The following is the class given by His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami on February 23rd 1999 in Śrī Dham Maypur in India. The class begins with a reading from Śrīmad Bhagvatam 6th Canto 6th Chapter and 44th verse.

Jayapatākā Swami Maharaj: This is spoken by Supreme personality of God

head to Daksha prajāpati 3 rd, ah, 6th canto 6th chapter 44th verse Śrīmad Bhagvatam the hasmsa ghuya prayer, purport by Śrīla Prabhupāda. (Note: It is from SB: 6.4.44)

Purport:

After every dissolution of the material cosmos, all the living entities take shelter

in the body of Kāraṇodakaśāyī Viṣṇu, and when creation takes place again, they come

forth from His body in their various species to resume their activities. Why does the

creation take place in such a way that the living entities are put into conditioned life to

suffer the threefold miseries imposed upon them by the material nature? Here the Lord

says to Dakṣa, “You desire to benefit all living entities, and that is also My desire.” The

living entities who come in contact with the material world are meant to be corrected. All

the living entities within this material world have revolted against the service of the Lord,

and therefore, they remain within this material world as ever conditioned, nitya-

baddha, taking birth again and again. There is a chance, of course, of their being liberated, but nevertheless the conditioned souls, not taking advantage of this opportunity, continue

in a life of sense enjoyment, and thus they are punished by birth and death again and

again. This is the law of nature. As the Lord says in Bhagavad-gītā (7.14):

daivī hy eṣā guṇa-mayī
mama māyā duratyayā
mām eva ye prapadyante
māyām etāṁ taranti te

“This divine energy of Mine, consisting of the three modes of material nature, is difficult

to overcome. But those who have surrendered unto Me can easily cross beyond it.”

Elsewhere in Bhagavad-gītā (15.7) the Lord says:

mamaivāṁśo jīva-loke
jīva-bhūtaḥ sanātanaḥ
manaḥ ṣaṣṭhānīndriyāṇi
prakṛti-sthāni karṣati

“The living entities in this conditioned world are My eternal, fragmental parts. Due to

conditioned life, they are struggling very hard with the six senses, which include the

mind.” The living entity’s struggle for existence within the material world is due to his

rebellious nature. Unless a living entity surrenders to Kṛṣṇa, he must continue this life of

struggle. The Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is not a fad. It is a bona fide movement intended to promote the welfare of all conditioned souls by trying to elevate everyone to the platform of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. If one does not come to this platform, he must continue in material existence perpetually, sometimes in the upper planets and sometimes in the lower planets. As confirmed in Caitanya-caritāmṛta (Madhya 20.118),

kabhu svarge
uṭhāya, kabhu narake ḍubāya:

the conditioned soul sometimes descends into nescience

and sometimes gets some relief by being relatively freed from it. This is the life of the

conditioned soul.

Prajāpati Dakṣa is trying to benefit the conditioned souls by begetting them to give them a life with a chance for liberation. Liberation means surrender to Kṛṣṇa. If one begets

children with the purpose of training them to surrender to Kṛṣṇa, fatherhood is very

good. Similarly, when the spiritual master trains the conditioned souls to become Kṛṣṇa

conscious, his position is successful. If one gives the conditioned souls a chance to become Kṛṣṇa conscious, all his activities are approved by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is extremely pleased, as stated here (prīto ’haṁ). Following the examples of the previous ācāryas, all the members of the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement should try to benefit the conditioned souls by inducing them to become Kṛṣṇa conscious and giving them all facilities to do so. Such activities constitute real welfare work. By such activities, a preacher or anyone who endeavors to spread Kṛṣṇa consciousness is recognized by the Supreme Personality of Godhead. As the Lord Himself confirms in Bhagavad-gītā (18.68 - 69):

ya idaṁ paramaṁ guhyaṁ
mad-bhakteṣv abhidhāsyati
bhaktiṁ mayi parāṁ kṛtvā
mām evaiṣyaty asaṁśayaḥ
na ca tasmān manuṣyeṣu
kaścin me priya-kṛttamaḥ
bhavitā na ca me tasmād
anyaḥ priyataro bhuvi

“For one who explains the supreme secret to the devotees, devotional service is

guaranteed, and at the end he will come back to Me. There is no servant in this world

more dear to Me than he, nor will there ever be one more dear.”

Jayapatākā Swami Maharaj: Thus, end the Bhaktivedanta Swami translation, purport to text 44, Chapter 4, Canto 6, Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, Haṁsa guya prayers.

Long purport. [not clear] to this purport, this verse is very important, giving a long

purport. He explains here the situation of the conditioned soul, how he also explains here

the purpose of the Krsna Conscious movement and he also explains about how to be

happy, the living entities [not clear].

Lord Nityānanda, He thought even though [not clear] He came to Navadwip Dham, that

“I want to give pure unadulterated unlimited happiness to all the living entities. I am

inviting everyone please take this happiness. How many here want to be happy?

Gauranaga! Nityānanda!! You see! But there are different kinds of happiness. That is

the happiness of sense enjoyment. [not clear] Prabhupad considered to be a kind of

punishment. By sense enjoyment, they are just put again and again into the repetition of

birth and death.

So, Lord Nityānanda is advising everyone to get unadulterated pure happiness, free from karma, free from jñāna, free from speculative knowledgeand fruitive activities. Spiritual happiness which is eternal which never ends. [not clear 10:40] compare the value of some temporary happiness which is not complete or unlimited pure spiritual happiness which is fully satisfying to body, mind and the most important of all is the self. So that this is what Lord

Nityānanda is offering.

So, all of you come here to Māyāpur dham becuase it was Prabhupad’s desire. Just

like Daksha, he arranged the sacrifice, he arranged the yajña in order to make people of the universe happy in order to give them a chance to get liberation.

Similarly, Śrīla Prabhupad who is our pre-eminent śikṣā guru, foundation of diksha guru in ISKCON our founder acharya so for his initiated disciples he is also their diksha guru. He wanted the welfare of all the devotees in ISKCON.

So, he arranged this festival, the Māyāpur festival in order to give everyone the unlimited mercy in ah, before there was Māyāpur, we started here in 1970, in 1969 in Gaura Pūrṇimā in Hawaii Prabhupad was talking about Māyāpur.

He said this today is a very important day Lord Caitanya birth ceremony, atleast in India especially in Navadwip there is a very very great ceremony today. Thousands and millions of people are gathering to observe this important ceremony. So, ceremony apart from ceremony or function let us try to understand the

philosophy of Lord Caitanya.

When Prabhupad went on to speak the philosophy that there is different kinds of happiness, the happiness, material happiness means sense gratification and then Prabhupad explained there is Sukham ātyantikaṁ. Ātyantikaṁ means Super! Super Happiness!! (laughs).

How many would like super happiness? (audience Hari bol !) Hari bol ! (unclear 13:33) already everybody is overdosed with ordinary happiness may be in some place they want more. Why mess around?

We want Prabhupad is giving here Sukham Ātyantikaṁ meaning Super Happiness.

So, Kṛṣṇa says

Sukham Ātyantikaṁ, the super most happiness can be achieved by not by these senses but Atīndriya.

Atīndriya means transcendental senses. Just like at the present moment our senses are gross material senses. So, we want to awaken our transcendental senses. So, Prabhupad brought everyone here so that they could have Sukham Ātyantikaṁ Super Happiness. And, if we don’t get a taste for super happiness then we might think that the ordinary gross material happiness is good enough and get trapped by Māyā to take birth again and again.

So, therefore just like Daksha Prajāpati he organized a sacrifice and leading people

to liberation. Well, in the time of Daksha of course he’s still there so long lived. He’s in a higher planet but

people are living so long that they can take a very gradual process. But we are in kali yuga we don’t even know whether we are able to live hundred years that’s the normal maximum. We see here, we met on a parikrama, Nainanda das bābājī where 92 or 93 years old. And, there is a one, there is a Bhakthi ah, Pramoda purī Maharaj is over 100 years old. But other than that, we don’t see many people.

I mean in our, once when people are may be 80 may be 70 may be any yea...any age we don’t know How long are you going to be here. We have a short period of time. So, in this time we want to get super happiness.

We don’t want to just take the gradual process. But anyway, yagnya is needed. So Prabhupad has given us this yagnya. Previous acharyas have given us yagnya. Sankirtan, spreading the glories of Lord Caitanya.

The yagnya of coming to Māyāpur & participating in this festival. This festival is a yagnya. The Navadwip dham parikrama is a yagnya. And, by participating in this yagnya we can get super happiness.

You see, in case there is any doubt, you see, what Lord Nityānanda said?

He says, anyone who stays in Navadwip dham is very fortunate because by staying here you get attraction for Kṛṣṇa. We know thats the first

qualification to get super happiness. If anybody happens to go to Navadwip dham, he gets freed from all offenses. We know that without getting freed from offenses, we won’t get love of Kṛṣṇa.

So, all the benefit you get by travalling to all the holy places you get just by remembering Navadwip dham. So, everyone in the world when you want to get the benefit of visiting holy places, what should you remember?

Devotees: Navadwip dham Ki (Devotees: Jai). And, the scriptures says whoever sees Navwdwip dham to get ecstatic love of Kṛṣṇa, birth after birth. Hariii bol!

Even somebody comes for a material (not clear) or a benefit, he won’t have to take another birth. And one who walks around Navadwip gets more than a fruit of millions of Aswamedha yagnyas at every step. Whoever stays here, Navadwip and chant mantras obtains the sound of Caitanya as his mantra can easily gets feed from Māyā. What yogis get by doing intensive austerities, penance and meditation in any other holy place for 10 years, you get by staying in Navadwip dham for 3 days.

(Devotees: Hariiii bol)

In other holy places, by staying for a long time you can get liberation. In the Brahman. Here you get just by bathing once in the Ganges. All kinds of liberations Sālokya, Sārūpya, Sashti, Sāmīpya,nīyamānā .Anybody wants it? (laughs.) can be easily attained in Navadwip dham. Simply by following at the feet of pure

devotees at Navadwip bukthi & mukthi remain as your obedient servant.

Once [not clear] we bow down in the morning, we say "

vāñchā-kalpatarubhyaś ca kṛpā-sindhubhya eva ca
patitānāḿ pāvanebhyo vaiṣṇavebhyo namo namaḥ

You only have mukthi and bukthi be your servants, you simply bow down

to the Vaiṣṇava s at Navadwip dham.

But the devotees, they don’t care for mukti, bukt i, they keep them

away, get out, don’t bother me. I don’t want your service. The fruits you get for 100 years of staying in seven thirthas, you can get by staying in one night in Navadwip dham.so therefore this is considered the top most dham. If you take shelter of Māyāpur dham, you can easily cross over kali-yuga. Tārakā the name of Rāma which give liberation and Pāraka the name Kṛṣṇa which gives prema always serving the residents of holy dham here.

We see in Goloka Vṛndāvan in Kṛṣṇa Loka, there are two rasas there is the madurya rasa and there is the audharya rasa. Mādhurya rasa means sweetness and audhorya rasa means munificence or mercy, within mādhurya, audhorya is present fully within audhorya, mādhurya is present fully.

Rādhārāṇī is the personification of mādhurya, she is also the personification of mercy.

So, Vṛndāvan and Navadweep are non- different only difference is that one rasa appears more prominent in one place, in Vṛndāvan the rasa of mādhurya is prominent but within mādhurya, audhorya is there and within the Navadwip the rasa

of audhorya is here munificence mercy but within that mādhurya is there.

So, the only difference is influence of rasa but it is actually non different, both are spiritually the same except for the difference of rasa, but in Navadwip because the rasa is mercy, we can get What? Mercy! we need lot of mercy, we can get easily perfected here and realise our spiritual nature, realize our eternal relationship with Kṛṣṇa in Navadwip dham so while you are here somehow, we have to speak on the 1st Bhagvatam class in the festival, official festival so I thought I should get everybody focused, so while you are here you want to get a lot of mercy, you heard some of the ways to get mercy lying down in the holy dham is just like paying prāṇāṁs, so when you go to sleep at night don’t forget to lie down, [laughs] its means paying your prāṇāṁs and by serving you get the mercy.

Now, Prabhupāda he brought us here because he wanted

everyone to get Sukaham Ajaktikam he wanted us to get super happiness he wanted everybody to get super mercy, Kripa Ajaktikam.

Sometimes in some places in the world people are not coming, here we

can see so many people coming, like Prabhupāda said Kṛṣṇa Consciousness is not a [Not Clear - 00:23:14], this is actually the spiritual process for the age, it started here people still practicing it they believe in it but know it is our duty we are coming from all over the world, it’s our duty to take this inspiration and give it to the rest of the world, to get our fire ignited and then go just like Hanumān set the whole Laṅkā on fire, set the whole world on fire with Kṛṣṇa prema

“Nitāi Gaura Sitanandi Premanandi”

Devotees: Hari Hari Bol!!

So, Prabhupāda also said we should be here we should really go deep in understanding

what is Lord Caitanya’s teachings? and Parbhupada here in Navadwip Māyāpur gave in the festival a little synopsis.

So, Lord Caitanya’s teachings the sum and substance of his teaching is to understand that we are the eternal servants of God, and not so difficult we are the eternal servant of God.

And, Prabhupāda continues and if we immediately engage our energy to satisfy Kṛṣṇa then immediately we are transferred to the spiritual platform and if we stick to that activities of the spiritual platform then as assured (side: “don’t give the tulsi please”) then it is assured by Lord Kṛṣṇa (side: “maybe not getting. it’s the whip”) it assured by Lord Kṛṣṇa (side: “somebody should fan Prabhupāda two people here one by one”) then it is assured by Lord Kṛṣṇa that after leaving this body we go back to Kṛṣṇa, Vṛndāvana, go back to Godhead, back to home, that is where peacefully, we turn out to

peaceful life. We should endeavor for that.

I remember one time; we go out with Śrīla Prabhupad from Calcutta. He is coming to Māyāpur. He started the main door (not clear) on the way, had his picnic breakfast and then he went rest of the way and came to Māyāpur and original temple is where Lord

Caitanya exhibited. People have come here before, it’s like a ladder and all. You get confused. The original temple was where Caitanya exhibited from which the access is moved over here, was over there.

So, after the reception, and everything, then Prabhupad went upstairs he sat on his seat and well, I have told this few times, took his glass of water, in the golden goblet, he drank the water like he used to, that is without touching, (making a sort of sound) hm.. ahaa this way he was sighing sighing..

“Māyāpur, living and dying in Māyāpur, it’s all the same”. He said, living and dying, we never think living and dying, it’s all the same. Dying is not something we look forward to (Devotees laughing).

Some of them, living and dying in Māyāpur is the same. You live in Māyāpur, you are in the spiritual world. Is it the spiritual world?

So, I got to travelling all over the world, Prabhupad finding it out he came back to

Māyāpur he was in Spiritual Worlds. Because he carried his spiritual world with him where ever he went. And here he is like, Relax, Now I am back home. And (where is not clear….) then he said you live in Māyāpur in the spiritual world, when you leave your body here, when you are die, you go back to the spiritual world.

Have you heard that in Godruma Dwip, at Harihar Skethra, whenever a devotee is ah,

leaving their body, in that area Lord Shiva, he comes adjusts the time you are leaving the body so you don’t leave in Māyā.

What does he say? (Devotees: Gau…............raṅga) then you leave your body and

right back to Goloka Vṛndāvan.

So, one time, Śrīla Prabhupad, he was, his pastimes here, it was so endeavoring. Very first festivals, we didn’t have all these buildings. In fact, we only had the grass hot.

That was our building. (laughs) there was ah, the one grass hut. I think there was a cement go-down, just was under construction. And this building was just starting. So, everyone was staying in tents, just like we stayed under parikrama. Everyone was staying in tents. And everybody was getting sick at that time because maybe we weren’t such good cooks. I don’t know, may be [not clear]. Lot of devotees got sick.

And then Śrīla Prabhupad, he was telling that here we are going to build a spiritual city, we are going to build this 300-foot height temple, and we are going to do so many things. Anyway, I was just, It’s grass hut. This is like a grass hut and he is telling everyone that we are going to do all these things here, looking around.

You know, there were only two rikshas in Māyāpur then. (laughs.). We have got progressed now. There are so many rikshas. (laughs.). And there was no tea stall. (Laughs.) No tea stalls, no rikshas. Uhh, there was just this grass hut and open fields, and ah, little out house without running

water. We had to bring the bucket with a, you know to pump the water for Prabhupad and put it there.

And Prabhupad was saying “I am living in this grass hut. And this grass hut is in the mode of goodness, Satvik”. This is an art. They can just chant here by the side of Ganges, Hare Kṛṣṇa. We can get lot of Kṛṣṇa and go back to Godhead. But, if I do this, then what about everybody else? Then everybody else is going to come to see his grass hut. So therefore, we are building the temple….

we are building the guest house out of concrete and steel and stones and all these things and… that is the mode of rājā, passion, but for preaching we have to do that.

So Prabhupāda was teaching us that for our own needs even living in a grass hut its good enough, but in order to facilitate everyone to come to stay in Māyāpur, to visit Māyāpur you need to build a big temple; you need to build a…have a nice facility to everyone. Actually, when we constructed this first long building so that everybody could stay, we thought “Wow! You know there is two hundred rooms in that building it’s like so many rooms were set for (not clear).

Prabhupāda said “Now immediately build another one” and I was thinking ok! that’s two others anyway “no, no” we have other priorities…what we are going to do? what a mistake if we have two long buildings two would be enough now.

But it wouldn’t help Prabhupāda was immediately he could see that there are going to be so many devotees.

So, in this way Śrīla Prabhupāda he wanted this world congress where devotees all come together from around the world. We meet each other we see each other we chant together we bow down to the other Vaiṣṇava s to get this blessing of Lord Caitanya by bowing down to the devotees. I really feel anxious to get up the seat and bow down to all of you.

This, this is why Prabhupāda brought us here that everybody could get a big boost in their Kṛṣṇa consciousness. And see practically how Kṛṣṇa consciousness is practiced. He said many times that we have to maintain a standard in Māyāpur this is our world spiritual head quarter.

In those days people were not coming here Prabhupāda was upstairs and they have the vice governor of Pondicherry come to the other temple some

other temple and Prabhupāda… so many people were going there and Prabhupāda was wondering why they are not coming here yet. He said you have to arrange that they come here you have to become very good host and you have to make people happy. I think still we have not learned how to host the devotees nicely.

Like this Prabhupāda wanted us to bring people here. So now at least many devotees are coming and millions of people visit Māyāpur in the year and an average three to six thousand people come here every day in the season. And during festival there will be between ten thousand to twenty-five thousand even on the Gaur Pūrṇimā day there may be over hundred thousand people coming here.

Some time there is a hundred and fifty thousand. Some time you will not have to...some time you will have to learn all back routes. You will not be able to go on the main routes you have to learn how to get around the people.

In the future you have many secret paths for devotees. ISKCON devotees know together how to help. We already perceive that we have five hundred thousand people coming here on the big festival days in the future. For the five hundred, anniversary of Lord Caitanya of one-weeks’ time we had 1.2 million people come to here 12,00,000. It took me ah, by car to get from the birth place of Lord Caitanya one way one and half hour that’s so many people there were.

So, this is what Prabhupāda wanted that we should make Māyāpur very famous so people will come here so they all get the blessings and he wanted the devotees to come here so they associate they get the blessings and the devotees feel that this is my home. They go from here also to Vṛndāvan, experience surrender to Kṛṣṇa there.

Go to Jagannath Purī go to holy places for preaching also. This is already fully

fulfil all our needs but to preach and to understand what is our culture, what is our tradition? And then to spread that culture and spread that tradition all over the world we wanted all the devotees we want all of you to become super happy.

To somehow through this festival we are not able to happy, become super happy at least to get test, some test of ecstatic Kṛṣṇa devotion, ecstatic Kṛṣṇa prem ecstatic love of

Kṛṣṇa, then somehow, we didn’t do our job. Just before festival we have appearance day Śrīla Bhaktisidhhant Saraswati Thakur and then he was giving a lecture and at one point really stuck in my mind [not clear] this conclusion shares with you.

When he was lecturing on his vyasapuja, he was saying, actually that ah, the real point is the guru should never think that he is guru, he should always be thinking of himself as a servant, and he should be thinking how his duty is to make all his disciple’s gurus. They were in the business of making gurus and really that is what this Māyāpur festival is all about. The features are training the preachers, when we learnt from Prabhupāda in this verse, that is the way how to be dearest to Kṛṣṇa, very very dearest, 18th chapter 68,69 for one who explains the supreme secret to the devotes, devotional service is

guaranteed and at the end he will come back to me. There is no servant in this world more dearer to me than he nor there will be anyone more dear, all the preaching and all the training seminars everything going on here is actually to train everyone who is participating to be teachers, to be preachers, to be gurus and to go and train devotees, aspiring devotees all over the world. in this secret science of Kṛṣṇa Consciousness and in this way becoming the dear most devotees of Kṛṣṇa.

Thank you very much.

Hare Kṛṣṇa.

What time it is, maybe one question or two questions short. Yes

Devotee: “Śrīla Acharya pada I wish to ask a question?”

Jayapatākā Swami Maharaj: Say Jayapatākā Swami please.

Devotee: “Jayapatākā Swami, I wish to ask a question for the benefit of all the devotees. Śrīla Prabhupāda mentions that one who surrenders to Kṛṣṇa …. [break]

Jayapatākā Swami Maharaj: Hare Kṛṣṇa! How to always stay in the service attitude? that is actually the real secret, how Kṛṣṇa Consciousness.

Srinavasa Ācārya explains to get jewel of Kṛṣṇa bhakti, Kṛṣṇa bhakti means, when we understand that I am the servant of Kṛṣṇa jīvere swarupa hua Kṛṣṇa nitya das. I am Kṛṣṇa’s eternal servant and we start rendering devotional service as the servant

of Kṛṣṇa and then we start to experience sukhm ajayktakam, super happiness, but what happens is, Māyā by doing that we declare, Prabhupāda in his many initiations ceremony he would say that you are declaring war against Māyā and Māyā, her job is to try to by hook or by crook to make you think, that you are the enjoyer. That you are not the eternal servant of Kṛṣṇa, you are the eternal enjoyer of the senses and that is why we [not clear]. to receive the Bhāgavatam, Bhagvata nitya sevayā, to get rid of this

contamination that remind us of because we are so forgetful that we need to remind ourselves every day, chanting our japa rounds every day, hearing the Bhāgavatam every day, coming every year to Māyāpur to get a super dose of super happiness, so that super service, super association.

So, we can be super protected against Māyā. We have to be careful. Srinavasa Acharya said you have to be always on the guard, Māyā can steal the jewel from you of the attitude of Kṛṣṇa sevā in so many ways.

Just like somebody coming with a club and when they hit you over, somebody coming and engaging you in Vaiṣṇava aparadh it is coming like a club “thak” immediately by Vaiṣṇava apradh you can lose your Kṛṣṇa bhakti or someone like a joker like some kind of pimp or something trying to sell some prostitution, come and let’s do some prajalpa, gossiping one thing leads to the next. It may happen to someone offering some sense gratification like a big tiger coming and eating you, you are going to be

happy and enjoy this oh yes maybe I can be happy, let me enjoy. In so many ways māyā, through subtle way, through gross way, through deviations too.

So, we have to be very much on the guard, that’s what giving people Kṛṣṇa’s mercy through Lord Caitanya’s mercy, not so difficult, to protecting them back not to lose it, is one of our primary task, because māyā is out there to trick, how to get us off the track.

We have to just remain always in yukta vairāgya, We have to, whenever we are in the material world we are going to enjoy sense happiness, we have to do it in Kṛṣṇa Consciousness way, eat Kṛṣṇa prasādam, if someone wants ah, sex life then be a house holder, if someone wants that type of association an intimate friendship ok ah, there are different house holder life this like that whenever, wherever we will be stronger to fight against māyā do that but do it as a fight against māyā to remain in a

devotional mood, Kṛṣṇa accepts which our devotion, we can be in whichever asram, whichever situation but we have to be very clear with Kṛṣṇa very sincere about. So that’s why we take association of Guru, from our Śikṣā gurus and our Diksha guru we take association of the Vaiṣṇava s, we take association from the Dham, from the holy name, worship the deities, we keep our selves filled with devotional services we don’t leave a crack.

Prabhupāda, one time said I gave the Māyāpur project so that the devotees will have so much to do especially the big big leaders will have so much to do build the

Māyāpur project they would have no time to fall into māyā.

Hare Kṛṣṇa ah, Thank you very much.

Hare Kṛṣṇa.
