The following is a lecture given by His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami Mahārāja on April 12, 2003 in Śrī Māyāpur, India. The lecture begins with a reading from Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.5.20.
And Lord Caitanya appeared to the king. The king became super ecstatic, jumped up, wanted to speak something. But He hit his obeisances and jumped up and just was overwhelmed. Then that form of the Lord disappeared. Then the king was really in separation. The Lord wasn’t coming. He was crying and crying. Then Lord Chania spoke to him. Isaiah King, you’re not fully ready to see me. But I give you a special blessing. And in the future you’re going to become my associate to take birth via my villa. And the name will be Buddhimanta Khan who organized the wedding for Lord Caitanya. Two weddings. So, the same example was given to that king. Brought together. Some of them were separated. What we should really do is try to realize Kṛṣṇa. That will link us up with Vishak eternally.
Someone may feel like this, happy to meet my relatives in a normal sense. You see as many airports, happy people meeting each other and people leaving and people crying. But all these attachments in this material world is not a permanent situation. We can somehow develop that kind of attachment for the devotees, develop that kind of attachment for Kṛṣṇa and our life will be perfect. Despite a normal attachment everyone is having. And somehow we can transfer that to Kṛṣṇa is the Lord. That same attachment will take us back to Kṛṣṇa. Bhairavadis don’t understand this because they don’t understand the transcendental nature of Kṛṣṇa. Māyā bodies think that his devotees are sentimental. They’re crying for Kṛṣṇa. This whole Māyā actually pranks for Kṛṣṇa. Transcendental. Thank the Kṛṣṇa devotees. Chancing. We thought here about Nanda Maharaj having a child. Almost hopeless situation.
Actually I read in some recent scientific journal that when people become older, it’s harder to conceive, harder to have children. The headline was. I forget the headline but it was something like Women don’t be fooled because they tell you that wait till you finish your career and then have a family. Because when you get older, you may not be able to have a family. You may not be able to conceive. You want to have a family. Better to start earlier. That was like the gist of the water. Then I gave so many scientific evidence to say the conception of 8 goes down to 10% over particular age. Over 40 or so. Very hard to conceive. So using that kind of situation example, Vasudev is asking on the mah so very great thing that you have a child. Oh no, you have a son. Congratulations.
But she knew the whole thing. Just checking everything out. Actually in a few days praying to the Bengalis on the 15th and according to the Bengali calendar. According to the Vaishnava calendar on the. I don’t want to say it. On the morning month calendar, the 16th is the beginning of the month of Baisha. Huh? 15Th is the Bengali calendar followed by 25. Different calendars you can use. Anyway the 15th is coming very soon. That day there’s a Darshan available of the Hansa Baham Giti in Madhyam Bheet only comes. The Giti comes out of the water once a year. So it will be available then. So we’re thinking to take whoever wants to go. Just take a darshan of the need. This is a chance and a lifetime whole year the deity remains underwater. That’s another story to tell about that. Whoever wants to go later.
Very ancient deity Śiva riding on the Swana or Brahma. That’s in the month of Vaisha, Vedic calendar. Vaishad is also considered a holy month like Dhamadar is considered. Most of the Lord heard the world about Dhamadar month. Our Lord Mishna said that it’s the dearest month to him. Some other places Vishnu says the first month of the year Vaishakra is also very dear to you. Everyone gets hundred times the benefit by performing devotional service and kindness activities in the month of Vaishak. In that month of Vaishak we have the Akwai Chitya which is the anniversary of the beginning of satyura. We have 21 days of Chandra. We have this. I think dropping water on the Śrīla comes somewhere. If I am not mistaken, not 100% sure about that. We have the Sheena Chaturdasi. Many different holy days are in that month.
There’s a history that brought us the same as there was a Brahman. He couldn’t have children. He was trying even in his old age but wasn’t able to have children. He was very frustrated. What’s the use of living? I don’t have children. His wife said, well I knew. Many. I don’t have any children, I don’t have any money. This means go out and get a job somewhere. Go out some foreign land, earn some money, bring back to you. The wife said, look, I don’t have any money, I don’t have any children and I don’t even have a husband. If you go over, you know foreign so better you stay here. I don’t mind living in poverty but at least I have a husband. And he was very adamant. How can I let my dear wife live like this?
And probably I should get some money for you then she said, look, if you want a child, you never know what kind of child you get. Despite kinds of children, one is a child because of bad karma. Because of some bad karma, you get a child that’s meant to cause some suffering. Sometimes you get a child because the enemy wants to be born and your family needs to cause you trouble. It’s called satu sadhana. And sometimes because of a debt, if you don’t pay off all your debts before you die, and when you take birth again, all the people that you owe money to, some might become your children. To get that pound of flesh from you, to get that money, they get that money back by cook or by cook, parents who spend so much money on their children.
But those children, they’re not existing, giving to the parents, they just want to take because they had that knowledge the previous life had to get from this person. The three kind of children are very negative. Only the fourth kind is called sukudra sukutri, very good child who that child cares for the parents in their old age, does shrat for them, does pious activities for them. Devoted child. The fifth kind of child is called udasin, detached. They’re neither against the family, they’re not for the family. They’re defense. Even like the four kumar. They were buddhasi, but they’re also devoted. So that was. They weren’t going to follow what Rāma said. I don’t know whether you call them wood scene or transcendental, but in the transcendental sense they were neutral.
So the whites are looking 4 out of 1 out of 5 chance to get a good child, even if you have one. So no harm if you don’t have children. Because you never know whether you get a child causing trouble. No, no, I want a child. He wasn’t listening. Then the wife thought, okay, Visishta Boni is nearby, go to see him. He can see the three cows, past, present and future. He can give you some advice how you can get what you want. Then I thought, okay, that’s a good idea. They went to see the sister Moni. Maybe they were living in Guwahati, because the system only has ashram and Guwahati. So then he asked the sister Mooney, I want to have children. I am very unfortunate. Why am I able to have children?
But sister Muni told them, I see you in your previous life. You were a sutra. But you started doing business with cow. And you were making a lot of money in the dairies. I don’t know how you made a lot of money in dairy Our dairy doesn’t make a lot of money. This dairy was making other ones. So you became very rich. You never spent any money on your wife or your children. Rather you buried all your money. Then when you died, they didn’t know where your money was buried. So they all suffered in poverty because of that sin of that fixed thing where you’re family, this life. You have no children and nobody. So that makes sense. I blew it. Last life. Then I don’t understand how is it I got born in a Brahmin family and over the sutra.
And how is it I got such a good wife? I mean, she’s really great. She’s very spiritual, very philosophical. Even much better than I am. So how did I get back? That was just a morning scary. You didn’t have any good karma your whole last life. But except one thing. Some Vaishala visited your house in the month of Aisha and told you so chant do something. I don’t want to call the Lord. He visited or will do something. So for three days we observed Vaishak month. We should. If people are not vegetarian, they should be vegetarian also. In Babad we should do some offer flowers to deities, dance before the deities, learn different, worship the Kṛṣṇa. This kind of things are there. So somehow this person for three days he did something auspicious.
Because of that three days, you were born of Ramana and he met up with Michael. Three days I did something good. The whole rest of your life was the best of nothing. Zero. So what can I do now? Well, now instead we just know this. A month of Aisha. We have seven days left. These last seven days. If you perform these activities, we add some devotional service to it. And all your problems will be solved. The red band for seven days with his wife. They performed devotional service in the month of Aisha. Got children, got money. Instead of paying the light, he went back to rabbit. There’s also how more can you ask for, right? Best of both worlds. People like the month of Vaishak. The Avatar is more for just devotional service. But Vaishak to materialize spiritual blessings.
So how that Ramana must have felt when he had a child so like that? So happy that a child son like indirectly he’s trying to find out. I know my boy is he’s not supposed to know. First baby, he knows about Balara. But son not supposed to know about Kṛṣṇa. He knows everything. Knows more than memoir. He wants to find out what’s happening. So. In this material world, we’re together sometimes and we’re separated. You never know what’s going to happen. So while we’re together, we can make a mesus of it. Associating, chanting, dancing, devotional services. Prophets had actually made the Kṛṣṇa conscious movement to facilitate the devotees to have loving exchanges amongst each other. Think of any many people feel, oh, this time we missed out on this one. Don’t feel always that loving exchange we have with everyone.
At least some devotees you should have that kind of relationship we have with everyone very fortunate. Giving a gift, receiving, gift belief, opening your face of Prasadam, receiving prasad, opening your heart, your mind, hearing the other person. Loving exchanges. So this kind of loving exchange is going on between Namra and Masur. I am sure Nandamura is not going to let us today leave without Satan. Ashara. They’re definitely opening their mind to each other. They’re giving a lot of. Actually this is a problem mine. And it’s time. Sometimes devotees they become. Maybe there’s a tinge of Mayoba that we think it’s Māyā if I am attached to other devotees or something. Are we just too distracted and personal in our dealings? We should very concerned and very personal in our dealings with the Vaishnavas.
I was a very impersonal person until I came to India and saw how Prabhupāda was doing and how all the Vaishnavas revealed. But maybe a little bit. I can hope one day I will become a personalist. Once the Vaishnavas. That personal healing is very important. We hope in Māyāpur we can do that amongst the Brahmacharis. The Brahmacharis probably more likely there will be that kind of relationship. And amongst the Kihastas the ladies will be more of that kind of ashram. But in general we want that pain. I don’t know what he was saying that here in Māyāpur he said that so much loving relationship between you and myself. Prabhupāda was saying, I am actually old. You’re young people. I am from India here from that time. Most of the holies are from the West. How is it that so much loving and sentiment between so much relationship.
Because it’s not material. Because you’re seeing age difference and this difference of nationality and culture. But Prabhupāda said here there’s so much because it’s not material, it’s spiritual. You should understand that spiritually these relationships are also there. Somebody was mentioning yesterday that how on the safari that we put 35 nationalities together in the same boat literally for three weeks. And so the sound devotee despite hearing another devotee from a totally other country never met before. But sometimes we are preaching to each other. They’re sharing their realization. Some devotees, they got tremendous realization. Wow. And they decided, I want to change my habits. I want to change my bad habits. I want to give off my false attachments. And despite this association, many people, they took each other’s emails and they keep in contact. They become lifelong friends. The Shomonil associates. What’s the leaf?
We hope that happens. Also. There are Dua Purima festival here at the English festival coming up. Devotees that meet each other and establish that type of relationship. We want the devotees to become closer and together. But you know, Tagore also explained the importance of that. But then he said also not to make that relationship material. And sometimes people misuse that and they say, oh, we’re very close friends. Give me some money, give me this, give me that. We start wanting to take, we want to give. We may also accept that someone gives to us. But our mood is giving. Everybody’s giving. Their rest is spiritual. The najala everybody is taking. What are you giving me? You don’t give me or not any kind and spiritual like Lord, I want to give you. You have to accept. The moon has been giving.
Especially as in giving. When the Maraj gave his affection to go suddenly and embrace him. The safari and realization. Whether or not it’s the happiest time for me, I was embraced three times by senior Vaishnava. So. You can learn so much from these relations of the Vaishnavas. What is crown should be like? What we should try to make it like? No use of being cynical. If it wasn’t like that, in Samazi spirit, we should work to make it better still. God time. We hope here that in Māyā 4 you have here people are naturally very personal. It’s a very good place to develop that personal touch. People appreciate a little things.
How when I was heard from someone, when they arrived off their bus after so much traveling and someone welcomed them and gave them a little chandan, little sandalwood paste and appreciated that these little things were important. Somebody offered to carry somebody’s bag upstairs or something. These things that made them feel, I am at home. These people care. So that’s the kind of feeling you can sense. Ananda and bastard. They feel it. They’re at homemade with each other. For Vasudevi, who has been in a prison and hasn’t seen any devotees for a long time, to see someone as dear as Dandamara has really felt rejuvenating. So we hope that devotees they can also develop that type of relationship. Giving, serving. And then when they meet other Vaishnavas they will feel that happiness be able to relate with each other in a spiritual way. Any questions or comments?
Is there a danger in familiarity in relationships that can create enemies? We see here how although the very close relationship because none of us older so mustardi he didn’t come up and hug Nandaras. He offered this namaskar. Namaskar can be folded hands to be bowing down different types of Namaskar obeisances. So he was offering them obeisances of some sort. The Nandamara as the older he picked them up and embraced. So the etiquette is to help us awake over familiarity. Where sometimes we become more familiar than we forget. This person senior Vaishnava and he commits some offense. Was mentioned yesterday by Bhakti Bhushad Ramsami that Ramchandra was Naryadda. He was very his mind awfully respect. Very respectful. Very correct in his meaning. We seem very stiff in Kali Yuga. But he was following them other personalities.
Sometimes Vaishitani also was very soft and sometimes it was very heavy. Generally what Caitanya said. This Vaishnav etiquette is important. In fact I remember reading somewhere stuck in my mind as if you don’t know Vaishnav Elikin you do not have good love for Gandhi. So Vaishnav Elikin is what protects us from offenses. Even though one may feel very much affection swaying Hunum so much affection to Haram. I want to give him so many blessings. What do you want? He said well, I am really shy. You’re right. But senior to me. But I feel so much affection for you. Like a child feels for the father. One time I can just give you a hug. He couldn’t do it. He had so much respect. He’s in Russia. He is like the top of Dhar. So then Ram again another picture.
Sometimes you see in the market picture of Ramchandra hugging Ramad so that Eric gave me permission in I was. When there’s a servant master relationship and that kind of little bit of formality Senior junior where in a situation of like more peer friendship then there wouldn’t be. Then it’s different, right? So there’s different ways of one’s relationship. One has to even though Spaghetzi one may feel so many things. But then I can’t lose complete side of the etiquette. Just because you don’t want to make me Offense. Then Bo Chittanya embrace Ramananda Rai. This is such a great devotee. Ramananda Rai is crying and ecstasy being asked by one Chitanya. But then they realized that all these other people all the staff of Raman Wright if he was the governor. They’re looking what’s going on here? Why the Ramana is hugging the sutra?
Why the governors hugging the Sannyāsī? Where was mind in their mind? The thing was equating from some material point of view. They got hold of each other. Their affection was transcendental the love of Kṛṣṇa. But they followed the external etiquette. So that’s the narrative. Insurance policy. Sometimes Prabhupāda’s servants every day they’re seeking. And every day they become very casual. And then when the problem is Prabhupāda’s guru is the disciples. Prabhupāda orders them to do this. Then they don’t want to do that. Or they’re not because of being too casual. Then they may. Sometimes they were just refused. Oh why? And then you know that was pencil actually then Taliban was healing these up. Sometimes servants realize I just blew it. I become over familiar. That’s the thing here. Once I go to the spiritual master where he goes to seeing your Vaishnava.
Sometimes you get very familiar. So you have to watch out for that. If I can show my answer dog. Very carefully. Extremely careful. Always dogs on every request. Very careful. Rabbi had so much affection for his disciples. Ego as such. Anything more than brutal. My affection to me. And we start to get proud. And maybe we think that do some offensive thing out of false pride. All these things are there also that we have to watch out for. Another question.
