The following is a lecture given by His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami Mahārāja on April 22, 1982 – in Bogotá, Colombia. The lecture begins with a reading from Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 1.18.11.

And also in Jagannath Purī you can see the Siddha Bokul where Haridas Thakur.

Chanted in Jagannath Purī ustepuer el Sida bokul.

The tree is 500 years old. And you can see the place where Lord Caitanya placed Haridas Thakur in Samadhi and burial. Just by the side of the ocean we have the Batikuti temple of Bhaktivinotakur which is just across the street from.

Haridas El Bhakti Kuti.

This is just recently.

This is muy ricien.

This is not thousands of years ago.

This is only isn’t no ace emilis de anos 500 years ago ACE quinimitos.

Everything is still there. Everyone knows these histories. Even the family members of these people are still living.

Hollos mimbros and de las familias de estes Personas.

13Th generation family members are still present in Santipur.

Los familiares de huerte goneracion estan viviendo and Shantipur.

And they are giving us land at the house of Santipur to build a guest house for the devotees to visit.

In Santipor. In the house of.

That’s where his house of.

Para visitares lugaves.

All the places are still there. Everyone knows about these things. Nothing is mysterious.

No way. Mysterious.

You’re very fortunate. You have just come just after Lord Chaitanya.

It is muye fortunaro.

Movement would for 200. For 200 years would become very dormant. That was predicted by Nitinanda Prabhu 500 years ago.

For dosientos anos fuericho que el mubiento de seno de itana.

And he also predicted that thereafter the movement would reappear and that there would be a grand temple constructed at Māyāpur which would spread which would establish the message of Lord Caitanya all over the world.

El muviento de Sanquetan puertoros lados de la tierra.

Which is what Rla Prabhupāda has told the society to do is build the biggest temple for Lord Chaitanya at Māyāpur.

Yes, Prabhupāda nos amandado. Consider el templomas grande in Māyāpur desenu Caitan.

And many other predictions are all.

Being fulfilled by Sila Prabhupāda. What’s more or less the age of Hare Kṛṣṇa in relation with the age of the movement of Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ predicted that the world spirituality would be established in the world by people wearing the name of God on their forehead.

So he has predicted the coming of.

This Hare Kṛṣṇa movement and the people wearing the white name of God on the forehead.

El mundo salvado.

And he said that those who would try to cause destruction of the world have had the blood of the cow on their forehead. Lord Chaitanya said anyone not wearing tilak, he considered his forehead to be a slaughterhouse. So this Lord Caitania’s movement is the fulfillment of the prediction of the New Testament. There are some religious authorities india who consider to be something like the second coming of Jesus. But we consider, of course, that Lord Caitanya is actually the Father Himself. Coming in a form as a devotee. While Jesus was his son.

Jesus heiress to iho his great devotee to Grand Devoto. What’s the oldest Christian conscience is older or Christianity is older.

So in that sense we’re much newer. This is updated.

Modernizado thing.

But the roots, these teachings are the same teachings which are dated back over 5,000 years ago, which is far earlier than Christianity.

The los raises de eses inseniences son rechara maste cinco Milanos local represent muy antes.

Has given some new practical methods which are suitable for the present modern day age.

Practicos for la evegan moderna.

Knowing that the times had changed, he recommended that more important than visiting the temples and the churches was to daily chant the holy name of Kṛṣṇa and serve wherever one is.

He wants to know where Buddha fits in.

Buddha?

No, what is right? Where do we put Buddha? In the scheme of things, Buddha is an incarnation of Kṛṣṇa which was predicted in the Vedas.

But he was not a full incarnation. He was an empowered incarnation.

Una incarnacion in poderada.

And he had a special purpose of.

Establishing non violence. And people were, in the name of religion, were misusing the teachings.

La gente en elome de villegion estaba mal usando las enceniences.

So Kṛṣṇa in the form of Buddha tricked these people into following him by an indirect method.

Entomose Kṛṣṇa in la forma de Buddha. Los isun tramp les is un trampo parake lo sigi en ayel.

We have our temple in Thailand, which is Buddhist country. They appreciate Kṛṣṇa very much. This is a Buddhist blessing.

In Thai language it says Buddhista in La Lengua, Thailand. If Haridas was a Muslim, then how did he become a devotee of Kṛṣṇa?

Because there are so many sectarian religions in the world. Like Muslim, Christian, Buddha, Hindu, Jewish.

Buddhism, Christianismo, Muslimismo, Muslim.

But the practice of chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa is beyond all Sectarian restrictions. Here you see that Kṛṣṇa says, abandon all varieties of religion, just surrender unto me. That the highest religion is ultimately to surrender and love God. Although there are so many processes for leading material life and respecting God. But when one actually surrenders and loves God, that is the transcendental pleasure.

Al punto de renders de todo. Adios estes la perfection de village.

So this chanting of Hare Kṛṣṇa is.

For the postgraduate stage.

It’s the kantar de Hare Kṛṣṇa is in post graduate.

A person can be a Muslim or a Christian or a Buddhist or Jewish, doesn’t matter. Anyone can chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. This is postgraduate. There’s no contradiction.

Puede que une Persona se cristiano Muslim, Hindu, Julio, no importe estes post gradual mundo de cantar.

Those people who only want to see whether you use the same name. Yes, I am Christian, yes I am Muslim. They don’t care what you do. You can be a murderer, you can be anything. But you just say, I am Christian, I am Muslim, I am Jew. Those who want to see that, you see those are very narrow minded people. So those type of people initially always object when they say people czien Hare Kṛṣṇa.

Hare Kṛṣṇa.

They don’t inquire what is the actual philosophy, what is the purpose, what is the relation, Is there any contradiction? But when by the association of the devotee they can understand, they see that there’s no contradiction. This is actually what every religion tells one to do. And the ultimate perfectional stage, Lord Caitanya convinced the cardinal of the Muslim religion india that actually Kṛṣṇa consciousness, Hare Kṛṣṇa chanting fulfilled the Muslim religion. And the cardinal himself chanted Hare Kṛṣṇa.

Yeah, Cardinal mismo cantaba Hare Kṛṣṇa, he.

Was known as the Qazi. So there’s no restriction for anyone from whatever religion to take part in this practice of bhakti yoga or devotional service.

No restriction. Is ninguna KWA quera Persona non porta que se.

And now there’s no longer the Inquisition, no longer the Muslim torturers. Now anyone can participate according to their conscience and belief.

No, those people la gente que dan las torturas verdugos. No hai verdugos Muslims.

So now the people of the different religions, they are understanding that what Kṛṣṇa consciousness has to offer helps all the religions. For those who have the intelligence to understand the philosophy and the desire to reach the perfection of stage.

Okay, Kiruta.

Here the sages are blessing. These sages had assembled in Naima to perform a great sacrifice. But when they tried to light sacrificial fires had already begun. Those sacrificial fires failed. Then they came to the conclusion that in the Kali Yuga the prescribed process.

Was hari kīrtana la conclusion.

It also mentions.

That this Kali Yuga is an ocean of defects.

They defect us.

But there’s one good quality.

Estes Kṛṣṇa kīrtana mukta sangha parang baja by which.

One can be liberated from the material association and reach the supreme destination.

Material y e gar al destino espiritual.

So the sages decided we want to hear about Kṛṣṇa, about the pastimes of the Lord.

Tonce los savios desideron chaos kirien escuchar de los paste tempos del senor. In his different incarnation, avatars, insu differentes incarnaciones y avatars.

And in his personal form. So Roma Har was established on the.

Vyāsa sara In tone, says Roma Harsana estaba establishment to speak about the topics of Kṛṣṇa. Podablar de los temas de Kṛṣṇa.

When he appeared in the assembly, he felt offended because Roma Hashina did not stand up to greet him.

Fedocando Balaram aperecio en la semblea el sendido de biro Roma Harzana no se paro para recibirlo.

Normally, the president of a samha or the head of an assembly, sitting under the asus salah, would not get up to greet ordinary guests. But Balaram is the God himself. He is not ordinary.

Nom nomente el jefe de la que esta centado en habias non desita ale ventarse or parartes pararse pararec. Pero Śrī Balaram noere un invitado, un hombre ordinarios mismo.

The guru is representative of God.

El guru is representante de rios.

So naturally the disciples they will first.

Respect the guru Natro.

But if God himself comes, the Guru will respect him. But Roma Harshana failed to respect Balaram.

Pero Romaharana fracas de respeter at Śrī Balaram.

So Balaram touched him with a pisa, with a blade of kusa grass and took his life. The sages were very upset. They had lost their guru who was to instruct them on the.

But.

They could not object very strongly because after all, Balaram is independent to do what he likes. But they requested that you please make an arrangement that we may hear Goswami, the son of Ramaharshana on the elevated seat of Bias Hasan and Roma Harshana son sutagoswami. He spoke the pastimes of Kṛṣṇa of the different incarnations so beautifully that here you can see how they are praising his description. In each age is a particular religion.

In cara epica a processo especifico de la religion.

(Side B of the Cassette)

Sometimes the jewels or gold is even stolen. So it’s very difficult to maintain a high temple worship standard in this present age. So in the Kali Yug, the principle is to glorify Kṛṣṇa in tonsils.

In El Kali Yuga, el principio is glorkar a Kṛṣṇa chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa. Hare Kṛṣṇa.

The Bhāgavatam says that Kṛṣṇa is more pleased when ghee is not used in the sacrifice of fire and rather used to cook wonderful preparations offered to him and distributed to all of the people. So this is a solution to the problem. Let the hungry people of the world be fed Kṛṣṇa Ram Prasad, and they will be purified. They will also achieve actually spiritual peace in their heart. So this is the qualification they’re giving to Sutagoswami because he has engaged them in the sacrifice. For this age, he only wrote personally eight verses. He instructed everyone to study the works of Kṛṣṇa. Bhagavad Gītā, the authorized Vedas Truyo a.

Torrel mundo esturiar los obares de Kṛṣṇa. Bhagavad Gītā Śrīma Bhāgavatami los Vedas, his order.

Listen. Listen, Nityānanda.

Listen, Haridas.

You broadcast my order everywhere from house to house. You tell everyone this order. You beg from everyone this to follow disorder and Kara Kṛṣṇa Sikh study the.

Teachings of Kṛṣṇa Esturia los insignia.

So in this way, Lord Caitanya, he did not want to. He wanted to direct the people to the ancient teachings. But he ordered his disciples to write some literatures to describe in detail how to implement those transcendental literatures in the present age. So in Vrindavan, the six Go Swami headed by Rupert Sanātana in Vrindavan, Los.

Esco Samuel in Cabezados Po Rūpa Isanathana.

They wrote so many chastening literatures, gathering evidences from all of the Vedas. How to practice Kṛṣṇa Consciousness in this.

Agency, the Bhakti Rasamita Sindhu, a natural.

Devotion, tells us how to. How to. What are the stages of development in.

Devotional servicena como parti camos el servicio ocional Haribak tells us in detail how.

To practice the Vidhi Marg or Sanghana Bhakti, the rules and regulations path of devotional service, which wasn’t the Harib Bhakti bilas.

What is it? What does it teach? Saranabak rules, regulations, Sara nabakti las regulars.

The GBC has requested me to compile from the Haribaks the basic handbook of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. How to do all these ceremonies and as Proponents instructed us, just like Sila Acharya Dave, he’s been authorized to take.

The most important work.

He’s translating the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam 1112 and finishing the 10th Canto. And the order to fulfill the desire of Śrīla Prabhupāda.

Oh, they’re going to take your bags to the airport and check in. I only authorize 10. I don’t know how many are going. So they can have big cure time for you.

So once they completed writing those books.

In Vana, this was already 50 years.

After Lord Chani disappeared.

About 450 years. 400 years ago. Then they needed someone to take the books to eastern India, to Navadip, where.

They could be copied.

And then from there, where they could be distributed entrances. In those days, Nawadweep was the center of culture india.

In a chaos, Diaz Nawadweep, El Centro de Cultura in El Norte de la India.

And scholars would come from Kashmir, from Karnataka, from everywhere to discuss the Sanskrit culture and all the dweeb. So there are many Brahmanists who copy the literature.

Anton says, muchos escolades de Kashmir y todos partes de India. Parasturia los literature in Sanskrito. Anton de Villa Muchos brahmanas despondiles, paracopiar y treostieraturas.

Once, when Lord Caitanya was just only a boy of about 16.

A great scholar had come from Kashmir called Keshav.

Kashmiri called Keshav Kashmir un grand escolar Kesey maba Keisha of Kashmir.

His nickname was Dig Vijay.

Because everywhere.

He would go, he would defeat all.

The scholars with his great knowledge of Sanskrit.

In debate, the system india was.

That if two pundits would meet, they.

Would ask each other questions.

And if one could not answer the.

Question properly, or if he would find.

Effect in the other one, then that person would accept the victorious scholar as a spiritual master.

Those pandits or those scholars.

Even at the age of 14, Lord Chaitanya was the greatest scholar in.

He.

Had defeated all the bhaktas and everyone avoided him.

Naraya, puriya ganar so very well. And El Gandha, el mundo.

So when this Keshav Kashmiri came, the great scholars and talented, they had a meeting. What to do? Who should we send to defeat him? But of course, none of them were confident that they could defeat Keshu Karma. He was such a great scholar.

So they said, let us send.

You.

Because he’s only a boy, he’s only 14, yet he’s a great scholar. If he defeats Keshav Kashmiri, then it will make us more exalted. And if he’s defeated when he was only a boy. We will have another chance.

And John says.

So like this. They made a strategy. And they told Goanga or Chaitanya Mahrabut. Who is known as Nimay Pandit. And you go and meet this scholar Keshav Kashmir was a great devotee of Saraswati, the Goddess of learning.

He would always do worship and pūjā to Mother Sahasratiya.

She’s the servant of Kṛṣṇa who has the power for giving blessings in knowledge, in art, in music. In all types of cultural aspects. You will see her playing on a tempura. Sitting on a lotus flower. Was always worshiping the demigod Goddess Saraswati. And he became so learned and so expert by her blessings. Lord Chaitanya, presented yourself very humbly. That I am just inexperienced twice. That is some grammar of Sanskrit. What do I know about the finer matters of Alankara or poetic arrangements?

Senor Caitano, se presento muyo milamente que no unino in experto. Jose pogo de la Gramarika Sanskrita. Los aroglos poeticos. You know some muy diestro.

So Lord Chaitanya, he built up Keshav Kashmiri. And he requested that if you could. If I could hear such a great poet as yourself. Say something to glorify the Ganges. This would be very pleasing to me.

Keshava Kashmiri.

Just like the wind. He recited. He immediately composed and recited 100 verses. Beautiful Sanskrit language. With all type of poetic decoration. And unsubstantiated or backed by scriptural evidences. Then he asked, how did you like my visa? He said, they have very many good qualities. And they also have so many bad qualities. What are the good and bad qualities of your poetry? What bad quality there is in my poetry? He said what? He said. What are you saying? You tell me where is the bad quality of my poetry? If you give your permission, I can.

Point out the guladosh.

The good and the defective quality. If you give your permission. So Lord Chaitanya has committed to memory all the hundred verses. Just by hearing one time. And so he picked out from the middle one of the verses that alone. How he could memorize all these verses. I just yell them just like the wind. And then Caitanya. Of course this is a very detailed Sanskrit grammatical explanation. But I will just therefore give just the basic idea. He showed all the good qualities of the poetry.

Primero de la Poesilla he showed more.

Good qualities than even queso casmirino el.

Indicates the occasion of a cashmere.

And then he showed all of the contradictions in his construction of the poetry in tonsils. In this way, Keshav Kashmiri he was greatly humbled. He went off and he was praying to mother. How is it that I was defeated by this young man? Everything he said was correct. So never has my knowledge been covered before. How is it that this time my vision was covered and I was falsely proud? Even there was mistakes. Have I committed some offense too? You my mother? He couldn’t understand why this had happened. So that night he took rest.

And.

In his sleep his worshipable deity, Mother Saraswati appeared to him in a drink. And she told him that you fooled. You do not know that person who you are arguing with is my eternal master. He has come down on his own personal internal vision. You should surrender unto him. Then she disappeared. So then of course, memorized all those verses and piled all of those defects. K Mas de bo. Who else could have such an intelligence to understand all these intricacies of Sanskrit?

Kim the engineer.

And he will establish through his preaching the superior position of Vaishnavism.

El establishio a Trevor la position.

But he would establish a respect in all of his followers, to all of the demigods and to all of the people. His teaching was, you should offer your respect unto others and not desire respect for oneself. In this way one can always chant the holy name of Kṛṣṇa. So by hearing from the authority, sending it actually from the bona fide devotees, then we can understand the position of Kṛṣṇa, of Rāma and of the supreme personality Godhead. Even the great scholars who may know Soma Sanskrit, who may be otherwise so qualified, if they are not devotees, they have no way to know the secrets of Kṛṣṇa. But is not my devotee. He is not the dear most. To me, the dearest is my devotee. Even if he’s born in a low class family, in a family of dog eaters.

Because anything that he offers that should be accepted. Because he is as worshippable as I am. Because he has completely surrendered unto me. Even of thousands of liberated souls, it is rare to find one who knows Kṛṣṇa. Because only the pure devotee can know Kṛṣṇa. He told Arjuna, why am I giving you this secret? Because you are my friend and my devotee. So to understand the secret, you should become a devotee. You may live in the temple, you may live out of the temple. You may externally do so many things, but internally you should become devoted to Kṛṣṇa enchant his holy name to give you purification.

In the consciousness. In Kṛṣṇa consciousness, what does enjoying mean?

When Kṛṣṇa enjoys us, then we enjoy. Kṛṣṇa says in Bhagavad Gītā Namai Vangsa Jīva Loki that the jīva, or living entity, is a part of Kṛṣṇa. So when Kṛṣṇa is pleased, automatically his part is pleased. When the body feels happiness, that’s called pleasure. When the senses feel happiness, when our senses touch something that we like, we think when they’re touching something they don’t like, then we’re unhappy. You may take it, says Coca Cola, but if you have a toothache, then you may not like it. There’s Dharma, Arthur, Karma Mo. First thing is performing some religious principle, gaining some money, enjoying sense gratification. And then one in one is frustrated to achieve liberation. So when one achieves that type of liberation, liberated from material misery, that is also considered to be the greatest enjoyment above any material pleasure.

Pure devotion to Kṛṣṇa is considered the Pachampurush Archa, or the fifth goal of life, or the ultimate goal of life above these four. So by performing pure Brahma Bhatti, then one gives Kṛṣṇa pleasure and one automatically feels the greatest ecstasy. That is the enjoyment of the devotee. But actually in the pure saint, the any desire for enjoying that ecstasy is also eradicated. And one is simply situated in pure love. One of Kṛṣṇa’s devotees, Raktak, dies. He was standing Kṛṣṇa and he became Raktak, not dad. He was manning Kṛṣṇa and he became overwhelmed with ecstasy. Tears were coming from his eyes.
