The following is a lecture on Caitanya-līlā pastime given by His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami Mahārāja on August 26, 1979 – in Switzerland.
Their spiritual eyes became awakened. In the school of journal we would observe, of course they are simply by their looking and smiling and rubbing and pulling their chin. They are not knowing that what they are see benefiting. But we know how much they are all that simply by this holy Darshan, by this holy vision that they are already now in the orbit of Kṛṣṇa. So many people were accepting the Mahā for shadows. So many people were purchasing books. All these people are unlimitedly glorified. We are going over the Bahnhof street Strauss I was told that below the street were all the big vaults where all the money is being stored. And of course people are working so hard to accumulate this wealth. But of course they may accumulate so much even they may be the owner of this vast bank.
But at the time of death, everything is finished. So although their material bank balance may be in five figure six figure seven figure. But their spiritual bank balance was zero. So what happened is by this preaching process, by festival of course so many people immediately are given the access their bank balance, spiritual Kṛṣṇa balance. This is given an idiot some credit Festival Ben doesn’t mention of expertise by contour the fourth and Khadijay. So even a person who has got no balance, he may spend millions of births in this material world, but he’s got no spiritual balance. So by even giving him one, you see one as a bank balance that is unlimited times more valuable than none. So of course not only do they have the Darshan of Jagannath and they’re taking prasad, so many are taking books.
So this way the devotees, they’re trying to simply make everyone really fortunate spiritually. They’re going and simply giving everyone good fortune. Śrīla Prabhupāda’s idea of course is how to make the whole world very fortunate, completely fortunate. In Kṛṣṇa Consciousness and Śrīla Prabhupāda he would go to different parts of the world and he would encourage all the different devotees how to they should increase their preaching and intensify their spreading of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. So Śrīla Prabhupāda, because of his position he was seeing all the different parts of the world and how to how each of them have their interrelation for preaching. And of course Śrīla Swami Vishnu Pad, although he is the Acharya GBC for what one section of the world, I must offer my humble respects that actually his vision. His vision goes throughout the whole global strategy.
And he has a keen vision in overall Bhargasram Dharma and overall spreading of Kṛṣṇa Consciousness, which is a great inspiration for us at Māyāpur Project So this morning, I don’t know why, but as soon as I woke up all morning I was thinking about this one pastime of Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu and his devotees at the rath yātrā festival 500 years ago. It’s a very short pastime, yet I don’t know why, just all morning the thought is again and again coming. And I am getting some kind of great joy simply by remembering this one pastime. This is of course, when you know that after the Jagannath and Supada Balaram had gone on the rad, then Lord Chetangi divided up all his devotees into seven Sankirtan parties. And then they began to chant each of them independently in kīrtana.
With each party having their own dance, their own leader, etc. And then Lord Chaitanya, when he himself started to dance, then all these parties came and crowded around to see Lord Caitanya’s dance. Of course no one can imitate or even imagine the dancing of Lord Caitanya because he is Kṛṣṇa himself. But when Lord Chaitanya, of course they tried to give us an idea that he spun around so fast that it was in a circle that it was like someone taking a firebrand an end of stick. If you light fire and just turn, how you only see one circle. And this way Lord Chaitanya was going so fast you could see one whole circle of his simply movement but without seeing his form. And of course sometimes would start forming at the mouth. And that form the devotees should take as Mahaprashad. Sometimes he would.
His teeth would start to chatter and his arms would become elongated. And the joint of his elbow would become 18 inches and separated, simply held together by the. By the skin about 35 centimeters. And then sometimes all his arms and everything would go inside his body like a turtle. And he would become very small, but much more. Then he would jump up and start dancing. And wherever he put his feet, it would seem that the whole earth was tilting in that direction. And then he started to perspire. And blood started to come out from his perspiration hole. And he started to cry. And the tears were coming out of his eyes like shooting water from a syringe. Then we enter Wein on the plane came as I. And people were getting soaked from the tears flying from his eyes.
So the Leela which I remembered was just one small portion. During that time you see Śrīvas from Navodepara, Panchita Śrīvas. He was absorbed in watching Lord Shaitan’s dance. And he was completely in Samadhi watching this. And so at that time King Praktaparuta he was also trying to see. So his servant Harishchandra kept poking Śrīvas asking him to indicate to him to move aside so the king could see mo Chaitanya dance. That’s enough. So when Sivas was watching lo Chaitanya suddenly kept feeling this poking in his side. He became disturbed that he was being distracted from seeing. So finally he turned around and he slept. And then he went back and kept looking at Lord. This is the pastime. For some reason all morning, I mean that Dalakur’s Harishanda became agītāted.
He was going to go to say something to Sivas but protect Ruth stopped him, said no, he’s leaving here simply in ecstasy of Lord. This of course what this gives me realization is how devotional service and devotees they are persons, they are personalities and they are individuals. They are not dead, they are not just stone as the Mayabadis would like to say. Everyone is stone or everyone is one, but they are people. But the difference is that they are perfectly absorbed in the devotion to Lord Caitanya and Kṛṣṇa must be the same. Ordinarily someone watching the soccer game or football game or some sports if someone is bothering, he may become angry. But here the Śrīvasivas he is absorbed in watching. So there’s no comparison between his impatience at the distraction and the impatience of ordinary materialists.
So in the Chaitanya Bhagavad there’s one sloga that says that there are still today Lord Chaitanya’s Leela is going on and he was the rare fortunate person. He can see this transcendental Leela even today. Of course, this is not isolated simply to the Leela which is going on at Māyāpur. Of course one is fortunate. He can hear the Kīrtana of Lord Chaitanya and Śrīvas still going on at night. But there’s not limited to that. And Śrīla Prabhupāda’s devotees and the whole ISKCON society of spreading what Chaitanya movement. Prabhupāda has described once in Māyāpur that this is the Carmel. Therefore this is his Leela. This is his same extension of His Leela as the Abba. So he is manifesting his pastimes through the Iskana society.
So this life one time there was a devotee was driving to the Prabhupāda from Rath Yātrā and this devotee told me that Prabhupāda turned to him and there were Tears in his eyes. And he said, did you see how beautiful Lord Caitanya looked? Did you see how Nithyananda was dancing amongst the devotees? Wasn’t it beautiful? Wasn’t it beautiful to see? Of course, the other devotee did not have that same vision. But he said, yes, Bhu pam Lord Chaitanya. And when those devotees who are distributing Lord Chaitanya’s mercy, they become in samadhi, they become entranced for spreading Lord Chaitanya’s movement. So when they manifest different emotional symptoms for spreading Kṛṣṇa consciousness, this is not material. This is a spiritual manifestation. One has to become more and more purified. And as he becomes more purified, then all of his emotions will still be there.
But they will be manifest in the spiritual platform. We have trouble when we’re preaching india that all the people, they think that the devotee there, they have idea that devotee means one who is very peaceful, who puts on a perfect tea lock and never agītāted. And always just peaceful personified. So we have to preach how all the residents in Vrindavan, just like Yaśodā, how she was always just completely practically hazmat thinking about Kṛṣṇa, when he will eat, whether he will be eating, destroyed by any demon. This danger that all the time completely absorbed in a devotional service. Just, just complete enthusiasm of different type of anxiety. And when seeing Kṛṣṇa pleasure and all these different emotions, it’s not at all. You see, this idea of just calm and peace. It’s not that at all. The difference is that is completely unending.
That is a continuous rasa or relationship which is going on with Kṛṣṇa without any end or break. You see, in material life, there’s people. He wants to win the Olympics. He’s big running this and that. Then he wins and he and hooray. And I am the winner. But then of course, after that, then everything is again, he gets in a slump. So this type of material enthusiasm, this is just for some time. And then of course, one again becomes frustrated. But the devotional, that enthusiasm that is much, ultimately that becomes much more intense. But that becomes unbroken. And that simply day by day becomes more and more condensed and more concentrated. Just like if, you know, recently there’s been a lot of earthquakes. For God’s love is finished. Air faith. And sometimes the earthquake occurs in the middle of the ocean.
When an earthquake occurs in the ocean, then it creates a wave. That wave in the middle of the ocean is 6 inches high, appearing from the top of the ocean. What happens, say the whole Ocean is one mile deep. That whole ocean water gets a shock and that shock just jerks it. But one only sees a shot six or one foot wave. And that’s just actually the whole ocean itself. There’s like a movement when the water is moving. But actually the visible arterial ship is only one foot way. This is known as tidal wave. Like that the devotee, you see his being right, not only the physical senses, but his mind, his intelligence, his soul, his whole spiritual existence is absorbed in satisfying the transcendental desires of Guru Gaurāṅga and Kṛṣṇa. So usually this is not visible. One cannot see actually the depth.
He can only see a little bit. He cannot see the actual depth of person’s devotion. But Kṛṣṇa creates such a. Such a circumstance sometimes that the actual force of that and the depth of that devotion is manifest. So just like that, the ocean in the center, there’s that tidal wave. But it doesn’t look big. But when it comes towards the shore of any island or any land mass, then of course one can see what is the result. The flute was there, they are inclined. So that of course in the ocean here is so deep. But when the ocean shore comes up, then that whole water comes up and huge tidal wave, 600ft goes and completely floods the whole land. So like that when a big festival or when some big danger or when something you see, somehow Kṛṣṇa creates such a circumstance.
And all you see so much of the unlimited ecstasy which all the devotees are feeling and the deep dedication which that comes out to the different type of preaching, it becomes manifest. And like a tidal wave, the people are submerged in the ocean of nectar of Lord Chaitanya. Thank you. So we have to feed, you see to the devotees india that this is the real mood of devotion. Of course, in the West I find that naturally the devotees are very energetic. So therefore their energies are so well used by engaging everything in KA’s service. There’s nothing in Kṛṣṇa’s preaching, there’s nothing better than that. Of course, one has to concentrate that devotion deeper and refine it to the most concentrated and nectarine stick. We are discussing in Frank Clock the how india how we refine the sugar cane.
And this gives an idea how one has to concentrate his devotion. You probably all seen sugar cane plants.
(Side B of the Cassette)
We were thinking, oh, my goodness, give up our nice blue American passports and we have to stay here and we can’t eat our sour cream and whipped cream and pizza pies and oh, no, how terrible. And we have to surrender. Oh, no, we have to surrender. And in this way, only Daivataka Maharaj has ever done what Prabhupāda wanted us to do. And he perfectly speaks Bengali just like a vengu.
We are Bengali better.
And he is making very nice project in Māyāpur. Very important. So this actual surrender to the desires of Śrīla Prabhupāda is very important. This is the first requirement for becoming a great devotee. And then from surrender to Śrīla Prabhupāda, one will actually be able to surrender to the lotus instructions of Chaitanya, Mahāprabhu, Nurdity, Prabhu, Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa. So this we should all take a great lesson that our spiritual master may ask us to do something which we will think we cannot do. Now, do you think spiritual master is so foolish that he will ask you to do something you cannot do? Actually, he’s not so foolish. He would not be your spiritual master.
If he was so foolish.
But he will ask you to do what you can do, and when you do it, you will please him very much. But why do we sometimes think I cannot do it? For the same reason were thinking we cannot stay india. The tongue is saying, you cannot do it, and the other senses are saying, you cannot do it. And the mind is just a big receptacle for all of these senses going in. And therefore the mind starts echoing like a big cheerleading section. All the cheerleaders, you know, at the. The football games, you know, they all.
Go, ra, ra.
So the mind is going, you can’t do it. Don’t do it, don’t do it.
Two snish, two snish. Tu snish.
So in this way, when one, he just smashes this big cheerleading section to pieces simply by devotion, and he simply goes on steadfastly performing his devotional service, then he becomes very glorified. Now, don’t think that I am simply saying Tabata Mahesh is very great because he stayed india for nine years. Of course, if you have ever stayed india for one year, you will think that is very great.
As a reforant.
But actually, I think that his very great qualification is how wonderfully he takes up every order of Śrīla Prabhupāda very seriously. Now, for us to go out and distribute books actually is not very difficult. Of course we have to get a few lumps on the head from the demons now and then, but that’s not so bad. At least we can go on with a lumpy head and maybe the police throw us in jail for a few days. But that is okay because then we have to become humble. In India they don’t have any money and for them to distribute books means they go into big debt. Just imagine when you have to pay get less money from the people than it costs you to print a book. But still they are printing so many books. Still they are distributing so many books.
I remember in 1976 when I was Prabhupāda’s secretary, Prabhupāda told myself and Śrīlahansa Dudamaraj, he says, now you take all of these temples and you throw out all of the devotees and you let them live in tents on the field outside. And then you print, you empty all the bank accounts and you print millions of books and you just pack the temples full of books.
So yes, we have leben on the le Bangkonto’s house on Drogbuschen on temple auf.
And when all of the temples are packed up with books and the devotees are living in tents, you tell them when the books are all distributed you can live in the temple.
And when I live the temple occupants in Medbusha until God dividend himself when alone.
We are also doing that in Mishlos now anyway, so we have to take up this very good example. Just like Shivajay Patak Maharaj is printing hundreds of thousands of books and distributing them, we have to do this also. And we actually have to listen very carefully to what he says and take good instruction. Because it says in the Saru Sangha Sarva Shastri koh I lavamatra sara Sangha Sarva sirihoi. Just take association from a saintly personality. Just take association from the saintly personalities that is stated in all the shastras. And even if you get one moment of association, then you can become perfect. Now sometimes we are careless in taking association of great devotees and we let the mind degrade us. And sometimes we even fall asleep. And when we ask for questions, everybody just sits there and looks at the floor.
But were talking about boiling these sugar canes. Now to boil the sugarcane juice you have to have some fire. Now that fire that comes from your desire. Now when you have got a good desire, then you can start boiling that sugar cane juice. You can start to boil and fire up your devotion and concentrate it more and more into that sweet sugar candle. But what is that force which causes us to keep on trying to become more and more perfect? We have to develop that more and more. That force is simply our pure desire.
Undistic is.
Now sometimes people say, how can I get that desire? And I often answer, well, you can do it by intelligence and you can do it by knowledge, and you can do it by reading the books, this and that. But the actual way you can do it is to associate with great personalities who already have that desire. And when you associate with somebody who has the desire, then you automatically get the desire. And therefore, when you find somebody who has that desire, you shouldn’t even think twice. You should immediately run to associate with that person. It is very important that we take advantage of such great souls. We should not let this opportunity float by. In fact, we should reach out and search after such associates. And in this way we will also develop such desire to please our spiritual master.
It is not easy to surrender to Kṛṣṇa. Sometimes devotees would say in a very lamenting way, I cannot surrender to Kṛṣṇa. What is wrong? He said, you said this process was easy because it’s a fact. Prabhupāda always says bhakti Yoga is very easy process. And who can doubt it? After all, to chant Hare Kṛṣṇa, eat prashadam and see the deity and hear the class is not very difficult. But Prabhupāda, actually he was crying and he said, but I never said surrendering to Kṛṣṇa was easy. Do you think surrendering to Kṛṣṇa is easy? Sometimes when devotee is weak, his brain is not strong. He has a little bit of trouble. And then he says, this process does not work. Let me go away and become a dog. Whoever said becoming fully surrendered to Kṛṣṇa was easy, it is very difficult. We have a great disease.
We are incredibly sick. This is because this disease has been growing and growing for millions and millions of births. And finally we have come to a doctor and said, help me, I am sick. And then we start to take the.
Medicine and we take a little, little, and we get a little better. I am Bisian Bessa.
Well, we don’t realize we have big disease. And a big disease is manifesting as brain rot. And this brain is thinking of all kinds of nonsense. And sometimes it makes the body do all kinds of nonsense. But one must be very strong to always be taking association from saintly personalities so that he will get the strength to smash this disease. As soon as one is thinking, let me Go away from the group of devotees immediately. Māyā says aha, someone stray. And then gobbled up by Māyā. Gobbled, chewed, spit out. But as long as one remains together in the association of devotees, Māyā cannot come. Now, amongst the association of the total group of devotees, there are some devotees who have more desire to please Śrīla Prabhupāda. And those devotees you should search out now.
Sometimes devotees don’t know who’s got a desire to please Śrīla Prabhupāda. And because they don’t have the intelligence to actually see, they just walk around and look and they may hear somebody who says, I really want to please my spiritual master. I really want to please my spiritual master. And then we may think, aha, listen to what he’s saying. Oh, that is very good, very sincere. Let me associate. But when it is coming time to do something to please spiritual master, somehow or another he cannot do, then one devotee may be going about his service very humbly, very simply, but with great love and devotion every single day. Not interested in fame, not interested in profit, not interested in distinction, interested in nothing but pleasing his spiritual master. He won’t be jumping up and down in front of you and saying, here I am.
Yeah.
So such a person will be so busy serving his spiritual master, he will have no time to get you to glorify him. So what should you look for? You are looking for a greater should you look for how nice he has the big eye on the T shirt hat? Why should you look to see the depth of how much he is pleasing or how he is pleasing his spiritual?
What have he assigned spiritual meisters?
And how will you develop that ability to see like that? It will come by very intense. Praying to Kṛṣṇa and hearing the Hare.
Kṛṣṇa mantras.
Seriously wants to become fully surrendered to his spiritual master. He will come into association with others who are similarly surrendered. Such devotees will get great benefits. And those who don’t have the great desire and don’t pray to Kṛṣṇa and don’t try to hear the Hare Kṛṣṇa Mantra, they will find association with similar other babblers and they will make jokes all day and they will do nothing to serve Kṛṣṇa. So we have to be very careful to use our time and our energies nicely. And we should very much utilize association of very inspiring devotees. For example, one example is just see how the Sankirtan has become so powerful in the weeks since everybody was in Germany and sangirtaning together. And how all these sincere devotees, when they came together, inspired each other so much that the Sankirtan doubled In one week.
And this is because actually there is a surrendering going on. Because all you devotees are actually learning how to surrender. Now there is some momentum. Now keep up the moment and surrender more and more. And try more and more to give up all these material attachments and desires. If you can try and become number one on these ankhytant.
Listen.
Of course you may have a hard time doing it, but you can try. Now what will be your motivation? You will think my spiritual master will be very pleased when I distribute a lot of books. Now this other devotee, he is distributing a lot of books and pleasing his spirits from them. And if I keep my eyes on him example and I try to surpass his example, then I know for sure I will please my spiritual man. And then when you do it in this way, you will actually please your spiritual.
Meister Zufrin.
And as soon as you think I want to be number one so I can be on top of everybody else and immediately you go to hell. Then your mentality is no better than a karmic. So what is the principle of surrender? The qualities of surrender which are most important. Important.
To take the instruction of the spiritual Mass in one’s heart and to pray.
To the spiritual Mass.
And then these instructions become manifested.
You’re devising this spiritual masters as health. To name spiritual maesters.
Tell me in two words or three words with and in between? Two words which sum it up very clearly. What did he say? What did he say?
Love and devotion.
Love and devotion. Are you sure? What do you think? What do you think about love and devotion? Is that a good answer?
Is Dasani Gupta Anvot.
Who thinks that love and devotion is the correct answer? Raise your hand. So, Hoja. Thanks. Baatje thinks. Ritter thinks. Our new Baptist thinks. Oh look, Baptists are chained up good. And the rest of you are fools. You think there is anything but love and devotion? What else can there be for advancement in devotional service?
Good and fortunate.
So what are we going to do next week? What are we going to do next?
Practice love and devotion.
And how.
So take that what you said in our heart.
Where? In the back room. Can we take it into the back room?
Yes.
Avti Stras is Old Veda’s name.
When we go on the street, we shouldn’t just forget all these things, but we should increase with love and devotion. Do you think it’s possible to increase? How V? By increasing our love?
Yes.
See?
Who knows the answers? Why? Why is it that he knows the answers? And why is it that he’s number one because he’s already practicing. That’s right. So you do it too and beat him. So what will you do next week? What will you do next year?
Just love and devotion. Try to please you. That I can do Some nice distribution.
That’s all.
I mean the main point is to become. To defeat Bhagavān’s stone.
Yes. We cannot tolerate that Bhagavān is pleasing Śrīla Prabhupāda more than we are. We cannot tolerate this. We cannot tolerate this. You understand? What are you going to do about it?
Vest there, yet do it.
His love and devotion Want to try to defeat him.
Yes.
And then what will you do after you try? No one dares say it. Never leave the position when you try and do it. What will you do? This is music to my ears.
That’s music to my ear.
Yes, Mauram. Yes, Jaigu. Dave. Yes, Anantha. Yes. Yes, miss Papa. Yes. Yes. Yes.
Yes.
We want to make big competition. Now he is sitting in his palaces.
And he’s surrounded by hundreds of his servitude in Zenadina.
And everybody is thinking there. Yes, we are number one. But actually now they are looking over their shoulders and they see.
Oh.
