Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: Yes!

Jayapatākā Swami: And. So, Lord Caitanya where was He reading?

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: He is in the school now.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: Is It?

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: Already in reading. Started reading.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: Wait! Wait. At the end of, after Viśvarūpa took sannyāsa Viśvambhara told His father and mother, “I will look after you” and Caitanya-maṅgala says after that Jagannātha Miśra he did this vidyārambha - for Nimāi, and then cūḍākaraṇa.

Jayapatākā Swami: [11.32 – Not audible] In Viśvarūpa took sannyāsa, He said that Viśvāmbhara, He don’t have to read, I will take care.

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: Jagannātha Miśra said.

Jayapatākā Swami: Yes!

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: No! No! No! He told Jagannātha Miśra and Śacīmātā.

Jayapatākā Swami: No, He told, you don’t worry. I will take care of you. Jagannātha Miśra is saying, I will take care of you. And he said, no need to study Nimāi.

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: So, Nimāi no need to study.

Jayapatākā Swami: Then Nimāi went house to house and He was very naughty and finally He sat on the pots and mother Śacī said, what is this you are doing? Being [not clear- 12:30] a brāhmaṇa you sit on the pots? And He said, what do I know? [12:40 – Not audible] mantra, mantra, mantrayano this, that. I don’t know, I am not studying so I can only [12:50 – Not clear]. This is the way, like that He forced His parents to send Him back to school. That’s the line of the [Not clear]

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: That’s how it is presented in Caitanya-bhāgavata?

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa: What about Caitanya-caritāmṛta?

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: Just looking into Caitanya-caritāmṛta.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: Caitanya-caritāmṛta presents Viśvarūpa taking sannyāsa within Lord Caitanya’s paugaṇḍa-līlā, and right at the beginning it says the Lord was studying grammar at the place of Gaṅgādāsa Paṇḍita. So, He was studying. This is the sequence to where you said it was. What I will do is… I will read out Subhāg Mahārāja’s English translation of this portion of Caitanya-maṅgala that you are going to hear. First, I will read the English then I will have him read the Bengali, so that you can follow.

Jayapatākā Swami:

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: You don’t need? If you don’t need. Then we can directly.

Jayapatākā Swami: I don’t need. If I need, I will tell you.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: Okay!

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa: [Repeats the verse 2.433 again]

Jayapatākā Swami: [Not audible]

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: Summarizing verse by verse?

Jayapatākā Swami: This is when Viśvarūpa took sannyāsa.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: Yes!

Jayapatākā Swami: One verse, one section, one chapter and Viśvarūpa, [Not clear] to study. When they hear Advaita Ācārya and Nimāi…

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: Calling Him for lunch.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: That only from Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata and nowhere else.

Jayapatākā Swami: Ha?

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: That only comes in Caitanya-bhāgavata

Jayapatākā Swami: Let’s do that.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: Ok! So, we will move to Caitanya-bhāgavata. Close this. Caitanya-bhāgavata.

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: 7th chapter Ādi-khaṇḍa, 8 – 114.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: You read the heading, read the verse, if there is a commentary, I will tell you. Then you can read the commentary.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa: 8 is here na? [Reads the verse [heading?] from Caitanya-bhāgavata.]

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Caitanya, only having respect to his elder brother.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa:

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi-khaṇḍa 7.8

pitā, mātā, kāhāre nā kare prabhu bhaya
viśvarūpa agraja dekhile namra haya

Translation: The Lord was not afraid of anyone, including His parents, but He displayed humility on seeing His elder brother, Viśvarūpa.

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya was not afraid of His mother and father. He was not afraid of anyone. But when He saw He is older brother’s face He became humble, and He acted very respectfully in front of His brother Viśvarūpa.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa: [Heading]

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi-khaṇḍa 7.9

prabhura agraja viśvarūpa bhagavān
ājanma virakta sarva-guṇera nidhāna

Translation: Śrī Viśvarūpa, the Personality of Godhead, was the Lord’s elder brother. From birth He was detached from sense gratification. He was the abode of all transcendental qualities.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: No commentary. If there is a commentary, I will tell you.

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: This is related or…

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: Yes! Then verse, then the next verse, two more verses are about Viśvarūpa’s quality. So, let him read out first.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa:

[Heading]

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi-khaṇḍa 7.10

sarva-śāstre sabe vākhānena viṣṇu-bhakti

Jayapatākā Swami: [Not clear]

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: You want to do one by one Guru Mahārāja?

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: We can do one by one if you want. There are three verses in Caitanya-Bhāgavata about Viśvarūpa. We read the first verse. Now we will out read the second verse and the third. Or you can do one verse at a time. I think now there is a good time to integrate Caitanya-maṅgala, description of Viśvarūpa, also in 2 verses, He also says something. Guru Mahārāja, I can read the previous one?

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: Read the previous one.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: Yeah! Read the previous one again.

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: Summarize that. You can go to next verse.

Jayapatākā Swami: Read the three verses.

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: Read the three verses? 1st one?

Jayapatākā Swami: Next one.

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: Okay next one!

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa: [Reads 7.10 verse with heading.]

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi-khaṇḍa 7.10

sarva-śāstre sabe vākhānena viṣṇu-bhakti
khaṇḍite tāṅhāra vyākhyā nāhi kā’ro śakti

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi-khaṇḍa 7.11

[Heading]

śravaṇe, vadane, mane, sarvendriya-gaṇe
kṛṣṇa-bhakti vine āra nā bole, nā śune

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: You want to hear three again?

Jayapatākā Swami: No! Where is the verse [ 22.38 – Not clear] Viśvambhara, Nimāi forgot His agraja on the order of His mother and He was digambara.

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: The verse that Nimāi called for lunch and He was digambara.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: Yes! It comes later. In this section it comes a little later.

Jayapatākā Swami: Read out up to that.

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: We read up to that?

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: Or from that?

Jayapatākā Swami: Up to that.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: This is how Caitanya-bhāgavata describes. Up to text… We are in text no 8, 9, 10 no? Yes! 8 you completed. 9, 10, 11. Then from 12 onwards it describes that Viśvarūpa was, how He was thinking about Lord Caitanya. And Viśvarūpa kept it secret. And that He would only associate with Vaiṣṇavas. And the non-devotees their attitude towards the devotees, that is then described in about 10 verses. Then it moves to Advaita Ācārya. Advaita Ācārya was crying with compassion about them. Then Viśvarūpa would go to Advaita prabhu’s house every day, after taking bath in Gaṅgā. And then there is a description of Advaita and Viśvarūpa, then it says that mother Śacī… Now we are in text 34. Mother Śacī tells Viśvambhara, after she completes cooking, go quickly bring your elder brother.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa: [Not clear – Bengali]

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: So, I think that this sequence is nice, if you could.

Jayapatākā Swami: After the aksara ceremony.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: Then we can do one verse at a time.

Jayapatākā Swami: And now after Nimāi, Viśvambhara got His brother that is in the next verse?

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: After Nimāi meets Viśvambhara [Viśvarūpa] in Advaita sabhā, all the devotees were stunned, and then they were looking at Lord Caitanya and they practically entered samādhī.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa: Description of Guru-gopāla-rūpa-varṇana comes

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: And He goes into a description of how in Vṛndāvana in Kṛṣṇa’s pastimes, the Vrjavāsīs are more attracted to Kṛṣṇa than, their own children, and then Vṛndāvana dāsa Ṭhākura says, “Lord Caitanya is the sweetest of all.”

Jayapatākā Swami: Then?

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: Then it comes back to topic at hand, it says after enchanting everyone’s heart, Lord Viśvambhara returned home with His elder brother. And then it starts describing how Advaita and Vaiṣṇava’s they were thinking about this child. And then it says Viśvarūpa as soon as possible would go back to Advaita’s house. And even at home, He was never engaged in any house activities, He would stay in Viṣṇu gṛha, in the pūjā room. And then it moves into the topic of His sannyāsa.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, before the sannyāsa and end of this chapter.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: Then it would be many verses. We are from text 8 to text 69. It can be a long chapter. Doesn’t matter. But it is one topic.

Jayapatākā Swami: And then Lord Caitanya when He is Nimāi, He is a small kiddy. He gradually running naked around and He pulls His brother, like Kids do. And then we stop, and then we will go to Lord Caitanya’s different pastimes, His mendicant to others [28:03 – not sure- Śānta Gopī devī dāsī], and Viśvarūpa speaks to Him. And then Lord Caitanya’s vidyārambha, starts to learn grammar, then a chapter on Viśvarūpa.

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: Advaita Ācārya

Jayapatākā Swami: He wants to, His father wants to give Him sannyāsa.

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: Marriage.

Jayapatākā Swami: And then he takes [laughter] His father wants to get him married then he takes sannyāsa.

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: Marriage and then takes sannyāsa.

Jayapatākā Swami: Marriage and then he takes sannyāsa. These two chapters, I see two... one is childhood and Nimāi, Viśvambhara childhood and the other Viśvarūpa taking sannyāsa.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: Viśvarūpa also appears in that pilgrim brāhmaṇa

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: Mendicant.

Jayapatākā Swami: yeah, that’s a absolute chapter. –which says Viśvarūpa is not the only player [Not clear].

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: Right now...

Jayapatākā Swami: Is that ok, makes sense?

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: Yes! You want to follow the chronology as much as possible?

Jayapatākā Swami: That’s what it’s all about…

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: That’s what told about…

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: Yes, okay.

Jayapatākā Swami: That’s what it’s all about.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: That’s what is all about.

Jayapatākā Swami: [singing] Clap your hands, tap your feet, turn around to the music… That’s what it’s all about…

[Devotees Laughter]

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: its like a school song

Jayapatākā Swami: Yah, [ laughter] Divine touch school.

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: Divine touch. Divine touch school.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: He studied in that school?

Jayapatākā Swami: I don’t think, chant Hare Kṛṣṇa!

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: That’s what it’s all about.

[Devotees Laughter]

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa: So the next subject

Jayapatākā Swami: That’s what it’s all about. Tap your feet, clap your hands [Laughter]

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa: [starts reading the verses.]

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: Summarize the three verses and then go to next...

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: and then go to Viśvarūpa’s thoughts about Nimāi.

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: You want to read it again?

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa: [Repeats the 3 verses given above].

Oh! I did not read the headings.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: That’s okay.

Jayapatākā Swami: Read it slow.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa: [reading heading and verse]

Caitanya-Bhagavata Adi Kanda 7.9 & 10

prabhura agraja viśvarūpa bhagavān
ājanma virakta sarva-guṇera nidhāna

sarva-śāstre sabe vākhānena viṣṇu-bhakti
khaṇḍite tāṅhāra vyākhyā nāhi kā’ro śakti

Jayapatākā Swami: A new Chapter on - Viśvarūpa as a child [youth] and Nimāi as a child.

Read one verse.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: Repeats the verse again.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, the identity of Viśvarūpa, the elder brother of Viśvambhara and His outstanding qualities, that He was non-different from Lord Nityānanda, and He was the reservoir of all good qualities. He studied the śāstra and in the young age and He became expert in learning all the śāstras and explaining it according to Viṣṇu-bhakti.

You see anything is missed out.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: I just read two verses from Śrī Caitanya-maṅgala similar to this. But there is slight one more point.

[Reading of 2 verse from Śrī Caitanya-maṅgala Ādi]

Just one point that, who can understand this glorious position?

Jayapatākā Swami: Actually, [Viśvambhara] Viśvarūpa was the incarnation of the Personality of Godhead, and He was acting as the elder brother of Lord Caitanya. So, who can actually explain adequately His great good qualities?

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa:

[Heading]

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi-khaṇḍa-7.11

śravaṇe, vadane, mane, sarvendriya-gaṇe
kṛṣṇa-bhakti vine āra nā bole, nā śune

Jayapatākā Swami: Viśvarūpa explained the śāstra in the form that all the senses are engaged in the service of the Lord of the senses, and all senses were constantly engaged in chanting the holy names, in hearing the transcendental qualities of Kṛṣṇa and in this way, He explained everything according to pure kṛṣṇa-bhakti.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: With His mind.

Jayapatākā Swami: and with His mind He was constantly remembering the Lord.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa:

[Heading]

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi-khaṇḍa-7.12

anujera dekhi’ ati vilakṣaṇa rīta
viśvarūpa mane gaṇe’ haiyā vismita

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: There is a commentary here.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa: [Reads the Bengali Purport. – 40.44]

Commentary: The words vilakṣaṇa rīta mean “extraordinary or contrary behavior.”

Jayapatākā Swami: When Viśvarūpa saw the activities, the transcendental and outstanding activities of His younger brother, He was amazed, and He thought that this is a very special soul.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa:

[Heading]

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi-khaṇḍa-7.13

“e bālaka kabhu nahe prākṛta chāoyāla

[Purport in Bengali]

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa:

Translation: “This boy cannot be an ordinary child. His beauty and activities appear just like those of Śrī Bāla-gopāla.”

COMMENTARY: The word prākṛta chāoyāla indicate an ordinary mundane child who is forced to enjoy the fruits of his karma.

Jayapatākā Swami: Viśvarūpa, He thought that His younger brother was actually Kṛṣṇa. He thought that This boy is not an ordinary child of this material world. His activities, His character match up with the transcendental pastimes of Bāla-gopāla in Vṛndāvana.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: His beauty also.

Jayapatākā Swami: and His beauty matches with the Bāla-gopāla in Vṛndāvana.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa:

[Heading]

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi-khaṇḍa-7.14

yata amānuṣi karma niravadhi kare

[Bengali Purport]

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa:

Translation: “I can understand from the uncommon activities He constantly performs that Lord Kṛṣṇa enjoys pastimes through the body of this child.”

COMMENTARY: The word amānuṣi means “not characteristic of a human being,” “not of this world,” or “divine.”

Jayapatākā Swami: In tīkā of this verse, particular happening I want to hear the whole verse

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: You want to hear the verse again? We read the tika then read the verse?

Jayapatākā Swami: I will concentrate

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: Read the verse, every time you read tīkā read the sloka also.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa: [Reads the verse 7.14 again.]

Jayapatākā Swami: All the Nimāi’s activities, amānuṣik activities the humanly impossible activities, are actually the activities of Lord Kṛṣṇa. Somehow Lord Kṛṣṇa is enjoying His pastimes through the senses of This child, Viśvambhara.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa:

[Heading]

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi-khaṇḍa-7.15

ei-mata cinte viśvarūpa-mahāśaya

[Bengali Purport]

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa:

Translation: Considering in this way, Viśvarūpa kept to His own activities and did not disclose this secret to anyone.

Commentary: The phrase tattva nā bhāṅge indicates that Viśvarūpa never disclosed to anyone that Śrī Viśvambhara is Śrī Kṛṣṇa Himself.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa: [Reads the Heading and śloka again.]

Jayapatākā Swami: Although Viśvarūpa was thinking in this way, He kept His thoughts as secret, that He thought that Viśvambhara was actually Kṛṣṇa Himself. He didn’t tell anyone else, rather He kept His external devotional service. He kept His thoughts private.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa:

[Heading]

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Ādi-khaṇḍa-7.16

[Bengali Purport]

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa:

Translation: He constantly associated with the Vaiṣṇavas by discussing topics of Kṛṣṇa, performing devotional service to Kṛṣṇa, and engaging in the worship of Kṛṣṇa.

Commentary: Viśvarūpa always lived in the association of the devotees, discussed topics about Kṛṣṇa with the devotees, and attained ecstasy by respectfully serving Kṛṣṇa.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa: [Reads the Heading and śloka again.]

Jayapatākā Swami: Viśvarūpa derived great transcendental bliss by constantly associating with devotees of Lord Viṣṇu and He personally engaged in devotional service chanting, studying, hearing and different devotional services, and that’s how He was spending all His time with devotees.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa:

Translation: The people of the world were mad for enjoying wealth, children, and education. Whenever they saw the Vaiṣṇavas, they would ridicule them.

COMMENTARY: Mundane people work hard to achieve wealth, children, and education, and when they do not see such propensities in a Vaiṣṇavas, they deride him.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa: [Repeats the heading and śloka again.]

Jayapatākā Swami: The people in the world especially those who are in Navadvīpa were mad after obtaining the wealth, children and education. And this was their focus. And they saw that the Vaiṣṇavas had other purpose, which they didn’t understand. So, they would laugh and ridicule the Vaiṣṇavas.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa: This quote continuous for three ślokas. Begins from this śloka and there are further three ślokas. So, we should continue three ślokas?

[Repeats the verse again.]

This is the statement of the people in the quotes.

[Continues reading the verse.]

[Bengali Purport.]

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa: [Reads the purport.]

Jayapatākā Swami: English

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: I will read out the English one... In the phrase. Okay! The verse itself has been translated as…

Translation: They would compose blasphemous rhymes and recite them when they saw a Vaiṣṇavas. They challenged, “What is the use of being a sannyāsī, a chaste wife, or a tapasvī? They must also die.

Commentary: In the phrase āryā-tarajā the word ārya refers to a Bengali poem composed about some particular incident or person. The word tarajā is an Arabian word referring to insulting poems exchanged in the form of questions and answers between two parties in a musical performance or light songs.

The atheistic residents of Navadvīpa at that time followed the doctrine of Cārvāka Muni and were thus maddened by sense gratification due to falsely identifying themselves with their bodies. Whenever they saw the pure Vaiṣṇavas they would tease them with poems that they had composed. They even said that the performance of religious duties by sannyāsīs, chaste women, and ascetics are all useless, because in spite of accumulating great piety they cannot save themselves from death. So there was no need to observe such religious duties. In other words, they considered such people unfortunate miscreants.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa: [Repeats the heading and verse again.]

Jayapatākā Swami: What’s the last line?

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa: [Repeats the last line of the verse.]

Jayapatākā Swami: Yati is sannyāsī, satī is chaste women, What else?

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: tapasvī

Jayapatākā Swami: One does austerities.

Jayapatākā Swami: The general people were so much against Vaiṣṇava dharma. They would compose different jingles from Bengali poetry or Arabic stylish poetry and ridicule the chaste women, sannyāsīs or the person doing austerity as wasting their time because anyway they have to die. So, in various way they would sing their jokes and laugh, and ridicule the Vaiṣṇavas. And they didn’t understand the purpose of the bhakti-yogā instead they think themselves as body. So, they follow the Cārvāka Munī’s idea—beg, borrow or steal somehow you get your ghee and enjoy it.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa: The continuation of the heading.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa:

Translation: “We consider someone pious if he can ride on a palanquin or horse surrounded by ten or twenty people.”

Commentary: On the other hand, they considered that a fortunate person was one who takes pride in his opulence as he rides on a horse or palanquin surrounded by many servants and associates.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa: [Repeats heading and verse.]

Jayapatākā Swami: The conditioned souls of that time would think that the real success in life was to be carried in a palanquin, or on a horse and ten twenty people front and back in this way showing your opulence, showing your richness, this is the sign of real piety and piousness and no other higher achievements in life.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa: Oh! This is the biggest tika Guru Mahārāja.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: That’s okay.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa:

[Repeats the verse twice.]

[Bengali Purport]

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa:

Translation: “You all cry for the Lord with love and devotion, yet you remain poverty-stricken.”

Commentary: The word bhāve means “with intense love,” and the word gosāñi is a respectful address to the Lord. At the time of chanting Kṛṣṇa’s names tears of love flow from the eyes of His loving devotees. The atheistic karmīs who were eager for sense enjoyment and who were offenders at the feet of the holy names did not accept such flow of tears as a symptom of love for Kṛṣṇa; rather, they ridiculed the chanting of Kṛṣṇa’s names and shedding of tears as useless, because they thought that by chanting Kṛṣṇa’s names the devotees were not able to attain the insignificant and irrelevant fruit of freedom from poverty. In other words, the devotees were not able to achieve material prosperity and happiness by counteracting their poverty with the help of the holy name, which is nondifferent from the eternally worshipable Lord Kṛṣṇa. Those atheists committed severe offenses at the feet of the holy names by their faithlessness. In other words, they did not believe that by purely chanting the holy names one attains love of Kṛṣṇa, by nāmābhāsa all of one’s anarthas are destroyed and one is freed from all material miseries, and by chanting with offense one achieves the fruits of trivarga—dharma, artha, and kāma. Furthermore, because they had no faith in the Supreme Lord, they did not believe that in the course of their service to the Lord the pure devotees gladly accept various miseries and poverty as the mercy of the Lord. They simply desired that the devotees would become greedy for material enjoyment and sense gratification like themselves.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa: [Repeats heading and verse.]

Jayapatākā Swami: The materialistic people they thought that the real goal of life was to enjoy material senses, to have the material religiosity, and wealth and satisfaction of the material desires. So, they thought what’s the use of these people chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa and some of them go to poverty and various material sufferings and all they achieve is sometimes tears of so-called love. They don’t get the real happiness of the material sense gratification. So, in this way they were committing immense offenses at the lotus feet of the Holy Name not realizing that by chanting the pure holy name, they can get pure love of Kṛṣṇa and even by the clearing chanting of the Holy Name, one can achieve liberation and end all material sufferings. And by even offensive chanting one can achieve the trivarga - accumulation of money, sense gratification and outward religiosity. So, seeing things from very materialistic way they didn’t appreciate the pure devotees and how they would sometimes tolerate various material problems, but they are focused on achieving pure devotion for Lord Kṛṣṇa.

Jaya Rādhā Kṛṣṇa Dāsa: 18. [Starts reading the heading.]

Jayapatākā Swami: How many more verses are there?

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: This is śloka no?

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: 24, I think. 20 finished. 21. 14 ślokas.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: We have another for the end of 40 consider this chapter. when Nimāi brings Viśvambhara Oh! That is a lot. Are you tired?

Jayapatākā Swami: Yeah, I need to go to the toilet.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: Okay! We will continue later.

Jayapatākā Swami: How much is left?

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: There is a lot. This is a long chapter I told you. So, we have another twenty. Atleast another 49 verses.

Jayapatākā Swami: Laughter.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: This is just Nimāi going and bringing Viśvarūpa.

Jayapatākā Swami: Laughter.

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: It’s including that pastime.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: All this is Vṛndāvana dāsa Ṭhākura’s. description of Why they were bewildered by Caitanya, comparing it to Vraja-vāsīs.

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: That is separate chapter or this chapter?

Vidvān Gaurāṅga Dāsa: No! No, the incident of bringing Him back. Till that one chapter. I told you it is long. But I can be done.

Śyāma Rasika Dāsa: Okay.
