By His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami Guru Mahārāja

* * *

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa:

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta Ādi-līlā 13.79

putra pāñā dampati hailā ānandita mana
viśeṣe sevana kare govinda-caraṇa

Translation: The husband and wife [Jagannātha Miśra and Śacīmātā], having gotten Viśvarūpa as their son, were very pleased within their minds. Because of their pleasure, they specifically began to serve the lotus feet of Govinda.

Purport: There is a common saying in India that everyone goes to worship the Supreme Personality of Godhead when he is in distress, but when a person is in an opulent position, he forgets God. In the Bhagavad-gītā (7.16) this is confirmed:

catur-vidhā bhajante māṁ
janāḥ sukṛtino ’rjuna
ārto jijñāsur arthārthī
jñānī ca bharatarṣabha

“If backed by pious activities in the past, four kinds of men—namely those who are distressed, those in need of money, those searching after knowledge and those who are inquisitive—become interested in devotional service.” The husband and wife, Jagannātha Miśra and Śacīmātā, were very unhappy because their eight daughters had passed away. Now, when they got Viśvarūpa as their son, certainly they became extremely happy. They knew that it was by the grace of the Lord that they were endowed with such happiness and opulence. Therefore, instead of forgetting the Lord, they became more and more adherent in rendering service to the lotus feet of Govinda. When a common man becomes opulent, he forgets God; but the more opulent a devotee becomes by the grace of the Lord, the more he becomes attached to the service of the Lord.

Jayapatākā Swami: Where is the [Not clear] Eight daughter passing away as soon as the childhood.

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: 8 daughters passing away as soon as they [Not clear.]

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: Yes. This is text 73, just a few verses before. No, no 72.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta Ādi-līlā 13.72

jagannāthamiśra-patnī śacīra udare
aṣṭa kanyā krame haila, janmi’ janmi’ mare

Translation: Before the birth of Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu, eight daughters took birth one after another from the womb of Śacīmātā, the wife of Jagannātha Miśra. But just after their birth, they all died.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: 73?

Jayapatākā Swami: No no no, stop.

Jayapatākā Swami: In the womb of Śacīmātā she had eight daughters but each one after birth passed away. So, they were in extreme distress having lost their eight daughters. So, Jagannātha Miśra engaged himself in worshipping Lord Viṣṇu to achieve a male child.

Jayapatākā Swami: Then Viśvarūpa was born next.

Caitanya-caritāmṛta Ādi-līlā 13.74

tabe putra janamilā ‘viśvarūpa’ nāma
mahā-guṇavān teṅha — ‘baladeva’-dhāma

Translation: After this, Jagannātha Miśra got a son of the name Viśvarūpa, who was most powerful and highly qualified because He was an incarnation of Baladeva.

Jayapatākā Swami: Now do you want to… What are the verses that the Caitanya-bhāgavata talk about Viśvarūpa?

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: Description of Viśvarūpa when He was born?

Jayapatākā Swami: Yeah!

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: Okay.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa and Deva Gaurāṅga Dāsa:

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi-khaṇḍa 2.140

bahutara kanyāra haila tirobhāva
sabe eka putra viśvarūpa mahābhāga

Translation: After all her daughters expired, the most fortunate Viśvarūpa appeared as her son.

Commentary: Before the Lord’s advent, mother Śacī gave birth to eight daughters, who all expired. Only Śrī Viśvarūpa was present at the time of the Lord’s birth.

Jayapatākā Swami: At the time of Lord Caitanya’s appearance only His elder brother Viśvarūpa was surviving, the eight daughters had passed away. The form of Viśvarūpa was extremely fortunate.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa and Deva Gaurāṅga Dāsa:

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi-khaṇḍa 2.141

viśvarūpa-mūrti—yena abhinna-madana
dekhi’ harṣita dui brāhmaṇī-brāhmaṇa

Translation: Śrī Viśvarūpa was as attractive as Cupid personified. His mother and father were jubilant on seeing Him.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: There is a commentary here.

Jayapatākā Swami: Read the verse introduction

Deva Gaurāṅga Dāsa: Reading the Heading and śloka and translation.

Commentary: Seeing that Śrī Viśvarūpa was as handsome as Cupid, His father and mother were greatly pleased.

Jayapatākā Swami: Decorated with transcendental opulence and what’s the other word? (aiśvarya) and beauty, the Lord was more beautiful than cupid. Viśvarūpa gave his parents extreme happiness.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa and Deva Gaurāṅga Dāsa:

[Heading] Detachment from service to anything other than Kṛṣṇa who is nondual knowledge and being the personification of Vaiṣṇava scriptures.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi-khaṇḍa 2.142

janma haite viśvarūpera haila virakti
śaiśabei sakala-śāstrete haila sphūrti

Translation: Viśvarūpa was detached from the time of His birth, and He realized the purport of the scriptures in His very childhood.

Commentary: From the time of His birth, Śrī Viśvarūpa was detached from material enjoyment, which is unrelated with Kṛṣṇa. In His childhood He became expert in all scriptures.

Jayapatākā Swami: Viśvarūpa was detached from all material activities, he was fully attached to serving Lord Kṛṣṇa. And He was filled with transcendental knowledge of the Absolute truth. And all the scriptures were naturally understood and manifested in his mind.

Now the Caitanya-caritāmṛta. Is there anything more?

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: one minute, let me just check. That’s all. We will go back to Caitanya-caritāmṛta. Caitanya-caritāmṛta talks about the position of Lord Viśvarūpa. You want to hear the titles for the Caitanya-caritāmṛta verses also?

Jayapatākā Swami: Yeah.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: In the mean while read out. There is a Purport here.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta Ādi-līlā 13.74

tabe putra janamilā ‘viśvarūpa’ nāma
mahā-guṇavān teṅha — ‘baladeva’-dhāma

Translation: After this, Jagannātha Miśra got a son of the name Viśvarūpa, who was most powerful and highly qualified because He was an incarnation of Baladeva.

Purport: Viśvarūpa was the elder brother of Gaurahari, Lord Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. When arrangements were being made for the marriage of Viśvarūpa, He took sannyāsa and left home. He took the sannyāsa name of Śaṅkarāraṇya. In 1431 Śakābda Era (A.D. 1509), He disappeared in Pāṇḍarapura, in the district of Sholapur. As an incarnation of Saṅkarṣaṇa, He is both the ingredient and immediate cause of the creation of this material world. He is nondifferent from Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, for the aṁśa and the aṁśī, or the part and the whole, are not different. As an incarnation of Saṅkarṣaṇa, Viśvarūpa belongs to the quadruple manifestation of catur-vyūha. In the Gaura-candrodaya it is said that Viśvarūpa, after His so-called demise, remained mixed within Śrī Nityānanda Prabhu.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura has given a commentary.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Viśvarūpa was the ninth child of Śacīmātā and Jagannātha Miśra. And He was the reservoir of all good qualities. He was actually the incarnation of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Kṛṣṇa is the original Personality of Godhead, Balarāma is His first expansion and then after there are four expansions, of which the second is coming directly from Lord Balarāma, is known as Saṅkarṣaṇa. So, this Viśvarūpa was the Saṅkarṣaṇa of the quadruple expansion of the Lord, and He acted as the elder brother of Lord Caitanya during His childhood days then after He took sannyāsa and became known as Śaṅkarāraṇya. And Lord Caitanya found His history in Pāṇḍarapura in Maharastra. And it is said that He mixed with Lord Nityānanda or Balarāma thereafter. In kṛṣṇa-līlā, it was Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma, but in caitanya-līlā Kṛṣṇa came as Śrī Caitanya and Balarāma came as Nitāi.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa and Deva Gaurāṅga Dāsa:

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta Ādi-līlā 13.75

baladeva-prakāśa — parama-vyome ‘saṅkarṣaṇa’
teṅha — viśvera upādāna-nimitta-kāraṇa

Translation: The expansion of Baladevā known as Saṅkarṣaṇa in the spiritual world is the ingredient and immediate cause of this material cosmic manifestation.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Saṅkarṣaṇa is the expansion of Lord Nitāi. He is the cause and the ingredient of the material cosmic manifestation.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa and Deva Gaurāṅga Dāsa:

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta Ādi-līlā 13.76

tāṅhā ba-i viśve kichu nāhi dekhi āra
ataeva ‘viśvarūpa’ nāma ye tāṅhāra

Translation: The gigantic universal form is called the Viśvarūpa incarnation of Mahā-saṅkarṣaṇa. Thus, we do not find anything within this cosmic manifestation except the Lord Himself.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: And there is a Bhāgavatam verse to supports this. And it appears as the text of Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta.

Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (10.15.35)

naitac citraṁ bhagavati
hy anante jagad-īśvare
otaṁ protam idaṁ yasmin
tantuṣv aṅga yathā paṭaḥ

Translation: “As the threads in a cloth spread both lengthwise and breadthwise, so the Supreme Personality of Godhead exists directly and indirectly within everything we see in this cosmic manifestation. This is not very wonderful for Him.” This is the description of Balarāma from Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam.

Jayapatākā Swami: In the Kṛṣṇa Book we have Sanskrit or English Translation?

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: English

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: English

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: In Kṛṣṇa Book only English.

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: Kṛṣṇa Book only English.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: Sanskrit very rare. Maybe half a verse or something in Kṛṣṇa book.

Jayapatākā Swami: We will come back to the part of Saṅkarṣaṇa is the…

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: Mahā-Saṅkarṣaṇa.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: Okay! We will read back 75,76 again.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa and Deva Gaurāṅga Dāsa:

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta Ādi-līlā 13.75

baladeva-prakāśa — parama-vyome ‘saṅkarṣaṇa’
teṅha — viśvera upādāna-nimitta-kāraṇa

Translation: The expansion of Baladevā known as Saṅkarṣaṇa in the spiritual world is the ingredient and immediate cause of this material cosmic manifestation.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta Ādi-līlā 13.76

tāṅhā ba-i viśve kichu nāhi dekhi āra
ataeva ‘viśvarūpa’ nāma ye tāṅhāra

Translation: The gigantic universal form is called the Viśvarūpa incarnation of Mahā-saṅkarṣaṇa. Thus, we do not find anything within this cosmic manifestation except the Lord Himself.

Jayapatākā Swami: Viśvarūpa means the universal form, the gigantic form which shows nothing in the universe except the Lord. So, Viśvarūpa was the expansion of Balarāma as the Mahā-saṅkarṣaṇa. Just as the cloth has thread running the length and the breadth of the cloth. Similarly in this material world, the whole existence is running the length and breadth of the Mahā-saṅkarṣaṇa. This is not something very wonderful for the Lord, but this is the nature of the transcendental opulence of the Lord.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa and Deva Gaurāṅga Dāsa:

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta Ādi-līlā 13.78

ataeva prabhu tāṅre bale, ‘baḍa bhāi’
kṛṣṇa, balarāma dui — caitanya, nitāi

Translation: Because Mahā-saṅkarṣaṇa is the ingredient and efficient cause of the cosmic manifestation, He is present in every detail of it. Lord Caitanya therefore called Him His elder brother. The two brothers are known as Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma in the spiritual world, but at the present moment they are Caitanya and Nitāi. Therefore, the conclusion is that Nityānanda Prabhu is the original Saṅkarṣaṇa, Baladevā.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: Purport is there?

Deva Gaurāṅga Dāsa: Yes!

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura has given a commentary.

Jayapatākā Swami: Haan!!

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura has given a commentary.

[27.53] [Reading commentary in Bengali]

Jayapatākā Swami: Read slowly

Continues reading the Bengali verse till 28.34

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: [Not clear] said in the translation itself.

Jayapatākā Swami: How much of this is already said?

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: In kṛṣṇa-līlā, They were Kṛṣṇa, Balarāma. In caitanya-līlā, Nitāi and Caitanya.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: This is a repetition. But one point that Śrīla Kṛṣṇadāsa Kavirāja Gosvāmī makes here is that, therefore the Lord addresses Him as baḍa bhāi, because He is Balarāma’s expansion, He calls Viśvarūpa elder brother.

Jayapatākā Swami: Viśvarūpa was the cause of the material expansions and is the ingredient and the efficient cause of this material world. Therefore, Lord Caitanya called Him as ‘baḍa bhāi’ or big brother. Just as in the spiritual world there is Balarāma and Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa is the original Personality of Godhead and Balarāma is His expansion, they are known as Kṛṣṇa Balarāma in spiritual world, and as Gaura and Nitāi in the present material world. So, Viśvarūpa is considered the expansion of Balarāma or Mahā-saṅkarṣaṇa and He gave great joy to His parents and all the Vaiṣṇavas. Just by seeing Him they feel great transcendental ecstasy.
