The following is a lecture given by His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami Mahārāja on April 24, 1982 – in New Talavan, USA. The lecture begins with a reading from Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 4.30.48.

Following the order of Lord Rampant, the girl as their wife in the room of this girl, the son of Ramaha and induction had to take birth in the room of Maheshah due to disobeying disrespecting Shiva. Therefore, in a previous birth he was a Brāhmaṇa. But because of his behaving like a non Brāhmaṇa Brahman, by insulting or disrespecting gurd Mahadeva, he had to take birth within the semen of a chatkiya. That is to say, he became the son of the vichytas. Not only that, but because of disrespecting mashiva, he had to undergo the tribulation of taking birth within the womb of Allah in the daksha Dajna, he was once killed by Lord Sivas servant d.

Ragnae. Because that was not sufficient, he again took birth in the womb of Mahati Shah at the end of the Daksha Yagya, the disastrous incident. There Daksha offered his prayer to Lord Shiva. Although he had to give up his body and take birth in the womb of a woman and breaking her by the semen of the judgment, he nonetheless received all utterance by the grace of Lord Shiva. These are the subtle laws of material nature. Unfortunately, people in this modern age do not know how these laws are working, having no knowledge of the eternity of the spirit soul and its transmigration. The population of the present age is in the greatest ignorance. Because of this, it is said in Bhāgavatam the total population. This age of Kali was very bad, late, fortunate and disturbed by material condition.

So there are several things we can learn from this. Originally daksha was a Manas Putra Brahma. Manas putra means he didnt have to be born to ordinary method in the womb of a mother, but sensed by the mental desire of Brahma, Vashti was created. So these mental sons of Brahma are considered to be even more powerful than the grave demigods like indigenous associates. But although he was so powerful, just like in fact Shiva himself was imam scripture Shiva incarnation of gathering Vaishnava. So Dakshara, he became very affected towards Lord Shiva even though he was the hashem and because of all that disrespect he was killed by Birabhadra. And this means that not only was he once killed by Birobadza, but now again once you were born, then you also have to die.

So now he’s again being born, and again he will have to die. Because the voice of eternal nature, this time he’s born a woman of a woman. And to be born in this way, of course, is quite unpleasant because one is in the womb and at least for the last couple of months, one is conscious and it’s quite late painful way of coming into this world regularly. That in the sense he didn’t have to come into that very painful and undesirable way. Because of his offenses to great devotees, he lost his good fortune to the extent that he had to come again and be born in an ordinary way, which was for production for them. But on the other hand, because he has offered his prayer to Lord Shiva awarded him with all kinds of material optimism.

Lord Shiva is able to award one all type of imperial optimism. Vatsiva also as a vaishnav, was able to bless one to advance spiritually. Lakshad wasn’t requesting that. So Vatsiva simply after again taking birth in this way, gave him a special blessing that he could again gain so much happiness. All it happens to reincarnation of the soul for the transmigration of the soul. The soul is eternal. Comments here that the population of the present day is in the greatest ignorance of this because they don’t know that there’s eternal. They are the eternal soul that it transmigrates. They think everything is finished in this one life. Therefore, the Bible comes 5000 years ago. Describes him as Manda Sumanda matayo. Manda Bhagirath means that Sumanda matayu means naturally there is bad. Manda is bad and suman is very bad mentally, very lazy.

Mother viable, unfortunate people are. Fortune is worse than bad. Someone wants to do something and needs a good fortune. But instead of the way it needs some disturbances, one wants to be successful in life. Very few people actually achieve their desire to the extent they want the whole world. America is considered to be more fortunate materially. So many people around the world would like to come and live in America. In fact, most of the world doesn’t even have any good fortune. But even the Americans, although they are the most fortunate, possibly one of the most fortunate people in the world, they’re having recessions, they’re having so many problems. It means that even they are having to face so many anxieties. That means unfortunate in so many ways. People want to give them. The most powerful nation has to encounter so many anxiety.

You can imagine what it’s like in another place. So other things. Upadruta. Upadruta means disturbed people are all disturbed, not peaceful in my life. So in this way, the Kali Yuga people, the people of this age, I have got a lot of problems. And the root cause is that they don’t have any knowledge of the eternity of the soul, more of its transmigration, more of what they should do in terms of their eternal position. So as a result, although they’re a human being, even very, they consolidate. Professors, they tell doctors they’re acting just on a temporary basis, that this is it, that they want to live. And when they die, that’s fitness. Or even if they’re acting in some religious sentiment that they’re going to have a future life.

Their conception of that is so unscientific in terms of really what is going to happen that they can hardly relate to it, know what other laws of nature, what by doing, what activity they will get, what type of results. So they act, thinking that, well, I am doing very well, living good life, living according to the society’s norms, while in fact they’re acting in such a way as to get themselves into more and more conditions of inter. So this is not unusual. If you look at history, you will find that so many times in history, people became very materialistic, they became very misled. Even when there are existing religions in the world, just like when Lord Jesus came, people were Romans were following some kind of demi God worship.

And I, the Jews were well established, and Jerusalem in Israel, the Lord Jesus went into the temples instead, threw out all of the merchants who were selling their goods and the temple, said they would find the house of my father. And then he gave so many instructions on what was the purpose of life. Then he told his followers that I left more to tell you about my father’s kingdom, that you can’t even understand what I am telling you about this kingdom. What can I tell you about the spiritual kingdom? So this reformation. And at that time, people, of course, they mistook Jesus Christ. The Jews became so upset that he was preaching into the doctrine that they approached the roman government in killing. Not only killing, but they publicly humiliated to string him up on a cross and then don’t even feed him.

Just to put this in every possible way, at least this. And the roman ruler was a conscious character. He washed his hands and all things. This is all done by the jewish priest. So similarly, people have become very materialistic. They have in the basement, they got the rock and roll, which has got nothing to do with Jesus. And Jesus rock and roll would be one thing, but it’s just more rock and roll. Something that can think just to try to keep the people silent. Church. But without any real spiritual understanding about their spiritual life. When I was in Quito, Ecuador, I saw a picture in a christian church of the last call in the judgment day. And it blew on the bugle, and it showed all the skeletons falling out of the graves.

And it showed as the skeletons are falling out of the grave, there was half of the skull, whereas the hypothal skeleton. And then from that, and then as they were calling out, then gradually the flesh would come back on the skeletons in different stages. And then they would all march. And then the bishop was telling one to go to heaven and one to go to purgatory, where they’re in the purgatory. They showed everybody under that, but their concept was that at the judgment day, you come out of the grave and all your bones, which are this dust, all the flesh comes back out and then you can. Again, some people enjoy it. So basically, bringing this up is people don’t have. I mean, they see all these things. They don’t have any spiritual.

Their conception, even our resurrection, is that we get a body back. Everything is based on this body. But actually we’re not. The body is a machine. If we’re in this world, we need the body. When we go back to God, we don’t do this material. Why would God have such a temporary and unfortunate type of body in the spiritual world? But people are very. And therefore it’s unfortunate. So in this modern day, this need for scientific understanding of what is life, scientific understanding of how we are, then people can become happy. But it doesn’t happen overnight. I mean, even though Jesus was strung up on the cross, it didn’t happen that Christianity 400 years afterwards, as far as I know, I apparently didn’t really take all. They were living in caves.

They were living underground for hundreds of years until Constantinople agreed to accept Christianity. At that time, there was some deal that they would edit the Bible according to his political necessity. And so they decided that the letter of two evils, if he came to become a Christian, he lose half the Bible. They chopped down the Bible, acquired the psalm upon it was previously it was reincarnation. It was vegetarianism taken out. Today we have a Bible written by the apostles and edited by so the people, they don’t know what the original teachings were. They don’t know what at least the Christians and the. At the same time in the world today, there’s so much challenge. The Bible says there was creation. Scientists say, no, there wasn’t creation cases going on in court all the time. The Vedas also say there’s creation.

But it gives a much more detailed description. The prophet said that we should not challenge the creation, a non creation, that we should come in from another angle, because to prove that creation is quite difficult since it’s some millions of years ago, the prophets said we should rather challenge that. They say that this body and that the body simply doesn’t have any spirit. We should challenge that the source of this body is actually that the life source is the anti material, pivotal this way. We’re not expecting that. We’re not expecting that from that angle. If we approach it as the nature of the soul being spiritual or of consciousness and that the body is unconscious, so we can make great habits. But I don’t know why scientists are doing in this regard. That was the specific advice that she was qualified.

He wanted court cases and other things follow up with his material, making court cases in that regard. Physically, existence of spirit, the existence of a supreme spirit, that’s the distance thing which would be higher, which will be the next step. But first let’s accept that there’s existence in spirit, which apparently is scientifically easier to establish because there’s no explanation to the ultimate issue. In any case, common people, they’re just following whatever the media, whatever the television, whatever the conditioning that they have achieved. So Caitanya’s movement even india was considered to be revolutionary. It was considered to because india there was a caste system. There were so many difficulties with Lord Caitanya. He accepted people from all the different castes. In fact, even one muhammadan. He made us the acharya and guru of the holy name which shocked many people.

In fact, Lord Jaitan was associate on Vaita Prabhup. He was observing the death anniversary of his father. So it’s common india that on death anniversary of your father, you offer a prashana called Srad. You offer a prasharam to Kṛṣṇa and then give that Krishan to your father for his departed soul so that whoever they may be, he will get the benefit of taking prashad. So in that ceremony, the first prashad is offered to any great devotee prison. So that way the Prashanthriven is Mahā Prashant. So that time there were so many Brahmans present for this particular sacrifice, so many people. But instead offering those same people, he offered for the great devotee Harida is Taqwa in the first place, and some of the Brahman is Harida as taqwa. He was born as a Muhammad. We’re born as Brāhmaṇa. So they had a bodily idea.

We’re born as a Brāhmaṇa, therefore we’re pure, and he’s born as a Muhammad and therefore relatively should be unpure, therefore why is he getting him? So they made a few brambles in the challenge and then Advaita Acharya, he countered that he’s a pure devotee, therefore, because he’s chanting, because he’s practicing, his body is purest. You may be born pure, but that purity is not as pure as one who actually becomes a physical being, christian, spiritual. So then, still there was some disadvantageous satisfaction because they didn’t have faith in Kṛṣṇa. The altitude didn’t have that much faith. This happened to us in south India. We went by the sense they went on a temple several years ago, only ten years ago. In the beginning it was difficult because they said, well, you’re one of the foreign countries.

And after you tell me in your knowledge that before you leave so many complaints that verdict on Saddam Hussein made the chief of Swami asking that, which is more powerful, the contaminating effect of eating kalmi to my previous life or the effect of chanting Haru fishing, which is more powerful? The power to contaminate because I eat meat or the power to purify the holy name? What is more powerful, Kṛṣṇa or me? But so everywhere in the world people are body hunting. It’s not only in America, maybe india they’re body conscious that they think that an american person, he’s a meat eater, he’s a dirty person, even. He may be a wealthy country, but he’s untouchable. The American may think, well, this guy lives in a grasshouse aboriginal that probably has only diseases, untouchable. So this, everybody’s, you know, envious of everyone else.

And maybe there’s one person thinks that other person’s good or bad and they’re all on the basis of the body. Conservative body consciousness, negative body consciousness and liberal body consciousness. It’s all out of dense. So they also had the same similar kind 500 years ago. Hari Das Karpov he was being accused that your body, ordinarily someone’s born in a particular place is conditioned to that. One can’t change that very easily. Just like if one’s born in one part of town and basically usually he’s one of the one part of a little rough area by the railroad track and he just went back there after ten years, reaching Indiana places. And then he found that the same guys that were in the same game, it was real rough voters. And when they left, the kids and the same guys that they’re.

They’re all the 30 years old, they’re 40 years old, and they’re doing the same things, you know, although they got a job, but they still, you know, going to the same bar, doing the same nonsense, whatever. All kinds of bad habits. After 20, after ten years, they haven’t changed. But he’s been all over the world. He’s devoted, he’s preaching completely different, but they’re, like, just locked in to the same kind of prejudice, the same kind of conditioning, same kind of naive that they were practically, since they were born. So being born, ordinarily, there is a little bit of validity that when a person is born somewhere, generally speaking, that conditioning is so strong, it’s very hard to get out of it.

The exception is that if someone actually becomes Kṛṣṇa conscious, they actually become God conscious, then whatever their conditioning is, they can transcend it. And the mercy of great devotees, one can also transcend. Even though Daksha has to take this birth again because he’s got the mercy of Bathsheba, because he did apologize, he did request for mercy, although by the laws of his offenses, he had to accept this rebirth. At the same time, he was given all the opulence by the grace of Lord Sheba. That means that sometimes we may commit some activity where we won’t be able to escape the reaction. We have to accept the reaction. But if we somehow undergo the mercy of Kṛṣṇa is devoting, even we have to accept that reaction. Somehow we will be able to achieve our desired result. That’s your result. You got his optimism.

Another case, Chichar Ketu was a great king. He was cursed by Lord Śiva’s wife to take birth as a demon because he just made some slight transgression of Lord Shiva’s respect, but because he has actually no offensive mentality. Offensive. And he was a devotee. Although he had to take birth as a demon, when he was killed, he got liberation, birth to death. So these laws of material nature, so strong that if one trance blesses them, it cannot escape. But if one has a blessing, one returns to a spiritual position. This is the exception, is that if one, however, in this lifetime, surrenders to Kṛṣṇa, then Kṛṣṇa says, I protect you from all these narratives. If you actually surrender unto me, Kṛṣṇa, then I will protect you from all of these reactions and you will combat.

So, in other words, these laws of harm are so stringent that no one can escape them. Just like there may be some prisons which have so high security no one can escape. But if the president of the country right you a part of it, then you’re gone, you’re out of that prison. Doesn’t matter how great the prison is, if the president, that’s it. So in the same way, Kṛṣṇa’s ultimate authority, as long as we are remaining in our separate mentality from God, then we have to suffer our entire question to our activities according to our condition. It’s very hard to get out of that. The only way we get out is when we die, when we take another birth.

And that time we suddenly change our condition with the better for the worse, more or less as we’re born, unless we have some special kind of karma, we more or less stay in that condition. The only exception is if some lovely comes and somehow gives us the mercy. Somehow we are able to understand a little bit about our spiritual life, then our relationship with Kṛṣṇa, with God, then everything can change. Because then to that extent, we are free from this law of karma. Jesus said yesterday that even the demigods, they can only give their mercy according to the way that one worships them. Give more or less. But Kṛṣṇa devotees, they can give because they personally desire even an unfortunate person. Out of their own desire, they pray, may this soul become Kṛṣṇa conscious.

May this soul become delivered by their prayers, by their desire, Kṛṣṇa delivers them. So that person, he may not have done much, but just by causeless mercy or some great devotion, he’s able to repent this way. The three types of perfection Sadhana city means one, his own desires. There is practice, the rules and regulations, and step by step is advancing. Second is called Tripa siddhi, or by the mercy of some great devotees, someone advances. And the third is nitya Siddhi. The one is born already advanced spiritually. Here we see that daksha, although not a devotee, but in a sense he is being born materially through Pacific. He’s being born because he’s already got the blessing of what she like. It’s all obvious. So some people are born like that spiritually. They had one birth to go.

Or they have already born with a specific purpose of spreading the unconsciousness. So they’re born as an exhibit. That means they’re born with so many qualities of devotion already there. They didn’t have to have so many types of reformation. One of these, if you see the devotees, was of course, Harry daft. But he took birth in a Mahabharam family, just to show people that no matter what family one’s born, one is devoted, should be respected. So he told the other brahmanas that Abramana is supposed to light. Or maybe it was a great nonsense that a Brāhmaṇa is supposed to be able to ignite fire just by repeating the mantra. If you want to be strictly saying that type of Brāhmaṇa who’s by birth a Brāhmaṇa, he has the power. If he reduce certain mantras, he can ignite fire.

So I’d like to try took to every ravana a pile of wood. I said, all right, light it. Of course, although they were claiming to be providence by birth, when it came to saying the mosque, nothing happened. One day is smiling, then they were all muffling and puffing, but they did nothing to reflect it a little bit. When he took it to Haridas Takur, and by the nurse of Kṛṣṇa, he gave the mansion blew, ignited on fire hair and Haridas Taku is getting the first shadow. So in this kali yuga, it’s not that only the people of America, South America, Europe or everywhere, including India, people have become more and more materialists, relatively. Maybe some places are worse than others, but from the actual pure spiritual standard, every place has got plenty of problems.

And the solution, of course, is that people have to become spiritually conscious. They have to become Kṛṣṇa conscious, they have to become God conscious. And to do that, to make people and to encourage people to understand the spiritual life is one of the most difficult things to do because of the conditioning and illusion of the one. Again, they don’t have any desire for that. They don’t have any conception of it. But this is also something which is very predictable. Notice that if one 10th of the 1% of the population became Kanthis, that would change the whole world, that would change our population. This is such a rare and powerful thing that even one 10th of 1% of the population could become Kṛṣṇa conscious.

That effect would be so powerful that it would change the whole population and not create an atmosphere in the world which is favorable. Because at the present time, we just say that just like the Hare Kṛṣṇa movement, how many Hare Kṛṣṇa developed, although there may be millions and millions of followers. But everybody knows about the Harlequin speaking. And all over the world. There was one time in Calcutta when he. He was like being a little humble. And this pastor general, he became a little indignant. But someone was challenging his point. And so then in a very strong voice, he said, you guys maybe. Damn. Although we’re a few people. Soviet Union says that the two main words that God are pop music and hard. That’s another two KG leader to get a certificate like that. That’s pretty good.

Considering how much pop music is going in the world. How much pop music is sending over the airways. And how many high christian middle ages you got teaching in lunch. They’re worried about us and gave us the number two ratings. Because we are Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa is the most powerful. And the devotees represent Kṛṣṇa. Some people think, well, this is a passing fad. Or they were thinking that for year after year, and they’re still here. We’re going to continue preaching Kṛṣṇa consciousness. And although you will see so many things come and go. The list is coming and gradually increase. Because people are dedicated. Because they actually receive something which you don’t lose. This is the way every spiritual movement in the world gets started. India, they know it was predicted that Kṛṣṇa consciousness is all over the world.

Their Kṛṣṇa consciousness is going over the whole world. They take it as already this time. But now this means that the tradition is going to go the rest of the world. It’s going to go to every. In every kind of business throughout the whole world. My movement will be spread. This champion of Hare Kṛṣṇa will be spread. So that is happening step by step. But sometimes we’re concerned that so many people don’t understand. They don’t understand. I don’t understand. But it’s not actually a valid doubt. Because the general population, they always just follow certain paths. Or they follow certain norms. And certain types of people that are a little more forced, a little more intelligent. They may not think themselves more intelligent. It may seem to them very simple and common sense situation. But for some reason another.

They do have some ability to seek things as they are more clearly than their neighbor. And so they take it out, dad. And if you, their neighbor may also be able to see. It just happens. When asked to mention somebody’s false church, do you think the Bible says many are called true choices. There’s a question of fortune. Some people are called first. Some people understand. Earlier the jailblazers. Some people came Mississippi before others, Daniel Boone or Baby Crockett or whatever. Does that mean because somebody came here first. Nobody should come after. And some people come first. And then some people suffer. That’s the way it is to spiritual life. There’s some people that understand before others. Why everyone doesn’t understand at the same time, it’s not a valid question. It just doesn’t happen that way. Why didn’t everybody. Why didn’t they inhabit?

Why didn’t they have it in Mississippi before they. But people think that they’re very proud. One man was telling me out of the airplane. So one thing I understand is that America has only been around for 200 years. 1496, heading for India. He was looking for a short trade into India. That’s where the bowl and spices, everything went. With the indian affluence, the British Empire was able to expand overtime. So now you’re seeing India at the present time. It’s not there. What was America 200 years ago? What was America flying if it wasn’t even on the map? You’re talking about a country that had no. So it’s gone through different places now. It’s in the material downplay if America doesn’t stop its program. So the brother said we should try to save the country from just destroying themselves. By that happens.

People right now, they’re a little more receptive because of the recession. They will be more receptive. Sometimes it even takes misery to make people become more sensitive to whatever it takes. Kṛṣṇa will do it. We have to individually try ourselves to be Kansas to do what Bhagavad has done to establish our Kṛṣṇa consciousness and the directions that we gave. One other thing so that in case there isn’t any national calamity situation which would happen in New York City when they were 24 hours loach and all the people just became wild and started ragging all the stars, breaking the cell wall, molesting so many of the people. Practically, it was worse than in general, just because of lights. So you get very heavy once. If there’s a little bit of police inactivity that people take advantage of just because they have so many unconscious desires.

We’re dealing with the people. Chandhri, Kṛṣṇa. Then from the very root they desire to. And more and more people are tennis. When they took the Gallup home in America, over half a million kids five years ago. Practice of failure increase our preaching people by doing that. Then all these things are reversed. The first thing is gone. Even the movements that are in America today, so many spiritual movements. It shows that this is a presence of desired spirituality, that there’s a basic interest and interest in the spiritual life, this incompleteness is meant not to make slow and askable at the cost of compromising. We’re not allowed to compromise. We have to keep very strict, even if we only get one 10th or 1% of the population. Because that will be the standard for which other people will hinder.

You have to have, just like if you don’t have somewhere, the clock that breaks on time, exactly on times, just like in general, we got the atomic clock which every second chimes off if someone doesn’t have it, then where do you set your watch? You gotta tell your watch yourself. Everybody will be about three minutes this way, that way, five minutes. So the standard is christian consciousness. This is the highest standard humanity is accepted. This is the highest spiritual standard of activity. So we have to try ourselves and we have to try maintain this standard. That way, comparatively, everyone that may be five benefits at least will be the standard that they can see, they can shoot for it and they can compare with we to accommodate more and more people and change our standard. Then that means, and that’s not good.

And there will be people in every place. Maybe not every man woman in town would be if you’re devoted. But there will be people in every place who will be carrying NH in every place. There will be some going to be fully practicing and they will be important to some. Just like how many people actually practice with Canada? If you take that, the priest himself is practicing once a week and that means you have got one pastor or one priest for one parish and you have got some. So we’re in a color, we have to take our priority, we have to understand what we will do. Every person has to lead his own life. We can’t lead our life based upon what other people think. Based upon what the. Just like Paula gave the example, 1000 acids, all graves.

Why would you take that as an applause? Similarly, people get very happy if they get an applause. But that applause, if it’s not qualified, if it’s just an applause of some sentiment, what’s the value? But if Kṛṣṇa, if he says, oh, if the supreme personality guided us, again, I appreciate that. Similarly, we have to analyze what we’re doing with our life, where we’re headed for ourselves, whether some third party can understand or not, then will that make any progress? When will this be one of the unfortunate people in the mess? We have to analyze for ourselves what is the actual fact? What is the purpose of life? Who are we? How do we, what should we do with our life? Just like they have those little, not that we should blindly follow. We don’t want to blindly follow. Good.

We don’t want anyone to blindly follow materialism. No one should blindly follow anything. One should use his intelligence and understand what the purpose is, life is, understand how this world is made up and what is actually his duty, and then act accordingly. That’s not blind. People are blindly following materialism. They don’t question it. They don’t think that there’s anything beyond his mind. They don’t question it. They have gone blind and they have been rammed down their head, television, on the radio or every magazine, everywhere. They hear this body, enjoy it. It’s very economically good. People think that about it, and this is it, and they just enjoy it. It’s very good for the market. Imagine what’s going to happen to half of the american whiskey cigarette. So many other different kinds of Disney worlds that don’t have spiritual things.

When people become more and more spiritually conscious. So the very big material is they don’t want people to become more God conscious. They want to become more virtuous, live a simpler life, because there won’t be that much need for all kind of factories, manufacturing, drivers. There’s nobody needs anyway, except for giving them a little sense character. People were dialectically opposed to what so many parts of this culture stand for. We would only want to have them that were absolutely necessary for defense, for transportation of essential commodities and things like that. Simply wasteland the energy of human life. People can work a little less and spend a little more time spiritually. What’s the use of it after so many years? There’s so much advancement. You still have to work so many days and so many hours in a week.

And whatever feed time you get, you just spend it watching television. Again dropped. And then they’re financing. They can get a lower work week, less hours for what? They can have more time to drink the sleep. What’s the use? And they actually require the veiling system is you only work one fourth of the time. You only need to work 6 hours a day, one fourth of your time. You work 6 hours a day and you spend 6 hours a day in spiritually, 6 hours a day.
