentence. I have to.
I have to correct this. In the meantime, Naruto Śrīnivas Shamananda had been empowered by all the great vaishnavas, the previous Acharya, everyone. They woke up and looked, no, where the book? Where the book? They just went mad. They couldn’t believe it. They looked everywhere. They just were beating their heads against the ground and the trees. They were just thinking of their spiritual masters and the great Baishnavas and the great responsibility, how they felt. They couldn’t. They didn’t know whether to just immediately commit suicide, what to do. They were completely. They had to find these books that way. They finally they had to find. They looked everywhere around it. They couldn’t find something.
Ultimately, this was my responsibility is no, because he saw the others were practically about death in the anxiety, told him, listen, he goes and you go to Shamanam, you go to Kturi. I will send you information as soon as I find the books. I have to find them. There’s no use of all three of us. Let me preach when you come so far. I will get the books, don’t worry. Just no need for three of us preach. And as soon as I get the books, I will get them copied and I will send you information. And don’t worry. I am sure that when Gobindaji has given his order that this is some special desire of his, that we showing us how valuable we are. And someday we have to depend on his mercy. I know he will find the books this way.
He comforted them and said them Allah but himself. He was into complete anxiety. He was looking everywhere. The son had told him to go to this king Berang. So in the meantime, the king was incomplete any time. He couldn’t find these owners of these books anywhere. And he was sitting listening to the Bhāgavatan one day and Śrīnivasa charming. And they were giving some Māyā Mali explanation, some kind off the point explanation on the Bhāgavatam Śrīnivas king. I heard that, etcetera. This is not bona fide or something like that. Then you just don’t walk into a king’s courtroom and then kind of call out the king’s guru as being bogus. It’s one of the things that one would be very careful about doing.
But this suddenly struck so heavily, he very politely said it that this is very nice, you know, but I don’t find bhagata, I think, exactly, but it very politely did it. But the king’s promise took a great offense. So then immediately it was put on the. Put on the line that. All right, so then you explained, and if he wasn’t, had he been able to explain, he probably would have found himself lighter, a few pounds. The shrivas went and he took the baghdata and started to. The king was immediately impressed that it was a very great devotion. It was a very great Saint Lutheran, a very wonderful features and very fulgent kind of appearance. So then Śrīdivas he started to lecture on the Bhagavad and destroying all the different off the point explanation. Perfect. Right off the point explanation.
And then the king was very impressive. He got the idea. This made me the owner of this book. So he took Śrīnivas in the back room and he said, who are you from here? So then ŚrīNivas practically interiors. He said, śrī Kṛṣṇa, caitan imam, the supreme personality of God Kṛṣṇa has come down on this KAlA yuga, associated with this intimate associate, eternal. They have come here. They were in awe. No one could recognize their actual glory. But they initially, finally made to understand. They went and they were simply distributing out this mercy of pure Kṛṣṇa consciousness of pure Kṛṣṇa prayment freely, without any discrimination, who is qualified and who is unqualified. They went to Jagannath Purī. There they were preaching, and Nitinanda was preaching in Bengal.
And now he came up to Kejuri, to Ramakili, ordered Ruptana to go to Vindavan and excavate the holy places of Kṛṣṇa’s pastimes. They went there, their instruction. Kṛṣṇa asked Kaviraj, wrote the whole pastimes of Caitanya Mahāprabhu. They had written so many translated literatures. He explained the qualities of those great people. And then he explained how the qualities of Narakan, who was the king of the prince, the heir of the throne, who actually not very far away, knew about that whole family and everything. And he explained how he was also entrusted with him with these books. They were carrying these books over, and the books were stolen. And now everything comes completely. His life is just less than death. And somehow or another he managed to get these books. So then King Pachinabadi could understand that this is the person.
He fell at his feet and he grabbed his feet and he prayed that I committed a great offense. That is, I have stolen those books. I have these books. He said, please, you must forgive me for my offense. Take me to the books. Get him out of the book immediately. The king went and showed him the books. And he saw the books. He was just overwhelmed with the joy of finally got these books, initiated your great devotee. So preaching had been told what he would have to do with the accepted initiation. And I agreed. I simply want to accept your spiritual master. So he put it off for that day. And then the king went and then told his wife everything. The queen, what happened to queen? She went also independently. She went and fell down at Śrīnivasa’s lotus feet also. Please initiate me.
Don’t just this material world leading in this material consciousness. He wanted to benedict my husband. I want to benedict. And so there they had an initiation where he gave the Hari Naam to both the king and the queen. And he was established. He was offered by the king to be the king guru, I mean, to be the actual official guru of the whole kingdom. He didn’t get the second initiation, this guy, first initiative. So in this way, first consideration was, Sunni Lama should get the books up to Navaj. He went with the books to Navaj. The king sent a special guard to take the books there and get them copied. He also said, listen, I will copy them here. I will bring the Brahmans here. He says, you just please stay here. We will all die now if you go attached to him.
So it was worked out. Some of the books that got copied, messages were sent off to Naruto. In this way. The books were copied and then they were multiplied and they were sent off. And the devotees took the books and they preached everywhere they went. They lectured from these books. And people were, what are these books? What are these tense and messages that are coming? And then in this way, the movement of Lord Chaitanya became firmly established by the knowledge based upon the books, which the prophets always told us, the books have the basis. So we can see that how there was a complete cooperative effort in the movement of Lord Chitanya. And because of that, the teaching in different parts is going on simultaneously. There wasn’t any kind of feeling of any separation.
This has been established also in the International Society for Kṛṣṇa Consciousness, that this mood of cooperative, friendly spirit of pushing on the movement of Chaitanya Mahabharata without any kind of materialistic envy which is there in the material world, and that is a great glory. So as long as we continue in this type of mood, as is exemplified by our previous acharyas, for preaching, the movement of distributing the literatures of our previous acharyas books, this will guarantee the special mercy of our heart within that special mercy of the previous acharyas. And there’s nothing more we could desire, nothing more than we could achieve. Of course, devotees that are coming out of the material world, they have to understand that there are many stages that they have to go through. Actually, this higher stage of complete surrender and cooperation is the most elevated stage.
(Side B of the Cassette)
That is the pure Sankirtan rule. Just as the residents of Renatapa completely work with each other for pleasing Kṛṣṇa, in the same way the competition and the spiritual was there, how they could please Kṛṣṇa better. But there was no material type of envy where one wanted to push down someone else who was actually sincerely dedicated to the movement. There are many circumstances, as we have seen, where someone who wasn’t preaching properly, but a person was reading the Bhāgavatana. Śrīnivas challenged him, no, this is not a correct interpretation. He couldn’t tolerate to see Kṛṣṇa be improperly spoken about. It was offensive. So even at the risk of his own neck, he stuck it up because he wanted to protect the pure philosophy of the Bhāgavatam.
So for someone coming out of the material world force, he has to fight with the material senses, who are always trying to become the controller of every activity. And these senses are very strong. The mind is very strong. So the mind, the senses are always bringing us again and again to the thought of sense gratification. So one who cannot control thoughts of sense gratification, or one who is able to fix the mind simply unpleasing the spiritual master Kṛṣṇa, or someone who cannot control the mind from thinking about wanting to just end this material misery of repeated birth and death. For all the three types of categories, one is recommended to simply absorb oneself of your devotional service, simply perform pure devotional service, don’t make any demands. Whatever the mind goes, just bring it back to the service again and again.
In Kṛṣṇa, he will set his mind one spiritual and material desires accordingly. Just as Śrīnivas, rather as the prajetas, they had some order, they had some desire from their father that we should expand it. The progeny should establish Kṛṣṇa consciousness or a good kingdom in the universe. So they had to fulfill certain programs, and then after that, they were going to go back to Godhead, and they’re going to simply engage in pure Kṛṣṇa conscious activity without any material, even a pyramid, change of course, even what they were doing with all the devotional service. So in one sense, it really wasn’t material, although apparently it was material from the outward viewpoint. So when we are fighting with our minds, when we’re fighting with our senses, trying to become established in this standard of pure devotional service, that also is considered to be a glorious stage.
The mind may go so many times a week, but as long as we don’t give up, as long as we again and again bring it back, he can confide in our spiritual master. If we have some specific desire which we are not able to control. And then he can see how our service may be adjusted accordingly, or how, if it is compatible with Karnas, and how we may be able to dovetail that or preach to us, and how we should become more tolerant and more determined because of something which is detrimental to us. In this way, each person has got some individual problem. Who can talk to this temple president or talk to the spiritual master? How to overcome a particular individual desire comes up again and again.
But the basic standard is that we are there to struggle, just that we think about something and we have a desire. That doesn’t mean that this is going to be a great impediment to us. If we can simply bring our mind again and again back to Kṛṣṇa. It’s not unnatural that we have thoughts coming our mind. These thoughts come in our mind right up to the point where we get our spiritual body. As long as we have a material body, actually we’re going to have material thoughts. But whether or not we actually surrender to try to satisfy those thoughts or all of the thoughts that we have all day, how to please the spiritual master, how to serve the deity, how to preach for the pleasure of Lor Chaitani Mahakabu. So we surrender ourselves to pleasing the Lord.
And even although our whole life and our whole thought is dedicated like that, sometimes out of nowhere, these different thoughts or dreams or things come in our mind. We know that it’s just due to millions of births we have spent in this material world. It’s just a reflection of so many activities that we have done in the past. We don’t surrender. We don’t step back and take backward God. We don’t retreat to try to satisfy those mirages coming back from our material past. We have to be very careful who to identify with. We have to identify with our spiritual thoughts. We have to identify with our spiritual activities, with our spiritual master, and with the superior personality of God. Then, even if the thoughts come in our mind, which are agītāting, which are maybe material thoughts, we don’t identify with them. They’re foreign to us.
Why are these foreigners are coming and bounding? Why are these? This is from my previous life. That’s my when I was dead in material life. Because, as we mentioned yesterday, a person who’s serving in the material world, they’re serving dead men, therefore they’re considered to be dead. And a devotee who is serving Kṛṣṇa, he’s considered to be alive. All the people in the world, they’re enjoying some happiness and they’re enjoying some misery. But in a technical sense, we consider them to all be dead life. Because even though they are moving, this matter is dead and they’re serving dead better. So a person whose life is directed at serving the dead is as good as death. And it’s only the devotees who are directed at serving Kṛṣṇa, who is alive, who is eternal supreme spirit, supreme personality of Godhead.
So the devotees, they’re actually alive and their life is meant for eternal life. So therefore we only see. Prabhupda was sitting once in the airport, I remember, and he said that for me all these people are walking corpses. They’re all dead. It’s only the devotees that are actually alive. Their lives, even they may be struggling or even they may be having still frauds coming from the past. That’s all superficial. They’re already on the correct path back to home, back to God. They’re alive because they’re serving life. They’re serving the living spirit, the materialist, even though they may be active and walking around. But if you idolize, it’s all for the service of matter also that they can have a better brand of cigarettes or a better gratification of this or that. With all objects of the senses is there a goal?
And those objects of the senses are all dead matter. Without spiritual understanding, everything they’re doing is simply leading to death. And with Kashmir, everything they’re doing is leading to life. So who is alive and who is dead? We have to be very careful not to identify with dead matter or any echoes or reflections coming from our association. This material world of the dead matter. Everything we do has to be for the pleasure of Guru Kṛṣṇa. Then we remain alive. Real life means spiritual life. Otherwise it’s just a shadowy existence. There’s a hope that they can become alive. That’s the only thing. Technically, they’re dead. Only the hope is there that if they turn their face to Kṛṣṇa, then they can come alive. That hope is there.
So that hope is offered by the book distributors, by those who are writing the books, by those who are distributing the books, by those who are living and teaching, by their example. Sometimes one is worded that, no, you should accept this responsibility. You should. For your christian consciousness. You should be very. Sometimes he said, Lord, you should better try to remain a baby Charlie. In this way for different people, sometimes different instructions. In this sense, the Lord himself told the pajadas, you should get married. He had some purpose, God knows. So like that, no matter what position 1 may be, in what condition or status of life, one should actually try to dedicate everything to Kṛṣṇa, simply carry out the instruction. If every activity we do, we can connect. This is, this is pleasing to my spiritual master, this is pleasing to Kṛṣṇa.
Then that is a source of unlimited inspiration, happiness, unlimited benefit to countless other soul. And as soon as we accept to do something on the basis it’s going to simply be pleasing to my senses. And it’s not that it’s actually something that is going to benefit me, Kṛṣṇa, consciously. Then we again fall as imitators of the materialism. We start to serve the dead manner and as a result we become entangled in the three of implications and we start to become anxiety. We start to lose our natural spiritual happiness and peacefulness. In other words, we become in life. So we have to be very careful to avoid the illusions and to remain on our spiritual platform. Thus we will always be happy and we will be able to make others happy. Any questions? See? Yes.
Last night you said there wasn’t time to tell the story about ponder how Girardhar had met his spiritual master. Maybe there’s a little time now you can hear that was just a test last night. Unused toilet paper. Sometimes they ask, why is it I am in christian consciousness, but at the same time I have so many different types of thoughts that are coming through my mind even after getting involved in christian prophecy, how many years they have been involved? I mean, is this going on all the time? Isn’t it? Jamuna Acharya, one of our previous acharyas would pray, and every time I think of man and woman having sexual relations, that my face becomes sour and my lip curls like bitterly tasted a negative of the eternal pastimes, what have you. So the point is that even he was a great Acharya.
But he admitted that sometimes he had the thought, sometimes he had that thought, but he didn’t see that as any source of pleasure. When he had got the original origin and source of all pleasure, then that was not significant at all. In fact, it was disgusting to think of that as any kind of source inflation. So the point is that Śrīla Prabhupāda commented that even up to the stage of Baba, as long as one has a material body, then any function of the body you are always capable of thinking of. And when one actually gets Kṛṣṇa Prema, then one is completely separated from the bodily thought. At that time. It’s like a dry coconut inside. Just shake it and it’s completely separate. So the devoted to get brain ash at that point he realized it’s his spiritual sympathy.
So then at that time, the material body just kind of going on in attitude, and the one after another material thought that the way that it’s hooked up now, that doesn’t come when one is actually just identifying with the spiritual body. And the material body is actually, there’s no direct connection. But until one reaches that particular level of realization, then there’s every possibility, and rather it happens, that one is going to have very thought which are natural to the body. But as one is advancing in Kṛṣṇa consciousness from the platform of cleansing the nartanariti, getting rid of all the dirts in the heart, to the platform of Mishta, fixed bhakti and getting tased and attached, and finally, baba, that percentage wise, I believe in that bhakti Vinod gave a certain percentage.
It’s like a scale when you have svatha, little faith and you’re coming to listen. At that time, you have, I believe you said you have like about $0.06 worth of, $0.06 out of a dollar worth of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, and about $0.94 worth of Māyā consciousness. And then you associate with the devotees, it becomes twelve and a half cents. And then your māyā consciousness becomes 87 and a half. And then when you’re actually practicing devotional service and accepting the spiritual master, but you still have so many material disease desires mechanically controlled by performing Sarada Bhakti, at that point, you have 25% Kṛṣṇa consciousness and 75%. You still have a tendency to think of material consciousness. And then when we become fixed, then it goes like that, 37 and a half ventaste is 50% and a shakti is 75%.
And when you bother, then they say that, well, it’s already 100%, but it’s actually 99%. So that 1% still, the thought may come of something like that. So devotee is not a question of time. You can remain on the anart and the Vritti stage birth after birth, if you don’t want to try, if you don’t actually seriously go to the next stage of Nishna. And even then the thoughts may come, but then you’re just fixed. Even they come just like you’re fortified. And then when you actually get paced, then less thoughts are coming. And when they come, they’re even less significant. When you’re attached, then they’re practically insignificant. And then when you’re actually at the stage of Baba, then they come with this disgusting thing you don’t even dislike, you know, just like being haunted or something by just something karma.
It’s just like a nightmare kind of thing. But until one actually gets to the spiritual body, then he starts coming. The person reacts to them differently. But even in the anarchism, maybe even they come, even they may appear. Oh, you know, they might appear to some extent. They may have some appeal. At the same time, one with intelligence knows that, no, I won’t follow this. And then by chanting, one gradually then fortifies, gets fortified and comes up to becoming fixed. So then when responds come, the peel is. Then he’s already fixed. It’s like then there’s always, like a neutrality between him and the thoughts. You know, he’s like, it’s 50 at that time. He can thousand five. At the same time they’re there. They have some strength in this way. Gradually, one is becoming stronger and stronger. By practicing devotional service.
It’s not a question time. It’s a question of advancement. If a person is sincerely, the thoughts may be there. But it’s how the person reacts. Always focusing himself, how he’s actually practicing. Whether he’s chanting his rounds properly. Whether he’s actually serving. Whether he’s serving. If he’s able to bring back his mind again and again from these thoughts under Kṛṣṇa consciousness. And then gradually, as one sticks to it, he becomes more and more Kṛṣṇa conscious. To be able to defend against these different kind of thoughts. Until on the higher platforms, the defense is almost automatic. That’s known as raga nuget, or spontaneous devotional service. One spontaneously wants to serve. And if a thought comes, he spontaneously rejects it. In the initial stages, one has to consciously reject it. 1 may have to philosophically defeat it.
He may be overwhelmed at that time with a desire, oh, I should have this. I should do this. And he’s like, no, this is my. But, you know. And he’s in that type of a situation. Then he has to bring back what does the spiritual master say? What does the scriptures say? And then use some kind of defense, you know, truth and beauty or this or that or whatever. Right? And then you have to bring. And then you can fortify yourself against that literary idea. And then victory. You got free from that, you know, attack of Māyā. And then this happens. And when it sticks to and gradually comes up enough. But this struggle is glorious. This is already he’s on the path of life. Just like I met one blue devotee. I mentioned disciple. Not my disciple, but another disciple devotee.
And he said, he’s just completely annoyed. And, you know, he’s on the platform lamenting that even I surrendered to Māyā. But she’s not satisfying me. I mean, it’s not so easy going to the material world, and it’s just not so easy to find sense gratification, you know, maybe I should be Kṛṣṇa, you know, that kind of wishy washy platform, you know, very difficult to deal with such a person. But people, they’re struggling in the material world. It’s not that I know you’re in the material world. We get. Sometimes, I think devotees sentimentally think we plead so strongly about Māyā and about material desire back in the line. They think that, yes, if I go into material world immediately, I will be able to enjoy. I am giving up all that enjoyment. They never knew that there was so much giving up.
And actually, it’s not so easy enjoyment to the world, especially once one is devoting, then ones like Kṛṣṇa’s care, you may not let one enjoy, or may enjoy and then pull out the rug. So the thing is that one should be very careful of falling into all those kind of subtle illusions and know that devotional service is a gradual process. And it’s a struggle with your mind and your senses. By clinging to Lotus sea that we tai dwar, by the mercy of the spiritual master, the one can succeed. Kṛṣṇa is stronger than mine. But if we have to cling to Kṛṣṇa, if we think that without Kṛṣṇa, without guru, without our chaitanyas mercy, somehow overcome Māyā, no hope. We need that special mercy, and we get that mercy. Kim, too, for the asking.
Even if we stumble in afraid they will help pull us and bring us back. Stumbling is not but the endeavor that we don’t give up the fight. We don’t give up the struggle to actually get above this material illusory platform. And once you can get over the first three, four steps, once you get up to fixture, or as long as one is careful not to devote it, not to allow again those type of weeds to come out, then one is guaranteed success. The thing is instructed is that we should know that all of my disciples, he said, are pure devotees. They’re all pure devotees. They’re all dedicating themselves to the movement of Chetanya Mahāprabhu. And you should respect them like that sometimes, you know, we tend to criticize or find fault with different devotees very easily.
Of course, in some cases it may be warranted, but in general, one should be very cautious in this regard, because everyone is a devotee. Someone may have more service under his belt and someone may have less. Of course, we’re not always the only people that we’re not the ultimate scorekeepers. That’s Kṛṣṇa and spiritual master. But we can get some idea that some people may be performing more service than others. It’s not a secret, but of course, the exact score that’s being kept by higher authorities. And we should be very careful about offending home or any devotee, because every devotee is dear to Kṛṣṇa and is on the same spiritual path. Śrīla Prabhupāda in this regard said that, well, can they, my God brothers, after Bhati Siddhartha left, they fought with each other and they have some disagreement, even worked together, he says.
But I see that in my presence sometimes you’re arguing with each other. This is very painful. So of course, somehow, now that we’re able to continue working together. But Alban Prabhupāda advises us to be very careful about this useless criticism. This type of fault finding or not accepting members of ISKCON has actually been create devotees. Every creature, every devotee is a pure devotee. If you’re devoting me, one who’s serving without any condition that I have to. In India, people put a flag on your temple. If you give me $10 million or give me this like that, they make me whatever I get, I will give you 50%. There’s so many like different kind of devotees that do service and immediately pray for some result. But the devotees in ISKCON in general, they’re not praying for any result. Therefore, technically, they’re all peer to believe.
Some may be more advanced than others in terms of whether that what platform they’re on in the Eightfold level of advancement. But nonetheless, they’re all practicing pure devotional service. Therefore, they’re all pure devotees. They, like Bhava said, mangoes at different stages of rightness, but they’re all mangoes. So they have to be careful to abandon the devotee or to think that they’re not too devoted due to some type of material calculation when they’re actually practicing the path of motion. So according to whatever service we’re given by aspiration master, we have to carry out and perform that emotional service as best as we can. Someone may be able to perform better. That doesn’t mean we should give up.
We should try to perform it as best as we can, take the help from anyone who’s able to do it better, see how they’re doing, and try to improve ourselves. Ultimately, Kṛṣṇa is more satisfied by effort and by good effort. Then he also gives benediction for bringing more and more souls to the association of such people. Does that answer your question? Yes, from the scriptures I see nothing about the appointment of a guru. It’s only one thing. There is appointment of a guru in scripture. In fact, in every sampradāya, the previous spiritual master generally nominates who will be a spiritual master after. And the Ramanuja Sampradāya, and the Madhva Sampradāya in the Vishnu Samfordaya. All the different. The spiritual master always will nominate. Generally speaking, who will be the Acharya after him.
It’s not a hereditary thing, but it’s something that he knows his disciples. And he says that this is going to be the next ataria in our society. Our spiritual master said that I am not going to appoint anyone ataria like that. Who will be the Acharya? Who will be via what authority? For the whole society. Everyone has to follow him. Generally, what happens is that the previous spiritual master, he appoints one disciple to be in charge of all the others. And he’s the next Acharya. Just like who was the tip. Campo Rishabh Dev appointed Bharat Maharaj. Practically, he was like the next atari. He told all your brothers, have to follow Bharat. But that’s what generally happens. Appointment. See, there was a controversy in Nagodia Sampradāya, in that one guru wasn’t appointed to be an Acharya.
But he went to the high court and he tried to get a Supreme Court order saying he was the Acharya. Now, where is it that, you know, if the guru doesn’t make you an Acharya, how can you go outside to the Supreme Court or to, you know, from, you know, some material institution and be appointed to a spiritual post? That type of appointment, that’s bogus. But the guru, he always appoints an Acharya. Prabhupāda, our conqueror specifically said, I am not appointing any Acharya to be the one authority that he worked together on the governing body commission. But I will appoint some people to initiate and to continue the Samford diet, to continue the Guru param hurrah. They will initiate, but they won’t be like the absolute authority for the whole, you know, for the whole society like that.
For that, he’s given a separate instruction, which is the governing body. Commission is kind. But that’s definitely always been the program that the spiritual master will nominate, who will be Acharya, who will initiate after him. Whether one is the overall Acharya for all the disciples, or whether he’s an Acharya or some other arrangement initiating it or some other arrangement. That program is always there. But Sheytanya said, Amaraviya, on my order you become a guru. So that order, one has to get the order without getting the order. If he just says, no, I am Guru, that’s not moral. One has to receive the order of his spiritual master to take up that responsibility without being authorized. No one can be a spiritual master. So Śrī the prophet requested all of his disciples to become qualified spiritual masters and represent the teachings of Kṛṣṇa to everyone.
They’re a different type of spiritual masters, and everyone is requested in the Navajos of Kajnas to actually perfectly represent the Bhagavad Gītā and the sum of Bhāgavatam. And that is also spiritual master. The specific responsibility of initiating is just one aspect of being spiritual master, which of course is a formal aspect where the disciple can only have one initiating guru, but he may receive instruction or help from various advanced God brothers, even as well as God brothers of the spiritual master. And if anyone perfectly is representing the words and the teachings of Kṛṣṇa and his representatives, then in that instance he’s a bona fide spiritual master. So we need to have millions of spiritual masters who can perfectly represent Kṛṣṇa consciousness and can deliver living entities from their doubts and their anxiety.
We would also be very happy if you also became a spiritual master. But one has to be qualified before one can be a spiritual master, he has to hear. If you hear properly, then you can repeat properly without hearing properly, without being properly trained. If one tries to be a spiritual master and misdirect someone, then also one is responsible, even if someone may not be anything. But if he gives an instruction and that instruction actually harms someone’s spiritual life, he’s responsible for giving a mis instruction or for misrepresenting Kṛṣṇa. Someone has to be very careful when giving instruction to give the instruction which is authorized. If someone gives any motivated or false instruction, then that also is responsible for that be.
Why do ya go see? What if I don’t? Yakoro jamajan yakura from within ramdhenne get out.
