Śrī Gaurāṅga’s Attachment to Scriptural Studies; His Father’s Ban of His Studies (Part two)

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi 7.133

pāṇḍityādi pauruṣa-sattveo dāridra-sambhāvanā; svīya ukti-poṣaka sva-dṛṣṭānta kathana—
sākṣātei ei kene nā dekha āmāta
paḍiyāo āmāra ghare kene nāhi bhāta?

Jayapatākā Swami: Just see, my life is such an example. Although I am educated, I don’t have an abundance of wealth and food stocks in my house.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi 7.134

pakṣāntare, nitānta murkherao āḍhyatva-hetu daridra paṇḍita-saṅghera tadadhīnatva-svīkāra —
bhāla-mate varṇa uccāriteo ye nāre
sahasra paṇḍita giyā dekha tā’ra dvāre

Jayapatākā Swami: May be a person may not be able to even pronounce the alphabets, but he has thousands of panditas waiting at his doorway.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi 7.135

jar̤apāṇḍityādi jība-pauruṣa viśvapoṣaṇa-kāraṇa nahe, viśvambhara kṛṣṇai ekamātra viśvera poṣaka o pālaka—
ataeva vidyā-ādi nā kare poṣaṇa
kṛṣṇa se sabāra kare poṣaṇa-pālana”

Jayapatākā Swami: In other words, even once learning and other material qualities do not maintain one. Kṛṣṇa maintains everyone

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi 7.136

tathāhi.

viṣṇu-pūjakerai akleśe deha-tyāga o deha-yātrā-nirvāha-yogyatā—
anāyāsena maraṇaṁ
vinā dainyena jīvanam
anārādhita govinda-
caraṇasya kathaṁ bhavet

Translation: “For one who has never worshiped the lotus feet of Lord Govinda, how is it possible for Him to live in comfort and die in peace?”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi 7.137

ślokārtha—
“anāyāse maraṇa, jīvana dainya vine
kṛṣṇa sevile se haya, nahe vidyā-dhane

Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: Nahe,—sambhava haya nā.

Jayapatākā Swami: (13:00) To die peacefully, to live without poverty, by worshipping Kṛṣṇa, that is possible. Not by one’s education or wealth.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi 7.138

kṛṣṇa-kṛpāi kleśaghnī, pracura jaḍa-sampada nahe—
kṛṣṇa-kṛpā vine nahe duḥkhera mocana
thākila vā vidyā, kula, koṭi-koṭi dhana

Jayapatākā Swami: One’s sadness and lamentation is not eradicated without performing devotional service. One’s sadness cannot be eradicated even if one has lots of money and an exalted education or an aristocratic family. One’s sadness is not eradicated by this. Devotional service and kṛṣṇa-kṛpa are on equal levels. Without Kṛṣṇa’s mercy, you cannot do devotional service. Without Kṛṣṇa’s mercy, one cannot get one’s suffering and lamentation eradicated. Good education, sufficient money, and aristocratic family by themselves cannot do this.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi 7.139

kṛṣṇa-kṛpā-hīnera utkṛṣṭa sampad sattveo ādhyātmikādi duḥkha vā 'tāpatraya—yā’ra gṛhe āchaye uttama upabhoga
tā’re kṛṣṇa diyāchena kona mahāroga

Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: Upabhoga,—vilāsa-sambhoga.

Jayapatākā Swami: Without the mercy of Lord Kṛṣṇa, even if one has lots of money, he cannot be freed from spiritual and other sufferings. Even if one has opulent situation in his house, Kṛṣṇa may send him some deadly disease.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi 7.140

kṛṣṇa-kṛpā-hīna tritāpa-kliṣṭa dhanīra durdaśā-varṇana—
kichu vilasite nāre, duḥkhe puḍi’ mare
yā’ra nāhi, tāhā haite duḥkhī bali tā’re

Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: Vilasite, —bhogavāsanā-mūle vihāra karite.

Jayapatākā Swami: In spite of all his material opulences, he burns in the different kinds of sadness. That person who has nothing, his sadness is not as intense, as that person who has opulence.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi 7.141

jīvera sarva-sampad sattveo kṛṣṇecchā vyatīta sabai asambhava o kṛṣṇecchānusārei sakala yathārtha paricālita
eteka jāniha,—thākileo kichu naya
yā’re yena kṛṣṇa-ājñā, sei satya haya

Jayapatākā Swami: Know this for sure, that having material opulence in themselves doesn’t mean anything. Those who have the mercy of Kṛṣṇa, they are truly happy.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi 7.142

tāvat tileka duḥkha nāhika uhāra

Jayapatākā Swami: As long as I live, I will see to it that Viśvambhara has no suffering. As long as this body has life, I will see to it that even a sesame seeds’ quantity of sadness will not come to my son.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi 7.144

kṛṣṇakei rakṣaka baliyā dṛḍha viśvāsa, putrera bhāvi-durdaśā smaraṇe duścintāgrastā śacīke miśrera utsāha-pradāna—

murkha hai’ putra mora rahu mātra ghare”

Jayapatākā Swami: Our son should no longer go out to study. Better He stays at home. Even if my son is called uneducated, He should simply stay in the house.

Jayapatākā Swami: Jagannātha Miśra called his son, Viśvambhara, and told, “Listen to what I have to tell you.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi 7.147

śapatha pradānapūrvaka viśvambharake pāṭhatyajanārtha ādeśa—
āji haite āra pāṭha nāhika tomāra
ihāte anyathā kara,—śapatha āmāra

Jayapatākā Swami: From today on, you will no longer study. You do anything else, this is my desire.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi 7.148

pāṭhahīna avasthāya viśvambharera gṛhe avasthāna-vāñchā—
ye tomāra icchā, bāpa, tāi diba āmi
gṛhe vasi’ parama-maṅgale thāka tumi”

Jayapatākā Swami: Jagannātha Miśra said, “It is my desire, you simply stay at home. Whatever you want, I will give you.” You remain in supreme auspiciousness.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi 7.149

miśrera prasthāna, viśvambharera adhyayana-tyāga—
eta bali’ miśra calilena kāryāntara

nā laṅghe janaka-vākya, paḍite nā yāya

Jayapatākā Swami: The protector of eternal religious principles, Gaurāṅga Mahāprabhu, did not disobey His father’s orders and He no longer went to study.
