20030514 Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 10.7.6 (Kṛṣṇa kills Śakaṭāsura demon)

 The following is a lecture given by His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami Mahārāja on May 14, 2003 – in Śrī Māyāpur, India. The lecture begins with a reading from Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 10.7.6.

Inflation. The liberal mother Yaśodā absorbed in celebrating the Uttana ceremony, was busy receiving guests, worshipping them with all respect and offering them clothing, cows, garlands and grains. Thus she could not hear the child crying for its mother. At that time, the child Kṛṣṇa demanded to make the mark of his mother’s breast, angrily threw his legs upward. By Śrī Kamuka, Kṛṣṇa had been placed underneath a household hand card. But this hand card was actually another form of the Sakatasura. A demon who had Khan who had to kill the child. Kṛṣṇa been placed underneath the household hand card. But this hand card was actually another form of the Sakatasura at the demon had come here to kill the child. Now, on the plea of demanding to Sakya’s mother’s breast, Kṛṣṇa took this opportunity to kill the demon.

Thus he kicked Sakatasura just to expose him. Although Kṛṣṇa’s mother was engaged in receiving gifts, Lord Kṛṣṇa wanted to draw her attention by killing the Sakatasura and therefore he kicked the cart shaped demon. Such as pastimes of Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa wanted to draw the attention of his mother. But while doing so he created.

A.

Great habit understanding what life is by ordinary persons. These narrations are wonderfully enjoyable and for those who are fortunate, they are struck with wonder upon hearing of these expressions. Extraordinary activities of the Lord, although less intelligent, regard them as mythological because a dull brain cannot understand them. They are the real facts. These narrations are actually so enjoyable and enlightening that Maharaj Parikshit and Sukhadev God Swami took pleasure in them other than the brain, that persons following in their footsteps become fully jubilant by hearing about the wonderful activities of the Lord. Mother Yaśodā was very busy celebrating the Utana ceremony of her child. She was very happily engaged and all the things that are required for that program. Uttana and Aotsukya is enthusiastic, busy, preoccupied, says Manas. Very liberal in distributing food, clothing, ornaments, towels according to necessity. Manaswini very much liberal.

Giving elder mercy gifts to all the guests, receiving them, giving everybody. She’s very busy to make it very auspicious for her son, giving all kinds of charity to everyone. Sama Gītān, whoever had assembled there, who say samagat. Samagata means who’s arrived, who’s there, who’s I at? So in that sense worshipping them, trying to satisfy them. You can get some inspiration here from other yida. How to receive guests, giving all kinds of gifts Worshipping, respecting very enthusiastically. It’s for grihastha. It’s a great opportunity. Having a guest coming, suggesting all these Brahmanas and Vaishnav in the morning is to bless her son. Just wants to satisfy everybody. This is Raja or Krisha, inhabitants of Rajesh. There’s another combination of verses.

Leading up.

To the different pastimes. These are all the inhabitants of Rajaokasa. Rajaokasa. So with all these things going on, receiving people, giving gifts, charity and welcoming everyone, worshipping them with garlands and sandalwood and all kinds of presentations. She didn’t hear her son crying and all that commotion. She didn’t hear that he was crying. So with this then. He was kicking his legs, angry why? My mother is not feeding me. So he wanted to drink milk on that excuse. He’s kicking his legs around in anger. He’s throwing a little temper tantrum. He’s so small he can’t even walk. He’s kicking his legs. One other leg hit the heart and the whole thing dismantles, falls apart, Boom. Collapses. All the things on top of it are scattered. Let’s see the grandmasing the people. How is all this possible?

A little child can knock over a gigantic strong people later on to be parent. So Kṛṣṇa, by one action he achieves many things. So one is by kicking the cart over. He practiced his mother so that he can get some help. He killed this demon. Later on Prabhupāda explains that the demon was a ghost and was possessing this heart and was just waiting to try to attack Lord Kṛṣṇa. Prabhupāda says that it’s a ghost trying to possess somebody’s body. Possessed this heart was homing in for an attack. Kṛṣṇa, on the plea of crying for his mother, kicked the side of the cart, knocked mother down. This was how hard can a little baby hit a car? They see this question, this catches the card and things smashes into smithereens and flies over.

So later when everybody’s looking to try to figure out why did this happen, they can’t figure it out. How did this car just go flying, fall apart? Some little kids say, well what does Kṛṣṇa kick too? 3 Month old baby. What kind of children always speculating why don’t you tell the truth? Your children. Don’t take it seriously. So it’s interesting because we already seen Kṛṣṇa kill Bhutana. Now he smashes some demon that’s hiding in a cart. He’s playing all innocent like nothing’s happening.

Pow.

The demon you know is trying to move in and wipes him out. And he’s playing a look what happened here, you know. So Kṛṣṇa, he wipes off the demon just with like a little brush of his hand, slight kick of his foot, as if nothing’s happening. People can’t figure out this includes calamity, right? Imagine putting your child under a cart and the whole cart collapses. Really? Wow. You know, normally it would collapse, then the baby would be injured. But somehow Kṛṣṇa, he survived no injury because the people go and flu all the pots and pans on top of flame. Very interesting how Kṛṣṇa does things effortlessly. First also he effortlessly expanded himself up to the edge of the universe and put a hole in the edge of the universe. You know how first Balaram so he touching one Rishi with his.

With a piece of grass, he can take his life effortlessly. Finished. All these people, they don’t know that Kṛṣṇa is the supreme warrior. They just think that Kṛṣṇa is their own Kṛṣṇa.

Very.

Gentle. Actually for the demons, he’s very heavy. Manda Mahārāja. All over this Vrindavan, all kinds of demons are moving in, trying to get Kṛṣṇa taking different forms moving in. Unless they’re kind of coming in and trying to kill Kṛṣṇa reciprocates with them, kills them. Nobody can even figure out what’s happening. All these dead demons and amazing calamities happening all over the place. Somehow Kṛṣṇa always survives. So then mother Yaśodā, she started chanting mantras and got the Brahmans and chant mantras. How could these things happen on such an auspicious occasion? Overtly, Kṛṣṇa wanted to make his mother pick him up. So this was a good way of attracting her attention. This feels like ghost hiding in a cart knocking over. Now. Thinking how all these things could be shown in modern cinema. Graphic special effects. Which are very interesting.

So.

There’s some people, they think this are all mythology. They can’t figure out how can a demon be in the shape of a card. How can a little child knock over a cart? Obviously it’s tough. Mythology couldn’t be true, right? That’s because they are very small thing. The supreme Lord can do anything. He can drive things and absorb things and do things, but. Do anything he wants. Just what the touch of his hand and glance of his eyes, his desires. When I was preaching in Canada,.

We.

Started to cultivate Indian community. And on a Saturday we rented a church. There’s many some churches that rented church. Other times in the west it’s not so fanatical. And so there were all the gather together. Then I was telling pastimes and different explanations again Then the head of the Hindu group stood up and said, I want to thank Prabhu here for this wonderful explanation of our Hindu mythology. And I never heard anybody, or maybe, or before maybe mountain introduction. I was really upset because here I was dedicating my life to following the Shastras. You know, Bhāgavatam is a Purāṇa, it’s Itihats, it’s a history. But here the gentleman, he was calling it a mythology. Looks like some kind of a nice legendary fictionist book or something from old times. Very unscientific. So I was very offended. I think I blasted the person.

I didn’t know. Later I found out, you see, that this Max Wooler, famous German endologist, some of his confidential letters that he wrote to his colleagues in Europe, they were revealed where he wrote and he said, we’re trying to convert all the Hindus to Christian, but we’re having a very hard time because these Brahmanas are very learned and philosopher and you can’t really deal with it. They have all the answers. So my plan is I am going to personally learn Sanskrit and I will translate the books myself because most of the non Brahmanas don’t know Sanskrit. So I will translate the books into English in such a way that I will undermine them, the faith of the Hindus in their own scripture. And this way we can easily convert them to Christians. Nice guy. He’s very highly respected as Max ruler Bhagwan in Calcutta.

And they think that he did a great service for the Hindus like the Indian culture, translating the ancient Indian text into modern languages. But he would specifically translate the things in a distorted way, like he would translate Purāṇa as mythology, deities as idols. But of course, because the Indians didn’t have the big effect he was hoping for because in their mind, whatever, he would just translate it back into their own language. Oh, this is English for Purāṇa mythology. And this idol means what is English for, you know, worshipable deity. But then when the Christians are here worshipping idols, it’s in the Bible, it says do not worship any idols, they are false gods. So then, you know, it didn’t really have that widespread effect.

Maybe it had a limited certain effect and he was able to convert some people to Christian, but what’s his intention? So people, I realized later that innocently they use these terms, they don’t really know even so much what it means in their mind there. They don’t really think of it in the same way we might from the west who know what mythology means or what Although maybe some people in the long run know they think that Gadot is just mythology and they don’t have so much faith in the Shastra because of that took a long time. And so now we’re trying to. Prabhup is very explicit to use the right words. Purāṇa, Vihasa. It’s a history, it’s not mythology. But many people that thinking and that this is like some myth, some unsubstantiated fairy tales that are handed down, things like that.

And it’s very unhappy unpleasant that people think like that. And especially for like the devotees from around the world, they definitely have been trained that these are histories. And from that point of view when you read them, it’s very relishable. You think it’s just some kind of story, tales, so many tales. Sometimes it’s just an interesting story. When you think that this is about Kṛṣṇa and what this means, then it has a much deeper significance. And hearing about it gives one fancy amount of pleasure and bliss.

So.

So this is the thing that maybe some people  will find it very difficult all these different pastimes, demons and magic and ghosts. Because in the modern scientific realm these things are not so much acceptable. Maybe the parapsychological studies and parapsychological scientists they have experienced many things and acquired many things, but they’re not considered so much in the mainstream of the science. We had a seminar in Atlanta some years ago. We’d like to. There were two professors, a psychologist, Dr. Holder, I think he was psychologist. One other person this has a. A psychiatrist or psychologist, I am not sure but he said he had done 10,000 regressions. You know what regressions are where they take people through hypnosis and they bring them back to their now grand the hypnosis. You are 18 years old, you’re 16, you’re 12, you’re 8, you’re 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

You’re in the womb of your mother. Now you are in your previous life. You run it. Not.

You just.

Just going to see things, you’re not going to feel them. You tell me what you see in English. Sometimes you take them back and they start speaking French and all kinds of problems. The person doesn’t know. She keeps them in English. Tell me in English. And then they take them back and they start to describe what they see. So he was explaining very scientifically how there are many cases that they took and that they videoed them, they researched them and there was no other explanation for how this person knew what was going on, except they had Lived a previous life. Wasn’t the obvious conclusion. And also he said they had other experiences which he would also research. NDE near death experiences and OOBs out of body experiences.

And he explained how there was some Russian person that was operated on there in Atlanta and then had left the body while on the operating table and was looking down at the doctors and they were watching, you know, the heart monitoring. He’s watching the whole thing. So somehow he went out the window, took a look, and on the ledge of the window there was some kind of garbage, like somebody left one of their mast or somewhere or some T shirt. I don’t know what it was. It was a shoe. Okay, shoe. And something was there. And then he went back. Then he went back into his body and all. Everything’s back to normal. And then he told the doctors. And so in this way, he told them what happened. You know, I left the body and I was watching you. You were operating.

Oh, you just heard our voices. You were just in, you know, you heard us through the, you know, the. What do you call the medicine? The anesthesia. He said, well, no, but one thing happened is I went out the window and I saw there was this shoe. You know, I have been. And they look and they said, we can’t even see the leads. We can’t look from them. So they have to really lean out, someone whole and look at like, wow, there was a shoe. There’s no way that he could have known that, you know, let’s see, you know, because obviously he got hanged out of the window when he was a patient, you know, intensive care. So then they had to admit, well, something must be.

While this was going on, my mother from my previous ashram priest in the United States, that life, she was president Atlanta. And she raised her hand, Mother Laurie, and she said, you know, I never realized this. I also had this experience. I had anorexia and they were operating on my hip. Like, what happened? One time she came here to Māyāpur, the first time when she met Prabhupāda. And she slipped, which is walking the Ganges. And she fell into the Ganges right up to the top of her head. And then some devotee pulled her out. Then she told Prabhupāda what happened. And he said, because of that, now, from here down, nothing can kill you. You are protected by the lagna. Then right here at the top, she had a stool.

And so they were operating here, one of her main spots in the cob over him. And she was there sitting up in the operating table under anesthesia and she realized she had gone out of her body. Looking down at the doctors and watching them operate but she never realized that it was she that knew her, that was seeing the whole thing. So she was revealing all this in this seminar that while finally she figured out what was right. She always saw that but she didn’t realize it was herself that was watching herself. Interesting revelation. So like this is these kind of parapsychologists and they’re considered a little bit far out but they actually by the standard or there must be some scientific explanation.

Actually.

The very obvious explanation of understanding that there’s a subtle body, kind of gross body because they can’t, they haven’t come to grips with that yet. They’re not able to accept that try to look for some purely chemical explanation. So this is the kind of thing we’re facing again those kind of, you know, really rigid people. So they were well this is all just a college. How could it say how could it be a demon in the form of a cart? But the probability is then you decide ghost because they didn’t believe in goats. Most people know that ghost exists and they get haunted by them.

So the ghost haunted the card and was waiting to dive in on Kṛṣṇa and Kṛṣṇa said this Rasta wants to kill me, give the card a kick and sends the demon out, liberates him and the card goes fine. So the other day in the Palestine is a Kṛṣṇa Sakata who is out of the picture. One more demon now and but you know for the devotees this is all like you know Jai Bhu, I am Śrī Jai for all these scientists. So this is what we’re facing over gradually as the violence science starts to find out all these spiral things like out of body experiences and near death experiences they don’t really have an explanation it makes any sense anyway where the Bhagavad Gītā explanation that we have a subtle body believe the gross body him and all came back in it makes quite perfect sense.

It’s very logical, reasonable. So then when you start to see that what do they then say? Makes a lot more sense. Sense especially when we get into these areas. Then what the modern science BRUCE LE this is one of those unexplainable phenomena which  will surely find out. What’s in the next stellar system. Thousand years when the next rocket ship is reaches what’s the guarantee the radio works better than even now that goes up and crash. Who’s going to be around anyway if you hear about it. So if you want to find out things beyond a normal observable phenomenon. The R Bhāgavatam is a wealth of very amazing information. So the devotees, they take it, can believe it, okay, but it’s nothing far out. What’s the big deal?

You know, for some of these scientists it’s going to be really indigestion because they’re trying to figure everything out in a very external phenomenal world rather than seeing the phenomenal world as having various levels of dimensions. In Calcutta we had this seminar like this big, you know, World congress the synthesis of science and religion and here the Nobel Prize when for visits Mr. What’s his name who discovered the laser. All the scientists know these noble diesel names like you know, different saints names. I just go these congresses every 10 years otherwise someone’s perhaps he was confiding and said you must be wondering what am I doing here with religions. But we physicists, here’s a little problem. We have reached the frontier of science. Come to the subatomic particles of quantum. These particles don’t act according to classical physics so they can understand.

Therefore they snuck to assume that they are consciousness. And it’s interesting when you read the R. Bhāgavatam explanation of how that creation comes and that thinks how they go from the Mahat Tattva and that’s the prādhān and this, the Mahatatva, this being the kind of universal consciousness and from there how things start to gel and take different subtle and engross forms. You can see sir that well underlying that consciousness is the basis of this material creation. Material consciousness is living. Then that foundation is a total unmanifested mutual energy which is ultimately coming from the spiritual.

So when you read the Śrīmad Bhagavad Singh physicists might be getting close they’re on to but they don’t really know how to explain it and how it could be so therefore because they can’t figure it out on their own and they want to hear from the religionists and the different spiritualists and try to see if they have got any clues, any ideas, anything to add that might help their research. So that’s what he was. So 20 years ago someone told me I’d be sitting with all your people. I tell them they’re mask but now I am here. That was 1987. January 1st is an end of Drambra centennial. So listen, we do have something to offer. I heard, I think it was the BI had some scientists from Harvard somewhere do a study of the Vedic knowledge that is available from a scientific perspective.

And they used to tell them that there is some valuable information that can be gotten from the Vedas, useful for various, what do you call it? Not camps or various areas of science. So anyway, that’s what we had to face. You know, of course the devotees, were like unscientific and very simple. So we believe in the Purāṇas and all these things. But it’s not like blindly we can understand logically why it makes sense that all these things can happen. Why Kṛṣṇa, Although he’s appearing like a little baby, he’s still in the Supreme Lord. He’s controlling all the universes if he wants to. Although his body appears as soft, like a little baby, little soft thing around him just touches on force on him. He can do whatever he wants. But you know, I energy is totally under his control.

Even though he’s just assumed that this little child is bonded for the sake of pastimes and exchanging love with a devotee who sees him as her baby. It’s really Kṛṣṇa’s pastimes are found wonderful and very deep. And. Even religionists, they will have difficulty understanding the pundits. They can’t all figure out how Kṛṣṇa assumes this soul human like form even while externally appearing to be on that dimension is simultaneously whatever wants to discern things from a higher dimension. Also. I wanted to share some little pastimes today. So disappearance day of our dear, our saint. This kind saint, Jainananda Prabhupāda, said he was a saint that he dedicated his life serving the Lord, started the Rathayatras in the west.

And.

He’s actually, I mean he’s my varjama Pradaksha Guru. Really. When I first came to the temple and nobody really gave me too much time, I went to the back of the San Francisco Temple in 1968. There was a group of maybe six to eight devotees building something. And this very smiling devotee came up to me and said, hi, what’s your name? I said, I said, jay. That’s my name too. I am Jay. Your number. And he said, we’re building here a chariot. You know how to build too? You know, building up like a strong man, you know, like builder.

Wow.

Do some hobbies. Building. Really? Can you hold a nail? I first wanted to check out how useful it would be. Then figure out how much time you could use in a marathon to finish this breath. So then he gave me some nail and said here, just hold it for a little extra. So I was holding. So you know, I got A hold the nail. When somebody hammers it, once it gets in the wood, you quickly move your finger, otherwise your finger is going to be smashed. So then I successfully held the nail until he could hammer it into the wood. Then he said, you know, you are so expert. I mean, you’re wonderful. You do that. You hold that nail like you’re a real expert. You know how to hammer too. It’s like, wow, a little bit. Can you hammer it?

So you put some extra hammers on the other hand. So next thing I would do, you got hammer nails. I was like, then he’s not. Show me this picture of the rathcraft with a million people and everything. The gigantic chair. You know, we’re going to build one of those. Really? It’s amazing. How many years is that going to take? 7 Days. We got to do by next, you know, next Tuesday or Saturday, we’re going to have the Rathyat. How is it possible? Oh, by Kṛṣṇa’s mercy, we need your help. Can you help everyone who pulls this chariot and sees it? They all get liberated from reincarnation and birth and like, save millions of people and change the world. Okay. I don’t have any better than that to do right now. So the next thing I was there hammering away and sighing, you know.

And then the whole time he was telling about this Guru Prabhupāda, how wonderful Prabhupāda was so many. I can’t remember, of course, all the things he said, but I just remember constantly encouraging everybody and smiling and talking. And it was a very, very listing association. So every day I was going back there and building the card. And I remember many wonderful things happened in that week. So in that week, probably the most wonderful thing happened was meeting Jayanthu and of course getting the Hare Kṛṣṇa Mahā mantra from some devotees and chanting and that. So after the day of the Rath Yātrā, I thought, okay, these very special people. And this is the kind of yoga I was doing. I looked at so many yogis, most of them, I thought they were all bogis.

I remember I went to one guy who published a book on astral projection. I went to see him and he was looking at fish in his. I went to the back of the house, happened to live there in San Francisco. I said, well, I read your book and I wanted to meet the author, you know, the great author with an aviator and astral projection and get some personal guidance. He said this, took me to his living room and told me, look at this life of flighting. When I wrote that book. And when I wrote it, I was flying. But right now I am drowned. Like, I am not able to. He was a really big fat guy and he was looking at it.

I thought, you know, he’s not really the person that seems to be able to guide me to get back to achieve a real understanding of what life is. So like this, I was going all around trying. I thought, get the book, find the author, you know, trying to. Everybody was like, all the funny stories. So then finally, when I met these devotees and telling me about Prabhupāda right now, I went on Prabhupāda. I went to Siddhan. I was still. You know, they told me, if you want to try this out, you want to learn how to swing, you gotta go in the water, dive in, try it out. Don’t just put your toei. Do it. I thought, okay, let me do it. I do it for two months. And then, you know, my mind.

What do you think?

You’re crazy. No, I will do it for two months. Give it a try. I tried so many things. It works out. Then I will sleep. It doesn’t like one something. Two months. That wasn’t how I convinced my skeptical mind, you know, doesn’t never last.

That’s.

Then I saw jaya nandavur. But he shaved me up. Shaved me up, and there I was. Mother Lisa said he’d been coming to temple for like, I don’t know how many months or a year. I’d been there for one week. And he said I would shave that pool in the caravan. Fired up. Wow, this guy did that. Next day he shaved up. So really Giant hundred kabu. So much for the association. I was so new, of course, that I could honestly remember things. But I had a second opportunity to associate with him. By that time, I’d been two years in the movement when Prabhupāda call me to send me to India. He was also in Los Angeles, and I was going out with him in the morning on the flower run.

We go to Beverly Hills and do some flower picking from the mansions of multi millionaires. Unfortunately, one guy shot at us that.

Night,.

Heard about it. He said, I think you won’t do that anymore. Any of his devotees to get shot.

But.

I heard, you know, a few past, and he was just so enthusiastic. It was like, you know, one day after the big summit meeting, she told him, hey, we’re going to have a festival. Going to have some fun. Come with me. He comes in, kitchen cleanup. Oh, this is cleaning your heart. When you throw he was so enthusiastic. Everything he did, so all in the morning, okay, it was contagious. You just had to go along with him and do everything. So he was a college graduate, a very good degree. But you know, sometimes he was also just working as a taxi driver just to make things mean. He was always very humble. He never wanted to take any credit, to always give the credit to everybody else and. But he was very fixed whatever was, you know, time of year for the rath Yātrā.

So he’d be making a new rath Yātrā and car designing the whole, you know, telescopic system and everything. He was very qualified, engineering. He was so humble, so passive, avoided offenses like anything, you know, just servants and studying Brahman’s books. But he didn’t present himself as a big philosophy. He really understood the essence of all that Kṛṣṇa conscious was and heard his fantastic about Brahma, knew about Jhana contents and things. One thing that emerged in my mind, wishful sticks out.

Very often he would protect the new devotees. The temple presidents would see somebody and they think, oh, this person’s a complete loser. The Jayananda would take them under his wing and before you know it, they’re solidly engaged in service and becoming purified by the process. You mentioned Vishada. That was one of his secret heart winning.

He’d go and give people a special Persona. Is it something like that?

He would make arrangements for Baja to be set aside for his crew or they’d go out and they’d work hard and they could always come back, you know, and they had Pushado there and very unassuming. Like you say, if you didn’t know who he was and how special he was in devotional service. He walked right by you. And I mean I had that experience. I saw him in 1976 in the New York RA theatre and I hadn’t been informed who Giant undo us. He was just a devotee in overalls. And the first time I saw him was underneath a devotee vehicle in the garage. He’d sticking out. But then when he got out he was all dirty. And this man just. You wouldn’t know he was such an advanced devotee. But there’s that pastime where he would come to Sreeman Bhāgavatam or here’s one.

He would come to Śrīman Bhāgavatam and he would be in the back and he would immediately fall asleep. And devotees with, you know, Śrīla Prabhupāda is giving a lecture pokim telling wake up and Śrīla Prabhupāda one time said, no, don’t disturb me. He does more service than all of you. And then whenever Śrīla Prabhupāda would come, like I notice we are wanting to get recognition, want him to get right up front. So he would be. He would set the example. When Śrīla Prabhupāda would come, he would just remain engaged in his service, whether it was in the kitchen or out in the back or whatever it was. And he’d say, come on. Śrīla Prabhupāda went, no, I am busy, I have to do my service for you.

And but sometimes Rla Prabhupāda would call him and there’s recordings of that also in class when he would come into the temple and feel, probably, here’s some giant. Prabhupāda had such deep love for him. And. I have a friend who was trained up by the time he became a cook in the kitchen and he would tell where he could eat enormous quantities of vashadim. And he always encouraged everybody else to eat that. And he had his favorites. I mean, that’s just personal little things, you know. But. I was there in Vridavan when he passed away in Śrīla Prabhupāda. I got the news and I remember hearing Tamal Kṛṣṇa describe how when Śrīla Prabhupāda heard, for the next day or two, he became very introspective, very inward in his mood. And he would.

Jamal Kṛṣṇa Maharaj at the time said it was almost as if he was looking, where is my disciple? Where is the God? And we all know, because it was in the back to God that now wrote that letter. He said, you know, if you have not perfected your Kṛṣṇa consciousness, then you  will go to the heavenly planets and from there you  will complete it. And then when heard the details of how he had passed away, Śrīla Prabhupāda’s voice and the tape recording right there by his ear, surrounded by devotees in the garland of Lord Jagannath coming right at that time, and Raghava there for him. Of course, he’s gone back home, back to God. And he instructed us that we should observe this day just like any other child.

We should pass by the age, we should glorify him in honor of these, for him, take a feast in his honor and that his picture should be put there on the rock. All the Rathyatra carts all around the world. And I remember hearing the next year he used to arrange the rathi yātrā every year there in the Bay area also and the year when he had passed away, one devotee took up the responsibility in all the permits and going around securing the festival with the city officials. There was one lady, described her kind of as a cranky old black lady. She’s just a real hard nosed kind of individual. Just it was such a hard time. So this pony came up and following in Jayananda’s footsteps, Chainanda would always take prashada to everybody that he danced in his service.

Whether it was arranging festivals or going to get the Boga banana Louis down there in the wholesale produce section of San Francisco or whatever. So he always bring pies or cakes or some kind of special prashadam. So this year the devotee went in following his example and presented it to us, was asking for the Permian, said well wait a minute, where’s Johnny? And and said, really he’s counselor. And this hard nosed, very rough lady, she. She had to excuse herself and she went into her office and prodded in separation everybody he came in contact with. That was the effect he had on. Melted their hearts. He was such a wonderful servant and representative consciousness. So.

When Rashula Prabhupāda came to San Francisco, were mentioning how the bullies wanted to get the attention Śrīla Prabhupāda, that Jayanta Prabhu would always go out and do services where he would miss even the Babatam class. The devotees were around Prabhupāda finding a detention of Prabhupāda. The Prabhupāda immediately left the group of devotees and went right through one door into the kitchen. And he spent about 10 minutes with Jayananda just asking about his welfare. So for devotee better service, his special.

And also later on his parents were really encouraging. Do Mary, do Marie, do Mary even really have an attachment to getting married or to the particular lady, the bowler that he did get married to. But the incentive his parents gave him, if you get married, we will give you $5,000 as a wedding gift. He gets married and he gives the $5,000 once again another $5,000 to. So you were talking about taxi driving. He did that also while he was a devotee in San Francisco. They didn’t always. They were feeding everybody. You know, I was right there in the hay to ask every district and all the young people were coming and Eating so much mashadas being distributed. And you know, it wasn’t big book distribution days or big money. Like sometimes it was hard to make ends meet.

And John under was out there working it. You know, he would come to Mambo rt, he would attend the morning program as well as temper services. He would drive a taxi for his eight hour shift, come back, finish up, you know, whatever was needing to be done in the kitchen, make sure everything was okay.

There’s one.

Time where a devotee was helping in the Rajnantra festival and they’d been running around like crazy all day long, just busy as anything. And they came back and they were tiptoeing because devotees came from all over to the Rajnatra, the temple room, the ashrams, everywhere is just packed. Devotees laying down in their sleeping bags, sleeping. So they’re tiptoeing over and finally they find a little spot in the corner of one room where they’d be able to lay down. And he puts down the devotee, you know, he lies down to take risks and Jaya Nanda gets up and he starts to tickle Jayananda, where are you going? I didn’t finish my rounds. I had to go finish. And so, you know, we can’t just pay him as the workhorse that was just a workaholic or just totally into the service.

Service, service.

He always complimented it with his arm, very strong. And he always chained his rats, devotees that also associated with him on the incense run. He started the distribution. He did so many things. He started not starting the sales, but he took up responsibility for selling the Spiritual sky incense on a route all around California, putting it into the different stores. And the devotee who got trained up, I need to take that responsibility, told me he wouldn’t. Initially. They would undergo all kinds of austerity, sleep in the car, shower, you know, outside different places. He wouldn’t spend money on himself or a hotel room. That was just out of the question.

And just like you were, I mean, sometimes we kind of cringe our shoulders a little bit when we talk how we used to act as younger devotees and picking other people’s flowers, liberating things. One pastime. He certainly can’t imitate this where he wouldn’t spend money on his clothes and his clothes would get quite old and tattered sometimes. And Kimball president said, here, you know, go down and buy yourself some clothes. So he would go to the secondhand store to buy himself some clothes. He could work on doing his regular service. But when he got there, instead of paying for it he put a pair of pants on and tries to walk out of the store, not paying for it. He gets caught, he gets arrested, and he ends up having to go to court for this misdemeanor.

And when the judge asked him, what do you have to say for yourself? He explained, well, with that $10, you could feed X amount of people Kṛṣṇa Prashada. This Kṛṣṇa Prashada helps liberate them, helps them develop their love for God. He starts preaching right there in the courtroom when he’s being prosecuted around you.

And the judge, he couldn’t believe me,.

This man’s a saint. And the policeman who was the arresting officer said, well, you know, the judge, he said, I am going to have to find you because it’s the law. And the police officer said, well, I will pay the fine.

So something amazing like Haridas Thakur didn’t want to see the pastime of word Caitanya, not in this world Sajayananda Prabhu. He also simply didn’t want to see that past time. But somebody developed this blood leukemia for which there was no cure according to modern science. But even up to the end that he would in a wheelchair, he would go to see the rath yakara being made and see all the things that were happening. But then when he could no longer function, then he was in the hospital that time the devotees were chanting. And as you heard, heard this thing, the holy names and karaba chanting while he was leaving his body with the garland of our Jagannath.

As Maharashtra said that he was in a wheelchair going up and down Waxika Avenue. A couple days before he was passing away in his room. The devotees were always lining up on the sidewalk. He had befriended so many people of many ranks. One boy in particular was befriended. He had been at over many years. When he gets in trouble. A little cigarette, a little beer. Once in a while, The leaders wanted to just take it away and put the Diana. But. I also encourage all of us that we have some important.
