By His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami Guru Mahārāja

Reading from the Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata Ādi-khaṇḍa 7.21

Under the section: Śrī Viśvarūpa Takes Sannyāsa

Jayapatākā Swami:

mūkaṁ karoti vācālaṁ paṅguṁ laṅghayate girim
yat-kṛpā tam ahaṁ vande śrī-guruṁ dīna-tāraṇam
paramānandaṁ mādhavaṁ śrī caitanya iśvaram
hariḥ oṁ tat sat

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa and Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa:

Caitanya-bhāgavata Ādi 7.21

[Heading]

ghanaghana ’hari hari’ bali’ chāḍa’ ḍāka
kruddha haya gosāñī śunile baḍa ḍāka

Translation: “You loudly and repeatedly chant the name of Lord Hari, but He becomes angry when anyone loudly chants His name.”

Commentary: Those atheists would say that if one always loudly chants the holy names, the gosāñī, or Lord, would be displeased.

Jayapatākā Swami: The atheist and unbelievers, they say don’t chant the holy names loudly, if you chant the holy names loudly, you will anger the Supreme Personality of Godhead. So, give up this loud chanting and chant silently.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa and Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa:

Caitanya-bhāgavata Ādi 7.22

[Heading]

ei-mata bole kṛṣṇa-bhakti-śūnya jane!
śuni’ mahā-duḥkha pāya bhāgavata-gaṇe

Translation: People who were devoid of devotion for the Supreme Lord would speak to the Vaiṣṇavas in this way, and the devotees felt great sorrow on hearing such things.

Jayapatākā Swami: Those people are devoid of all devotion when they say these things to the devotees that they should not chant the holy names loudly, the devotees feel great dissatisfaction and sadness.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa and Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa:

Caitanya-bhāgavata Ādi 7.23

[Heading]

kothāo nā śune keha kṛṣṇera kīrtana
dagdha dekhe sakala saṁsāra anukṣaṇa

Translation: The sound of the chanting of Lord Kṛṣṇa’s name could not be heard anywhere, as everywhere in the world continually burned in the fire of material existence.

Jayapatākā Swami: Because of this wrong preaching, people were afraid to chant the holy names, and you cannot hear the holy names being chanted anywhere. Everywhere was without the chanting of the holy names, people were absorbed in the desire for their sense gratification.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa and Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa:

Caitanya-bhāgavata Ādi 7.24

[Heading]

duḥkha baḍa pāya viśvarūpa bhagavān
nā śune abhīṣṭa kṛṣṇa-candrera ākhyāna

Translation: The Supreme Lord, Śrī Viśvarūpa, was most distressed because He did not hear any glorification of His worshipable Lord, Śrī Kṛṣṇa.

Jayapatākā Swami: Not hearing the holy names being chanted, Viśvarūpa was feeling great sadness. In this modern world there are so many activities, but the holy names of the world are practically devoid, and people are absorbed in the identification of the body as the self. So, this situation is also such a cause of anxiety for His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Śrīla Prabhupāda. So, 500 years ago Viśvarūpa, the incarnation of Godhead, He was feeling great sadness at the absence of the chanting of the holy names of Lord Kṛṣṇa.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa and Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa:

Caitanya-bhāgavata Ādi 7.25

[Heading]

gītā, bhāgavata ye ye jane vā paḍāya
kṛṣṇa-bhakti-vyākhyā kā’ro nā āise jihvāya

Translation: Even those who spoke on Bhagavad-gītā or Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam would never explain anything about devotion to Kṛṣṇa.

Commentary: Those so-called learned professors who had no devotion for Viṣṇu taught Śrīmad Bhagavad-gītā and Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, but they never explained the importance of devotional service to Kṛṣṇa. Being overwhelmed with pride from their material education, on the basis of these scriptures they taught religiosity, economic development, and sense gratification to the sense enjoyers and the liberation of merging in impersonal Brahman to the renounced Māyāvādīs.

Jayapatākā Swami: The paṇḍitas and the people who were teaching the Bhagavad-gītā and Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, they would never speak about kṛṣṇa-bhakti, rather for the materialist they would talk about pious activities and achieving higher sense gratification. And for the sannāyasīs, they would teach the Māyāvādī merging into the brahma-jyoti, but kṛṣṇa-bhakti was not spoken about, that was the people were deprived; even hearing nectar of Bhagavad-gītā and Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, of hearing about the pure devotional service to Lord Kṛṣṇa.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa and Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa:

Caitanya-bhāgavata Ādi 7.26

[Heading]

kutarka ghusiyā saba adhyāpaka mare
’bhakti’ hena nāma nāhi jānaye saṁsāre

Translation: The teachers wasted their lives in useless arguments. People of the world had not even heard the name “bhakti.”

Commentary: The word ghusiyā means “to declare,” “to explain,” or “to disclose.”

Jayapatākā Swami: Rather the teachers and paṇḍitas of Bhagavad-gītā and Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, they would spend all the time arguing with each other and they were very proud of their ability to argue and debate points but kṛṣṇa-bhakti was not spoken about. And in this way they were wasting their time.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa and Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa:

Caitanya-bhāgavata Ādi 7.27

[Heading]

advaita-ācārya-ādi yata bhakta-gaṇa
jīvera kumati dekhi’ karaye krandana

Translation: Thus the devotees headed by Advaita Ācārya simply cried upon seeing the atheistic mentality of the people.

Jayapatākā Swami: It is natural for a Vaiṣṇava to be para-dukkha-dukhi, or to feel sadness at others suffering. So, when Advaita and his devotees were seeing the world devoid of this devotion to Kṛṣṇa, and they would naturally cry at the material suffering of the conditioned soul. They knew that if the people would chant the holy name they naturally feel happy in devotional service. Seeing the misconceptions of the conditioned souls, and the suffering that it produced, naturally Advaita was crying for the conditioned souls.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa and Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa:

Caitanya-bhāgavata Ādi 7.28

[Heading]

duḥkhe viśvarūpa-prabhu mane mane gaṇe
“nā dekhiba loka-mukha, cali’ yāṅā vane”

Translation: In such distress, Viśvarūpa considered, “I will not look at the face of these materialistic people, rather I will go to the forest.”

Jayapatākā Swami: Seeing the world devoid of kṛṣṇa-bhakti, Viśvarūpa Prabhu thought, I don’t want to see the face of these materialists who are devoid of kṛṣṇa-bhakti, better I go to the forest, so that I don’t have to see them.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa and Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa:

Caitanya-bhāgavata Ādi 7.29

[Heading]

ūṣaḥ-kāle viśvarūpa kari’ gaṅgā-snāna
advaita-sabhāya āsi’ haya upasthāna

Translation: Every morning Śrī Viśvarūpa would take bath in the Ganges and then go to the gathering at Advaita Prabhu’s house.

Jayapatākā Swami: So Viśvarūpa, He takes his Ganges bath early in the morning and then He will go and take His seat in the Advaita Gosāñī’s assembly of pure devotees.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa and Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa:

Caitanya-bhāgavata Ādi 7.30

[Heading]

sarva-śāstre vākhānena kṛṣṇa-bhakti-sāra
śuniyā advaita sukhe karena huṅkāra

Translation: Viśvarūpa established devotional service to Kṛṣṇa as the essence of all scriptures. On hearing His explanation, Advaita Prabhu roared with happiness.

Jayapatākā Swami: Viśvarūpa would explain all the scriptures, how they were actually explaining the pure devotion for Lord Kṛṣṇa. And thus all his explanations were based on bhakti for the Lord. And when Advaita Gosāñī heard these explanations he became very happy, in fact he loudly shouted and even roared, he was so happy to hear, kṛṣṇa-bhakti being finally spoken about so nicely.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa and Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa:

Caitanya-bhāgavata Ādi 7.31

[Heading]

pūjā chāḍi’ viśvarūpe dhari’ kari kole
ānande vaiṣṇava saba ’hari hari’ bole

Translation: Advaita left His Deity worship to embrace Viśvarūpa, and all the Vaiṣṇavas happily chanted, “Hari! Hari!”

Jayapatākā Swami: Advaita Gosāñī wanted to show that worship of the Vaiṣṇavas was greater than the worship of the supreme Lord. He stopped the worship of his deities, and he went and he embraced Viśvarūpa, after Viśvarūpa gave such a nice explanation to the Bhāgavatam and Bhagavad-gītā, and all the assembled devotees chanted at that time, “Haribol! Haribol! Haribol!”

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa and Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa:

Caitanya-bhāgavata Ādi 7.32

[Heading]

kṛṣṇānande bhakta-gaṇa kare siṁha-nāda
kā’ro citte āra nāhi sphuraye viṣāda

Translation: Then in the ecstasy of Kṛṣṇa consciousness all the devotees roared loudly like lions, and lamentation no longer remained in their hearts.

Jayapatākā Swami: At that time, Advaita Gosāñī who was roaring like a lion, and embracing Viśvarūpa, none of the Vaiṣṇavas present were feeling any suffering, they all felt spiritual bliss on seeing the transcendental activities of Advaita Gosāñī and Viśvarūpa.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: The devotees, they were roaring like lions. [Repeats the verse]

Jayapatākā Swami: So, all the devotees were laughing and roaring like lions, they were so happy to see the transcendental activities of Advaita Gosāñī and Viśvarūpa, no one felt at that time any material suffering.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa and Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa:

Caitanya-bhāgavata Ādi 7.33

[Heading]

viśvarūpa chāḍi’ keha nāhi yāya ghare
viśvarūpa na āisena āpana-mandire

Translation: The devotees had no desire to leave Viśvarūpa’s association to go home, nor did Viśvarūpa have any desire to leave them.

Commentary: As the devotees could not leave Viśvarūpa to go home, Viśvarūpa was also unable to leave the pure devotees’ association to go home.

Jayapatākā Swami: None of the devotees gave up the association of Viśvarūpa, to go to their own houses. Similarly, Viśvarūpa, He didn’t want to give up the association of pure devotees, to go to His own house.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa and Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa:

Caitanya-bhāgavata Ādi 7.34

[Heading]

randhana kariyā śacī bole viśvambhare
“tomāra agraje giyā ānaha satvare”

Translation: After completing her cooking, Mother Śacī told Viśvambhara, “Go quickly and bring Your elder brother.”

Jayapatākā Swami: Mother Śacī, finished the lunch cooking, and told Viśvambhara, “Go and bring Your elder brother, to take His noon meal.”

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: satvare, quickly

Jayapatākā Swami: “Go quickly and bring Your elder brother, to take His lunch.”
