The following is a lecture given by His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami Mahārāja on March 23, 1982 – in Navadvīpa dhāma, India. The lecture begins with a reading from Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 2.8.6.
For reading from Nishima Bhāgavatam translation and commentary by his divine grace ac Bhaktivedantha Swami Prabhupāda two canto 8th chapter text number six repeat whose heart has been cleansed living being Kṛṣṇa, the supreme personality of Godhead Padamulam the shelter of the lotus feet never Munchati gives up Mukta liberated. Sarva, Sarbha all parikleshah of all miseries of life. The traveler in his own abode, as it were. A pure devotee of the Lord whose heart has once been cleansed by the process of devotional service never relinquishes the lotus feet of Lord Kṛṣṇa, for they fully satisfy him as a traveler is satisfied at home after a troubled journey.
Repeat again a pure devotee of the Lord whose heart has once been cleansed by the process of devotional service by the process of devotional service never relinquishes the lotus feet of Lord Kṛṣṇa never relinquishes the Lord to see, for they fully satisfy him as a traveler is satisfied at home after a troubled journey. One who is not a pure devotee of the supreme Lord Kṛṣṇa is never completely cleansed in the heart, but a perfectly cleansed person never quits the devotional service of the Lord in discharging devotional service as ordered by Brahmaji Trinad in the preaching of Shiman Bhāgavatam, sometimes a representative of the Lord engaged in preaching work meets various so called difficulties. This was exhibited by Lord Nitananda when he delivered the two fallen souls, Jogai and Madai, nearby here and similarly Lord Jesus Christ was crucified by the non believers.
But such difficulties are very gladly suffered by the devotees in preaching, because in such activities, although apparently very severe, the devotees of the Lord will translate pleasure because the Lord is satisfied. Balad Maharaj suffered greatly, but still he never forgot the lotus feet of the Lord. This is because a pure devotee of the Lord is so purified in his heart that he cannot leave the shelter of Lord Kṛṣṇa in any circumstances. There is no self interest in such service. The progress of culturing knowledge by the jnanis or the bodily gymnastics by the jogis are ultimately given up by the respective performers. But a devotee of the Lord cannot give up the service of the Lord, for he is ordered by his spiritual master. Pure devotees like Nard and Natana and Prabhu take up the order of the spiritual master as the sustenance of life.
They do not mind what becomes of the future of their lives. They take the matter very seriously, as the order comes from the higher authority, from the representative of the Lord, or from the Lord himself. The example set herein is very appropriate. A traveler leaves home to search for wealth in far distant places, sometimes in the forest, sometimes on the ocean, and sometimes on hilltops. Certainly there are many troubles for the traveler once he is when he is in such unknown places. But all such troubles are at once mitigated as soon as the sense of his family affection is remembered, and as soon as he returns home, he forgets all such troubles on the way.
A pure devotee of the lord is exactly in a family tie with the Lord, and therefore he is undeterred in discharging his duty in a full affectionate tie with the lord. Didn’t expect to see you here this morning with Jayapanji. We’re just reading Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, second canto, 8th chapter, text number six. But perhaps you should lecture. I just read the purport. You should give the class well. Since you come an exalted guest.
You.
Should sit and let you speak.
Another asana from mama. We’re on the one text number six.
We just read the purport. If you’d like, they can end in reading the translation in purport.
Very nice. Oh my. Ganathi marinan Jana Salakaya Maiśrīgurave Nama Śrī Chaitanya Mano vistang Stapitang Jaina Bhutali Swayang nama oṁ Bishnu Padaya Kṛṣṇa Prashtaya Bhutani Śrī Mate Bhakti Vedanto Shamini Tina Mini Namaste Sadh satire Goravani Pracharine Jayosi Kṛṣṇa Choi Hare Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare Ramo hare Ramo Ramo hare a pure devotee of the Lord, whose heart has once been cleansed by the process of devotional service, never relinquishes the lotus feet of Lord Kṛṣṇa, for they fully satisfy him as a traveler is satisfied at home after a troubled journey. So you already read the purpose. The Śrīla Prabhupda had often told us that devotional service was such a perfect process that one once tasting the nectar at Lord Kṛṣṇa’s lotus feet, that devotee could never forget that.
That sometimes even Śrīla Prabhupāda was asked about devotees who had fallen away, and he would comment that they had tasted the nectar of Ka’s service. Therefore, they can never forget. They will be back. Their connection, their attachment is always there, and the pure devotees are one who has completely surrendered unto the lotus feet of Kajden gets a special shelter of Kṛṣṇa. So that even as the examples given here, Parikshit Maharaj, somehow or another, by the will of providence, he became angry and put a snake on the neck of Shami Khamuni, the father of Śrīngi. And as soon as he did so, as he was walking away, he thought that, why did I do that? I did something which was wrong. And when heard that he was cursed by the son of Hamika, he took it that this was the will of Kṛṣṇa.
And instead of going and countercursing or restopping that curse, he accepted the curse of Swingi. And sure enough, by doing so, Kṛṣṇa also sent him, although he was cursed, had to die in seven days. At the same time he was sent Sukhadeva Goswami, who actually spoke to him, the Bhāgavatam. So because of, in one sense, the tolerance of Parikshit Maharashtra. And even though, because he was a pure devotee, even somehow or another, he made some mistake. But that didn’t end his position or relationship with Kṛṣṇa. Rather, that relationship can be broken. But due to his action, there was some kind of a reaction which came. And so he took it that this is the will of Kṛṣṇa to give me some kind of an instruction.
This may happen to any of us in our devotional career, that we may do something later, we may think about it and know that we did it, but it wasn’t actually authorized. And then there might be some reaction for that. So a type of mature way of facing that is to take it as the will of Kṛṣṇa and then try to use that situation not to further complicate the issue, but to rather reestablish whatever slightest lapse there was. It rather to reestablish that relationship with Kṛṣṇa on a more firm ground. Actually, this relationship with Kṛṣṇa, with spiritual master, this is something which is not broken, especially it’s not broken by Kṛṣṇa’s desire.
Kṛṣṇa wants that the living entity should come to him unless the living entity himself breaks that link with Kajden, which, as we can see here, would happen only where there was not full faith or where there wasn’t a time where that person actually had fully tasted Kṛṣṇa. Someone who had fully tasted Kṛṣṇa would hardly want to ever break that relationship. Even if there was any temporary lapse, that relationship would be a continuing and eternal one. In the same way, the disciple to the spiritual master has a permanent relationship. And that relationship pulls one back to Kṛṣṇa connects one with Kṛṣṇa, and this is something which is very personal and very dear, of course, to every disciple. BaSIC difference between Kṛṣṇa and the spiritual Master, of course, is that the spiritual master is also in connection with Kṛṣṇa.
As the CaiTanyA Charitamrita has described that the I know that Kṛṣṇa Sarup is my spiritual master. I see him as the expansion of Kṛṣṇa or as the representation of Kṛṣṇa. But at the same time he thinks of himself as a servant of Lord Caitanya or servant of Kṛṣṇa. So although for the disciple, the order of the Guru is just like the word of Kṛṣṇa, at the same time the disciple doesn’t forget that my Guru is also the servant of his Guru is the servant of Kṛṣṇa. It’s not that there’s some undifferentiated that Guru is Kṛṣṇa, like the Mayavadis say, Guru Brahma, Guru deva, Maheshwaram, all that slokas we don’t generally use because they’re misunderstood.
So another thing here is very wonderful is that a traveler leaves home to search for wealth in far distant places, sometimes in the forest and sometimes on the ocean and sometimes in the hilltops. Certainly there are many troubles for the traveler when he is in such unknown places. But all such troubles are at once mitigated as soon as the sense of his family affection is remembered and as soon as he returns home, he forgets also his troubles on the way. In other words, we are eternally related with Kṛṣṇa. But somehow or another in this material world, we had forgotten our relationship with Kṛṣṇa, and by the mercy of Guru and Kṛṣṇa, again we remember our relationship to Kṛṣṇa. And in that relationship our being part of Kṛṣṇa’s family is reestablished. So in that regard, actually, then we immediately feel relief.
Immediately we feel that now we’re in touch with home, with our eternal home. And although we’re wandering around in this material world, we’re going here and there because of our family connection with our spiritual master, with Kṛṣṇa, we feel very much relieved from all the troubles and tribulations which are ordinarily experienced by the living entities in this material world. So that, of course, for the disciple, when the spiritual master leaves, that’s of course, initially a great shock, just like for the disciples of Rla Prabhupda when he left. It was, of course, and still is, it is a type of a great shock that no longer we get the personal chastisement and their personal instruction and the personal service of our spiritual master. But we have to carry on the connection with him through following his instruction, through Izvani.
And that connection is realized after, of course, there’s a heartbroken period, which of course, the heartbreak period should never end in one sense, but in another sense, at the same time, one does feel the presence of the spiritual master while carrying out his instructions. And in a type of more mature realization, just as a traveler who is traveling somewhere, distant place, we see that sometimes sailors, they go from India and they go in these big ships and they go and they stay out for four or five months, six months, and they come back, and then they see their family for a month or two. Then again they go out, and while they’re going out, they’re just thinking of their family. They’re maybe writing a letter, or they’re seeing some picture, and they’re feeling very happy in that relationship because they’re working.
Everything is for coming back and seeing their family, and for the happiness of their wife and children. And by that, somehow or other, they are satisfied. Otherwise, why would they again go out on the ship? Or why would they take such difficult, if they weren’t feeling some happiness, some satisfaction while they were going out? And that is basically the comfort of knowing that connection with their family. So in the same way, the connection with Kṛṣṇa, with the spiritual master, through the spiritual master, is such that even we are forced to wander around in this mature world. Even sometimes we are in a personal association, sometimes we are connected by following instruction that we feel relieved, we actually feel connection with Kajden.
I especially like this example in the terms of family, because we saw that house of Prabhupda when he went and preached to the west, how he had to go all alone, he often instructed us that had it been us to go off alone and simply try to establish Kṛṣṇa consciousness, that probably we wouldn’t have made it. But by his great faith in his spiritual master’s order, and bye the mercy of Kṛṣṇa and his spiritual master, Bhakti Siddhānta Sarasa Thakur, he was able to establish Kṛṣṇa consciousness all over the west. When we asked him what was the secret of his success, he said, simply, following the instruction of my spiritual master, having faith, trying to please the previous acharyas. So Śrī the Prabhupāda has so kindly given us the family of devotees. So that makes the traversing so much less difficult.
One lone man, if he’s going off to do his business and he only is thinking of his family, that, of course, may give some comfort. But when he can go with his brothers and sisters and uncles and so many various relatives, then it becomes a much more of an easy thing, doesn’t become so austere, doesn’t become so difficult. And that type of family, we saw in the time of Caitanya Mahāprabhu, that actually everyone was cooperating together, although there was no big organization then, because at that time, Wacheytani Mahabru himself personally, he did everything. He was actually in charge of the whole situation.
But they would go every year to see him in Jagannath Purī, and he would give them his personal instructions, and he would give his mercy to them, and they’d meet together, and they’d hear about what the different preaching efforts were in the different places, and they would have big sankirtans together and participate in the Ratha Jatra. And then again, Lord Caitanya would bid them farewell, and they would all go back to Bengal and to their different areas, and they would again do one more year of preaching. And so, in the same way, Prabhupāda has so kindly given us an opportunity that we can sometimes come together and sometimes we can discuss our preaching progresses and then again go out and preach. And similarly, even sometimes within a family, there may be some disagreements.
But then, because the family connection is so strong that Prabhupāda said we should consider it like the disagreement amongst children, just like fighting between husband and wife, to be not considered very seriously. Of course, the relationship is something which is more strong than something which is permanent, philosophically or in preaching, there might be some disagreement between God, brothers, or between. But that program of, ultimately, we have to traverse the path of our previous acharyas, and that is our ultimate destination and goal. That family feeling and that link is something which I feel overcomes all the difficulties, overcomes all the. This is proven, of course, by Shastra, by these examples, as well as by even our personal experience, that sometimes difficulties come up.
And again they are corrected because of our family feeling, of our connection with our previous, with our founder Prabhupāda, and with our other devotees. So one thing here is pure devotees like Nārada and Nityānanda Prabhu take up the order of the spiritual masters, the sustenance of life. They do not mind what becomes of the future of their lives. They take the matter very seriously, as the order comes from the higher authority, from the representative of the Lord, or from the Lord himself. So I, you know, in one sense, I congratulate and all the devotees who have come here very faithfully on the order of their spiritual master. I don’t find anything wrong in the disciples, following the instruction of their spiritual master. This is the basic. This is the basic point of spiritual life, and no one can find any fault in that.
Somehow or another, we’re wandering about in this material world, and we’re basically lost. Brahmando, Brahmite, Kono Bhagyawanji. Then, by good fortune, somehow or another, we meet with a spiritual master, Guru Kṛṣṇa Prasadi pai bhakti Lothavi. And he gives US the seed of devotion. That’s also by the mercy of Kṛṣṇa. We’re desiring to reach Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa sends us to his pure devotee, to the spiritual master. We get the seed of devotion, and then we take that seed of devotion. And with the waters of hearing and chanting, we water our devotional creeper. And that increases, increases with the watering. And it goes beyond the 14 planetary systems. It goes outside the material barrier into the spiritual sky, into the Brahma jyoti. Then it goes up to the Vaikuṇṭha locust, beyond the Vaikuṇṭha locust to Goloka.
There it wraps ARound the lotus feet of KṚṢṆA, of Rādhā Kṛṣṇa, and the fruits, flowers of bhava and fruits of prema, they appear on that transcendental tree of devotion. So that is the basic system. We get this seed. Somehow or another, we have to protect our seed, our plant, we have to water it, and then it goes on growing and growing. So Lord Caitanya, he warned us against two dangers to our devotional creeper. One danger, he said, is called Vaishnavapurādhā. He said, vaishnavapurada, matal hati uparai, upure, that the tree bhakti can be pulled out right from the root by committing offenses to Vaishnavas. And once the tree is pulled out, then naturally all the leaves and branches will dry up. So we want to, in our devotional life, avoid committing any kind offenses to Vaishnavas.
But somehow or another, sometimes we fail to see Vaishnavas as Vaishnavas, and we start seeing them in another way, and we commit offenses. In fact, Śrīla Prabhupāda, he many times cautioned us that, don’t think that only I am the Vaishnava, that all of you God brothers. At that time, of course, there was only as God brothers that you’re also my disciples. All of you are pure devotees. Of course, there may be different levels of pure devotee, but he confirmed that everyone is a pure devotee in one level or another. And he said, therefore, you shouldn’t offend each other, you shouldn’t commit offense upon each other, of course. What is an offense and what is the constructive criticism amongst God brothers, of course, both things are there.
But something which is basically malicious or which is untrue, which is motivated particularly to rather hurt the person rather than help the person in spiritual life, or even something which is really not inappropriate, would all probably fit more or less under being an operada. Well, amongst God brothers there might be. There is a circumstance, of course, of constructive criticism, but that’s amongst God brothers, because they’re peers. Disciple relationship with his spiritual master and the God brother of his spiritual master is something different. Śrīla Prabhupāda always cautioned us not to offend his God brothers, although he gave so many instructions.
At the same time, he did caution us that after all, even after he might say something which appeared to us a bit strong, or maybe if were to say it definitely would have been offensive, and then if some disciple repeated the same thing, he would say, they’re my God brothers, you have no right to talk about them, don’t commit offense. So in other words, sometimes spiritual master may give some instruction to disciples about God brother, but then the disciples themselves should not imitate the spiritual master. They should follow in their footsteps. They shouldn’t themselves take it upon themselves to criticize the spiritual master of their guru, rather, or the God brother of their guru, and so on. So this offense, that thing we have some or another, we have to guard ourselves against offense.
And the other thing, of course, that Mahāprabhu warned us against is he said that we should avoid weeds. Upasaka nishida cha kuti nati ji bahin that. So all the experts in Bengali. So these six type of weeds, basically breaking regulative principles. Taking kutinati means kind of diplomatic or kind of fault finding mentality. Then jīva hingsa violence as well as eating meat would probably also would fall under jīva hinksa and violence to oneself or to other or to one spiritual life. Then pūjā, desire for material worship, pratishta for material position, and lab for profit. These things are weeds that can even grow up in the hearts of very advanced devotees. We saw that Bharat Maharaj, he developed a certain kind of an attachment. Of course, there’s other weeds that may also grow up various type of attachments and different things.
We saw how Bharat Maharaj, an attachment grew up for a deer, so much so that the next life he had to take birth as a deer. But after that, again, he was able to take birth as Jorah Bhart, and he was liberated or he was delivered by Kṛṣṇa. So a devotee should never think himself is immune from. As long as we’re in the material world, the possibility of weeds growing up is there. And sometimes God brothers may warn one against weeds. And naturally, we take that if it is representing the spiritual master as a good instruction, a good cheek shot. On the other hand, sometimes people take it upon themselves to just go around telling people, this one has the this weed or that weed. But maybe he himself is not really qualified to make such thing, and it’s not meant for public airing.
It should actually be dealt with personally, with the person, in a very proper way. So anyway, these are, of course, all detailed applications. The basic idea is that when we get this seed of devotion by the mercy of Guru and Kṛṣṇa, we should water it very carefully by regular hearing and chanting. We should avoid offenses. We should avoid letting weeds come up. And this is our basic process of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Śrīla Prabhupāda said, 50% of our time should be given for watering and 50% should be given for weeding. So simultaneously, both things are necessary. So we can understand that even some weeds are there. That doesn’t disqualify a devotee, because the devotee, once he’s tasted, once his heart’s been cleansed and actually tasted the nectar of Kṛṣṇa, then basically a devotee, even sometimes weeds are there.
That in itself doesn’t mean that the connection with Kṛṣṇa has been cut. Someone who has been connected with Kṛṣṇa, even weeds are there. It may, so to speak, stop the progress. Prabhupāda said it would stop our progress. We would be stuck up, but it wouldn’t end the connection with Kṛṣṇa. Weeds are not a permanent thing. We do something that they can always be cut off. Rather, the example given in offenses is something much more dangerous, because when the actual root is taken out, that means that the spiritual life is finished. That by committing offenses to the spiritual master, on the level of spiritual master, that to pure vaishnavas, that can actually take out the root of our devotional life. And as a result of that, we get completely lose our devotional creeper.
Actually, one time we saw how a disciple gave up Śrīla Prabhupda nithai and took some other spiritual master. It was a very serious thing. And Prabhupda told us that he won’t get a good, a pure spiritual master again for one lack of birth. And we thought that was the heaviest thing we could have heard. But then Śrīla Prabhupāda explained that Caitanya Chernamed, it mentions that if one offends, the spiritual master, gives him up. And that’s called guru tag. Giving up the spiritual master without, you see, actually proper reason, then by that kind of great offense, one has to lose the right of finding a spiritual master for crores of births, crores of days, of Brahma. So Prabhupda, by giving only 100,000 births sentence, so to speak, it actually reduced it to.
Because in this Kali yuga, life is so short anyway, that it’s a very short sentence, comparatively. So our relationship with the spiritual master, of course, is something which is very intrinsic in our spiritual life. We have to be very careful not to offend the spiritual master, not to offend the Vaisyanovas, not to allow ourselves to lose touch. At the same time, the whole system is very scientific, and the very scientific system, as it’s coming down, is something that Prabhupāda wanted to have protected very carefully so that we could avoid any kind of disturbance by all these very confusing and very difficult situations that sometimes come up from outside. He said, as long as within ISKCON, we are together, we are strong, that we keep our faith. On his instructions, then nothing can stop the advancement of our movement.
But from insight, if we have fight, if we have disagreements, then he said, that is the real danger. So I am always praying to Śrīla Prabhupda that we may be able to always overcome that tendency which is out there in every condition soul, especially in this kali yuga, to, on the basis, some material reasons to disagree with one another and can always stay fixed up to Lotus feet of our spiritual master. I am sure that everyone feels the same way, that in relation to the spiritual master, they’d like to see everyone united and everyone serving in a very cooperative spirit. Sometimes, even in spiritual life, there are disagreements, and those may be on a philosophical or a spiritual basis, but, and as I mentioned, that those things are to be overcome, really, amongst the people of that particular level.
And by, I think, the greatest harm is done when it’s taken away from that simple, mutual discussion that Prabhupda requested us to do, and then taken to other levels. And then it becomes just like in Daksha’s arena, where we saw that there was a disagreement between Daksha and between Lord Shiva. But, of course, Daksha was in the wrong. He was offending a pure vaishnava. But then when it came down to Daksha’s other followers and to Shiva’s followers, then it became an irreparable mess. So finally, Lord Shiva, he departed, trying to just avoid the situation. So somehow we have to avoid this type of situation where it becomes like Daksha’s arena and we start offending each other, when actually we’re forgetting that we’re all family members, we’re all part of Śrīla Prabhupāda’s greater family.
And I know that certainly the tendency on my part, maybe they’re as much as on anyone else’s, that we forget our eternal tie. And that therefore, I always pray to Śrīla Jayatirtha Maharaj, Goswami Maharaj, to remind me of my relationship with Śrīla Prabhupda and my duties to him as my beloved God brother, and to all of my other God brothers, as well as to their disciples and to the whole ISKCON body as a whole, that in this way, by being reminded by my beloved and senior God brothers, then I hope that I will be aided in having a clear understanding of how to serve Śrīla Prabhupāda. And that, of course, is mentioned here, is the goal of our life. Just like Lord Brahman, Narad and Nichinanda, they take up the order of the spiritual masters, the sustenance of life.
So anyone who can help, just as Lord Nityānanda said that J Bhojay Gorango, she amar Pranre, that whoever is worshipping Goranga, he is my life. Or just as Narutam das Thakur or bhakti Vinod said, brihe ba bone j bhag habo le dake. He said, I am a father. So therefore we try to respect. Here, at least in Māyāpur india, we try to respect all of the goranga bhaktas. One time Prabhupāda said, you’re feeding so many of the regular villagers. What about all the devotees of Goranga? You should see all these hadus. When they come, they all get prasad. You should see that all the devotees, in fact, Prophet and Vrindavan started a special thing, serving all of the vaishnavas and giving them prasad. That he said, that is more important than, of course, just serving the poor people.
The Vivekananda followers like to say, basically, darija Narayan, all this type of thing. We don’t accept these statements. Narayan can’t become darijaro, but actually we serve the dasa Narayan. We serve the servant of Narayan. And by this way, Narayan is pleased and the whole world is purified. So somehow I hope that the service attitude can be reestablished in the world, that everyone can see only Kṛṣṇa and Kṛṣṇa’s devotees as worshipable. And get over their passionate, enthusiastic idea of serving politicians and materialists and other people. And just take up serving the pure devotees and serving NiRayana, serving Kṛṣṇa, serving Lord CaiTanya. And then all the difficulties in the world will very quickly go. So that responsibility of course, is upon all of you. Because as devotees of Kṛṣṇa, it’s your duty to give the example and spread this message to everyone.
And I hope that by the mercy of Guru and Kṛṣṇa you get strength to do that more and more. Hare Kṛṣṇa.
Mahavishundas from London.
You told very correctly that Guru tiaga for crores of birds you cannot repair them. Again, I would like to ask you that why gravest Vaishnava Prada was performed against our dearest spiritual master in ISKCON. And if it is performed, why we poor souls have forced for that aparada for crores of years. We may not. For so many lives we may not come across a good spiritual master. We are completely satisfied with him. You think our position. And how can you ten gurus tolerate that Vaiva Prada against him? We are fortunate that we are with him. But there are so many. Our God brothers. They are completely bewildered. They dont know what to do. Their situation is very merciful. Im sorry to let you know, but these things. I think it was completely unnecessary.
I dont know what should I ask you, but how you ten gurus could tolerate this gravest Vaishnava prajde.
The. Of course, I think that you all know that there was some little misunderstanding or maybe. And at that time, the misunderstanding, of course, Chutherpod mentioned to me that actually had no intention of leaving Iskcon. But he just. Due to so many pressures, he decided to come over here. But there was some misunderstanding. And when his disciples were leaving then they were requested to wait. And I came over here. Actually, Bhaktipad asked me to come with him with Gopāla Kṛṣṇa Gosalam. He came here and were discussing. It seemed that things were going to be worked out. But then there was anyway some discussions held with the disciples. But one of the things that was told to them was that they were never told that they. At least by any of the Acharyas or as far as I know, by any of the see.
In anger or in whatever. I don’t know what other members. I mean, I have heard complaints and I won’t deny them. I don’t know. I mean, I wasn’t there. But as far as the Acharyas or the governing body members were concerned. They simply tried to avoid offense. But I personally saw Bhaktipd, and I personally also incurred, although I wasn’t really part of those particular meetings. But I have heard them encourage the disciples that the request was there, that they felt it was their duty to stay in ISKCON and that would bring back Tirthapad to ISKCOn, because at that time we had the conception that he had left Iskconda.
(Side B of the Cassette)
And. But not to give up Tirithipat, of course, Tirithipat himself being, you know, very magnanimous, he told them that, well, if you lose faith in me, then that’s another thing. I don’t mind if you take from someone else or whatever, but if you keep faith in me, then also I am dedicated to delivering you. So in that sense. But that idea was never present by the G. B. C. Personally that anyone should give up. But it’s a fact that there was the preaching that they shouldn’t leave ISKCON, that if they were to wait for Tirithapad, hopefully Tirithapad wouldn’t leave ISKCON. That’s what we thought, that at that time he was leaving ISKCON. I think that he’s expressed now that he never really felt that he’s an ISKCON man. He never wanted him to leave Iskan. His little misunderstanding, there was some basic.
There were some heavy feelings regarding Śrīdhar Maharaj. And I think that because of his very deep love and faith in Śrīdhar Maharaj, he found that unbearable. And so not to commit any offense to him, Śrīdhamaraj himself said that he felt that Iskan wasn’t ready for him. It’s only someone very advanced who could understand his instructions, or could hear his instructions, which sometimes might be a little bit different than Śrīla Prabhupāda’s, and not have their faith disturbed in Śrīla Prabhupāda. No, I personally feel that Jay Tuta Goswami Maharaj won’t have his faith disturbed in Śrīla Prabhupāda by associating with Śrīdhar Mah, because he has a deep love for Śrīla Prabhupāda, and he’s always manifested that. And so I don’t see any difficulty in his losing his relationship with Śrīla Prabhupāda.
But at that time, there was a lot of confusion, there was a lot of misunderstanding. And if anyone told someone to give up Jayatirth and Maharaj, then I would protest against that. And I think all the other acharyas definitely also protest against that. That type of statement was done out of anger and out of rashness, and it wasn’t done thinking about the welfare of those disciples or the welfare of the Kṛṣṇa conscious movement, but was set out of some other, you know, passion or something. And we try to stay away from that. And I think that the proof of that is that the disciples who are not here with Jai Tirthamara, from reports I have heard, are still doing his guru pūjā are still waiting for his instruction.
Of course, they are confused because they don’t know that whether because I am the only one, I think that’s really come to make any communication. They don’t know whether he’s within ISKCON or what’s his position. And it’s kind of a whole circumstance is very unfortunate. There’s blame on, you know, as far.
As the way that things laugh, whether I am a boy, show or judge, what is my position?
I think it was a little paranoia on both sides was the actual kind of a thing. Actually, Jayatrthamara said that he asked them to come over with their tape recorders. He wanted to reassure them that actually he wasn’t, because some people maybe said things that they thought doubtful things. He wanted that actually Shiddem Miraj wasn’t someone who wasn’t a spiritual entity. So he asked them to come with the tape recorders. But when the message came to my airport, it was, bring all of your belongings and people coming with their knapsacks out. And then there was the english devotees that, you know, became frightened that the whole yātrā is leaving ISKCON. It was like a paranoia, kind of a reaction, counter reaction. And then, you know, just, you know, that’s what happened.
That’s true.
It’s nice to know from you all these things, but I will give you just one example. That was not a very serious thing to consult Śrīdhar Maharaj once. What happened? I always used to go to Bhaktivedant Manor from central London. I always used to drive and I knew my way very well. But once it so happened by divine will that I lost my way. I lost my way. I couldn’t find way at all to go to Bhaktived Manor. Then I was completely bewildered. I had a to z book. I wanted to consult a to z. Yeah, so that. Yeah, so that we can go to the correct path. That is book Bhāgavata. I consulted Bhuk Bhāgavata to go to the correct path. I found out correctly. I found out my position.
I found out how I should drive and how I should go to the correct road. So that will lead me to Bhaktivedanth manor. Everything was completely satisfactorily explained to with the help of a to z. I entered into the correct lane looking a to z. That is Bhuk Bhāgavata. The lane was very big, very long in the middle of the lane. Somehow or the other, I lost my patience again. And when I lost my patience. I didn’t dare to look to a to z, because according to a to zenith, I was completely correct. I was on a correct path. But then Etu set couldn’t satisfy me. I had to take help from somebody who knew the path. It is Śrīdhar Maharaj, our dearest spiritual master is not committing any crime.
He is trying to improve himself going towards Kṛṣṇa so that he can help us very nicely. When I was bewildered completely in the correct lane, because of the length of the lane, I had to take help of the passersby who knew the lane and asked him according to a two z, I am correct. But I don’t know whether I am following the correct path or not. So please tell me whether I am correct or nothing. He said, don’t worry, the path is bit longer. You are quite correct. And you go ahead, son, you will go to Bhaktivedant manor. And I heard him, I went and eventually I went to Bhaktivedanth manor. Is it my crime to ask the passersby that I am on the correct path or not? How can this be treated as something which is not desirable that I fail to understand?
We always consult book bhāgavatas and person bhāgavatas. No doubt Śrīla Prabhupāda is really very pooji worshipable. But in his absence, is it a crime to go to somebody else who is really exalted, having an exalted position, who can explain to us the intricacies of the spiritual matters? Is it a crime to go to him? And if it is not, could it not be rectified immediately so that the whole ISKCON family could be together? It should be rectified.
When I answer this, I am not speaking as a G B C person or as a. I am just speaking as a devotee, as a Śrīla Prabhupāda disciple? Not that what I am saying is representative of, you know, because there may be so many diverse opinions, but from my own understanding of the situation, or rather of Śrīla Prabhupāda had given various instructions. And somehow, of course, as you say, that you had your a to z book bhāgavatam, and then you had to, you became a little bewildered. And so then you wanted to ask other people the way.
So in that way, Śrīla Prabhupda had instructed us that although he felt that were all, were pure devotees, that we might, so to speak, want to reconfirm something as we’re traveling on the way or we might need to have it reconfirmed, because we may get a little bit, all the directions are very clear, but in the actual application, one might get a little bewildered. And he particularly gave us a system like that we should consult amongst ourselves as a governing body commission, just for that very reason. That, of course, Prabhupda, he couldn’t get lost on the way, because he was very experienced. And Nitya siddhae, and especially, you know, he was through the Prabhupāda, the founder of charity of ISKCON.
So, but for us, as were traversing, say, for fewer years or for whatever, it was also the desire of Bhakti siddhānta Sarasa Thakur, that in the future, the movement of spreading Kṛṣṇa consciousness should be done in that type of a cooperative way. And there’s even one poem by Śrīla Prabhupāda called Vrindavaney Bhojan. Well, actually, the poem that I am referring to was a poem that he wrote in a Vas Pūjā to Bhakti Siddhānta Sahtaq, which is more or less addressed to his own God brothers. And of course, I don’t say that I can give the purport, but the basic translation of that was that we shouldn’t imitate Bhakti Siddhānta Sarosvi Thakur by having one Acharya, but we should follow his instructions and work together as a governing body.
So, within ISKCON, Prabhupāda had given us a certain system, that when we need some specific help along the way, that his recommendation or his order was that we should take that from amongst ourselves. Now, sometimes he said, there might be some technical thing, like we came up to him and asked him about making his samadhi. Now, it’s not very tasteful to ask a person, how should I bury you? So to speak? So he could understand that were hesitating to ask him. At the same time, we didn’t have the slightest idea or experience in this regard. So he told us that for this and some other, he can speak to Narayan Maharaj. And then when I had to take, I was also given the order to do a samadhi here in Māyāpur.
Then he also instructed me to see Śrīdhar Maharaj, that he could also help. And I think other devotees. He might have also mentioned that Śrīdhar Maharaj was also a good source for certain informations. At the same time, Śrīla Prabhupāda had given a lot of instructions in different places that sometimes devotees may become.
May.
Receive some instruction from his God brothers, which would bewilder them, which they wouldn’t be able to apply, and somehow would create some kind of disturbance in ISKCON. So that he advised that we could show them respect, but we should thickly associate with them. Was a general rule. Of course there might be exceptions to that. Sure there are, but as a general rule he gave that type of an instruction. The exact reason or purport, of course, is something which could be discussed. But in that regard there were certain kind of a preaching and is counter feeling. I personally saw that at a certain stage in my dear God brothers life, that he had lost kind of faith in us as his reliable servants of our reliable master. Although we had a reliable master, I think he thought we maybe were unreliable servants.
So I saw a basic kind of lack of faith to accept our instruction or advice or association. And at that time, consulting with my other God brothers, I asked whether I might suggest him, that he talk to Śrīdhar Maharaj, as under the circumstances, someone who he might have faith in what he says and may be able to give him some spiritual road guiding or whatever, as you called it. So that in fact is what happened. And I also recommended, I am the, of course, dietary Tomah thanks me for that, and others don’t, whatever. But I was one of the people anyway who recommended. And Sadhayatrita Maharaj came here to Śrīdhar Mirage, and he got some good instruction. I have also received good instruction from Śrīdhar Maharaj at certain occasions.
But ISKCON as a whole, sometimes it’s a fact that they did get confused by instructions which Siddhar Maharaj gave, because he admits himself that he’s different from Śrīla Prabhupda, that he’s not a stereotype, and that he has his own, you know, ideas about devotional life, which are all in more or less in line. It’s very fine points, nothing which is, you know, very drastic. But even on a fine point, sometimes confusion could be. And that kind of confusion was somehow another being created. I don’t think so much really due to Śrīdhar Mirage himself, but due to some of the people that were preaching on behalf of Siddhr Maharaj, or not really on his order, but just self appointed messiahs or something. It was creating some kind of a disturbance in the society.
And so to quell that disturbance, which Jayatuta Goswami knows, it was not amongst the G, B, C as much as amongst these temple presidents and other devotees, we brought up the subject that maybe we shouldn’t go for just a year. And there’s so many things that came up. But unfortunately, we never really got to bring the whole discussion to conclusion with Jayatutha Goswami, because then he left for here, and there was misunderstanding and so many things. But the basic issues that you’re saying about saying Śrīdhar Maharaj, say one man’s food is another man’s poison, that what might be helpful to one person might not be helpful to another.
That prophet had given us some caution that we may not be able to accommodate or adjust all the instructions given by his God brothers, because Prabhupda did some revolutionary things, just like some of Prabhupāda’s God brothers, not Śrīdhar Ma. Someone else used to criticize the Prabhupāda for having women in his temples, and Prabhupāda was very sorry for that. He said that they don’t know that in the west, women are in manner. There’s no difference in terms of their freedom, in terms of their independence and how they act, that if you can’t restrict, that a woman can’t live in the temple, rather, why shouldn’t they be given a chance also to serve Kṛṣṇa? But india, if you notice, just like here, apart from widows, there’s no women living in the temple, and married people live outside.
But in our temples, we have married people, we have women, we have so many systems. So it was a general rule given. No one was singled out either way. That because there were various comments and various, you know, Prabhupāda had been around the world. He had preached Kṛṣṇa consciousness. He had applied things in a certain way, he had established certain systems that someone might say, well, this system is unnecessary or why you’re doing this. And we don’t want to hear that questioning of something that our spiritual master told us to do by someone who’s on that level, who we can’t really discuss that because, you know, it’s a whole different thing.
Just like I am sure you don’t want to hear from someone else other than your spiritual master questioning to you something that your spiritual master told you to do, you would find that, you know, distasteful. And I think that’s, you know, the basic thing, actually, that’s what’s happening. So in the same way, in a more subtle way, some people were feeling that, well, some of the things that were being said were something which was, in a sense, clouding the vision of RLA Prabhupda to some members. And we really, we couldn’t, you know, due to the whole kind of heated situation, we couldn’t come to an actual cool headed solution on the whole thing. Maybe it wasn’t possible at the time, and within the whole turmoil, you know, all these difficulties came up.
But you have to understand at least this much, because it’s a very delicate issue that the G b C for requesting people not to come to Śrīdham Mirage wasn’t doing so just on their own whim. But it was something, you know, not a general just going outside of ISKCON that was felt, that this was the basic desiree in general of Śrīla Prabhupāda, that people should take their instruction within ISKCON, from the ISKCON at sharias, from the G B, C, from Śrīla Prabhupāda’s books, and that there wasn’t anything basically lacking in ISKCON, that one couldn’t become God conscious with this instruction. Now, as far as specific instances where someone might want to discuss on a philosophical basis or get some instruction from Śrīdhar Maharaj, I think we have to accommodate that in the future of Iskconda in a more of a broad aspect.
But at the same time, keeping in mind the basic integrity of ISKCON and the basic supreme position in our society of Shiddha Prabhupda, and we’re heading in that direction. But due to so many misunderstandings, then the thing never, and maybe due to hot feelings and so many things that actually we couldn’t really get to a complete conclusion, it might take a year or two to actually bring everything into a focus. But I request you not to think one hand that just as we don’t think that, I mean, I personally don’t think as an individual that it’s basically wrong. And I tried to express that if Śrīdhar Maharaj’s special relationship with Jayatuta Maharaj continues at the same time, even Śrīdhar Maharaj admitted that to me, just Jayatritha Goswami, in kind of confidence.
I don’t know if I am allowed to say that, but that he also felt that it was something which the general devotees were not ready for it. Mike, he could see how it has caused disturbance. He doesn’t want any disturbance to be caused, but that he would personally like that. Certain devotees, if they do feel the need or they want to come to him, that they may also be allowed to. He requested that. So I try to do my utmost to allow that to happen. It’s a complex issue, but I agree with your basic point. And for that reason, Prabhupāda gave us that we should work amongst our God brothers.
And sometimes also we come to see Sidhar Maharaj and Orion Maharaj or something else, just to check up on some points that should be really amongst the level of the acharyas or the level of the more advanced devotees and the regular kind devotees. They should be developed in the faith to their spiritual masters and to the Śrīla Prabhupāda. Because it’s not that something new is being given. It’s maybe just some clarification or some detail that the basic whole meal, everything is already there by Shila Prabhupāda, including the dessert. And just sometimes just to add a little salt or add a little something, just a little perspective on how to prepare, to give it in a nice way. We get some, also some instruction from senior Weissnavas.
But there was a kind of doubt in some people’s mind that maybe this meant that ISKCON didn’t have the complete meal. We had to go outside, and the GBC didn’t want people to feel that, because it wasn’t true. And I know that Jayatuta goswami, you know, doesn’t want people to feel that either. So then, you know, because of the specific issues and general issues kind of being all lumped together, some people got hurt, and then, you know, that’s just very unfortunate, and I am sure we’re all going to have to suffer for that. So I am going to try to do my best, and I request all of you and Jayatusha Goswami to do their best to try to understand the overall picture as much as necessary, and just to try to bring everything into a more harmonious situation. So there is no offenses.
I mean, yeah, you put me on a really delicate thing. I hope I didn’t offend in our way.
I just thought came the right time. Discussion. I didn’t want to.
I didn’t want to put you on correct.
Objective.
Objective wasn’t injudicious at all, actually. We don’t want to commit any offense. That Sidhar Maharaj, in his own right. I mean, he’s a pure devotee, no doubt. He’s a great vaishnava. It’s just that in terms of ISKCON, there’s so many other instances which came up and the whole thing kind of because they got lumped in together, therefore the mess kind of came about.
We’re always asking them, press not to lump us in with the moonies, but I am just asking that he doesn’t lump Shrita mirage in with.
The others.
Everyone has to be examined on the basis of their own integrity, and that was my request.
Even if we treat it as an exception. Exception makes the rules perfect.
That was my feeling. That was my feeling in the matter, that because I personally had to, I have to work with Cedar Mars. I live in Māyā, for I need some interchange with him, and for I always come to him for some technical.
Points.
Regarding dealing with the other members of the Gauri mission. So I was asking for myself for a leave, and I was also indicating that I felt Jayatirtha Goswami, he should also have that. But.
Yes, sir, Jayapat was not one of the protagonists.
Some people feel strongly, and it’s not. It’s out of their love. I mean, they feel that. Of course I know that. Maybe, you know, jaituth ago feels that it’s underestimating. He feels it’s an underestimation of his own. That therefore was inappropriate. But in another sense, I always thought, well, it was a loving feeling, that they’re trying to protect their God brother from what they thought was a potential or real danger. Just maybe there were more. You can say they’re, say, a fanatic, but it was, in a sense, it was loving. I mean, I saw that there was love there, but maybe everyone couldn’t see the love.
I am very sorry to tell you that in order to protect their love, they have hammered our love. What right had they to hammer our love?
I don’t think they intended, when they were discussing it, that all these things would happen. They didn’t intend that Jayatirthamaraj would leave.
Māyāpur unless these all innocent living entities have the mental anguish. You know, we don’t owe any mental anguish to anybody. We try to have more devotees. And those who are devotees already, you are kicking them out. No, but that is the way you have done. I am sorry. No, you didn’t do it, but you did.
Sorry, but this is just feeling. What are the obstacles now? What are the obstacles now for returning?
We are completely happy. We don’t want anything else except Kṛṣṇa, through him.
Have to report back that there’s a group of fanatics here can be dealt with in the usual way.
No, but I think that categorically you wouldn’t be against with your spiritual master within IskCon, since he says he’d like to, you know, he doesn’t feel that he ever left. And that we discussed yesterday, I think the basic issues, you know, been all more or less solved. But then he says that he thought that maybe some of the disciples were feeling that there were some basic obstacles that even if he were to ask them to take up services, because although he has some plan for doing some preaching with the disciples, was directly under him, but that in general, there might be some basic hesitance or even strong objection to, based on specific things that happened which I don’t know about for working within ISKCON.
And I’d just like to know what, since the things coming up, since I have to express, and since philosophically now you presented your point to me, that maybe practically, what would be the difficulties and what things we have to face? What are the things that would have to change or what would be have to, you know, from your point of view. So that Tirthapa disciples especially, you know, could work again within Iskan as a homogeneous group.
World movement.
We’re all together because the thing is.
That if you might also try and understand. But we feel very. Of course, we’re just near fight, blabbing around, not knowing exactly what we’re doing. So the difficulty. I don’t think that there’s any difficulty. The difficulty is not there. But as long as we fail, because most of us have never had any accommodation, we’re just actually taking this opportunity to at least try and understand our spiritual message. Because most of us have never had that opportunity. And therefore we’re just taking this time to at least try and understand that we should put it more. I don’t think there’s any difficulty.
In London, there’s been certain devotees who have been saying things about our spiritual master that are not very nice. So, although I am not saying that everybody is saying things like this, if went back and worked with these people, I know even now it’s not only.
Me that have heard these things, but.
Others people have not stopped saying these things. So how can we work with people who continue to talk like this? Is it good to hear unpleasant things about one spiritual muslim?
This is.
I feel as if there’s one problem.
I asked that question to England and they, of course, I have to go verify myself. Maybe some of you or some other people can come there.
They were.
Saying that now after the arrived there, Satsuphago, Swami and others arrived there, that basically the offensive statements to stop. Maybe there’s. I don’t know if it’s. Maybe someone else has another story. But I heard anyway that what happened was basically when you were all leaving the temples and, you know, there were. There are some. Some situations that happened where there is some truth in them. Which could cause God brothers to. To lose some faith. And I don’t think it was right. And I agree that the disciples shouldn’t have to hear these things in anything less than, you know, a very loving circumstance. And that you protected yourself from hearing these things is something which is natural. I don’t think that anyone can put any fault in it.
Of course, I just received, you know, I still just received message now that Navanita Chura is sending out tapes or getting ready to send out to doctor Sharma and other people to life members and to that, you know, to try to do like a whole counter offensive or something. And I know that this type of thing will just create that kind of an offensive mentality in the God brothers and in other devotees that they will see that, well, this is Tirithapad’s servant. No, the guru from the disciple. He’s trying to hurt IskCON, while they knew that all along, the tirtipa worked hard to. To develop nice relationships with the life members.
And when they see that, well, maybe this is going to go out into the public, Doctor Sharma, that’s why one of the reasons I came over, just because I was concerned that still he is still there and that trying to bring up a whole, you know, I am trying to like patch the wounds and everything that happened, that if it actually goes out to these indian people, send.
A very strong message, several different sources that don’t assist any such kind of thing. And we also received award when some little devotees came recently that such things weren’t going on.
Maybe they’re paranoid about it, but he’s still there. And they say that, doctor.
That will become like the. I gave the example of Ashwottama delivering the five heads of the sons of Draupadi to Joyodden. But Duyodina, even though he was mischievous in his own way, wasn’t very much appreciative of the atrocious acts of Ashwottama. So although I can’t imagine that namatura is actually like Ashwatam, sweet voice, the comparison of myself, Washington, Driodhana, apt in some circumstances, he’s a much more noble personality than myself. But at any rate, this kind of general phenomenon is there sometimes that the disciples of a particular guru, or even we find, say, in Islam, the disciples of Muhammad, or in Christianity, the disciples of Christ, they do sometimes outrageous things in the name of their spiritual master, in the name of God. And this kind of fanaticism, you know, is general amongst human beings.
But obviously we’re meant to become transcendentalists and voice novelists who don’t have this kind of a limited conception of.
Of the Godhead, but are able to.
Work together within harmonious framework of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. So I certainly hope that all of my disciples always act Kṛṣṇa consciously so that they will properly represent our disciplic succession, and in that way also improve my own standing in the disciplic succession. But because I am not Parmesra, it’s a little difficult always to control their actions. It’s also true Prabhupāda himself. There was a letter written by one lady to Prabhupda some years ago, complaining about some of the actions of Prabhupda’s disciples, especially in terms of trying to get money on the streets and things like that. Poland wrote back saying, please forgive them. They’re very sincere, but they’re young and rash, and therefore they may sometimes do things which aren’t socially acceptable, but that they’re doing out of their love also for Kushma.
So on the one side, we shouldn’t appreciate or indulge in this kind of fanaticism, on the other side, where it appears, I hope that you will forgive my young followers that they don’t. They shouldn’t certainly do such a thing. But it’s also out of their devotion to their spiritual master. And I also feel the same way concerning the activities of my God brothers out of their devotion to Prabhupāda. But in spite of all these things, it’s all out of devotion. But the results haven’t been altogether exceptionally good up to this point in all these things.
So perhaps in general, gave an example about the sons massaging the father, and then they started hitting the father. I want to massage first. Let me first, in our desire to.
Police profile instead, we’re pounding it.
No, especially we should make an absolute rule that nothing should be done to tear down the work that’s been done by any personal. In this case, of course, it’s work that’s also been done by myself. I don’t want my disciples to tear down the work that I have done like an artist painting a canvas. I may have left it half finished for my student to go in and throw black ink over the part that I have already finished.
It’s hardly appropriate.
I feel that there’s not enough personal contact between Śrīla Tirthapad and all the rest of the disciples spread all over the rest of the world. Even if some tetris sent from Śrīla Teddabad, there’s not a feeling of trust unless they’re brought into his personal company. And I think that these things will continue to go on until they are brought in very close association with Shiliti at the bar to understand the. The actual position out of a sense of a protective sense and over defensive measures. But if they came to Śrīlatirabad personally, all of them, at least for a matter of a week or something, as we have all done, then the picture would become clear for everybody. As long as they’re separated by any kind of distance, geographical distance, there’s going to be difficulties continuing, I think, because they feel that.
They feel like there’s two camps where it’s actually, we understand that we are always one family. And these difficulties have to be resolved. As long as they’re over there, they’re thinking that there’s two sides still.
Also. Navanita, the whole feeling when were all together in England was that we saw that a lot of our God brothers of faith had actually been turned against Peter Page. So we immediately thought, well, these were. These are God brothers and we can see it. Who is it that’s actually turned to faith? You know. So ultimately, you know, it was.
The.
GVC that moved in, you know, and got all the disciples, you know. And also, just like if you were a funeral, you know, somewhat the person still living, but all the family’s around and he’s not left his body, but he’s thinking, well, I will have that, I will have his hangman, I will have this, I will have his briefcase, and I will have so many different parts. So theatre pad, we got a tape from him saying, I don’t want to leave escort. I don’t want to leave prophets movement. But already we can see, just with us being here in South Africa and different places.
There was a rumor that there was no initiation there.
A lot of mud slinging was there. And not only verbal, but on paper also. And because of that, there is bound to be reaction from the other sign. And that mudslinging, as you told it, might have stopped now, but as our dearest spiritual master, once we had, he had told us that these bad words, they remain in the ether for a long time. And not only they remain there, but they pollute the clouds. The water is polluted and eventually the corn which grows because of that rainfall, is also polluted. And the whole atmosphere is polluted. So it will go on for a long time. Unnecessary.
To purify it with hare kirta.
And then the rain clouds all the rain comes down, so then after the rain the air is very clean.
You.
Know, obviously there’s some God brothers who are, you know, not at all acting maturely and then, you know, if there’s any reason that they have, which is not unbona fide, if they have any reason for doubting chuttapods in any way, I don’t think that it’s up, you know, it’s my position to say that to you. I mean that chitopod can say whether his God brothers have any reason at all for doubting him.
I have stated very clearly that I feel that the godfathers have got very good reason to doubt and that I don’t want them therefore to be put in a position where they have to work on my behalf in order to enlist new Mendez. I think that would be the most normal, healthy situation for some time, at least until, you know, these wounds can gradually heal because it takes a lot of surrender and faith to spend your.
Whole life working to bring disciples to a certain person.
And I know that isn’t there in some of the God brothers with good reason, I don’t blame them for that. Even before coming to Māyāpur I discussed with a number of them this point and I had offered even as late as last July where he nodded to testify that if the God brothers in England wanted to work for another charger then we could bring in a second charger. And I even suggested in the future some of them may also be at charges. I suggested that different temple presidents in different temples when they were God brothers like Rancho or others could choose their charity they wanted to work for. So I feel very strongly that the God brothers shouldn’t have to work on my behalf to enlist new men.
And I think the problem that’s been brought up by some of the men here is that they brought it up to me as well. They have a difficult time also because your particular authority in a temple has to be seen as a representative of your spiritual master. That’s the way our philosophy works in the temple president, you follow him because he’s the representative of your spiritual master and he should be of course transparent as far as possible to the orders of your spiritual master and also he should be in a position to help you increase your faith in your spiritual master. So I think some of them feel that it would be difficult to work at least under certain God brothers because they may not feel that they would have that kind of transparent connection.
And therefore I made this suggestion yesterday that if some kind of arrangement could be worked out. So at least those disciples who were inclined in that way.
Amongst themselves, at least in their regular everyday activities. And then, of course, the hope of all of us that we will be able to come together with all of the rest of the family members, as the general case is that a man may live with his own family, but then there are regularly occasions when this family get togethers and the other old brothers come together with their children.
